'That guy deserves to be in our history!' – Ruben Amorim thankful for Man Utd captain Bruno Fernandes after leading Red Devils to pressure-relieving win over Chelsea

Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim has paid tribute to Bruno Fernandes, saying the midfielder "deserves to be in the history of the club" as he continues to act as his side's talisman in their hour of need. The 31-year-old led the Red Devils' charge towards a precious Premier League victory over Chelsea on Saturday, scoring the opening goal in a dramatic 2-1 win which saw both sides reduced to ten men.

  • Fernandes has occasionally faced criticism for his attitude

Fernandes chalked up a milestone against Chelsea, with his first-half strike taking his United goal tally up to 100 in all competitions in a near-six-year spell at Old Trafford which has saw him face occasional criticism for his fiery temperament.

Amorim adamant Fernandes deserves praise after Chelsea win

While Amorim believes Fernandes "can play better" at times, the United head coach is adamant the captain equally deserves "all the praise" as he continues to produce when the club need him most.

  • Amorim lauds club captain Fernandes in his post-match comments

In his post-match press conference following the win over Chelsea, Amorim said of Fernandes: "He deserves all the praise. The most important thing is the influence he has on the squad. Sometimes he's not in the best position to be the main man in every game, but the point of the captain is to be the best he can be in every situation to help the team to be better. He's doing that. I think he can play better – but everyone can play better in our team. That guy deserves to be in the history of our club, not just for what he does but for what his team conquers."

  • Fernandes helps ease Old Trafford tension following difficult start

Fernandes’ efforts against Chelsea helped ease the tension surrounding United following a difficult start to the 2025-26 season. Amorim’s side headed into the match having won just one of their opening five games in all competitions, but victory over Chelsea saw them push up to 10th in the Premier League table.

Advantage Australia as batting gets harder at the MCG?

A see-sawing Boxing Day Test at the MCG is heading into territory rarely seen these days. A fifth-day finish and all results possible, with varying degrees of probability.Australia have earned a handsome lead – 333 with one wicket standing – after recovering from a wobble early in their second innings. India had looked in a promising position on Sunday – they had the hosts 91 for 6 – but they struggled to get through the tail and will have to break the record for the highest successful chase at the MCG to win the Test.Marnus Labuschagne, who top-scored for Australia with 70 off 139 balls, believed his team had always been ahead in the game. They took a first-innings lead of 105 and were able to build on it with crowd favourites Scott Boland and Nathan Lyon putting up a 55-run partnership for the last wicket.Related

“I felt like we were probably ahead of the game just the whole way,” Labuschagne said. “I was sitting up at the top with our batting coach Michael Di Venuto and I was just watching every ball. We’re scrapping for runs, there was overthrows, leg byes, running twos, that last bit had everything. I mean we even had the game finished with a no-ball wicket into a last ball four, so I mean people that say Test cricket isn’t exciting, I mean I’m a player and I was watching and I was excited.”The natural wear and tear of the pitch as a Test match goes into the fifth day has brought a new challenge for the batters for the first time in this series.”As the game’s gone on the bounce has got less and more inconsistent,” Labuschagne said, wearing a bandage on his right arm from where an Akash Deep ball kicked up and hit him. “So we’re getting more balls hitting the stumps, more balls skidding through and we’re getting that coming through on the data. And that’s probably the major difference. The seam movement’s probably been the same [throughout the game] but just the amount of bounce is significantly lower so that makes for pretty tricky batting there. More balls are hitting the stumps from a shorter length, balls are skidding through, few balls shot up today.”India understand the challenge but prefer keeping that in the back of their mind as they look to correct the mistakes they made in the first innings, when they lost many wickets in a heap and needed to be rescued from 191 for 6 by a maiden Test century from Nitish Kumar Reddy.”About the pitch, I feel like you need to get one or two good partnerships, I feel like from the first day the movement was there off the pitch,” Reddy said. “The pitch is doing something and we can see later on the fourth day it was doing a little bit more, but we don’t need to put more pressure like the pitch is doing this or that, we need to go instantly according to the situation.”Does it help that India have a century-maker in their ranks as they prepare for a big chase? “Obviously when I come to the second-innings batting, it’s a fresh innings, I can’t start my innings from 100,” Reddy said. “So it’s a fresh innings, I have to start from starting, how I approached in the first innings, I have to be the same thing, and let’s see what the team plan, and according to that we’ll plan, and I think I have to leave the 100 behind and start the fresh innings.”We’ll come back strong in batting order, what we have done in the first innings, we’ll rectify the mistakes … we have to first take the last wicket and then we’ll plan accordingly.”

