Man Utd’s 17-year-old "goalscoring machine" could be Wayne Rooney 2.0

It is fair to say that Manchester United’s 2024/25 campaign has not gone to plan as they currently sit 15th in the Premier League and closer to relegation than the top four.

They started the season with Erik ten Hag in charge and swiftly moved on from the Dutchman before appointing Ruben Amorim in November, but the Portuguese boss has failed to turn their form around.

The Red Devils fought back to secure a 2-2 draw with Everton at Goodison Park on Saturday, a game in which they lacked spark at the top of the pitch for the most part.

United do not have a centre-forward who can win them games with moments of magic, dragging them to wins, as they once did with a former Everton striker, Wayne Rooney.

Wayne Rooney's Manchester United record

Back in the summer of 2004, Manchester United swooped to sign the English number nine from the Toffees for a reported fee of £27m to bolster Sir Alex Ferguson’s attacking options.

Wayne Rooney's Manchester United record (timeless)

As you can see in the graphic above, Rooney went on to score a staggering 253 goals in all competitions for the Red Devils, leading the club to five Premier League titles in total.

He played in a multitude of positions during his time at Old Trafford, but the generational attacker scored 188 goals and provided 92 assists in 374 matches as either a centre-forward or a second striker, which shows that he provided a regular threat as both a scorer and a creator of goals.

Rasmus Hojlund (two) and Joshua Zirkzee (three) have combined for five goals in the Premier League this season, which shows that Amorim does not currently have a striker who is anywhere near as good as Rooney was for the club.

Man United may have their next Wayne Rooney

The Portuguese head coach could, however, have a young talent with the potential to develop into a Rooney-esque talent for the club in the future in the form of 17-year-old prodigy Chido Obi-Martin.

United signed the teenage prospect from Premier League rivals Arsenal in the summer and he made his first two top-flight appearances against Spurs and Everton this month.

The Denmark U18 international, who was described as a “wonderkid” by U23 scout Antonio Mango, has scored 12 goals and provided two assists in 12 appearances for the Red Devils at youth level this season, which has earned him first-team recognition in recent weeks.

As you can see in the table above, his impressive form for Manchester United this season comes off the back of his extraordinary campaign for Arsenal in the U18 Premier League last term.

Obi-Martin, who has scored seven goals in three FA Youth Cup matches this season, was once hailed as a “goalscoring machine” by talent scout Jacek Kulig, and his statistics for United and Arsenal back that claim up.

The young star, who scored ten goals in one U16 match against Liverpool in 2023, is a special centre-forward with potential, as further evidenced by Amorim’s decision to include him in the first-team squad in the last two games.

It is now down to Obi-Martin to make the step up to the first-team and translate his exceptional goalscoring prowess at youth level over to the senior side, as his form for the club’s academy suggests that the potential is there for him to emerge as the new Rooney at Old Trafford in the years to come.

Man Utd v Leicester City: Team news, where to watch, referee & VAR

Manchester United and Leicester City face off in the FA Cup this Friday evening, with the Red Devils’ quest to retain the famous domestic trophy continuing at Old Trafford.

United, who defeated Manchester City in the final last year, come up against former striker Ruud van Nistelrooy, who was actually in interim charge at Old Trafford earlier this season.

Both clubs have struggled in the Premier League this season, making the FA Cup a welcome distraction and a real chance to save their campaign with silverware.

Man Utd v Leicester City team news

Man Utd

The Red Devils were without Jonny Evans, Mason Mount and Luke Shaw last time out, and none of the trio look likely to feature at Old Trafford on Friday. A first appearance for January signing Patrick Dorgu could be one to keep an eye on, though.

United were also handed a new serious injury concern to Lisandro Martinez, who was stretched off against Crystal Palace and looks set for a lengthy spell on the sidelines.

Leicester City

Long-term absentees at Leicester City are Issahaku Fatawu, Ricardo Pereira, Nathaniel Opoku and Wilfred Ndidi, however, Ndidi has been back in training and van Nistelrooy has confirmed the Nigerian will return to the squad against Man Utd.

When asked about any more injuries, van Nistelrooy said: “There are two or three with light injuries who will be assessed.”

