    THE BIGGER PICTURE

The ex-Manchester City and Leicester winger was far more diplomatic, saying the Premier League, Bundesliga, Serie A, Ligue 1 and La Liga are still the best five competitions in world football, but did express his belief that the SPL is on the rise. He also described Ronaldo and his fellow stars who made the switch during the league's recruitment drive in 2023 as "pioneers".

  • WHAT MAHREZ SAID

Mahrez told when asked if he agreed with Ronaldo's 'top five' claim: "No. I think the five big European leagues are ahead, and then we can start to compete with the other leagues.

"We're not too far off, I think. After that, the goal isn't to be the best league in the world right now. We're looking at the long term.

"Those like me who have arrived are here at the beginning of this adventure, we're a bit like pioneers. We're helping them make this league stronger. And frankly, over my two seasons, I've felt progress in the teams, the coaches, the tactics and the organisation. They're trying to get there, and I think they'll get there. They're putting in the effort and they really want it. "

'There's inherent risk' – Alexi Lalas warns that any clubs pursuing USMNT's Giovanni Reyna, be it in Serie A or MLS, 'have to kick those tires' to ensure he can contribute

Lalas says teams looking to sign the Dortmund midfielder might be taking a gamble due to Reyna's recent poor playing performances

Lalas says declining stock makes transfer a gamblePotential MLS move could make Reyna a starHopes Dortmund exit tied to career upsideGetty Images SportWHAT HAPPENED

Addressing Giovanni Reyna's deteriorating position at Borussia Dortmund, former USMNT player Alexi Lalas said the 22-year-old's dramatic fall has resulted in both a decline in transfer value and reputation. To that end, he said that even a move to MLS would come with some risk.

“Anybody signing Gio Reyna, given what has happened and how far his stock has fallen, there's inherent risk," Lalas said on his State of the Union podcast. “You have to kick those tires and worry that this is not a temporary type of event or something that this player can't grow out of. So from an MLS perspective, maybe it's even more of a risk because of the structure of Major League Soccer…. obviously it looks like he's going to Parma right now. But if someone like Gio Reyna, given the circumstances were to come to Major League Soccer, I mean, he's not coming for pennies.

“He is going to get paid a good substantial amount of money, even though there is a desperation kind of to get him to someplace to play that we have talked about. And so he's going to take that salary cap money could take, you know, be a designated player.”

AdvertisementWHAT LALAS SAID

Lalas said that Reyna's next club – whether Serie A's Parma or in MLS – will need to carefully evaluate the risks.

“You're just hoping that this player – that we all know is talented and has incredible potential – was just in a untenable situation," he said. "As opposed to a player that is really problematic right now and it doesn't matter where he is, he is going to struggle for whatever reason. It could be he just stunted his growth. It could be he's developed bad habits.

"I don't ultimately know what it is. I don't want any of that to happen. But yes, of course there's risk. But I would think there would there would be risk for anybody in MLS or if it turns out to be true that he is, is going to Parma, there is a risk involved there too.”

THE BIGGER PICTURE

Giovanni Reyna has one year left on his current contract and is set to leave Borussia Dortmund after being reportedly told that he was surplus at the club.

Rahane wants Mumbai to be 'courageous' in their quest for Ranji glory

After eight seasons without a Ranji Trophy title, Mumbai captain Ajinkya Rahane wants his side to be courageous. Courageous to take 20 wickets, courageous to take risks, courageous to show intent, and all this to culminate in outright wins in the space of four days.Mumbai have done that so far by grabbing bonus-point wins in the first two rounds of the new Ranji season. First, they handed Bihar an innings defeat by bowling them out for exactly 100 in both innings, and then thrashed Andhra by 10 wickets at home. In both games, Mumbai made a strong statement by making the opposition follow on, which is not usually the norm in red-ball cricket these days.Mumbai have almost mirrored their start from last season when they started with a nine-wicket win and an innings win, but their campaign went wonky after that, and they failed to make the knockouts. The key this time will be to remain consistent.Related

