Kolkata Knight Riders opt to bowl against Dhoni-led Chennai Super Kings

The toss didn’t go his way but still MS Dhoni got what he wanted on his return as Chennai Super Kings captain. His team was asked to bat first. CSK, who have yet to win a game since their first one of the season, will be playing on the same pitch that match took place. They made two changes, along expected lines. Rahul Tripathi came in for Ruturaj Gaikwad, who is out of the season due to an elbow injury and Anshul Kamboj came in for Mukesh Choudhary (6-0-71-1).Kolkata Knight Riders have a deep batting line-up and Ajinkya Rahane pointed to it as a major reason for why he wanted to chase. He also confirmed the return of Moeen Ali into the XI, a straightforward pick considering his offspin is a good match-up against a side filled with left-hand batters. Also, Moeen and Rahane too have experience playing on this ground having been part of a title-winning campaign with CSK in 2023.Chennai Super Kings: 1 Devon Conway, 2 Rachin Ravindra, 3 Rahul Tripathi, 4 Shivam Dube, 5 Vijay Shankar, 6 Ravindra Jadeja, 7 MS Dhoni (capt, wk), 8 R Ashwin, 9 Noor Ahmad, 10 Anshul Kamboj, 11 Khaleel AhmedImpact Player options: Matheesha Pathirana, Kamlesh Nagarkoti, Shaik Rasheed, Jamie Overton, Deepak HoodaKolkata Knight Riders: 1 Quinton de Kock (wk), 2 Sunil Narine, 3 Ajinkya Rahane (capt), 4 Venkatesh Iyer, 5 Rinku Singh, 6 Andre Russell, 7 Ramandeep Singh, 8 Moeen Ali, 9 Harshit Rana, 10 Vaibhav Arora, 11 Varun ChakravarthyImpact Player options: Angkrish Raghuvanshi, Manish Pandey, Anukul Roy, Rovman Powell, Luvnith Sisodia

Sheffield United advancing in negotiations to sign star loved by Pochettino

Sheffield United are pushing for some late arrivals and could now be set to step up talks to bring a talented midfielder to Bramall Lane, according to a report.

Sheffield United turn to Danny Ings to provide firepower

After a dismal start to the EFL Championship campaign, Ruben Selles has turned to experienced forward Danny Ings to ignite his flailing attack after he left West Ham United under freedom of contract at the end of last season.

The 33-year-old has signed a one-year deal at Bramall Lane after impressing during a trial spell, and former Middlesbrough defender Tommy Smith believes he could be an ideal addition to offer an element of variety in the final third.

West Ham's Danny Ings against Manchester City.

He stated on 72+: “It’s a decent move for Sheffield United. The one thing that they do need is a bit of experience in the group, I think Danny Ings will bring that.

“The key element for him is keeping himself fit which I believe he has done for the last couple of years, he’s just not had the game time that he probably craves and hopefully he gets that at Sheffield United.”

Manchester City defender Callum Doyle has been floated as a Blades target, albeit their lack of positive in recent times is unlikely to win any favour among a frustrated support.

Ultimately, recruitment can be the way out of a poor start by Selles in the dugout, though plenty of clubs will be fighting to sign players on the market between now and Monday’s deadline.

Nevertheless, Sheffield United fans can rejoice at some good news as they close in on a midfield signing that will add much-needed freshness in the engine room.

Sheffield United advancing in pursuit of Alex Matos

According to journalist Nizaar Kinsella, Sheffield United are advancing in negotiations to sign Chelsea midfielder Alex Matos before the deadline passes.

At this stage, it is unclear whether the 20-year-old will be allowed to leave Stamford Bridge on loan or whether his departure could be a permanent one after struggling to break through in West London.

Praised by Mauricio Pochettino for his “potential” while the Argentinian coach was in charge at Chelsea, Matos spent time out on loan at Oxford United last term and made 21 appearances across all competitions.

Versatile by nature, the former U’s man can feature in central midfield, wide on the right or as a number ten, while he has even enjoyed the occasional appearance as a centre-forward during his young career.