What Newcastle are planning after £50m Strand Larsen bid rejected

Newcastle United have picked out a crucial double signing for manager Eddie Howe as their £50m bid for Wolves striker Jorgen Strand Larsen was rejected on Monday.

Strikers still high on Newcastle's agenda

The Magpies’ summer has been dominated by striker news, not least their efforts to keep hold of Alexander Isak, with the Swede still trying to seal a move to Premier League champions Liverpool.

Newcastle missed out on signing Benjamin Sesko from RB Leipzig earlier in the summer, with Manchester United snapping him up instead, but a host of alternatives have been mentioned, including Juventus marksman Dusan Vlahovic in recent days.

Premier League pair Yoane Wissa and Nicolas Jackson are also considered genuine targets, with the former doing the same as Isak and refusing to play for his current club, but the primary target to emerge in recent days is Norway star Strand Larsen, who made his loan move to Wolves permanent this summer.

Regardless of what happens with Isak, Callum Wilson’s time at St James’ Park has come to an end and the Magpies must find a solution, but a £50m offer for the Norwegian was rejected on Monday.

Newcastle still targeting two striker signings

According to Football Insider, Newcastle and Howe want and expect to sign not one but two strikers this summer, with journalist Pete O’Rourke further explaining the situation amid the move for Strand Larsen, perhaps implying he will be joined by one of Wissa or Jackson.

This is going to be such a pivotal week for Newcastle, with so much potentially happening on the striker front, and it is a short period that could end up defining their season.

If Isak does leave, which doesn’t feel too likely currently, it is essential that two players are brought in, in order to make up for the gaping void that the 25-year-old would leave.

Should he stay put, however, the need for a couple of strikers would be lessened, assuming Isak can reintegrate with his teammates after being made to train alone by Howe.

Put bluntly, Newcastle’s summer has been something of a mess, including how they have handled the Isak saga, but it is imperative that they nail the next week or so.

To lose Isak and not bring in sufficient replacements could be fatal, in terms of the Magpies kicking on in both the Premier League and Champions League, and the ideal outcome would be to see Isak remain at St James’ Park, with a top-quality option such as Wissa joining him as competition.

Konstas, Green and Andrews put Thunder in BBL playoffs

Chasing 159, Scorchers were bowled out for 97 on a tricky Showground surface

Sam Konstas smashed a half-century on a tricky Showground surface before Sydney Thunder capitalised on reckless batting from Perth Scorchers to secure their place in the BBL finals. After being sent in, Konstas produced a fast start for Thunder before they were reeled in by Scorchers’ spinners until Tom Andrews blasted an unbeaten 37 off 13 balls at the death.Chasing 159, Scorchers had a horror show with the bat marked by the disastrous run-outs of Cooper Connolly and Sam Fanning as they were bowled out for 97 in the 18th over.BBL powerhouse Scorchers require a miracle to reach the finals after slumping to a fourth straight defeat.Sam Konstas was off the blocks in a hurry•Getty Images