Where to watch Man Utd v Leicester City on TV

For viewers in the UK, the game will be shown live on ITV1, STV, ITVX and STV Player on Friday 7 February with kick-off at 8pm (GMT).

In the USA, the match will be streamed on ESPN+, and in Canada, live on TV with channel Sportsnet.

Man Utd v Leicester City referee and is there VAR?

Interestingly, the FA has decided this season that VAR will only be introduced from the fifth round of the FA Cup onwards, meaning fans won’t have to worry about it on Friday evening.

The man whose decision will be final is referee Michael Salisbury. He will be assisted by Matthew Wilkes and Steven Meredith, with Thomas Bramall as the fourth official.

Salisbury has taken charge of four games for both clubs, and as can be seen, the Red Devils enjoy having the 40-year-old as the man in the middle with a 100% win ratio.

This will be just the fourth time these two sides have faced off against each other in the FA Cup. The first two meetings were back in 1963 and 1976, both won by the Red Devils.

The last FA Cup clash was in 2021 at the quarter-final stages, where Leicester ran out 3-1 winners thanks to two goals from Kelechi Iheanacho and one from Youri Tielemans. Overall, though, Manchester United have more wins against Leicester throughout history.

Pereira must now finally ditch "outstanding" Wolves man after Djiga signing

Vitor Pereira will firmly believe that his Wolverhampton Wanderers side can beat the Premier League drop, having overseen a big 2-0 win over Aston Villa last time out.

The relegation-threatened Old Gold were full value for that victory come full-time, having restricted Unai Emery’s away side to just one big chance all game.

Whilst Pereira would have pleased with Matheus Cunha picking up another goal to add to this Premier League resume for the season, this dogged display at the back would have impressed him even more.

Already, it seems as if fresh recruit Emmanuel Agbadou has taken to the English game like a duck to water, with the ex-Stade De Reims ace now set to be joined by a new face in the heart of defence.

Wolves' deadline signing of Djiga

Right at the death of the window, Pereira added in another new defensive body in the form of Red Star Belgrade star Nasser Djiga, with the options now available to the Portuguese head coach looking plentiful.

Indeed, in the centre-back spots, the ex-Al Shabab manager has the aforementioned Agbadou that he can rely on who won a startling 18 duels recently against Arsenal, on top of rocks such as Matt Doherty and Toti Gomes who performed in a similarly valiant manner versus Villa.

As can be seen looking at their glowing numbers above, Pereira might well feel inclined to stick with this formidable trio moving forward, with a back-to-basics approach keeping Villa very much at bay.

With the added presence of Djiga to come – who boasts five clean sheets in league action this season playing in Serbia – all of this positivity could unfortunately signal the end of this stalwart’s time at Molineux who hasn’t featured since December.

The Wolves star who needs to be sold

Indeed, Craig Dawson’s playing days at the Old Gold had already started to unravel, with the 34-year-old only making three Premier League appearances during Pereira’s tenure to date.

Only keeping one clean sheet during his 15 league games this season too, with Gary O’Neil once regularly picking the Wolves number 15 when still in charge, it does feel as if the end is in sight now for the top-flight veteran in the West Midlands.

After all, if rumours are to be believed from deadline day, the lowly top-flight outfit were willing to offload Dawson to Leicester City in exchange for former Old Gold star Conor Coady to return, before settling for the acquisition of Djiga.

That won’t exactly fill the £45k-per-week asset with much confidence that he can win back a starting spot under Pereira, therefore, with the Portuguese manager more than vindicated in his decision-making at this moment in time to try something fresh at the back, over reverting back to Dawson’s leaky displays.

Whilst Dawson will lament falling down the pecking order, new Wolves buy Djiga will hope he’s given plenty of opportunities to impress moving forward, having also bravely tallied up 5.5 ball recoveries on average this season playing for Red Star.

Once labelled as “outstanding” when at the top of his game in England by journalist Matt Law, Wolves fans will take no joy in the sad decline of their 61-game servant, but will realise all these fresh arrivals coming in means his Old Gold expiry date is near.

Moyes could unleash Bramley-Moore’s very own Cahill in £30m Everton star

Everton have enjoyed their fair share of cult heroes during the Premier League era. Duncan Ferguson initially joined on a brief loan spell from Rangers before going on to win the FA Cup with the club just a few months later.