Sheffield United can look forward to his industrious presence in the engine room if they can close a deal for the Bedford-born man, who made 29 tackles on Championship duty last term, per Fotmob.

Time is of the essence for the Blades to recruit new faces and Matos could be an intelligent buy to offer a fresh perspective in the middle of the park.

Chelsea "determined" to re-sign former player as Juventus plan opening talks

Chelsea chiefs are already making recruitment plans ahead of 2026, and they have their eyes on a former player to bolster Enzo Maresca’s ranks after failing to fulfill some of their transfer goals in the summer.

While the Blues recorded England’s second-highest expenditure during the last window, second only behind Premier League champions Liverpool, Chelsea also wanted a new goalkeeper and centre-back.

Doubts have surrounded Robert Sanchez and his long-term capability as Chelsea’s number one shot-stopper, prompting the west Londoners to try their hand at a move for France goalkeeper Mike Maignan.

AC Milan and BlueCo couldn’t agree on a price for the 30-year-old, as Chelsea were only prepared to pay around £12 million and the Rossoneri wanted closer to £25 million (Ben Jacobs).

Reports suggest Chelsea are still planning to sign Maignan, this time on a pre-contract in 2026 as his contract ticks down towards expiry this season.

Meanwhile, Chelsea also failed with a move for centre-back Dean Huijsen in the summer, as per reliable media sources, with the Spain international starlet eventually joining Real Madrid in a £50 million deal.

Maresca’s side remained in the market for a keeper and defender until the latter weeks of the window (Simon Phillips), but it appears as if Chelsea couldn’t secure targets of the desired quality to reinforce their squad.

Rest assured, their aim to bring in defensive options for between the sticks and outfield hasn’t waned, with Chelsea believed to be among the many contenders to sign Crystal Palace stalwart Marc Guehi on a free transfer next year.

Guehi was on the verge of joining Liverpool in a deadline day move and was given permission to undergo a Merseyside medical. The Reds submitted a deal sheet so they could secure a deal past the 7pm cut-off point too, but Palace U-turned on a deal at the final moment, which forced the England international to remain at Selhurst Park (Sky Sports).

Now, a host of elite sides are lining up to sign Guehi as a free agent next summer, including Liverpool, Man City, Real Madrid and Barcelona.

Chelsea "determined" to re-sign Marc Guehi

According to TUTTOmercatoWEB, via Juve FC, Chelsea are also “determined” to re-sign Guehi after he departed Stamford Bridge for Palace in 2021.

However, they face stiff competition from Juventus, who want to open talks for the 25-year-old at the earliest possible opportunity.

The Old Lady could offer an intriguing opportunity to contend for the Serie A title as they look to reestablish their dominance of Italy after a disappointing last few years, but there is reason to believe Guehi would thrive alongside the likes of Levi Colwill (injured), Trevoh Chalobah and Wesley Fofana back at his former home.

Why Chelsea should go all out for Marc Guehi

The defender has established himself as a firm England international regular and an undroppable for Thomas Tuchel, with Guehi looking like a shoo-in for the 2026 World Cup squad after an impressive Euro 2024 replacing Harry Maguire.

Calm on the ball, strong in the air and quick across the ground, he offers the all-round skillset modern centre-backs need. Chelsea have been crying out for a consistent presence at the back after repeated defensive injuries over the last few years. Guehi’s blend of composure and leadership could instantly raise the level.

At zero cost, it’s practically a no-brainer, with the only concern being Chelsea’s serious competition for his signature.

Steve Parish branded Guehi a “superstar”, and Chelsea signing him for free would undoubtedly be a major coup.

Liverpool are always on the lookout for offensive talent and may have found a long-term replacement for Mohamed Salah at Anfield who they could now target.

Liverpool face anxious wait on Ibrahima Konate future

Undoubtedly, the only minor concern at Anfield right now comes in the form of Ibrahima Konate’s uncertain Liverpool contract situation, which has drawn interest from Real Madrid, who are thought to be in advanced talks over a potential move to the Bernabeu.

