"Big trouble" – Glasner's Crystal Palace transfer claim on Guehi to Liverpool

Crystal Palace manager Oliver Glasner has warned the Eagles they will be in “big trouble” if they lose captain Marc Guehi before making any further signings.

Eze to leave Crystal Palace for Arsenal

Despite winning the FA Cup and Community Shield, it has been a frustrating summer for those at Selhurst Park. Not much money has been spent, they have been demoted to the Europa Conference League from the Europa League and are now set to lose star attacking midfielder Eberechi Eze.

Eze, who was not involved in the 1-0 Conference League first-leg play-off victory over Fredrikstad, is expected to complete a £60million move to Arsenal.

Talking about Eze’s absence on Thursday evening, Glasner said he revealed he received a phone call from Eze, who said he was not feeling well enough to play.

“I’m responsible for Crystal Palace and I think he won’t play for us again,” said Glasner when asked to confirm whether Eze was heading to the Emirates Stadium. “So I have to prepare the team for Nottingham (Forest, in the Premier League on Sunday) and for the second leg against Fredrikstad, and I’m planning without Eberechi.”

Meanwhile, Guehi, who did play against Fredrikstad, has been linked with a move to Liverpool before the deadline closes. However, talking after the first leg victory, Glasner said Palace would be in “big trouble” if they sold Guehi before replacing him.

Asked if he was referring to just the return trip to Fredrikstad or the whole season, Glasner continued.

'Everyone can think what they want!' – Jurgen Klopp admits he expected backlash for taking job at Red Bull Group as ex-Liverpool boss breaks silence on Mainz protest banners

Former Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp says he's not worried about criticism he has received for his decision to leave football management and take up his current role as global head of soccer at Red Bull. Fans in Germany have made their feelings clear about his new job, but the 58-year-old says he is happy with his new life and does not regret his decision..

Klopp swaps Liverpool for Red Bull

Klopp left Liverpool at the end of the 2023-24 season, bringing down a successful era with the Reds that brought great success and Premier League, FA Cup, League Cup, Champions League and Club World Cup trophies to Anfield. The German then started a new non-coaching role at the start of 2025, overseeing the worldwide network of Red Bull football teams, which includes RB Leipzig, Salzburg, and the New York Red Bulls. Klopp signed a long-term contract with Red Bull and reportedly earns around €12 million (£10m/$12.5m) per year in his new position. Red Bull chief executive offer Oliver Mintzlaff revealed it took approximately "20 seconds" for Klopp to say yes to the job after being approached while enjoying a sabbatical and some time away from football after leaving Liverpool.

AdvertisementGetty/X (@meenzer_on_tour)Mainz fans protested Klopp's Red Bull move

The former Liverpool boss has received plenty of criticism for his decision to move to Red Bull. Fans at Bundesliga side Mainz, where Klopp also enjoyed success as a manager, displayed banners protesting his move which read, "Have you forgotten everything we made you become?" Liverpool fans also expressed their disappointment, telling Klopp the move "absolutely stinks" and accusing him of "selling out". The reaction even led to Klopp interrupting a holiday to explain why he had moved to Red Bull in a video that he posted on social media.

Klopp hits back at his critics

Klopp has now been quizzed on the situation and told that he's not worried by those who do not like his move to Red Bull. He explained: "I knew it (would come). I’m German. I know what people in Germany think about the involvement of Red Bull in football. They love Red Bull. In all departments. But in football? No. So whatever, they want to do it that way.

“Funnily enough, it was only in Germany where the reaction was like that. But that’s fine – no problem. Everybody can think what they want. You just have to accept that I do what I want as long as I don’t hurt anybody. By the way, I don’t expect people to remember what I did for a specific club. The people in Mainz in the stadium now… they were little kids when I was there (1990-2001 as a player, then seven years as a coach), so their parents had to tell them who I was. So that’s how it is, it is absolutely fine."

But Liverpool fans happy with Klopp's decision

Klopp also pointed out that Liverpool fans will have been happier to see him join Red Bull than take on a coaching job at another club. He added: "I don’t expect everybody to like what I do. I have to do it for the right reasons – for my right reasons. By the way, in Liverpool, people are overly happy that I do what I do because I am not coaching another team.

"If I went to a foreign country, to Italy or Spain, people would have said, ‘Oh my God, that’s great.’ If I go to Bayern (Munich) or whatever, then especially Dortmund fans would have said, ‘I don’t like it!’ I finished at Liverpool at 57. I was 100 per cent certain and sure that I will not finish working. I had a break for seven months or so. I enjoyed it – wow!"