Konstas fires, Andrews provides late liftOn a surface known for being sluggish and favouring spin, Konstas and fellow opener David Warner decided to go for broke against the new ball. They smashed 36 runs in the first three overs with Warner setting the tone with an early blow over the infield before being overtaken by Konstas.Konstas mixed elegant strokes with trademark inventiveness to race to 28 off 12 balls, but Warner’s dismissal in the last over of the powerplay triggered a collapse.Konstas could not find the strike as Thunder’s batters struggled mightily on a surface that started to become difficult to bat on. They didn’t score a boundary for almost 10 overs until Konstas cleverly reverse-swept Connolly’s left-arm spin for a boundary. He brought up his half-century off 40 balls with a dismissive boundary off speedster Lance Morris before holing out shortly afterwards. At 114 for 7 after 17 overs, Thunder appeared likely to fall well short of a decent total until Andrews unfurled several mighty strokes at the death. He finished the innings with a six down the ground in a final over that cost 25 runs – the most expensive of veteran Jason Behrendorff’s T20 career.Cooper Connolly bowled tidily on a surface with plenty of help for the spinners•Getty Images

Beardman debuts, spin takes overScorchers’ finals hopes received a blow after Jhye Richardson’s latest injury setback ended his BBL season. But it meant an opportunity for 19-year-old quick Mahli Beardman, who has been mentored by Dennis Lillee. A year ago he starred at the Under 19 World Cup and recently played in the Prime Minister’s XI two-day match against India in Canberra. He had a tough BBL initiation, entering the attack in the third over against Konstas and Warner. Beardman hopes to one day emulate Morris and bowl 150 kph, but he can already produce significant pace around 140 kph.Beardman was under siege against a rampaging Konstas, his Australia Under-19 teammate, who used his feet superbly to whack a slower delivery down the ground for six.But with the wicket slowing up notably after the powerplay, skipper Ashton Turner turned to his spinners and Connolly, Ashton Agar and Matthew Spoors delivered with three wickets between them.Connolly, whose bowling is slowly progressing, was extremely accurate and clean-bowled Sam Billings to finish with 1 for 16 off 4 overs. It was a tonic after Connolly was not not named in Australia’s Champions Trophy squad.Having taken 2 for 6 off 4 overs at this ground last season, Agar was again miserly with 1-14 off 4 overs while Spoors claimed his first BBL wicket after dismissing George Garton.Morris recovered from a tardy start to claim three wickets with fiery bowling touching near 150 kph. But Turner was left to rue not bowling out Spoors, who still had two overs left, with Morris and Behrendorff smashed at the death.Aaron Hardie was bowled by Tanveer Sangha•Getty Images

Sangha returns in favourable conditionsPlaying just his third BBL game of the season, legspinner Tanveer Sangha had the ideal surface to make his return. He started nervously after a loose delivery was swept by Aaron Hardie to the boundary. But Sangha had his revenge with a flatter, straighter delivery that clean-bowled Hardie. He bowled tidily through the middle overs to suffocate Scorchers in tandem with offspinner Chris Green to finish with 1 for 18 off 4 overs.Green claimed a couple of late wickets to finish with 3-13 off 4 overs, while Andrews capped a fine all-round match with the wicket of Nick Hobson.Hardie’s struggles continueAllrounder Hardie started the day with good news after he was selected for Australia’s Champions Trophy squad despite a modest BBL season playing as a specialist batter. He came to the crease in the second over following the wicket of Finn Allen. Disaster struck when Fanning was run out at the non-striker’s end after Hardie had initially called for a single before changing his mind. The run-out seemed to rattle Hardie, who was edgy at the crease before smashing consecutive sixes on the leg side off quick Nathan McAndrew. But he was soon bowled for 22 – which was Scorchers’ top score – to trigger a collapse.Scorchers’ disastrous performance was summed up by Connolly, their leading batter this season, being run out attempting a second run after a direct throw from Hugh Weibgen at midwicket.Turner, who has rescued his team many times before, holed out tamely as Scorchers appear almost certain to miss finals for just the third time in BBL history.

