Leeds could repeat Roofe masterclass with move for "wonderful" EFL star

Time is running out for Leeds United to dip into the transfer market to bolster their squad before the January transfer window slams shut at the start of February.

The Whites have yet to make a splash this month but are not in any desperate need of reinforcements as they sit at the top of the Championship table as it stands.

A relatively comfortable 3-0 win over Sheffield Wednesday at Elland Road on Sunday ensured that they moved back to the summit, after Sheffield United had overtaken them on Saturday.

Goals from Manor Solomon, Largie Ramazani, and Ao Tanaka secured all three points for the West Yorkshire outfit, whilst Illan Meslier kept a clean sheet between the sticks.

Instead of splashing the cash on a big name from the Premier League, or on an exciting player from abroad, Leeds could do a smaller piece of business and take a gamble on a domestic option.

The Whites have had success when dipping into the Football League to pick up promising young talent in the past, with Kemar Roofe one excellent example of them doing that.

Leeds United's Kemar Roofe masterclass

In the summer of 2016, Leeds swooped to sign Kemar Roofe from Oxford United in a deal that was reported to be worth around £3m after the centre-forward had caught the eye in League Two.

The English-born attacker had produced 17 goals and ten assists in 40 appearances in League Two during the 2015/16 campaign, which convinced the Whites to spend £3m on the young dynamo.

Former Leeds striker Kemar Roofe.

Roofe was not an instant hit at Elland Road, though, as the former Oxford man only found the back of the net four times in 49 appearances in all competitions in his first season with the club.

The Leeds striker needed that year to settle into life in West Yorkshire and in the Championship, having played in League Two prior to that, and stepped his game up in the following two campaigns.

As you can see in the table above, Roofe made himself a reliable goal threat for the Whites in his second and third years at the club in the Championship, scoring 25 goals.

The Jamaica international only started 52 of those matches, almost averaging a goal every other start, and helped Leeds to make the semi-finals of the play-offs in the 2018/19 campaign under Bielsa.

Roofe’s form for Leeds attracted interest from elsewhere and Belgian giants Anderlecht swooped in to secure his services for a reported fee of up to £7m in the summer of 2019.

The West Yorkshire outfit, therefore, played a masterclass by snapping the striker up for £3m, as they got two terrific seasons out of him before cashing in for a profit of £4m.

Leeds could look to repeat the blinder they played with Roofe in the current January transfer window by raiding Oxford United for another one of their young talents.

Leeds interested in Oxford gem

Football Insider recently reported that Leeds are one of a number of teams interested in signing Tyler Goodrham from Gary Rowett’s side this month.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

The outlet claimed that the Whites, Swansea City, Sunderland, and Coventry City are all vying to secure a deal for the 21-year-old starlet to bolster their respective squads.

It states that all four teams are keeping tabs on the Oxford United star and are plotting late-window moves to snap up the attacking midfielder ahead of the second half of the season.

This means that Leeds may have to act fast if they want to secure his services this month because there is plenty of interest from other sides in the division.

Football Insider’s report did not, though, reveal how much money it would take to convince Oxford to part ways with their young starlet midway through the season.

Leeds must, now, make a move to win the race for Goodrham because the talented youngster could come in as a terrific long-term addition to Daniel Farke’s squad.

Why Leeds should sign Tyler Goodrham

Instead of signing a big name, like Buendia – for example, who can come in and be expected to make an immediate impact in the second half of the season, the Whites could sign the Oxford gem with a view to him being a key player for the German boss in the future.

At the age of 21, the Irish dynamo would come in as a young talent with plenty of time left ahead of him to develop and improve over the years to come.

He could spend the second half of this season as a squad player for Leeds and learn from the likes of Brenden Aaronson, Wilfried Gnonto, and Largie Ramazani, among others, to improve and hone his skills, as a winger or as an attacking midfielder.

The versatile forward, who can play centrally or out wide, has produced three goals and three assists in 25 appearances in the Championship so far this term, which means that he has shown promise in the final third without being a consistent threat.

Goodrham, who was hailed as a “wonderful” player by ex-boss Des Buckingham, made his breakthrough as a regular starter in League One last season and helped his side earn promotion up to the second tier.