With his deal set to expire next summer, the La Liga giants could enact a repeat of Trent Alexander-Arnold’s acrimonious exit, which looked set to occur on a free transfer before Los Blancos shelled out £8.4 million to land the England international, ensuring he was on board in time for the Club World Cup.

Ibrahima Konate warming up for Liverpool

Addressing Konate’s situation, Redmen TV’s Ste Plunkett has admitted that he could envisage Konate leaving to join Real Madrid, admitting the pull of playing for the world heavyweights may prove difficult for the Liverpool man to turn down.

He told BBC Sport: “If we get a notification from Konate that his intention is to go to Real Madrid in the summer, then we are forced to do whatever it is we need to do to fill that gap, and then we have to find one more.

“I fully expect him to leave. He’s won trophies with the club; there is a big coming together of French talent at Real Madrid, you’ve got five or six of them, and that will continue. All the best French players will end up gravitating over there, and he wants to go and be a part of that.”

Nevertheless, Liverpool’s pursuit of a new central defender after their late attempts to sign Marc Guehi isn’t the only matter on the agenda for Arne Slot, who is now said to be lining up a long-term replacement for Mohamed Salah.

Liverpool eye Malick Fofana as Mohamed Salah successor

According to reports in Spain, Liverpool see Lyon star Malick Fofana as a long-term successor to Salah and remains on their radar despite opting to stay in France during the summer window.

Rivals Everton were actually in talks to sign Fofana over the summer, but the £43m-rated star stayed put at Lyon.

The Reds had shown interest in taking him to Anfield and his versatility is said to be a key reason why, alongside his speed and high level of end product in the final third.

Lauded by Man City star Rayan Cherki for his explosiveness, Fofana registered 11 goals and six assists in 41 appearances across all competitions last term, and he has continued that form in 2025/26, notching two goal contributions in three games.

With Salah at a point where consultation will begin in the next couple of years over his eventual replacement, Fofana appears to be of a similar mould and supporters will be keeping a keen eye on his situation as Liverpool continue to probe for his signature.

After Pino: Crystal Palace now in advanced talks to sign "intelligent" star

Despite already signing Yeremy Pino from Villarreal, Crystal Palace are now reportedly in advanced talks to sign another attacking reinforcement for Oliver Glasner.

Pino realises Premier League "dream"

Following the departure of Eberechi Eze to Arsenal, Crystal Palace swiftly swooped in to welcome Pino from Villarreal. Securing the talented winger in a deal worth around £21m, the Eagles will be desperately hoping that he has what it takes to fill Eze’s boots and become an instant hit among the fans at Selhurst Park.

After putting pen to paper, the 22-year-old quickly admitted that it’s a “dream” come true to be joining a Premier League side – telling the club’s official website: “Of course this motivates me. In the end, you have to continue the path the team has taken by coming here, winning titles, and my goal is to be in Europe.

“It’s very important for the club, for me as well. Doing well in Europe is a goal of mine, but also [to contribute] lots of goals, lots of assists, and for the team to be happy with me. A dream for me is to come to the Premier League at this historic club, being able to help the team with my game and my experience.”

Chairman Steve Parish also welcomed the new Crystal Palace star, saying: “It’s fantastic news that Yeremy – an exciting young talent, with already such an impressive record in domestic, European and international football – has chosen us as the next step in his career.”

After securing Pino’s signature, however, Palace are not done there. Reports are now suggesting that they’ve stepped up their pursuit to sign a talented Bundesliga star before Monday’s transfer deadline.

Crystal Palace in advanced talks to sign Baumgartner

According to Sacha Tavolieri, Crystal Palace are now in advanced talks to sign Christoph Baumgartner from RB Leipzig this week. The Austrian reportedly wants to complete the move and the Eagles are negotiating a loan deal with an option to buy the attacking midfielder at the end of the season.

At 26 years old, Baumgartner is a player who has featured at the very top of European football and would instantly offer Glasner some much-needed experience. After starting 18 out of 34 Bundesliga games last season, meanwhile, it’s a move that the midfielder himself arguably needs if he wants a permanent starting place.