“It’s been a very good start for us this season,” Rahane said in Mumbai after their win against Andhra. “The challenge is to be consistent because when you want to win the Ranji Trophy, it is all about being consistent throughout the period of time. We are looking to take one game at a time. [It’s a] home-away format so the conditions keep changing, so we have to be in the moment, try and see how the wicket will be in Kerala [for the next game] and play to the conditions.”Mumbai can be proud that while they have lost both their tosses so far, their bowlers have stepped up to allow only one opposition batter to reach the 50 mark in four innings. It was the fast bowlers who came together in Patna against Bihar, and then the left-arm spinner Shams Mulani, the second-highest wicket-taker in the last Ranji season, who picked up a 10-wicket match haul against Andhra.Mulani has been Mumbai’s frontline spinner for a few seasons now, having taken 45 wickets in the 2021-22 Ranji season and another 46 last time which earned him call-ups for the Duleep Trophy and the Irani Cups over the last couple of years. As was the case against Andhra, Mulani often comes on as first-change and makes life tough for right-hand batters from around the wicket by either targeting the stumps or sticking the off-stump line when there is grip in the surface.

Rahane’s target is to play 100 Tests

Ajinkya Rahane’s obvious and immediate target while playing the Ranji Trophy is to win the title, which Mumbai haven’t been able to since 2015-16. At the same time, he is grinding it out in domestic cricket with hopes of returning to the Test side, which he did successfully last year for the WTC final in which he scored 89 and 46. But after two low scores in the subsequent Caribbean tour, he has been dropped again, and having played 85 Tests so far, he wishes to play another 15. After missing the first Ranji game this season with a stiff neck, he got to bat only once against Andhra and fell for a first-ball duck.
“I’m looking to do well for Mumbai one game at a time. The aim is to lift the Ranji Trophy and bigger aim is to play 100 Test matches.”

Mulani worked hard on his fitness before this season so that he could take the load of bowling in all three formats for Mumbai, whom he also led against Bihar when Rahane was out with a stiff neck. His team-mate Shreyas Iyer believes it’s “high time” Mulani is “elevated to the next level”.”I have changed the recovery process because when you play all three formats, and especially for Mumbai, you have to go out there every day and give your heart out,” Mulani had said after the second day’s play. “And it takes a toll on your body. The recovery process and… you have to be a bit professional and [monitor] the sleeping timings and go to the gym, keep working on the shoulder and the back so that it doesn’t break down somewhere. So that’s what I’ve been focusing on, which is why the last two years were great for me personally, but if I want to continue that in the coming years, I need to keep my body up to the mark.”Rahane will be 36 this year, and he wants to impart all the courage he can as a senior player to Mumbai’s younger crop. In his own words, it could mean creating chances as a bowler, taking the first-innings lead if an outright win is not possible, or showing intent as a batter.”It’s not about being safe,” Rahane explained. “You have to be courageous. It’s a long tournament, and you win matches only when your bowlers take wickets. So you first aim is to take the innings lead, then think about how much time you have at your disposal because in four days very few matches produce outright results. If you play on an absolutely (flat) wicket, the outright result is very difficult. So, first-innings lead, and with time on hand, we decide to go for an outright win. Personally, I feel we shouldn’t play on a flat deck.”It [courageous] doesn’t mean you go out there and slog. It’s all about taking that extra risk or maybe playing with intent. Thinking about your own performance, you go into your shell. But when you put your team first, play your game, there is no fear of failure… that should be the attitude.”The initial two wins for Mumbai have come in the absence of a number of regulars: Sarfaraz Khan and Tushar Deshpande have been away to play against England Lions, Shivam Dube and Yashasvi Jaiswal are part of the India squad for the T20Is against Afghanistan, and Shardul Thakur and Prithvi Shaw are injured. For the next game, against Kerala, they will have only Dube back but will lose Iyer, who had returned to the Ranji circuit after five years. Whatever the changes in personnel and the challenges of conditions in Kerala, Rahane will expect one thing from his players: to be courageous.