As you can see in the table above, the young attacker contributed with 12 direct goal contributions in just 23 starts, which speaks to his potential to make a big impact in the final third when he is at his best.

Like they did with Roofe, Leeds may have to be patient with Goodrham and accept that he is unlikely to be a key star right away, given his decent, but unspectacular, return this season, but with the hope that he will follow in Roofe’s footsteps and grow into a valuable asset for the club in the future.

Arsenal ready to table £59 million offer for "crazy" Serie A superstar

Arsenal are ready to put no less than £59 million on the table to sign a “crazy” Serie A superstar who has scored 14 goals this season, according to a new report.

Arsenal forced into market after more forward injuries

Arsenal have had a difficult few weeks. After losing the first-leg of their EFL Cup semifinal clash with Newcastle United, Mikel Arteta’s side were then dumped out of the FA Cup by struggling Manchester United on penalties.

A win over North London rivals Tottenham followed, but at the weekend, the Gunners again came unstuck, drawing 2-2 with Aston Villa in the Premier League.

To add insult to injury, it was confirmed last week that striker Gabriel Jesus, who had been in a rich vein of form with six goals in his last five games, sustained an anterior cruciate ligament injury in the defeat to United. The Brazilian is set to undergo surgery for the injury, and is now expected to miss the rest of the season.

In wake of Jesus’ season-ending injury, Arteta confirmed that the Gunners will be looking to sign a new forward this month.

“My answer doesn’t change,” Arteta said last week when asked about signing a new forward. “We are actively looking in the market to improve the squad and that has been since day one.

“We would be naive not to do that because it is an opportunity, always, to evolve the team and improve the squad, and especially with the circumstances that we have. So yes, we are looking and we are trying, and let’s see what we are able to do.”

He's better than Sesko: Arsenal exploring move for "monster" striker

Arsenal are in desperate need of signing a centre-forward in the January transfer window.

1 ByMatt Dawson Jan 20, 2025 Arsenal ready to bid for Inter star

One striker who is reportedly interesting Arsenal is Inter Milan and France star Marcus Thuram. The 27-year-old has 14 goals and six assists in 26 games for Inter this season, and according to TV Play, via Sports Witness, Arsenal are now prepared to table as much as £59 million for him.

The publication says Thuram is Arteta’s “big dream” but that Inter won’t be willing to part ways with him in January, meaning the Spaniard will have to wait until the summer to land his man.

Thuram, who joined Inter in the summer of 2023 from Borussia Monchengladbach, has previously been described as “crazy” by his former Gladbach teammate Denis Zakaria.

“He is a great guy, a little crazy maybe, but what he brings to the pitch is phenomenal,” said the Swiss midfielder.

Wolfsburg sporting director Marcel Schäfer has also called him a “world class striker,” while Thuram’s ex-Gladbach boss Daniel Farke once described him as “an exceptional player of the highest international class”.

Big, strong, fast and a clinical finisher, Thuram would certainly be a fine acquisition for any club, let alone Arsenal, who are in dire need of a new striker, and not just because of Jesus’ injury. Kai Havertz has yet to prove he has what he takes to lead the line and score regular goals for the Gunners. Thuram has been doing exactly that for Inter.

Forget Kyogo: Celtic star showed why his value has soared by 100% already

Not even the bitterly cold conditions away at Dingwall can stop this red-hot Celtic side right now, with the Scottish champions powering to a 4-1 win over Ross County to extend their mammoth lead at the Premiership summit.

January is still in its infancy, yet Brendan Rodgers’ men already look to have two hands on the title, with Saturday’s triumph ensuring the Hoops now rest 18 points above bitter rivals Rangers, following the Ibrox side’s draw away to Dundee in midweek.

Celtic managerBrendanRodgerscelebrates after winning the League Cup

It must be said, however, that it wasn’t quite plain-sailing for the Parkhead outfit against Don Cowie’s side, with Jordan White having cancelled out Kyogo Furuhashi’s opener from the spot, following a clumsy challenge from Alistair Johnston.

To their credit, as they always do, the league leaders rallied to put the game to bed late on, with Kyogo grabbing his second of the game on the 81st-minute mark, prior to Arne Engels and Luke McCowan rubbing further salt into home wounds in stoppage time.