That said, inconsistent game time hasn’t stood in the way of praise for the Leipzig man. Former Leipzig sporting director Max Eberl previously told reporters after signing the midfielder: “Christoph is quick, possesses a threat on goal and is a very intelligent player.

Benjamin Sesko sent warning about life at Man Utd by Slovenia boss after slow start following blockbuster transfer

Benjamin Sesko has been sent a warning about life at Manchester United by Slovenia national team head coach Matjaz Kek, as the striker is off to a slow start at his new club. Since completing a big-money transfer from RB Leipzig to Old Trafford in the summer transfer window, the Slovenia international has managed to score just one goal in his opening seven games.

  • Sesko's slow start to life at Manchester United

United brought in Sesko from Leipzig in the summer window to bolster their attack after a nightmare campaign in the 2024-25 season. Ruben Amorim spent heavily in the last window, bringing in three major attacking players, including the Slovenia international, who joined the club for a whopping £74 million ($100m). However, despite his big-money, Sesko has yet to live up to the expectations and scored his first goal for the club in his seventh appearance in the Red Devils' latest 3-1 loss to Brentford.

Slovenia boss issues warning to Sesko

Speaking to ahead of the October international break, Slovenia manager Matjaz Kek said: "This is the competitive level that is the most watched, but also the most difficult. The numbers are huge. When the numbers start to turn around with some transfers, when various analyses start, when the ratings increase, it is clear that you are increasingly exposed.

"This is comparable to the exposure of players in the NBA or the exposure of the top 10 tennis players. It is clear that behind a club that has marked the history of world football, but is currently not among the top ten, there is a large mass of fans with a critical view. The club is under scrutiny, the public analyses everything good and everything bad. There is much more of the latter at the moment. Only the best are capable of surviving this and proving themselves at this level."

  • "Sooner or later he will succeed"

Kek, however, claimed that he believes in the striker's ability and claimed that Sesko will eventually succeed at Old Trafford. The coach added: "My personal opinion is, and not only because I am Benjamin Šeško’s coach, that sooner or later he will succeed. If you want to be at this level, you have to be the best. Not only on the field, but you also have to be able to accept everything that happens around you. Along with all the negative criticism. He scored a goal in the last match, but what does that matter if the team loses. It is a process that is not easy."

Berta now planning to sell £265k-per-week Arsenal "big name" in January

Arsenal sporting director Andrea Berta, after a hectic summer transfer window, is maintaining his busy schedule behind-the-scenes long after the summer transfer window’s closure.

Mikel Arteta was backed with eight summer signings costing north of £250 million, including the addition of talismanic striker Viktor Gyokeres and England international playmaker Eberechi Eze.

The on-pitch result of these key deals will be crucial in determining whether the Gunners can end their long wait for a Premier League title, which has now spanned 21 years, and the pressure is on Arteta to deliver silverware with no place to hide.

Arsenal take on Nottingham Forest, now managed by former Spurs boss Ange Postecoglou, this Saturday and only a victory will do to recover from their damning 1-0 defeat against English champions Liverpool prior to the international break.

Arsenal manager MikelArtetacelebrates after Bukayo Saka scores their second goal

That being said, whilst Arteta has been backed to the hilt, the Spaniard does have injury problems to contend with.

William Saliba and Bukayo Saka will be out for the foreseeable future alongside Kai Havertz, who is expected to be out for many weeks after undergoing knee surgery.

The German’s injury prompted Berta to hijack Tottenham’s once-advanced deal for Eze, and Arteta couldn’t predict the number of months he’ll be out for when speaking about Havertz at a recent press conference.

Havertz isn’t the only versatile forward out of action right now, as Arsenal continue to wait for Gabriel Jesus’ return to the fold.

The Brazilian enjoyed a terrific purple patch of form midway through last season, but unfortunately ruptured his ACL during an FA Cup defeat to Man United in January — ending Jesus’ season as he still continues to recover.

Jesus might not be back for Arsenal until 2026, by which time the former Man City striker may not even be at the club anymore.

