Hampshire batter Aneurin Donald joins Derbyshire

Moves in search of first-team cricket after injury-interrupted spell on south coast

ESPNcricinfo staff05-Oct-2023Derbyshire have signed Aneurin Donald on a two-year contract from Hampshire. An explosive batter who can also keep wicket, Donald came through at Glamorgan and, aged 19, equalled the record for the fastest double-century in first-class cricket, off 123 balls. He moved to Hampshire at the end of 2018, but missed back-to-back seasons in 2020 and 2021 with an anterior cruciate ligament injury. Donald was part of the squad that won the Vitality T20 Blast in 2022 but he only played 64 times across formats in his five years on the south coast, and was loaned to Derbyshire this summer, featuring twice in the Blast.”Aneurin impressed us during his short spell with us earlier this year and we were eager to bring him to the club,” Derbyshire’s head of cricket, Mickey Arthur, said. “He’s a powerful batter, capable of taking a game away from you very quickly, and he will also provide cover in the wicketkeeper department, an area we needed depth in.Related

“He has been a part of a very good Hampshire side, one which has routinely competed for trophies, that’s the kind of player we want to bring to the club as we look to improve.”Donald, who scored two hundreds as Hampshire reached the final of the 2023 Metro Bank One-Day Cup, said he had turned down other offers in order to join Derbyshire, where he hoped to gain greater first-team opportunities.”I’m excited to have joined Derbyshire permanently; I know from my loan spell what a great group of players we have at the club and the high standards demanded,” he said. “At this point in my career, I need to be playing cricket and I want to be contributing to success, that’s why I’ve come to Derbyshire, because I believe this is a project I can fit into.”I had a few options at other counties, but the level of coaching and the project which is happening at Derbyshire really stood out to me. Mickey has spoken to me about his ambition for the Club and I’m looking forward to playing a part in that journey.”Giles White, Hampshire’s director of cricket, added: “Naturally, we are sad to see Aneurin go, but we understand and support his decision to find consistent game time at this stage of his career.”Aneurin has been an extremely popular member of the club since he joined in 2019. He is a great team man and over the years he has shifted the course of many games in the team’s favour.”We wish him nothing but the best for the future as he transitions into another phase of his career and thank him for his wholehearted commitment to Hampshire Cricket since his arrival.”

Mathews points finger at umpires: 'Need to use common sense in using technology'

According to Angelo Mathews, the on-field umpires who adjudged him timed out on Monday had admitted to Sri Lanka’s coaching staff that they erred in not checking how much time had elapsed between the previous dismissal, and Mathews’ helmet strap breaking. It appears that Mathews heard of this admission second-hand.”The umpires [Marais Erasmus and Richard Illingworth] also admitted that it was an equipment malfunction and they could have gone upstairs and checked,” Mathews said in his post-match press conference. Sri Lanka coach Chris Silverwood also said, speaking to reporters after the game, that the team’s coaching staff had spoken to match officials about the dismissal, and that conversations between the two groups were ongoing.Either way, Mathews was drawing a line between what constituted a fair “timed out” dismissal, and what constituted time taken out of the game to replace faulty equipment.Related

  • Umpires informed Mathews of timed-out threat before helmet malfunction

  • Mathews on timed-out dismissal: 'Never seen a team or a player stoop so low'

  • Shakib on Mathews dismissal: 'Felt like I was at war, did what I had to for my team to win'