Chahal becomes first bowler to to take 200 wickets in IPL

Rajasthan Royals legspinner Yuzvendra Chahal has become the first bowler in the history of IPL to reach the mark of 200 wickets. Chahal got to the milestone when he dismissed Mohammad Nabi of Mumbai Indians (MI) in Jaipur on Monday. After Mumbai elected to bat, Chahal was introduced into the attack in the eighth over of the innings and struck with his third ball. It was a gently floated legbreak that caught the leading edge of Nabi’s bat for a simple return catch to the bowler.Chahal, who went past Dwayne Bravo as the highest wicket-taker in IPL history last season, created the record in his 153rd match. It was, however, an expensive evening for Chahal where he picked 1 for 48 off his four overs.ESPNcricinfo Ltd

“I never even thought about it [becoming the highest wicket-taker] when I started playing the IPL,” Chahal had said last year after toppling Bravo. “I was with Mumbai Indians for three years [when I started], but my journey actually started from 2014. There have been a lot of ups and downs, and I’ve enjoyed a lot too. I’ve learnt from my downs, and what I’m today is because of my downfalls and [support from] my close ones.”Chahal was first signed up by Mumbai Indians in 2011 but only made his IPL debut in 2013. That was the only game he played for the Mumbai franchise in the IPL, going wicketless across four overs against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) at Eden Gardens. He was then acquired by Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) in 2014, and that’s where his IPL career really took off. Chahal played 113 matches for RCB from 2014 to 2021, and picked up 139 wickets at an average of 22.03 and an impressive economy rate of 7.58. He still remains the highest wicket-taker for RCB in the IPL. However, he was not retained by RCB ahead of the IPL 2022 mega auction and was picked for INR 6.5 crore by Royals.Chahal has represented Royals since 2022. He bagged 27 wickets at an economy of 7.75 for them during their run to the IPL final that year, including his only five-for in the IPL so far – 5 for 40 against KKR. Three of those wickets were part of a hat-trick – he got Shreyas Iyer, Shivam Mavi and Pat Cummins in what was a four-wicket over, with Venkatesh Iyer dismissed earlier.Chahal has 13 wickets so far in IPL 2024, and sits at the top of the list along with Jasprit Bumrah and Harshal Patel.

Lamine Yamal's two-goal masterclass sets the tone for Barcelona in ruthless demolition of Jesse Lingard's FC Seoul as lively Marcus Rashford bags first assist for new club

Lamine Yamal scored twice and Marcus Rashford bagged an assist as Barcelona thrashed Jesse Lingard's FC Seoul 7-3 in their latest pre-season outing.

Barcelona immediately showed off their quality on the ball as Lamine Yamal found Pedri inside the box with a backheel pass before the midfielder shot wide. The 18-year-old then showed exactly why he is a Ballon d'Or candidate as he glided through the FC Seoul defence before firing a shot that rebounded off the post for Robert Lewandowski to tap it in for his first goal of the season. Just minutes later, Yamal doubled the Catalan side's lead with a spectacular long-range strike after another mazy run.

That did not turn out to be a killer blow, though, as Seoul fought back with two goals in the space of 20 minutes. The comeback began when Yamal lost possession cheaply near his own box and Cho Young Wook scored with a well-taken finish. Seoul's second goal came on the back of a delightful Lingard flick, which built up towards a brilliantly worked goal that saw Yazan Al-Arab fire past Barca goalkeeper Joan Garcia.

Yamal then decided to turn it on once again in injury time of the first half to put Barca back in the lead after Dani Olmo's delightful through ball. The Blaugrana's new No.10 sat a Seoul defender down with a clever dummy before unleashing a thunderous shot to double his goal account.

Head coach Hansi Flick rang the changes for the second half, with new loan signing Marcus Rashford looking lively right from the off. However, it was Andreas Christensen's spectacular long-range strike that opened the floodgates for Barca in the 55th minute. Ferran Torres and Gavi both followed up with goals of their own before FC Seoul grabbed one back through Han-min Jung. Torres then had the final say as he got on the end of a deft pass from Rashford to close out a thumping 7-3 victory for Barca.

As it was last season, Yamal was at the centre of all the action through the first half as the 18-year-old superstar managed to set up the first goal of the game and then scored a brace himself before being rested for the second half with the Man of the Match prize sewn up.Gavi also impressed as he eyes a return to top form after an injury-ravaged 2024-25 campaign. He managed to control the second half through midfield and also scored Barcelona's sixth on the night.

