£250m stars out, Tierney doesn’t start: Arsenal predicted lineup vs Monaco

Things might not be going their way in the Premier League at present, but Arsenal have a brilliant opportunity to rebuild some positive momentum in Europe tonight.

Mikel Arteta’s side play hosts to the high-flying AS Monaco, who find themselves third in Ligue 1 and 11th in the Champions League, although a win at the Emirates would send them level on points with second-placed Bayer Leverkusen.

So, while the home fans might be expecting a convincing win from the Gunners, they could be in for a harder-fought affair than they’re expecting, especially with the number of injury concerns the North Londoners have at present.

That said, with how things panned out last time the two sides met in Europe’s premier competition, there could be a desire for revenge…

Arsenal's last Champions League game against Monaco

So, the last time Arsenal played Monaco was in the 2023 Emirates Cup, but the last competitive game between the two teams was the second leg of a Champions League quarter-final in March 2015.

The Gunners went into the game 3-1 down on aggregate thanks to a horror show of a first leg that saw a young Anthony Martial pick up an assist in the first half and Bernardo Silva do the same in the second 45.

The North Londoners knew they had to either win 3-0 or score enough goals to come out ahead on the away goals rule.

Unfortunately, neither of those things happened, as a 36th-minute strike from Olivier Giroud and another from Aaron Ramsey in the 79th minute saw Arsène Wenger’s side exit the competition courtesy of away goals.

So, Arteta will be hoping he fares slightly better against the French side later tonight.

Arsenal team news

Unfortunately for Arsenal fans, the only team news is bad news at the moment.

Seven players missed the open training session yesterday afternoon, and then in his press conference afterwards, Arteta confirmed that they were all doubts for tonight’s clash.

As if it were some cosmic joke, six of the seven who could miss out are defenders and have, at some point or another, played at full-back this season.

We know Takehiro Tomiyasu and Ben White are out and will likely remain so for some time, and it’s now been confirmed that Riccardo Calafiori has a groin issue and Gabriel Magalhaes is suffering from a muscle problem.

Lastly, Jurrien Timber, Oleksandr Zinchenko and Thomas Partey were part of the seven that missed training, so could well also be ruled out for the game.

So, with the club seemingly in the midst of a defensive injury crisis, it looks like Arteta could make five changes to the lineup that drew with Fulham on Sunday.

There is always a chance that the Spaniard could potentially turn to the club’s forgotten man, Kieran Tierney, but history tells us that’s just not going to happen.

Instead, fans could see the incredibly exciting Myles Lewis-Skelly make his full Champions League debut on the left, while fellow academy gem Josh Nichols, who impressed on pre-season, could be called in as emergency cover at right-back should Timber not be fit enough to start.

Given the inexperience of the full-backs, it seems almost certain that Jakub Kiwior and William Saliba will keep their places at centre-back, while Martin Odegaard and Declan Rice could keep their places in the team, with Mikel Merino stepping in for Jorginho.

Up top could see Raheem Sterling given a rare start ahead of Leandro Trossard and Gabriel Martinelli, who were poor at Craven Cottage, while Bukayo Saka will likely keep his place off the right, and Gabriel Jesus could get a start in the competition he produced seven goal involvements in last year.

Arsenal predicted lineup in full: Raya, Nichols, Saliba, Kiwior, Lewis-Skelly, Rice, Merino, Odegaard, Saka, Sterling, Jesus.

Sky Sports: Newcastle eye move to sign £17m+ forward who may replace Wilson

Newcastle United are now eyeing a 2025 move to potentially replace Callum Wilson with a teenage talent who is considered to be a star in the making, according to a fresh report.

Newcastle have striker concerns

Eddie Howe’s striker options could look very different come the start of the next Premier League season as speculation continues to swirl about who leads the line on Tyneside.

Alexander Isak continues to excel at St James’ Park, with the Swede having managed to find the net seven times so far this season as well as grabbing four assists, contributing to over 50% of Newcastle’s 23 Premier League goals.

Alexander Isak celebrates vs Liverpool

His form is not going unnoticed, and Arsenal are one of the sides that reportedly remain interested in signing the 25-year-old forward as soon as next summer, with Isak yet to follow Anthony Gordon in penning fresh terms on Tyneside.

Though his current deal does not expire until 2028 and Newcastle will be desperate not to lose their talismanic forward, there will be a fear that a failure to qualify for European football could see Isak push for a move away.