  • Mathews becomes the first to be dismissed timed out in international cricket

However, the playing conditions, as it stands, does not make allowances for equipment malfunction – it only stipulates that the new batter be ready to receive the ball within two minutes of the previous dismissal, which, in a strict interpretation of the rule, Mathews was not. However, umpires frequently allow equipment to be changed mid-over if required – helmets and bats in particular. If the strap had broken one ball into Mathews’ innings, for example, there likely would have been no issues with his calling for a replacement and his taking some time picking one.”We talk about safety of the players, and you guys tell me if it’s right for me to take my guard without my helmet on,” Mathews said. “That’s where the umpires could have done a bigger job at the time because they could have gone back and checked. A wicketkeeper for a spinner they don’t let keep without his helmet. So how can I take my guard without my helmet? It’s completely an equipment malfunction.”What’s the point not checking at that time and then checking it afterwards?” Mathews continued. “You need to have your common sense in terms of using technology. It was clearly malfunction – it [the strap] just came off. I didn’t need to pull it and break it.”Although during the mid-match break, fourth umpire Adrian Holdstock had told Ian Bishop on the Star Sports broadcast that “in the instance this afternoon, the batter wasn’t ready to receive the ball within those two minutes even before the strap became an issue for him,” Mathews was correct in claiming that in fact he had five more seconds before the two minutes were up, when his strap broke.Fourth umpire Holdstock had also suggested at the halfway point of the match that it was the batter’s responsibility to have “all your equipment in place”.Mathews scoffed at this idea.”That’s quite laughable. It is our responsibility, yes – if I went out to bat against a fast bowler, it’s my responsibility obviously,” he said. “But something coming off, do you really think I would know if it’s going to come off? I don’t understand the logic.”

'He'd have killed us' – Troy Deeney opens up on moment friend saved him & his mum's life following attack by his dad when he was just nine years old as police dispatched two riot vans & four squad cars

Speaking on the inaugural episode of the Best Mode On Podcast, Watford legend Troy Deeney discusses a harrowing incident involving his father

Adebayo Akinfenwa is joined by former Walsall, Watford and Birmingham City striker Troy Deeney in the first episode of the brand new Beast Mode On Podcast, with the 37-year-old providing an emotional account of his life before, during and after football.

Deeney, who retired in 2024 after scoring over 200 goals during an impressive career that saw him play in League Two, League One, the Championship and the Premier League, opens up on a physical altercation he and his mum endured when he was just nine years old, a distressing incident in his life that magnified what matters most to him, above all else – family.

Scroll down to read Deeney's account of what went on that day, with the full episode of the Best Mode On podcast available now, via YouTube and Spotify.

    'YOU TAKE A KICKING'

In an emotional exchange with Akinfenwa, where he reflects on that particular event in his past that is ingrained in his memory, Deeney says: "I had the incident where he (Deeney's father) beat up me and my mum, I was nine at the time. I believe in the snowball effect. If I can influence one person that watches this… that one does three, that three does five and so on and so forth. That incident, now I do therapy, was fight or flight. My mum had left my dad, my dad didn't like it, and for about three to four months we weren't allowed to tell my dad where we lived. If he met us or picked us up it was like at an aunt's house, far from us.

"On this particular day, my dad had been out and about doing whatever he's doing. I know now he was high and drunk and angry. We get in the car, and my little brother, who would've been five or six, said; 'We ride our bikes this way home'. Dad's now like; 'Alright, tell me where'. We get there, he knocks the door, pushes my mum through the door… at this point he's hitting my mum. I'm nine. It doesn't matter whether I'm nine or 90, no one's going to put their hands on my mum. So you stay there and you take a kicking."

  • 'WE'D BE DEAD'

"To this day, I promise you this isn't an exaggeration, I'd be dead if one of my little mates didn't come and knock the door. We'd be dead. He'd have killed us. My little mate knocks the door, my dad opens it, screams at this kid. This kid, Lee, runs home, tells his mum; 'There's a man at Troy's house, never seen him before, screaming and shouting – I can hear people screaming'. To get my dad out of the house there were two riot vans and four squad cars. Think how many people that is to get him out."

    'IT'S HEARTBREAKING'

Asked how that experience impacted him as a nine-year-old, Deeney adds: "Obviously it's heartbreaking. Then it goes into embarrassment. I had to have a social worker at school. So now, imagine I've got someone, at the time felt like your (Akinfenwa's) size, sat on them kiddie chairs, and they're sat next to me all the time and I felt like everyone was watching me. As soon as I went to secondary school, a switch flicked and I was like; 'Right, how do I do it so that no one does that again?' I've got the record at my old school for the most detentions of the year – 252. Everyone thought; 'He's crazy'. Do all the stupid sh*t we could do, so that people would leave me alone.

"Football has three outcomes – you win, you lose, you draw. Guess what? You do it again. Championship or EFL, you do it in three days. Prem – four or five. The most negative thing that can happen is someone online, or a pundit, goes; 'He's not very good'. And that's the worst that can happen? Put me in that atmosphere all day, every day."