The Scot ended his career with the Toffees having netted 72 goals for the club and is still fondly remembered by the supporters.

Duncan Ferguson

Marouane Fellaini is another cult icon. The Belgian – famed for his Sideshow Bob haircut – shone during his time at Everton, scoring 33 goals in 171 appearances for the Goodison Park outfit.

His performances on the pitch were iconic. Arguably the finest signing in the Premier League era for Everton was that of Tim Cahill, who played for the club for eight seasons.

Tim Cahill's Everton statistics

After starring for Millwall from 1998 until 2004, culminating in an FA Cup final appearance against Manchester United, Cahill joined the Toffees ahead of the 2004/05 season.

A total of 68 goals and 28 assists were registered by the Australian during his spell at the club. Famed for his ability to score stunning goals, Cahill didn’t take long to become a cult-like figure to the fans.

He helped the club finish fourth during his maiden campaign and led them to the 2009 FA Cup final, which they lost to Chelsea.

At the end of the 2011/12 season, Cahill joined the New York Red Bulls, embarking on his next adventure in MLS. In the years since, the club hasn’t quite had a player like him.

But with David Moyes returning for his second spell, might he have found his next Cahill-esque star in current centre-forward Beto?

Everton’s next cult hero under David Moyes

Beto joined the Toffees in 2023 from Udinese, costing the club around £30m. However, he scored just three Premier League goals during his maiden season at Goodison, failing to live up to this extravagant fee.

This season has been much better, especially since Moyes took over the reins. Indeed, before the recent 1-1 draw against Brentford, Beto had scored five goals in his previous four top-flight games, including a brace against Leicester City in a 4-0 victory.

Moyes has clearly brought the best out of the 27-year-old, subsequently finding a surprise cult hero from someone who struggled big time under the previous regime.

Indeed, it’s his recent form that has dragged the club away from the danger zone and showcased their credentials to potentially nab a European spot in the forthcoming seasons, just as a Cahill-inspired Moyes side did many moons ago.

Writer Ell Bretland has heaped praise on the centre-forward for his recent displays, demonstrating why we’re making such a comparison to the Aussie legend.

Beto’s composure in front of goal for his finishes against Leicester, Liverpool and Palace has been so impressive. Not controlling the ball to ensure he makes that connection to sidefoot it in takes real focus and calmness. His positional awareness in that situation is class.”

Cahill was a master of finding space and being aware of his surroundings, becoming a force to be reckoned with under Moyes and Beto is now the modern incarnate of the Goodison hero.

Now, the Everton faithful will be hoping the striker can maintain this current form to the end of the campaign, which will fill him with plenty of confidence heading into the new one at Bramley-Moore Dock.

192 Pakistan cricketers yet to be paid during domestic season

Nearly 200 of Pakistan’s domestic cricketers are still awaiting payments for participating in a domestic season that is less than a month from its conclusion. ESPNcricinfo understands that 192 players who have taken part in a number of domestic tournaments – including the National T20 Cup and the Quaid-e-Azam trophy – have not been paid their monthly retainers or even match fees, despite the season having started on August 30. Thus far, players have only been paid their daily expenses.Several players as well as sources within the PCB confirmed a delay in the distribution of the payments, which is understood to be a result of the volume of cricket this season at home; that includes a brand new tournament in the Pakistan Junior League which diverted much administrative energy towards its staging.Related