Buttler: We're blessed with bowlers that are capable batters

England captain also talks up 21-year-old Bethell who is on his first international tour of Asia

Sreshth Shah21-Jan-2025A belligerent batting line-up is a dream for most international sides. Throw in a coach who firmly believes in that style and a squad where nearly everyone has at least one first-class hundred and the ability to hit monster sixes, and England possess a unit that could blow away the best bowling units on most days.Having batting depth through the team sheet served them magnificently in their ODI World Cup triumph of 2019 and their T20 World Cup victory in 2022. And in their lead up to the T20Is against India and next year’s T20 World Cup in India and Sri Lanka, England appear to be shaping up the same way.Bowlers who bat not only shorten the tail but positively affect the top order too. England captain Jos Buttler acknowledged that the batters, consequently, can play with much more freedom.Related

Powerhouse line-ups clash in a series that could test T20's limits

“That gives a lot of depth to the XI and confidence to the guys at the at the top that there’s plenty [of batting] to come,” Buttler said on the eve of the series opener in Kolkata. “So we can be really aggressive and, you know, not worry too much about our wicket, because we’ve got guys behind us who can do exactly the same job.”We’re really blessed actually in terms of the bowlers that we have here, on this tour. They’re all very, very capable bats. I think if you look at guys like Gus Atkinson with a Test hundred, and then Brydon Carse is an excellent hitter of the ball, and then Adil Rashid down at No. 11 [No. 10 on the team sheet for the first T20I] who’s got multiple first-class hundreds. So, yeah, I think we’re very fortunate in that sense that a lot of our bowlers are very, very capable batters.”England announced their XI for the Kolkata T20I more than 24 hours before the game, and on a batting-friendly Eden Gardens track, a score of 200 appears to be the minimum. In Phil Salt, Ben Duckett, Buttler himself, Harry Brook and Liam Livingstone, England have a plethora of batters who could aim for the roof. The addition of the exciting Jacob Bethell – who averages 57.66 and scores at 167.96 in six T20I innings – has only made them look more lethal. But can he conquer Indian conditions, especially the spinners? Like the other batters, Bethell spent large periods trying to face spin in the nets in the two practice sessions leading up to the first game.”It’s a new challenge for him to come and play in India,” Butter said. “But I know he’s excited [for it].”I think he’s been someone who in English cricket has been talked about for a while knowing the talent he possesses, even when he’s been playing in the Under-19s. So, he was a name you’d hear being talked about that he’s gonna be a special player. And I think, you know, all credit to him. I think he’s done brilliantly well coming into international cricket.”And he has got a good head on his shoulders, and obviously, he’s got the game for it, as you’ve seen in in the white-ball stuff. And then obviously, moving into Test cricket, you know, it’s fantastic to watch him in New Zealand. So, yeah, he’s been playing really well.”Jacob Bethell is coming on the back of decent scores in the BBL•Getty ImagesFor Buttler, though, having the chance to work with Brendon McCullum for the first time (Buttler has not been in the Test side since McCullum took over as the Test coach) is especially exciting. But even more so that the leadership can work with their best players. Nobody’s workload is being managed, fast bowlers like Jofra Archer and Mark Wood are injury-free, and that’s as perfect a situation as England can imagine as they face a coaching transition that wants to build into the Champions Trophy and next year’s T20 World Cup.”It’s a really exciting tour, coming to India with what I’d say is a full line-up for us,” Buttler added. “You know sometimes there’s so much cricket that certain players have to be rested or managed. But that’s certainly not the case for us at all in this series. So we’ve got a full complement of players, which is really exciting. Obviously, Baz is coming into the white-ball set-up for the first time too.”[I] also want to build that captain-coach alliance. Obviously, it’s not a new set-up because Baz has been around for a while and there are a lot of players in this squad that have been with him in the Test set-up for a number of years already.”So, yeah, just looking forward to building that relationship in the white-ball set-up. It’s going to be a great series against a really top side in their own conditions. So, loads to look forward to.”