Evidently far from a perfect performance, yet Rodgers – who was without the likes of Nicolas Kuhn and Daizen Maeda – will no doubt have been impressed by at least a handful of his star men, including Kyogo.

Kyogo's game in numbers vs Ross County

It would be foolish not to focus in on Celtic’s two-goal hero, with the Japanese marksman looking razor-sharp in something of a new role, having operated off the focal point of Adam Idah in attack.

Seemingly given the licence to drift and drop deep to get involved in the play, the 29-year-old – who has only averaged 13.7 touches per game in the league this season – chalked up 53 touches this time around, as per Sofascore, with Rodgers finding a novel solution to fill the void of Kuhn and Maeda.

Having gone close to getting off the mark initially, only to see his close-range effort denied by the impressive Jordan Amissah, the former Vissel Kobe man then took his chance just before the break, after pouncing on Johnston’s whipped cross in expert fashion.

Celtic’s number eight was again the beneficiary of a perfect delivery late on after meeting Engels’ cross to header home, with that taking his total tally to 85 goals in 162 games for the club to date.

While the transfer rumour mill continues to swirl – amid that bizarre talk of a move to Atlanta United – hopefully, Kyogo will be staying put beyond the February deadline.

Meanwhile, the in-demand striker wasn’t alone in catching the eye on Saturday afternoon, with club-record signing, Engels, also pulling the strings in the centre of the park.

Engels showed why his value has soared

Tasked with replacing Matt O’Riley upon his £11m arrival from Club Brugge, the Belgian playmaker has certainly risen to the challenge in recent months, with his performance away at Dingwall having been particularly influential.

Market Movers

Football FanCast's Market Movers series explores the changing landscape of the modern transfer market. How much is your club's star player or biggest flop worth today?

Indeed, as stated above, the 21-year-old produced a delightful, reverse pass to pick out Kyogo to make it 2-1, while then showing real character to convert from the penalty spot at the second attempt, after initially being denied by the charging Amissah.

Engels – who now has six goals to his name in a Celtic shirt – was also a real creative outlet throughout the 90 minutes after registering five key passes in total from his 104 touches, having also enjoyed a solid 86% pass accuracy rate.

With Kyogo vacating the space out wide, the youngster also regularly drifted into that right channel in order to make his mark, having attempted 11 crosses in total. It was, in truth, an all-action display from the man in the middle.

It is for no reason then that Engels seemingly boasts a soaring market value, with CIES Football Observatory deeming him to be worth as much as €26m (£22m), thus marking a rise of 100% in relation to his initial £11m fee.

Not that Rodgers and co will be looking to cash in so soon into his stay in Glasgow, yet that remarkable rise indicates that perhaps Celtic have actually struck a bargain, even after forking out so heavily.

Wolves hold talks to sign "dominant" midfielder who’s been compared to Rice

Whilst still chasing the arrival of central defender Kevin Danso, Wolverhampton Wanderers have reportedly opened talks to sign a 23-year-old midfielder who’s been compared to Declan Rice.

Wolves transfer news

Much of Wolves’ transfer window has been centred around a search for reinforcements within both their backline and midfield. Having already signed Emmanuel Agbadou, the Midlands club have since reportedly agreed personal terms with RC Lens star Danso and must thrash out a deal to secure his arrival and match the French club’s reported £25m valuation.

Meanwhile, on the midfield front, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain has threatened to steal the headlines. The former Liverpool and Arsenal man is reportedly keen on a move back to the Premier League and has attracted the interest of both Wolves and Leicester City as well as Championship leaders Leeds United as a result.

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain for Besiktas.

The Premier League winner would certainly add experience to Vitor Pereira’s midfield in what is a crucial trait for any side looking to escape the dropzone. Whether those in the Midlands push on and secure his return to English football remains to be seen though, especially with another option emerging.

According to talkSPORT’s Alex Crook, Wolves have now opened talks to sign Volodymyr Brazhko from Dynamo Kyiv before Monday’s deadline. The 23-year-old defensive midfielder could instantly replace Mario Lemina amid continuous rumours that he could be on the move to Saudi Arabia this month.