  • Ramiz Raja removed as PCB chairman

  • Pakistan's leading players agree to amended central contracts

  • PCB unveils new domestic set-up with 'stay at the top' mantra

The delay is also said to be partly because of administrative issues arising from the approval by the PCB’s Board of Governors of an increment in its domestic players’ monthly retainers and match fees. Nevertheless, for an administration headed by a former cricketer in Ramiz Raja, the excessive delay has caused unnecessary hardships for a vast majority of domestic cricketers who rely solely on cricket to make a living. This delay in payment also comes at a time in which the Pakistan economy is in deep turmoil, the value of the rupee plummeting and soaring inflation that, in November, was above 20%.In 2019, the PCB revamped the domestic structure, abolishing traditional regional and department teams and narrowing down the national pipeline into six associations representing all six provinces in the country. Before that, a significant amount of domestic cricketers were on contracts with departments they played for such as Sui Gas Northern Pipelines (SNGPL) or Habib Bank (HBL). The remaining regional players were paid by the PCB. In the new model, the entire cost of close to Rs 2 billion is borne by the PCB.Players’ domestic contacts normally span August to July but PCB only awarded the contracts mid-season in November this year. And players, ESPNcricinfo understands, only received their contracts in the first week of December after the completion of the Quaid-e-Azam trophy. Nearly 80% of players have signed the contracts and returned them and are hoping to get paid this monthAll 33 centrally contracted national players have been paid their retainers regularly, though match fees are paid in blocks after the series or tournament they participate in. Earlier this year, national cricketers did push back against the standard practice of the PCB to offer contracts and push players to sign it immediately, without consultation. A group of players did reach out to their own lawyers for advice before signing the contracts just before the tour to Netherlands. But, after extensive discussions, the PCB agreed to amend several clauses and contracts were signed.Historically, the PCB hasn’t formally negotiated with players on contracts, and players have rarely disputed any clauses, beyond ensuring satisfactory annual pay rises. But the current crop of players is increasingly aware of their commercial value and how that should be represented in a contract. Similarly, domestic contracts are usually signed by players without much discussion.Several players confirmed that the PCB has promised it will start distributing the National T20 Cup match fee this week, followed by the Quaid-e-Azam trophy. However, retainer payments will only be cleared by next month. The PCB had offered players contacts across five categories. Fifteen players will be in category A+, 35 in category A, 48 in category B, 70 in category C and 24 in category D. As per the new financial model, a player who played in the QeA Trophy receives a match fee of PKR 100,000. Those playing the white-ball tournaments – the Pakistan Cup and the National T20 – now earn PKR 60,000 per game. The non-playing members of a squad get PKR 40,000 and PKR 20,000 per match in red and white-ball cricket respectively.

'Everything was agreed' – AC Milan could have signed Liverpool star Dominik Szoboszlai as they agreed to pay RB Salzburg release clause before Liverpool switch

Former AC Milan Chief Football Officer Zvonimir Boban claims that the Italian giants nearly signed the midfielder for €20 million (£16.8m) back when he was at Red Bull Salzburg. In the end, the Hungary international left for RB Leipzig in 2021 and then Liverpool two years later. And like that, the rest is history.

“We could have also have taken Szoboszlai, everything was agreed: €20m of the clause with Salzburg,” he told Calciomercato.

THE BIGGER PICTURE

Boban may quite rightly feel aggrieved as two years after Szoboszlai left Salzburg for Leipzig, Liverpool signed him in a £60m ($79m) deal. That could have been valuable funds for Milan – who are in a division that is dwarfed financially by the Premier League.

'Simple mindset' powers Deepti Sharma's explosive knock against Australia

Australia had applied the squeeze successfully. From a high-flying 45 for 1 in four overs, they had brought India to 76 for 4 in the 12th over. India had tried to claw back, with Devika Vaidya and Richa Ghosh putting on 56, but Australia kept them largely under control. At 132 for 5 with three overs to go, India were in danger of not crossing even 150. A packed crowd at the DY Patil Sports Academy in Navi Mumbai had lost their voice. A joyous, festive atmosphere had turned grim. Which is when Deepti Sharma walked in.Related

In T20Is since January 2021, Deepti has done almost everything. She has batted at all positions from No. 3 to No. 8, she has bowled in all phases, she’s an excellent fielder, and, of course, she performed one widely debated act. Her 28 wickets in T20Is since the start of last year are the most by a bowler from a Full Member nation. Only five players from Full-Member teams average more with the bat than Deepti’s 38.88 among those with at least 300 runs in the format. On Friday, she revived India’s hopes with a thrilling finisher’s knock. She got going with a pull off Annabel Sutherland that beat deep backward square leg, and then a cut through point a couple of balls later. She also picked up two fours in the next over off Ashleigh Gardner. But Deepti meted out special treatment to Megan Schutt, carting her for four successive fours in the final over. She finished with 36 off 15 balls and helped India amass 40 in the last three overs and get to an unlikely 172 for 5.”Before the Commonwealth Games and also before this series I worked on my batting,” Deepti said after the match. “Those practice sessions worked for me. My mindset is quite simple. I generally walk in when there are very little balls left. So my aim is to always score maximum runs in those deliveries, which is what I did.”But for a Beth Mooney masterclass – aided by some poor fielding and catching from India – the total could have sufficed for India. Radha Yadav first put down Mooney in the third over before shelling Tahlia McGrath in the tenth. Dew also perhaps contributed to the misfields. Mooney and McGrath added an unbroken 100 to see Australia through to a nine-wicket win and go 1-0 up.Deepti Sharma had words of praise for debutant Anjali Sarvani and her inswinger•BCCI