Xabi Alonso 'pleasantly surprised' by 'very complete' Alvaro Carreras' bright start following €50m transfer from Benfica

Real Madrid head coach Xabi Alonso was effusive in his praise for left-back Alvaro Carreras, who was one of the four players to join Los Blancos over the summer. Arriving from Benfica, Carreras' impressive start to life at the Santiago Bernabeu has left his manager "pleasantly surprised", with the former Bayer Leverkusen head coach labelling the 22-year-old a "very complete" player.

Carreras makes brilliant start to Real Madrid career

Carreras has been a breath of fresh air in Madrid's new-look backline. Signed from Benfica for a fee of €50 million (£43m/$58m), the former Madrid academy star has started in all six games this season without being substituted. The 22-year-old has been solid defensively while offering numerical superiority in attack with his overlapping runs.

AdvertisementGetty Images SportCarreras hailed as 'very complete' by Alonso

Speaking to reporters on Monday, Alonso said: "I was optimistic [about his signing]. His personality and competitive nature have pleasantly surprised me. He makes very few mistakes, he is very focused, he has great mental quality, great tactical and technical quality too, he is very complete. The instant impact he has had is surprising, it is fantastic news. We also have Fran [Garcia] and Ferland [Mendy] for that position, but his performance is excellent."

Madrid's undisputed first-choice left-back

Carreras' displays at the start of the season make him undroppable from the starting lineup, despite the improvement Fran Garcia showed as the starting left-back at the Club World Cup. And then there's Mendy, who spent the majority of the 2024-25 on the sidelines due to injury problems. The French defender seems to have fallen down the pecking order and was linked with a departure over the summer.

Superior to Wissa & Watkins: The "next Gyokeres" is Newcastle's new target

After winning the Carabao Cup last season, ending Newcastle’s 56-year wait to win a major trophy, it looked as though the PIF project was coming to a head.

Qualification for the Champions League was then secured on the final day of the campaign and the Toon were ready to attack this transfer window with intent.

To their credit, Eddie Howe’s men haven’t been shy in the transfer window but they’ve simply been met with fierce resistance and a series of rejections.

Supporters came into this window with plenty of excitement but it’s been nothing shy of a nightmare. Their best player since Alan Shearer, Mr Isak, wants to depart and hasn’t been shy of letting his desires be known, releasing quite the angry statement on Tuesday evening ahead of the PFA awards.

Newcastle have, at least, welcomed Anthony Elanga and Aaron Ramsdale to St James’ Park, but a striker continues to elude them.

The latest on Newcastle's striker hunt

Crikey, what a summer, eh? Newcastle have missed out on a whole plethora of forwards in recent months, notably Hugo Ekitike and Benjamin Sesko who turned down the Magpies’ advances, instead signing for Liverpool and Manchester United respectively.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

Work is currently being undertaken to bring Yoane Wissa to the north east but despite the player’s apparent desperation to make the move, Brentford are stubborn. After losing Bryan Mbeumo, Thomas Frank and skipper, Christian Norgaard already this summer, they are not keen on seeing their prized striker leave for cheap.

Newcastle are trying hard to sign him but with an alleged £60m price tag, obstacles have so far yet to be cleared.

Still, there are alternatives including the likes of Ollie Watkins, Nicolas Jackson and Wolves’ Jorgen Strand-Larsen.

Yet, according to French reporter, Julien Laurens, Sporting CP attacker Conrad Harder is also on their radar.

Speaking on Sky Sports’ Transfer Talk podcast on Wednesday, he stated: “They’ve tried to find a replacement for him [Isak]. They like Conrad Harder at Sporting, but he is not as developed already compared to the others we mentioned already. Certainly no Premier League experience, unlike the other three [Wissa, Jackson, Larsen].”

Amid interest from Milan, reports in Italy have indicated that the Portuguese club are seeking a fee of £24m to sell this summer, although that does seem unlikely given they have already sold Viktor Gyokeres to Arsenal.