Joan Garcia did not have a very notable game against FC Seoul; however, Marcus Rashford bagged his first goal contribution in Blaugrana as he set up Torres for Barcelona's seventh goal of the game. Roony Bardghji only had one major involvement in the game this time, which was a wayward pass back to Wojciech Szczesny that almost ended in a goal for Seoul.

In the meantime, according to , Premier League sides Tottenham, United and Newcastle are closely watching how the situation develops.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

The French striker enjoyed a productive six-month loan spell in Turin, scoring 10 goals and assisting twice. He has publicly stated his desire to stay at Juve, who welcomed him warmly. But Les Parisiens, who spent €90 million (£76m/$97m) including bonuses to sign him from Eintracht Frankfurt in 2023, are unwilling to let him go on cheap or delayed terms. He is currently training with PSG’s U21s, clearly no longer in Luis Enrique’s first-team plans, and eager to secure a move away.

Juventus general manager Damien Comolli addressed the situation on Thursday, saying: "Kolo Muani wants to come back and play for Juventus, we're working on it."

Gavaskar to BCCI: 'Double or triple' Ranji fees to 'look after the feeder system'

Gavaskar also wants board to take a re-look at the domestic schedule, and players to “never forget” importance of domestic cricket

ESPNcricinfo staff16-Mar-2024Sunil Gavaskar has urged the BCCI to implement the Test cricket incentive scheme in the Ranji Trophy as well, saying it would encourage domestic players and look after the feeder system.Earlier this month, the BCCI announced that those who play 75% of India’s Tests in a season will earn INR 45 lakh per Test, and those who play 50 to 75% of Tests will earn INR 30 lakh. This is in addition to the match fee of INR 15 lakh.”That is a wonderful thing by the BCCI to reward those who would be playing [Test cricket],” Gavaskar said on the sidelines of an event in Mumbai on Friday. “But I would also request the BCCI to ensure that the feeder to the Test team, which is the Ranji Trophy, is also looked after.”Related

Shardul Thakur: 'Extremely tough to play ten games with three-day gaps'

BCCI warns players: Don't prioritise IPL over domestic cricket

Currently, a player earns around INR 2 lakh per match in the Ranji Trophy. If he plays every match in the season and his team makes it to the final, he ends up with ten games. The match fee for the Vijay Hazare Trophy is INR 50,000, and for the Syed Mushtaq Ali INR 17,500.”[If your team doesn’t qualify for the knockouts], your whole year’s earnings are around 20 lakh, which is like the base price in the IPL,” a domestic player told ESPNcricinfo. “If there are proper contracts, then players will feel more motivated to play red-ball cricket.”Gavaskar said: “If the Ranji Trophy fee can be doubled or tripled, certainly there will be a lot more people playing the Ranji Trophy, [and a] lot less pullouts. They will all be wanting to play with the slab system – [if] every ten first-class matches you get that much more – so I would request the BCCI to look at that aspect as well.”Gavaskar also asked for a re-look at the short gap between Ranji matches, and suggested that the Ranji Trophy should be played from October to mid-December, and the domestic season should end with the 50-over Vijay Hazare Trophy so that it ties in smoothly with the IPL.Currently, the Ranji Trophy is the last tournament in the domestic calendar. The 2023-24 season ended with the Ranji Trophy on March 15, with the IPL starting from March 22.”That way, everybody will be available to play [the Ranji Trophy], except for the ones featuring for India,” Gavaskar said. “There will be no real excuse to pull out. With the one-dayers beginning from January, people who are in the IPL can have enough practice from them.”Gavaskar also supported the BCCI’s directive to players to prioritise domestic cricket.”It is something that should be looked up [to] by every cricketer – domestic cricket is actually how they have come up,” he said. “If they had not started at the domestic level, be it the domestic T20, the domestic one-day tournament or the Ranji Trophy, they wouldn’t be where they are.”Very few cricketers have actually come up from not having played domestic cricket. They always have played some domestic cricket – it could be junior cricket or Under-19 cricket or something like that. That is something the players should never forget.”