Sri Lanka's finishing failings exposed against Australia

Even though Sri Lanka have made large totals in recent games, a closer look reveals a deeper issue

Madushka Balasuriya16-Oct-20231:23

Maharoof: ‘Absolutely pathetic batting display from Sri Lanka’

Sri Lanka’s batting has been lopsided in all their three World Cup games so far but it was only against Australia that it was truly exposed. After racking up a 125-run opening stand, they lost 10 wickets for just 84 runs. While it’s easy to say it was just a bad day, it would be disingenuous not to acknowledge the signs leading up to this meltdown. While last month’s dire Asia Cup final – 50 all out – is still fresh in the memory, you could argue that was down to facing one of the best fast-bowling attacks in conditions that favoured them. What is of greater concern for Sri Lanka is how they have fared on more batter-friendly surfaces. If you include the two World Cup warm-up matches against Bangladesh and Afghanistan, Sri Lanka have posted totals of 263, 294, 326, 344 and 209. A closer look, however, unearths promising positions wasted in each of those games.Related

Angelo Mathews replaces injured Matheesha Pathirana in Sri Lanka's World Cup squad

Against Bangladesh, Sri Lanka scored only 131 runs after the 20th over; against Afghanistan they went from 240 for 2 in the 30th to 294 all out; and against Pakistan they scored only 115 runs in the final 20 overs. Even against South Africa there is an argument to be made that after Kusal Mendis’ blistering start, he might not have lost his wicket as early as he did if he had adequate support from his team-mates.”Despite our promising start, we deeply regret not being able to sustain it, resulting in us being limited to a score of 209 runs,” Sri Lankan opener Pathum Nissanka said after their five-wicket defeat to Australia. “On a wicket like this, I believe we should aim for a total closer to 300 runs, and this was a contributing factor to our defeat.”Nissanka, who scored 61 off 67 balls during the opening stand of 125 with Kusal Perera, is doing his job for the most part. The Sri Lankan blueprint is pretty straightforward – lay a platform and then launch. But they haven’t been able to launch as far as they would have liked to.”To be candid, the opposition’s bowlers consistently hit good areas during the middle overs, which created a challenging situation for our batsmen,” Nissanka said. “Unfortunately, we couldn’t handle it as effectively as we would have liked. Had we managed to play better, we could have achieved a total of 300.”Against Australia, the openers performed but Sri Lanka’s two centurions this tournament – Mendis and Sadeera Samarawickrama – did not, falling to Zampa for 9 and 8 respectively.”That’s the nature of cricket. We performed admirably in the previous two games, but such fluctuations can occur,” Nissanka said. “Our focus now is to learn from our mistakes and strive for strong performances in the upcoming matches.”The lack of consistent output from the middle and lower order is of greater concern, but when asked why such collapses were happening, Nissanka evaded the question.”As a team, we play every game hoping to win. Unfortunately, we lost the last three matches. we had played well before that. And we hope to play well in the remaining matches.”After suffering three defeats in three games, Sri Lanka’s middle and lower order need to start chipping in before it gets too late. If not, when the top four crumble under the burden placed on them as they did against Australia, such collapses will become more commonplace regardless of the type of surface they play on.

'Just like Mbappe!' – Athletic Club accused of 'bullying' Nico Williams into new contract and making Spain winger 'play with Barcelona's emotions'

Athletic Club pulled a fast one on Barcelona for the second year running as the Basque club announced that they had tied down Nico Williams to a 10-year contract. The Spain international had been linked with a move to the Catalan side this summer with personal term reportedly having been agreed. However, the club had been waiting to achieve 1:1 with La Liga's financial rules before making the move.

Athletic Club have won the battle with Barcelona yet again after their tussle earlier in the month, when the Basque side had made an enquiry into the La Liga champions' financial statements when it became obvious that Barcelona were ready to trigger Williams' release clause. Joan Laporta and co. are said to be surprised by Williams' renewal as they had been told by the player's camp that they were waiting for Barcelona. Fans are now claiming that Bilbao have bullied the 22-year-old into signing a new contract at San Mames.