Wolves are certainly among the clubs to watch in the coming days, with talks seemingly open for Brazhko and personal terms reportedly agreed with Danso. In the final week of the window, those in the Midlands could hand Pereira the key to unlocking Premier League survival.

Currently one point adrift of safety too, it’s fair to say that Wolves could do with all the help they can get.

"Rice-type" Brazhko could partner Joao Gomes

Whilst Andre and Joao Gomes have impressed at times when asked to sit in the double pivot of Pereira’s side, the arrival of Brazkho could add further attacking intent from the deep role. Analyst Ben Mattinson was quick to praise the midfielder last summer, dubbing him a “(Declan) Rice-type” midfielder and describing his ball-winning ability as “dominant”.

The arrival of the Ukraine midfielder would also provide Pereira with the chance to change to a three-man midfield with a back four behind them if Danso also arrives in the coming days.

Such a system change could yet become the catalyst behind turning Wolves’ season around in the coming months, courtesy of the January transfer window.

Following a crushing 3-0 defeat at the hands of Arsenal in the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final tie, doubts surrounding Ancelotti’s long-term future at the Santiago Bernabeu are growing louder. Despite his current deal running until 2026, poor form in Europe and inconsistency in La Liga are beginning to weigh heavily. With just seven league fixtures remaining, Madrid sit four points behind fierce rivals Barcelona, adding fuel to speculation that a managerial change may come in the summer if their latest trophy pursuit ends up proving fruitless.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

According to Real Madrid have been closely monitoring Klopp’s availability and are contemplating making an official move for the German tactician. Klopp stepped down from his managerial role at Liverpool last summer and took a brief hiatus before accepting a new off-pitch position as Red Bull’s Global Head of Football. While he had initially seemed set on transitioning to a less intense role within football’s executive sphere, recent developments in Madrid may tempt him back into the dugout. Real insiders are said to believe that his charisma, tactical innovation, and big-game mentality could be precisely what the club needs in a period of uncertainty.

    DID YOU KNOW?

For months, Xabi Alonso has been considered the frontrunner to succeed Ancelotti. The Bayer Leverkusen boss and former Spain and Madrid midfielder enjoys a strong reputation in his homeland, thanks to his composed leadership and modern approach to attacking football. Having already proven his mettle in the Bundesliga, Alonso’s tactical know-how and familiarity with the club make him a highly attractive option. However, recent inconsistencies in his Leverkusen side’s performances have sparked doubts among Madrid officials. There is growing concern that, despite his potential, Alonso might not offer the immediate impact or commanding presence needed to steer the team through turbulent waters and back to the top.

While Klopp remains comfortably embedded in his role with the Red Bull group, Madrid’s interest might present a dilemma he finds hard to ignore. With a sabbatical already under his belt and a legacy secured in England, the chance to take over at one of football’s most storied clubs could reignite his appetite for front-line management.

Marco Jansen: 'We don't take anything for granted because Mother Cricket will kick you in the backside'

South Africa’s towering left-arm quick talks about his upbringing and the hard yards to get to the top

Koos Jansen spotted the cricketing talent of his twin sons, Marco and Duan, when they were nine-years-old and ran with it. Much like Richard Williams, who masterminded Venus and Serena’s rise to being among the best players tennis has ever seen, Koos made it his mission to train and talk to his kids about the sport he believed they would excel in, becoming cricket’s equivalent of King Richard. Let’s call him King Koos.Like Williams, and in keeping with a few other famous cricketing dads, Koos Jansen wasn’t always gentle in his methods.”There have been some very tough times when my dad was very tough on us,” Marco Jansen, South Africa’s 22-year old tearaway, said. “There was no sugarcoating. Back then, he spoke to us in the same way he is speaking to us now. Nothing has changed. That enabled us to grow and mature a bit quicker than all the other kids when we were a bit young.Related