It is a different story for Wilson, who has suffered with injuries since joining the Magpies and has been restricted to just four appearances this season, not finding the net in any of them.

Now 32-years-old, the forward is out of contract with Newcastle at the end of the season and there is an expectation that he will not be offered fresh terms to extend his stay at St James’ Park, leaving Howe and Paul Mitchell looking for at least one new striker in the summer transfer window.

They may now have found their replacement for the veteran, though.

Newcastle eyeing £17m+ striker signing

That is according to Sky Sports reporter Florian Plettenberg, who claims that the Magpies are one of three Premier League teams now “keeping an eye on” Greek teenage talent Stefanos Tzimas.

Much of Newcastle’s transfer policy in recent seasons has been to buy young talent and nurture them into stars, something that they are keen to continue heading forwards, and the teenager certainly fits the bill.

Newcastle eye January move for once-£60m striker who is now worth way less

Howe may consider strengthening his attacking options this winter after the injury to Callum Wilson.

1 ByDominic Lund Dec 16, 2024

Currently on loan with German side FC Nürnberg, he has found the net seven times in 13 Bundesliga 2 outings and has been hailed a “monster in the making” by Football Talent Scout Jacek Kulig.

The report reveals that Nürnberg plan to take up their option to buy Tzimas in the summer, believed to be for a fee of €18m, before immediately selling him on. Their aim is to make a profit of €3m-€5m, meaning that Tzimas will be available for between €21m and €23m (£17m and £19m) next summer.

Aston Villa and Chelsea are both also keeping tabs on his situation, it is added, but with both sides already well stocked in the striker department Newcastle may well be able to offer the advantage of first-team football. At just £17m, he could prove a bargain for Howe and co.

'A force of nature' – How county cricket remembers Andrew Symonds and that T20 knock

Australian had a huge impact on the game in England, and the teams he played with there

Valkerie Baynes15-May-2022As Kent and Surrey players lined up on the boundary in front of the Beckenham pavilion to observe a minute’s silence to honour Andrew Symonds, they represented two clubs which had been touched by his “magic” more than most.It was on this suburban out-ground in South London that Matt Walker, the Kent head coach, can remember Symonds whacking a Hampshire attack featuring the likes of Wasim Akram and Alan Mullally into the adjoining training facilities of the Crystal Palace football club. Indeed his unbeaten 96 off 37 balls against Hampshire in the first season of the Twenty20 Cup in 2003 remains a pivotal innings in Symonds’ career.Another innings Walker shared with Symonds was arguably more of a trailblazing one, even if the true significance of it was somewhat lost at the time in an air of puzzlement about the feat and the format itself, which was still very much in its infancy. A good distance from Beckenham, deep into Kent at Maidstone, was where Symonds struck his world-record 34-ball hundred in 37 minutes against Middlesex the following season. It was the fastest T20 hundred until Chris Gayle reached the mark off 30 balls in 2013. Symonds went on to reach 112 off 43 deliveries as Kent won the rain-affected match by seven wickets with 29 balls to spare.”It was almost surreal, because it was so early on in T20,” Walker says. “No one really then knew how to play the game. It sounds really strange but those first couple of years it was so far removed from anything we’d done as cricketers. This new form of cricket came in which I think everyone was scratching their heads about how they go, some people would try the slog first, it didn’t really work out, and the game sort of passed us by and no one really quite got it. But he got it.”Surrey and Kent players observe a minute’s silence for Andrew Symonds•Kent CCCSymonds clubbed 18 fours and three sixes in that knock, Walker came in a No. 4 with his powerfully built team-mate all guns blazing and ended unbeaten on 12.”Looking back I can’t remember a shot he played because it was so long ago, but what I do remember is there was such shellshock around the ground, especially from the Middlesex players, they couldn’t quite believe what was going on,” he says. “It was almost a sense of this is like nothing we’ve ever seen before.”Now it happens quite a bit, doesn’t it? We see it most weeks in the IPL or in our Blast and it’s quite commonplace, but bearing in mind when that was, I don’t think anyone could quite believe what they’re seeing.”It just felt like he was playing in the back garden with his kids, how easy it was, with how much power he gained, how hard he hit the ball. We just were left a bit sort of bewildered by it really. But Symo being Symo sort of walked off, bat under his arm and, ‘whatever, no big deal’.”It was Symonds’ ability to combine a larger-than-life physical presence with a down-to-earth, humble, honest persona which swept people along with him – made them feel special – that Walker remembers most from the Australian’s time with Kent from 1999 to 2004.”He was a force of nature and an incredibly talented athlete that probably could have played any sport he wanted to if he chose, and he was magic, he really was absolutely magic,” Walker says. “It was the presence he had everywhere he went… you felt unbeatable with that sort of bloke in your presence.”He made it a great place to be for those years and that period was one of the happiest I think I’ve been playing cricket, with that group of players and him in it.”Andrew Symonds on his way to 112 for Kent against Middlesex•Getty ImagesDuring his time with the county, Symonds made 49 first-class appearances, scoring 12 centuries and amassing 3,526 runs at an average of 45.20. He also contributed 65 red-ball wickets with his right-arm seam and off-spin.Symonds also made 62 List A appearances for Kent and scored 1,690 one-day runs at an average of 30.17. His highest one-day total of 146 came against Lancashire at Tunbridge Wells in 2004 and he took 69 wickets at 21.53, including two five-wicket hauls. In 2020, he was voted Kent Spitfires’ Greatest Overseas Player by the club’s members and supporters.Speaking about Symonds’ death, just hours after the news broke late on Saturday night UK time, Walker is almost overcome with emotion initially before the memories flow and he returns to his usually verbose self.”He’ll be hugely missed,” he says. “I know that for a fact. And I can say that when he was with us at Kent, it was an amazing period of time of cricket. We won a lot of games. We were one of the best sides in the country. We won a couple of things and he was a massive part of that and my thoughts are so much with the family and especially the Australian group of players that have had such a horrible time of it.”Related