X user @Brendon_Ndlovu said: "The bullied him into renewing. Made it nearly impossible for him to move around in his own city. Vandalised his murals and used his family to pressure him into renewing just like Mbappe at PSG."

@AzraxSypher said: "Lmaoooo Barca have no pull."

@Zayyad_Yazeed added: "This boy have done dirty to Barcelona honestly."

@FowobiofLagos added: "Why was he playing with Barcelona’s emotions."

@UTDFondre concluded: "Nico Williams this, Nico Williams that.. you have seen now Barcelona fans. Better go and sign Rashford now…"

AFPTHE BIGGER PICTURE

Williams had long been Barcelona's option to take up the left-wing role under Hansi Flick with Raphinha expected to move into the No. 10 role next season. As such, they will now likely go back to their secondary and tertiary options in Manchester United outcast Marcus Rashford and Liverpool's Luis Diaz.

WHAT NEXT FOR BARCELONA?

Smith gets back to the grind in search for his best form

He continues to insist there is no end point in sight for his prolific career amid talk of when the team may start to change

Alex Malcolm12-Dec-2023Steven Smith cut a familiar figure at Australia’s optional training session at the WACA ground on Monday. It started at 1.30pm on the dot, and there was Smith, the first and only player out there on the lone centre-wicket net with coach Andrew McDonald and bowling coach Daniel Vettori carrying their trusty side-arms.While the bowlers and Australia’s two World Cup heroes Travis Head and Mitchell Marsh took the full day off, Smith was doing what Smith does. Grinding. Getting into the Test match rhythm. Honing his defence. His leave. Receiving an abnormally high volume of throws compared to his team-mates.Related

Australia won't rush the search for Warner's successor

“It was a good hit out,” Smith said before training at Perth Stadium on Tuesday. “It was nice to use the centre-wicket out at the WACA. Usually, it’s pretty similar in terms of pace and bounce to what we get out here. I feel like I’m hitting the ball nicely so it’s good prep and I’ll get another hit in today. See how we go. I might come tomorrow if I feel I need it. If not, I’ll put the feet up and get ready for Thursday.”The end is near in Test cricket for David Warner, and there has been speculation about whether Smith will follow suit sooner rather than later. But his love of the grind and his desire to get better show no signs of abating and he’s making no noises about pulling the pin any time soon.”I’m not in any hurry to make any decisions,” Smith said. The start of the Test summer in Australia has been dominated by talk of who will eventually replace Warner, and whether Lance Morris might debut. But whether Smith will return to his otherworldly run-scoring ways is a question lingering in the background. In a year of extraordinary team triumphs, Smith has been below his own exceptionally high standards. It is something he admits. He failed to score a half-century on the Test tour of India. A series return that would have been unthinkable prior to the tour given his outrageous performance in the 2017 series. His magnificent century in the World Test Championship final should not be forgotten or undervalued, but it was overshadowed by Head. That hundred sounded ominous warning signs to England ahead of the Ashes series. Their 2019 PTSD became real again at Lord’s with another flawless away Ashes century. But a wrist injury curtailed him from there although he fought through for two two half-centuries in the final Test at The Oval in a losing cause. The wrist tendon issue impacted his preparation for the ODI World Cup. He was a passenger rather than a leading man in Australia’s remarkable run to the title. His reluctance to buy in to Australia’s ultra-aggressive method caused him to be shifted from No. 3 to No. 4, much to his displeasure.Steven Smith has put in plenty of hours ahead of the first Test of the summer•Getty Images