Worth more than Chermiti: Rangers star will be a "better signing" at Ibrox

The international break will have come at a welcome time for Rangers and under-fire boss, Russell Martin, with the former Scotland defender having endured a miserable start to life at Ibrox.

Four points from four in the Premiership, alongside a Champions League qualifying embarrassment, has already plunged the ex-Southampton boss into crisis. Can he turn it around?

There’s no hiding from what was a miserable August, although nothing has been decided yet. The season is only in its infancy.

With 14 new signings needing to properly bed in to life in Glasgow, it may still be too soon to properly judge Martin’s tenure, albeit with the pressure on considering the nature of their summer outlay.

Roughly £30m was reportedly spent by the Gers during the most recent window, with the most notable investment having been the £8m that was splashed out on goal-shy Everton youngster, Youssef Chermiti.

That eye-watering fee – which could rise to £10m with add-ons – will bring with it a lefty weight of expectation. Is the Portuguese striker worth the risk?

Youssef Chermiti's record pre-Rangers

Three goals in 22 games for Sporting Lisbon. No goals in 24 senior outings for the Toffees. A record that points to Rangers – and former Everton chief Kevin Thelwell – gambling on potential rather than proven quality.

It is a “heck of a gamble” at that, in the words of club legend Ally McCoist, with there little evidence to suggest that Chermiti will prove to be a success in Scottish football, amid his recent woes on Merseyside.

Signed on a £15m deal by the Premier League side back in the summer of 2023, the 21-year-old has been reduced to bit-part status since then, albeit with then-boss Sean Dyche admitting in 2024 that he was recruited as a “development player” who would have fared better with a loan move.

Rather than a temporary exit, Chermiti has now secured a permanent switch to Scotland, thus marking the club’s most expensive outlay since the £12m capture of Tore Andre Flo back in 2000.

The merits of such a deal can be debated long into the night, with the Portugal youth international – who has scored seven times in 75 recorded games at academy and senior level, as per Transfermarkt – in need of a positive start to try and win over an expectant fanbase.

That said, the Light Blues’ extensive recruitment can help ease the burden on the marquee new addition, with Bojan Miovski likely to be the main man in attack for Martin and co instead.

Bojan Miovski's market value

If Chermiti is the long-term expensive gamble, then Miovski appears to be the perfect alternative, providing an experienced, ‘proven’ option who has already delivered the goods in the Premiership.

Market Movers

Described as a player who “does everything” during his time at Aberdeen by Billy Dodds, due to his impressive scoring rate and link-up play, the Macedonian marksman could prove a real coup following his £2.6m switch.

Indeed, while Chermiti is yet to flourish at first-team level, the 26-year-old has more than proven his worth in recent years, having notably scored 44 times in 98 games during his time at Pittodrie.

That impressive haul included a fine record on the big occasion, with Miovski scoring four times from just nine meetings with Rangers in all competitions, alongside netting three times in eight games against Celtic.

While a return of four goals in 23 games for Girona last term is hardly the most eye-catching, the clinical number nine has already been there and done it for the Dons, a fact that pundit Andy Walker believes will make him a “better signing” than his new teammate:

That fact is also reinforced when considering what Miovski’s actual market value is, with the Gers having seemingly secured a bargain when considering their £2.6m investment.

As per the great minds at CIES Football Observatory, the 33-cap international has a peak value of as much as €16m (£14m), eclipsing the figure that was dished out on Chermiti.

While Rangers won’t be looking to cash in on their new addition any time soon, that valuation does point to them striking a significant profit in the years to come.

Better than Chermiti: Rangers must regret selling "rapid" star for just £4m

After signing Youssef Chermiti for an enormous fee of £8m, would Rangers have been better off keeping a “rapid” attacker sold for £4m?

Virgil Van Dijk named "annoying" ex-Arsenal star his toughest opponent – not Messi

Virgil van Dijk is one of the best defenders of his generation. The Dutchman has won it all in English football and he has often done so without even breaking a sweat. But that doesn’t mean that he’s breezed through his time at Liverpool without squaring off against some incredibly difficult opponents.

The Premier League took a breath of anticipation when Erling Haaland and Van Dijk found themselves one-on-one at Anfield not so long ago in a battle that ended with the Norwegian’s wayward shot. Meanwhile, Cristiano Ronaldo has never even scored against the towering Liverpool captain and many others have ended afternoons to forget in his ruthless grasp.

Endless players have endured their toughest games against Van Dijk and that includes Manchester United’s Marcus Rashford, who is now on loan at Barcelona. The England international name-dropped his former Premier League rival when asked about the most difficult defender he’s faced.