“Since we were growing up, he is the one that has been – not the tough guy – but harder on us, especially when it comes to sport.” Koos demanded the best from his boys in other spheres too, such as academics. “But we weren’t that great,” Jansen said.By Jansen’s own admission, and despite some eye-watering numbers (164 and 80 respectively) in a T20 game for example, the pair were not stand-out youth players either. “My high school career didn’t go well. I wasn’t the top schoolboy cricketer,” Jansen said.Neither of he nor Duan played in an Under-19 World Cup and both made their names as net bowlers. In a professional era where the pathways are clearly laid out, and usually followed, theirs is the stuff of fairytales, which is why when Jansen made his Test debut, with only 18 first-class appearances to his name (and of those only half in South Africa’s top-tier of domestic cricket), he could barely believe his good fortune. “If you had told me you will make your debut against India in South Africa, I would have laughed and said, no, there’s no chance,” he said. There was an element of his selection which was about him being in the right place at the right time. South Africa were without Anrich Nortje for that India series and would have picked Duanne Olivier for the Boxing Day Test but he had not fully recovered from Covid-19 and was nursing a hamstring niggle. When Jansen’s name appeared on the team-sheet, it was a surprise and he found himself under scrutiny immediately. He was nervous and his first spell was wayward but he returned later in the match and showed off an ability to swing the ball at pace, to exploit any bounce and to challenge even the best. In India’s second innings, Jansen dismissed Mayank Agarwal, Virat Kohli, Ajinkya Rahane and Mohammed Siraj to finish his debut match with five wickets. He has since added KL Rahul – three times – Cheteshwar Pujara and most recently Joe Root to his list of wickets and continues to ask serious questions of marquee players. In Root’s case, Jansen struck him on the pad with a delivery that shaped in and the amount of movement on offer at Lord’s surprised Jansen himself. “I didn’t expect the ball to swing that much,” Jansen said. “The plan was to stick around that off stump or fourth stump area and let the ball pass through there. If it nips back then it brings all dismissals into play and if it just straightens, you can nick him off. When you get the big names out, it’s always a good feeling.”Duan (left) and Marco Jansen with Virat Kohli in the nets on India’s 2018 tour•Koos Jansen

The best, in fact. Though Jansen has an IPL deal and was among the players who opted out of the series against Bangladesh earlier in the year, he spoke of Test cricket as the highlight of becoming an international. “I enjoy the red-ball format. It’s the format where what you put in, you get out. If you bowl well, you will get wickets. If you bat well, you will score runs,” he said. “That’s what I have enjoyed the most. And just being around the guys, they make it [nice] to play the game.”As the youngest in the group, Jansen is soaking up the knowledge from players who are much more experienced than him, much like he did with his dad.”Like today, we had a long practice session, so then you chat to them and you ask all the nitty gritty stuff,” he said of South Africa’s preparations for the second Test at Old Trafford. “They help you think out of the box. And there’s the coaches as well. They bring a different perspective. There’s a lot of angles or perspectives you have at your disposal to try and figure out what you can do to give yourself the best chance to perform.”There’s also some advice about what not to do. Naturally, because of Jansen’s frame – he stands at 2.06 metres tall – there are concerns about overbowling him and injuries. He has already overcome what was turning into a stress fracture of the lower back. “I’ve had problems when I was 18 or 19 – a semi-stress fracture in the lower back. I have grown a lot quicker for my body to adjust to my muscles and all those kinds of stuff.”To try to prevent future issues, he has to work specifically on his lower body and abdominal area. “My core has to be strong. My glutes, my lower body have to be very strong because that’s where most of my loads go. Because I twist a lot, if my core muscles are quite strong, then I have a base to work from.”That’s how Jansen’s entire career has been. He has the foundations laid by his family (and he wants you to know that Koos was also always there for “a bit of love and a bit of softness”) and he built on those by almost immediately joining the best cricketers in the country and turning out regularly for them. And it’s not just any international team. After the last year South Africa have had in Tests, and their performance at Lord’s, there’s already talk this pace pack could become one of the best going around. Asked if he thought the South Africa attack was as good as it could be, Jansen checked himself. “I wouldn’t say we are unbeatable. We put in the hard yards and we are still putting in the hard yards,” he said. “We don’t take anything for granted because we know when we do that, Mother Cricket is going to kick you on the backside.”Or make that, Papa (King) Koos.

Wolves could land dream Lemina replacement in PL “Swiss army knife”

If there is one thing Wolverhampton Wanderers need for their ongoing relegation battle, it is a sense of commitment to their fight for survival within their squad. That seems like something Vitor Pereira has looked to maintain during his short time at the club so far, and it was something former boss Gary O’Neil instilled.