Arsenal could now sell Gabriel Jesus in January

As per Football Insider and journalist Pete O’Rourke, Arsenal are planning to potentially sell Jesus in the January transfer window, and could be one of two “big name” players to make way alongside Leandro Trossard.

Even once the £265,000-per-week star returns to full fitness, he is expected to be behind both Havertz and Gyokeres in the pecking order — meaning that the writing could be on the wall for Jesus’ departure next year.

Given their seismic summer investment, it is highly likely that Berta will be forced to sell if he wishes to add players mid-season — with Jesus and Trossard coming as the most likely sacrifices alongside Gabriel Martinelli.

According to other reports, Martinelli could also be sold by Arsenal in January, as the Gunners maintain an interest in Real Madrid star Rodrygo.

Rayudu: RCB may have to adjust batting tempo in Mullanpur

Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) fast bowler Josh Hazlewood is “feeling better” with every passing game but continues to work on his rehab, having just returned to full fitness from calf and side strains prior to the start of IPL 2025.Hazlewood, like the rest of the RCB squad, will have had less than 48 hours to recover between the end of their home game against Punjab Kings (PBKS) and the start of the reverse fixture in New Chandigarh.”I’ve just felt better as the tournament has gone on,” Hazlewood said after RCB’s loss to PBKS in Bengaluru. “I’ve done quite a bit of work in the nets. In the games, I just feel better. My run up to the crease, rhythm – it’s all been good. Hopefully that continues. I’m still doing a fair bit of work on the rehab side of things, but everything feels good.”Related

Hazlewood is joint-second in the Purple Cap list for most wickets in IPL 2025, his 12 wickets coming at an economy 8.14. On Friday night, Hazlewood’s season best of 3 for 14 kept RCB alive in their defence of 95 in a truncated 14-overs-a-side match, before they lost by five wickets. In his second stint with RCB after missing IPL 2024, Hazlewood has formed an effective new-ball partnership with Bhuvneshwar Kumar. The pair has helped RCB become the best bowling unit in the powerplay so far this season.”I think we’ve got highly skilled quicks in particular,” Hazlewood said. “To bowl with someone like Bhuvi, who has been around for so long, he’s so skilful at the start and end, it’s great to learn from him. Just the variety we’ve got, we [him, Bhuvneshwar and Yash Dayal] are all a bit different.”‘We’re getting there, but probably not quick enough’When asked about RCB’s losing all three matches at home so far, Hazlewood said the team had been a “bit slow on the learnings from the first two games”, where the batters went hard on a two-paced pitch and made 163 and 169 respectively against Gujarat Titans (GT) and Delhi Capitals (DC). On Friday night, RCB managed just 95 in their 14 overs, but were briefly in the game before Nehal Wadhera muscled PBKS home with 11 balls to spare.”It’s just we’ve probably been a bit slow on the learnings from the first two games and didn’t put that into practice as well as we could have,” Hazlewood said. “Probably in particular in those first six to eight overs with the score the way it was.Josh Hazlewood took 3 for 14 in a riveting three-over spell against PBKS•BCCI

“So, again, we’ll dive into this game probably more so when we get back to Bangalore and really go through in detail and with a fine-toothed comb and come up with a few ideas of where we can learn and improve. But I think the bowling definitely improved from the last two outings. So sort of we’re slowly getting there, but probably not quick enough.”Hazlewood wasn’t able to explain why the M Chinnaswamy Stadium hasn’t been a high-scoring venue this season, but said that bowling between the six- and eight-metre length was the way to go.”The bounce has always been there, but it’s in past years that it’s probably been more consistent,” Hazlewood said. “I find if you really hit the wicket hard on that six to eight metres, it’s quite tough to bat and we’ve found that. So maybe it might be a case of pulling back a touch and having a look, giving yourself a little bit of time.”I know in the first two games we lost here it was, you know, a batter on the other team going big and getting a partnership and scoring big late in the game. So if we can have our top five-six doing the batting for the 20 overs, I think that’ll go a long way to helping us win.”