Whilst so many have struggled to leave their mark against Van Dijk, however, the same can’t be said for Lionel Messi. When an immovable object met an unstoppable force, Van Dijk may have come away with a shock victory courtesy of Liverpool’s dramatic Champions League comeback, but Messi still had his moment at the Nou Camp – scoring twice.

The fact that one of this generation’s greatest defenders could not keep Messi quiet sums up just how other-wordly the Argentine icon is, more than it sums up Van Dijk’s own shortcomings on a difficult evening. But the Dutchman, to his credit, was not fooled twice by Messi’s magic and sent him crashing out of the Champions League in historic fashion in the second leg.

That Nou Camp thrashing courtesy of Messi will be one that Van Dijk remembers even to this day, but it wasn’t enough to make the Barcelona legend his toughest opponent. Instead, the central defender dropped an unexpected name.

Van Dijk names "annoying" Giroud as toughest opponent

Speaking to Gary Neville on The Overlap, Van Dijk named Olivier Giroud as his toughest opponent despite having squared off against the likes of Messi, Ronaldo and Haaland.

Olivier Giroud

The Liverpool captain looked back on the Frenchman’s knack for a goal against the Reds before labeling him an “annoying” striker to play against.

Although Messi seems the obvious choice, the fact that Giroud has scored three goals in five games against Van Dijk throughout his career makes him a worthy candidate for his toughest opponent.

Huge club think "fantastic" £70k-a-week Liverpool ace wants to join them

A worrying update has dropped regarding the future of a “fantastic” Liverpool player, with a huge club confident that they will sign him next year.

Liverpool linked with potential Salah successors

Mohamed Salah continues to be one of the best players in the Premier League, despite the fact that his form has been well short of its best so far this season.

At 33 years of age, however, Liverpool do need to be aware that the Egyptian legend isn’t getting any younger, and that an elite replacement will eventually need to be found, in order to make the transition as seamless as possible when it happens.

Lyon winger Malick Fofana has been linked with a move to Anfield, being touted as a Salah successor, with the Belgian a hugely talented young player who can excel on either flank. Meanwhile, Bayern Munich star Michael Olise is also reportedly considered a leading option to come in and be Liverpool’s next star winger, with the Frenchman already scoring three goals in two Bundesliga appearances this season.

Away from the Salah situation, there is a Reds player whose future needs to be resolved as soon as possible, with a new update dropping.

Club think they will sign Liverpool regular

Speaking in a Q&A for The Athletic, journalist Mario Cortegana claimed that Real Madrid feel Liverpool centre-back Ibrahima Konate wants to move to the Bernabeu.

This comes just days after it was reported that Konate is in “very advanced” talks over a move to Madrid, with the rumours refusing to go away.

He doesn’t appear to be any closer to extending his stay, with the European giants considering him a key target alongside Arsenal’s William Saliba.

At this point, it does certainly feel more than possible that Konate could join Madrid next year, with his current Liverpool deal expiring in 2026 and no sign of an extension being agreed currently.

The £70,000-a-week Frenchman is an important player who the Reds should be looking to tie down, though, with Virgil van Dijk one admirer, heaping praise on him early last season.

“I think we need everyone to be at their best. He is a fantastic player who still can be better. As you saw, he is important with the goal, he is defensively solid, a bit unlucky with the goal we conceded, but obviously the qualities he has are outstanding in my opinion.”

Konate has received criticism for some poor form this season, but that shouldn’t cloud the fact that he is Liverpool’s second-most important defender and he has been a regular under Slot.

Liverpool identify Mohamed Salah successor who is loved by Man City star

The Reds are ready to recruit an exciting attacker who could be a long-term solution under Arne Slot.

BySean Markus Clifford Sep 10, 2025

While losing him to Madrid wouldn’t necessarily feel like the end of the world, some supporters may only fully appreciate the job he does when he leaves, and how hard it may be to replace him.

Shreyas Iyer and Shashank Singh power Punjab Kings to 243 against Gujarat Titans

Shreyas Iyer began his stint as Punjab Kings captain by smashing his highest IPL score

ESPNcricinfo staff25-Mar-20254:20

What’s in store for PBKS under Ponting and Iyer?