In his first six games across all competitions, the Old Gold boss has overseen three wins, one draw and two losses. They were back-to-back defeats in the Premier League against Nottingham Forest and Newcastle United. It has been a solid start to his tenure at Molineux.

Agbadou

Almost all of the squad seems to be on board and ready to fight for survival. However, former club captain Mario Lemina seems destined to leave the West Midlands.

Lemina’s 2024/25 season

It has been a very strange season for Gabon international midfielder Lemina. He began the campaign as a key player for the Old Gold and has played 19 times across all competitions. At the beginning of the season, he was also club captain, although was stripped of that title.

During mid-December, O’Neil confirmed that the captaincy had been passed from Lemina to experienced full-back Nelson Semedo.

That came after a fight with West Ham United captain Jarrod Bowen after their game at the London Stadium. O’Neil confirmed that “sparked the conversation” for a change in the captaincy.

Now, the West Midlands outfit might lose the midfielder altogether, in a situation that has escalated fairly quickly. After their 3-0 defeat away to Newcastle United, which Lemina was not part of, Pereira confirmed he “wants to leave” Molineux this month.

The new man in the hot seat at Wolves explained “with this energy and this mentality, I don’t need him”. It seems certain that the former captain will leave Molineux just one month after being relieved of his duties as skipper.

Wolves midfielder Mario Lemina.

Indeed, the Old Gold may well have their replacement in mind already and could make a move before the end of the January transfer window.

Wolves’ dream Lemina replacement

The player in question here is Chelsea youngster Renato Veiga, with reports earlier in the window suggesting that Wolves had enquired about a potential loan move, which was rebuffed by the Blues. Perhaps, however, going in for another approach would be a wise choice for the Old Gold.

The 21-year-old has been impressive for Enzo Maresca’s side so far this term, having made 18 appearances across all competitions for the Blues.

He has scored twice and grabbed one assist, registering a goal and assist against Gent in the Conference League.

He has clearly made a lasting impression on Blues fans so far, with Alex Goldberg full of praise for the Portuguese star. He explained that “anything he touches turns to gold”, a metaphor of course, but still something that shows just how well he has played.

One of the biggest advantages of signing Veiga would be the fact Wolves have something of a utility man in their squad. Described as a “Swiss army knife” by football talent scout Jacek Kulig, he can play in multiple positions in defence and midfield.

Renato Veiga for Chelsea.

Indeed, this certainly rings true when looking at the positions he played for former club Basel, and, of course, Chelsea. The Portuguese starlet has been trusted across the defence, at full-back and centre-back, and in the midfield.

This must be an appealing factor for Wolves, and one reason why Pereira might want to sign his countryman. Not only would they be bringing in a Lemina replacement in midfield, but also someone who can play at left centre-back in his back three system.

This certainly seems like the perfect deal for Wolves. It might be tough to convince Chelsea to part ways with their versatile star, but if it is possible, then it could be a fantastic piece of business for the Old Gold.

Sheffield Wednesday a frontrunner for "really bright" 51-cap international

Sheffield Wednesday are now among the frontrunners to sign a midfielder who is attracting a lot of interest from several Championship clubs, according to a report.

Wednesday could be busy before February 3rd

Wednesday have been quiet in the transfer window up to this point, but after securing a new loan agreement for Shea Charles last week, they are now keen to make a few more additions to their squad before the February 3rd deadline.

The Owls are looking to reinforce their defence, with Dominic Iorfa set to be out for a few more weeks, and they made a loan bid for Ipswich Town’s Harry Clarke, but look to have missed out to rivals Sheffield United. Having impressed Danny Rohl, Vissel Kobe left-back Ryo Hatsuse is also of interest, and all parties are keen on getting a deal over the line, with his contract set to expire on January 31st.

Earlier this week, it was reported that Wednesday have now joined the race for Vancouver Whitecaps midfielder Stuart Armstrong, and there has been a new update on their transfer pursuit.

A number of second-tier sides are said to be interested in the midfielder, but the two aforementioned clubs are the frontrunners, given that they are the most keen to get a deal done.

Rohl was eager to sign the former Southampton man back in the summer, having spent time working with him at St. Mary’s, and he has now rekindled his interest.