Speaking of the Gunners’ new striker, Harder has already been described as “the next Viktor Gyokeres” by Scouted Football. Here’s why.

How Harder compares to Wissa and Watkins

It’s abundantly clear that Wissa is Newcastle’s leading target this month and while they would love to sign someone like Watkins too, that one feels more unlikely.

Yet, by landing a bargain deal for Harder before the transfer window slams shut on 1st September, they’d be acquiring a raw player but someone who is actually already more complete than the pair of them.

Harder had to play second fiddle to Gyokeres in Lisbon last term but he still caught the eye, with the 20-year-old scoring 13 goals and supplying ten assists across 54 appearances in all competitions. It’s worth noting that those involvements came from just 20 starts. Impressive work indeed.

The Dane does need to refine his skillset but it’s clear to see why he’s already being compared to Gyokeres. Slightly stockier, talent scout Jacek Kulig hails his “powerful finishing” and his “excellent top speed” while describing him as a “complete forward”.

So, what do the numbers say? Well, it looks favourable when comparing him to Watkins and Wissa.

It’s safe to say that the Sporting youngster isn’t as prolific as the more proven talents of Wissa and Watkins just yet.

However, in every metric besides progressive passes, the Denmark youth international has proven himself to be an incredible talent, undeniably showcasing that he’s more complete across a whole range of facets.

Harder is not just a goalscorer but he’s capable of creating goals on a regular basis, notably registering more key passes than Watkins, who actually finished as the Premier League’s leading assist maker back in 2023/24.

Furthermore, he’s capable of dribbling with the ball on a regular basis, ranking highly for progressive carrying, and he can hold the ball up well, winning far more aerial duels per 90 minutes.

Conrad Harder for Sporting Club.

Newcastle fans will be holding out for a big-money striker, particularly with Isak’s future in doubt, but they could do far worse than bringing Harder to England.

Celtic submit offer to sign £5k-a-week Premier League player and get reply

Celtic have now received a reply after submitting an offer worth a total of £2.25m for a Premier League midfielder, according to a new transfer update that has emerged.

Rodgers in positive spirits at Celtic

The Hoops couldn’t have asked for a more ideal start to the season, winning their opening two Scottish Premiership matches, topping the table immediately.

Celtic won 2-0 at Aberdeen on Saturday, and speaking after the game, manager Brendan Rodgers couldn’t hide his happiness at both the performance and result.

“It was a really good performance. We controlled the game and dominated it. We had two outstanding goals and had other opportunities to make it even more comfortable, and their keeper also made some really good saves. Then, when we had to defend, we were really strong – our two centre-halves, and then even Auston coming into the game as well.

Brendan Rodgers

“So as a team I thought we were excellent, and then the context of the game – obviously it’s early in the season and playing Aberdeen in the first competitive game after the Scottish Cup and them beating us, we knew there was going to be something in it for them, but we played with a lot of quality and a lot of heart today, and that pleased me.’

It’s now a case of Celtic kicking on and strengthening their squad before the end of the summer transfer window, and a new update has emerged regarding one target.

Celtic recieve reply after bid submitted worth £2.25m

According to a new update from Hammers News, Celtic have seen an opening bid rejected by West Ham for midfielder Andy Irving.

The offer in question is thought to be worth £1.75m plus £500k in add-ons, with the Hammers instead demanding £3.5m for the Scotland international.

Andy Irving on Scotland duty.

Irving, described as a ‘fan favourite’ in the report, could be an astute signing by Celtic this summer, having been lauded by West Ham manager Graham Potter for many key attributes.

“His spirit, application and training merited that start. I think the decision was clear for Andy because he’s trained really well and I think it’s important for the group to know that. I’m pleased with him.”

Despite this, Irving did only manage one Premier League start in the whole of last season, showing that he may not be considered a key part of West Ham’s plans heading into the new season.