Deepti admitted that India’s fielding and bowling had let them down even though they began well.”The total was good but we could have fielded better,” she said. “We bowled loose balls also. There was dew after seven-eight overs but no excuses. We tried slower ones, variations, and talked about focusing on our stock balls. We wanted to continue doing what we did over the past few months.”Over 25,000 turned up to watch the first T20I in Navi Mumbai, though the exact number was not available as the match was not ticketed. The teams play at the same venue on Sunday before moving to the Brabourne Stadium in Mumbai for the last three contests.”I thought this is the first time there was this much crowd [for a women’s cricket match in India],” she said. “It was hard to hear one another in the middle. It feels good to see them though and I hope more people turn up.”I enjoy playing under floodlights. I enjoy it because we don’t get many games under floodlights as most domestic games are in daytime.”Deepti also had words of praise for debutant Anjali Sarvani, who became the first left-arm seamer to play a women’s T20I for India. Although she didn’t pick up a wicket, Sarvani finished with respectable figures of none for 27 in her four overs.”I have played her in domestic cricket – I played the [Senior Women’s T20 Trophy] final for Bengal against Railways,” she said. “She [bowls] a good inswinger with pace. Very few bowlers beat right-handers with inswingers. It was her debut [today] but it didn’t seem like that. She was very confident to bowl in any situation and everyone backed her.”

Everton want to sign £55k-a-week Tottenham player with Spurs ready to sell

Everton are one of a host of clubs who are pushing to sign a “ridiculous” Premier League midfielder at the end of the season, according to a fresh transfer rumour.

Moyes eyeing various signings for Everton

The Blues continue to be linked with potential new signings ahead of the summer transfer window, with West Ham midfielder Tomas Soucek emerging as a rumoured priority option for David Moyes.

The Scot managed the 30-year-old during their time together at the London Stadium, with right-back Vladimir Coufal also seen as a possible option to add to Everton’s squad.

Tomas Soucek scores for West Ham

Club Brugge centre-back Joel Ordonez is an impressive young player who is also reportedly wanted by the Blues at the end of the campaign, especially if Jarrad Branthwaite moves on to pastures new. The Ecuadorian may have scored an own goal against Manchester City earlier in the year, but he is a footballer with lots of potential.

Meanwhile, Moyes is also believed to be eyeing young Championship players who he could help turn into superstars at Everton, although no specific player has been mentioned in this latest update. West Brom ace Tom Fellows is a former target, however, so he could be an option again.

Everton looking to sign "ridiculous" Spurs player

According to a new update from TheBoyHotspur, Everton are interested in signing Tottenham midfielder Yves Bissouma in the summer window.

The Blues aren’t the only club that the 28-year-old is “on the radar” of, however, with Aston Villa and Crystal Palace also getting a mention. European clubs are also tracking him and could tempt Spurs with offers as high as £24.7m, with Tottenham willing to sell Bissouma and replace him with Palace’s Adam Wharton.

The £55,000-a-week Bissouma could be a brilliant signing for Everton if they get a deal over the line this summer, with the Spurs man possessing quality and experience in the middle of the park.

At 28, he is still at a good stage in his career, so the Blues wouldn’t be signing a player who is past his best, and James Maddison has lauded his teammate, saying:

“We all know Yves’ [Bissouma] ability, he is a ridiculous player at times. He has got a skill not many have. The gaffer is a great man with good morals. He [Yves] has to keep working hard. The performance was there on Monday. It was a case of not putting our chances away. It’s important you try and put into practice what the manager wants. It’s about us trusting him.”