The 32-year-old played a key role in helping the Saints’ achieve promotion from the Championship last season, before moving to the MLS, but it now appears as though he may have an opportunity to secure a swift return to England.

Armstrong could be a fantastic signing for the Owls

The £39k-per-week midfielder has been impressive for a number of years now, across spells in England and the Scottish Premiership, drawing praise from former manager Brendan Rodgers during his time with Celtic.

“He’s also got a good range of pass, can shoot and is good on set-pieces. So he’ s really developing very well and, to put on top of that, he’s a really bright boy.”

At Parkhead, the Inverness-born maestro played a part in winning four Scottish Premiership titles, and he is also vastly experienced at international level, chalking up 51 caps for Scotland.

As such, Armstrong could be a fantastic addition to Rohl’s squad, but there are question marks over whether he should be a priority target before the deadline.

Having re-signed Charles on loan last week, Wednesday are well-stocked in the middle of the park, while they are a little light on options in defence, given that Iorfa is on the treatment table and they’ve missed out on Clarke. As such, Rohl should prioritise the signing of a defender before pursuing a move for Armstrong.

Arteta’s next Odegaard: £50m star ready to join Arsenal on Deadline Day

Deadline Day is upon us and Arsenal are yet to conclude any business. Should we be surprised? Probably not.

Arsenal don’t tend to spend money unless they have a particular talent in mind and despite the flurry of deals across the Premier League over the last month, the winter window is a particularly tricky one to recruit in.

In January’s gone by, the Gunners have added marquee signings such as Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Mesut Ozil, two of the finest players we’ve seen in home colours at the Emirates Stadium. That said, will anyone join them in becoming one of the biggest post-Highbury deals we’ve seen?

Ollie Watkins is one target’s name who has come to the forefront of fans’ minds over the last five days but any move now seems unlikely given Jhon Duran has moved to Saudi.

So, is there anyone else in the pipeline?

Arsenal's late window business

With Watkins now likely off the table attention appears to have turned itself to Dusan Vlahovic according to reports.

The Juventus frontman could cost in the region of £54m if the Serie A side decide to let him leave Turin.

However, he’s not the only player on the club’s radar. Indeed, according to Fabrizio Romano, the Gunners and Manchester United are in contact with Bayern Munich regarding Mathys Tel.

The Frenchman – who can play as a lone striker or on the wing – rejected a £50m move to Tottenham over the weekend and it did look as though he might stay in Germany as a result.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

However, he could still be on the move with further reports from the Mirror even suggesting that he is ‘ready to join’ either Arsenal or United before the window closes.

Bayern Munich forward Mathys Tel

A loan move cannot be ruled out either with reports earlier in the window indicating the forward was willing to initially leave Munich on a temporary basis.

What Mathys Tel would offer Arsenal

Should Tel move to Arsenal on a loan move this January then it could be a wonderful repeat of the initial deal that saw current captain Martin Odegaard head to north London.

Back in late January of 2021, Arteta and Co needed an extra sprinkle of creativity in the team and they did so by bringing the Norwegian to the capital.

Judging by Arteta’s comments four years ago, a similar move could be replicated here. Like Odegaard was when he joined, Tel is young, exciting, and on the periphery of one of Europe’s major clubs. To put it simply, he desperately needs game time to improve.

Well, the 19-year-old would be pretty perfect for Arsenal given the boxes they need to tick before the window shuts.

With Gabriel Jesus injured, they need a centre forward and with Bukayo Saka also on the treatment table, they need a winger. Fortunately, Tel can do both.

Described as “one of the best young strikers in Europe” by journalist David Reed, there’s clearly a great degree of excitement around the teenager and here’s why.

Despite a lack of game time, the wonderkid ranks incredibly highly for a number of key metrics. Having scored ten goals in 40 games last term, he’s not the most prolific yet but that’s still an incredibly impressive number for someone still learning their trade.

Crucially, he ranks highly for goal-creating actions and what should also excite Arteta and the supporters is how highly he ranks for successful take-ons.

Mathys Tel

The Gunners have missed players with a daring ability to beat their marker and in Tel they’d find that player. A permanent move would be ideal but even if it’s only on loan, an extra body certainly wouldn’t go amiss in the final months of the new campaign.