Shreyas Iyer had a century for the taking. He was 97 off 42 when the final over against Gujarat Titans began but he did not face a single ball of it, having told his partner Shashank Singh don’t worry about my hundred. He had spoken prior to the start of the season that he wanted to bat at No. 3 and he showed against GT the extent of damage he can do. He smashed nine sixes, his second most in an IPL innings.Punjab Kings had other contributors as well. Their debutant opener Priyansh Arya looked in sync with the quality of cricket at the IPL, scoring 43 off 27 balls. He was responsible for eight of the 12 boundaries his team scored in the powerplay. Spin helped stall Punjab’s progress, Rashid Khan picking up a wicket in his first over. R Sai Kishore was on a hat-trick during the course of his spell. He finished with 3 for 30 with a little help from Glenn Maxwell who began his third stint with Punjab with a first-ball duck. It needn’t have been that way. Had he reviewed the lbw decision, he would’ve survived. Sai Kishore’s delivery was projected to bounce over the stumps.Ahmedabad is a chase-friendly ground. Five of the last six IPL games have been won by the team batting second and that was a big reason for Shubman Gill choosing to bowl first. Iyer, though, might have nullified that advantage with an innings so full of intent. He really didn’t bother trying to keep the ball on the ground. He hit the fourth ball he faced for six. He hit two off Sai Kishore in the over after he picked up two wickets in two balls. He hit Rashid for two sixes as well. He was so switched on, he could spot wides from the non-strikers’ end (happened in the 15th over from Mohammed Siraj), and he dispatched that extra ball for six too.Titans will have to pull off the IPL’s second biggest chase if they are to win this game.

Thomas Frank hints Tottenham could launch transfer swoop for 'exceptional' Bodo/Glimt star after Champions League draw

Tottenham were rattled by Bodo/Glimt in the Champions League clash courtesy of two goals from Jens Petter Hauge, a player Thomas Frank once tried to sign at Brentford. And the Spurs boss has refused to rule out the possibility of reigniting his interest in the 25-year-old midfielder when the transfer market reopens next year.

Frosty night for Spurs in Arctic Circle

Tottenham suffered a huge scare but snatched a late 2-2 draw against Bodo/Glimt in their Champions League encounter. The match, played on the artificial turf of Aspmyra Stadium inside the Arctic Circle, saw Spurs come back from a two-goal deficit. The hosts dominated the first half and should have taken the lead sooner. Kasper Hogh missed a golden opportunity in the 35th minute, firing a penalty kick over the bar after Rodrigo Bentancur was penalised for a rash challenge. Bodo finally broke the deadlock in the 53rd minute through a curled effort by Hauge, who then doubled his tally in the 66th minute, capitalising on a defensive error to beat Guglielmo Vicario with a powerful shot. Tottenham quickly responded, with Micky van de Ven heading home from a Pedro Porro cross just two minutes later. Spurs pressed for an equaliser, and their efforts were rewarded in the 89th minute when Archie Gray's shot was saved and deflected off Bodo substitute Jostein Gundersen into the net.

AdvertisementGetty Images SportHow Hauge almost became a Bee

Following the match in Norway, Frank was asked about his previous connection with Hauge, and the Spurs boss said: "He was fantastic. I actually tried to sign him for Brentford a long time ago, it was good to see him again. I knew he was good and today he was exceptional. You never know what the future holds."

Hauge, meanwhile, revealed he held a video call with Frank some years ago. He said: "I had a Zoom meeting with him. We were close a few years ago. We had a good talk out on the field. He’s a fantastic coach, who has done incredibly well. It was close once, but it never quite worked out."

From small club, to big dreams for Hauge

Hauge began his career at his hometown club Bodo/Glimt, and made his professional debut at just 16. He enjoyed a highly impressive 2020 season, where he scored 14 goals and provided 10 assists in 18 league games, which propelled him into the spotlight. But his standout performance against AC Milan in a Europa League qualifier led to a five-year contract with the Italian giants back in October 2020. While at Milan, Hauge had promising moments, including goals in the Europa League and Serie A. However, after just one season, he moved to Eintracht Frankfurt on loan, a deal which was made permanent in 2022. He was part of the Frankfurt squad that won the Europa League in 2022, though he struggled for consistent playing time. Following a loan spell to Gent in Belgium, and finding it difficult to replicate his explosive early form, Hauge returned to Bodo/Glimt earlier this year.

Getty Images SportChance of Hauge heading to Spurs?

Tottenham have invested in attacking midfield talent this summer, most notably Xavi Simons who joined from RB Leipzig for £51 million ($69m) just before the transfer window closed, which means a move for Hauge in the new year is unlikely. With James Maddison and Dejan Kulusevski scheduled to return in the coming weeks and months, there would very little space for Hauge, plus there's the contract he's signed with his hometown club, which runs until December 2028 and would be a major stumbling block.