He also stayed for the T20I series against India to try and make his case to remain in Australia’s plans for next year’s T20 World Cup but did not dispel the doubts about whether he is fit for purpose to be an opener in that tournament. But his value to Australia’s Test side remains as high as ever. Even in a mediocre year, he has contributed three centuries and two half-centuries in 20 innings. A calendar year average of 43.16 is Australia’s fourth-best by some margin behind Usman Khawaja, Head and the small sample size of Marsh. But it’s well below his dizzying career mark. That has dipped from 61.62 this time last year, after the last Perth Test against West Indies where he peeled off an unbeaten double century, to 58.61, his lowest mark since the start of Pakistan’s 2016-17 tour.He knows he’s been below his best and, as ever, one of Test cricket’s great problem-solvers has his eyes on ensuring normal service resumes.”Just score runs,” Smith said. “I don’t have to sort of reinvent the wheel. I think I’ve performed at a high standard for a long period of time. You’re right, I was probably below my standards of what I want. So, for me, it’s not overthinking it, not overplaying too much, not changing too much. Just going out and trusting what I do and doing it for longer periods of time hopefully to get the big runs and hopefully help our team as success.”He was back in the nets Tuesday grinding away again. Facing Australia’s big quicks. Facing McDonald’s throws. Australia’s original ‘Mr Cricket’ Michael Hussey had been called in to help the coaching staff handle the throwing workload at training.Smith’s team-mates were copping blows on the spicy green-tinged surfaces. Middle stumps were knocked back. Outside edges were taken. Smith looked impenetrable despite a blow on the gloves, batting until he was told others needed a turn. He sat and waited until his team-mates got their work in before returning for more throwdowns. His hunger for batting remains insatiable.

NY Strikers go top of the table after Bulls sink to record low

After Gurbaz had helped Strikers get to 98, Hosein and Karunaratne triggered a spectacular slide to bowl Bulls out for 31

ESPNcricinfo staff04-Dec-2023Delhi Bulls sank to the lowest total in the Abu Dhabi T10’s seven-year history, folding for just 31 despite having Quinton de Kock, Johnson Charles, James Vince, Rilee Rossouw, Rovman Powell, Ravi Bopara and Dwayne Bravo in their ranks, as New York Strikers picked up their third win and a spot at the top of the table for now.If you score 98 for 4 in a ten-overs-a-side tournament where three figures are breached quite often, you expect to have it tough in the second half, but it was certainly not the case on the day for Strikers. Two wickets fell in the first over of the chase, to Akeal Hosein (3 for 7), one each in the second and third, and three in the fifth to Chamika Karunaratne (3 for 6). That was the end of the specialist batters bar Bopara, who was the only Bulls batter to get into double-digits, finishing with 16. Bulls were bowled out with three balls left in the innings, with four batters falling for ducks. In the first half, Rahmanullah Gurbaz dominated proceedings with a 24-ball 49 not out, as Strikers reached what was a just-about-par score of 98… it proved more than three times what Bulls could manage on the day.Bulls have now lost two on the bounce after starting with three wins in a row, and are at No. 3 on the table, while Strikers, after starting with a loss, have now won three in a row.Daniel Sams struck twice in the first over•Abu Dhabi T10Sams and Cox consign Team Abu Dhabi to fifth straight loss
Bangla Tigers 67 for 1 (Cox 56*, Fuller 1-21) beat Team Abu Dhabi 66 (Raees 20, Sams 3-11, Gabriel 2-2, Howell 2-9) by 9 wickets
Daniel Sams set up Bangla Tigers’ 9-wicket win before Jordan Cox delivered the knockout blow with a whirlwind half-century to leave Team Abu Dhabi with five defeats in as many games in the season. After asking Abu Dhabi to bat first, Sams got the Tigers off to the perfect start by dismissing Kyle Mayers and Tom Banton in the first over. Shannon Gabriel then removed Alex Hales in the third to make things worse for Abu Dhabi.Abu Dhabi could not recover from the early jolt and lost another four wickets for 14 runs.Abu Dhabi skipper Dwaine Pretorius scored a 13-ball 15 to try and steady his team, but they kept losing wickets regularly. Sams returned for a second over and removed Pretorius before No. 11 batter Rumman Raees gave his team a late boost by smashing three sixes to stay unbeaten on 20 off eight balls.James Fuller, opening the bowling in Abu Dhabi’s defence of 66, continued the momentum gained by Raees by having Avishka Fernando caught behind for a duck off his second delivery. But that was all the joy Abu Dhabi would enjoy as Cox made short work of the chase. The opener raced to a half-century off 21 balls and finished unbeaten on 56 off 23 as the Tigers won with more than half their overs left. Cox smashed ten fours and two sixes, and Kusal Mendis at the other end was almost a bystander, facing just four deliveries.Bangla Tigers are fifth on the table after the win, and still in the hunt to qualify for the knockouts.