Symonds’ death in a single-car crash in north Queensland at the age of 46 follows the deaths of Shane Warne and Rod Marsh in March. Their loss has been felt around the sporting world, and other corners of English county cricket who were moved deeply by Australian cricket’s latest loss, including Surrey, whose players stood shoulder to shoulder with Kent’s under Sunday’s leaden skies which ultimately contrived to end their Championship contest in a washed-out draw.Symonds joined Surrey for the Friends Provident T20 campaign of 2010 and Gareth Batty, then Symonds’ team-mate now Surrey’s head coach, vividly remembers the Australian’s classy response to a then 19-year-old Jason Roy scoring his maiden T20 hundred to propel their side to victory against Kent at Beckenham that season.”Andy Symonds is someone that we knew personally, we had him for a period of time at Surrey nearer the end of his career and he was very big around the group,” Batty says. “I remember Jason getting his first hundred in a T20 game and he was the one, fresh into the group, that said, ‘hang on a minute, we’ve got a young fella here, we hang around for 20 minutes and we bask in his glory with him.'”I certainly think Jason will remember that to this day. I certainly remember it and I still try and aspire to be as good a team man as he certainly was throughout his life. He’ll be sadly missed.”Symonds also played stints with Gloucestershire, where he scored 254 not out against Glamorgan in 1995, including a then first-class record of 16 sixes, and at Lancashire in 2005.”He was a brilliant, three-dimensional player but he was also very driven and asked a lot of his team-mates,” Mark Chilton, Lancashire’s director of cricket.”We caught him at a time in his career when he was flying and he seemed to affect every game in which he played. He was a cricketer who imposed himself on the opposition in a competitive way but without crossing the line. You felt his presence and he had a massive impact on what we were trying to create.”

Nottinghamshire made impressive work of chasing down what might have been a tricky fourth-innings target to complete a ten-wicket victory over neighbours Derbyshire in the LV= Insurance County Championship.Haseeb Hameed made 93 and Ben Slater 64, the openers sharing an unbroken partnership of 167 to see their team home within a single session – albeit one extended by almost 20 minutes to avoid the players having to return after lunch. The Trent Bridge side take 23 points but their fourth win in six matches so far was not enough to dislodge Middlesex from the top of the Division Two table.Derbyshire suffered their first defeat under the stewardship of new head coach Mickey Arthur, although given their depleted bowling ranks they always faced a tough task against a strong Nottinghamshire line-up.Two of the bowlers due to start this match, Suranga Lakmal and Anuj Dal, dropped out injured at the 11th hour, Dal as late as Thursday morning, after the original team sheet had been submitted. Another, Luis Reece, suffered a groin injury after bowling less than nine overs in the first innings.Lakmal, the veteran Sri Lankan who signed a two-year contract with the county during the winter after calling time on an illustrious international career, has an elbow injury that is giving cause for concern ahead of the Vitality Blast season, which in Derbyshire’s case begins with a home fixture against Birmingham Bears next Friday.Hameed set a positive tone by dispatching the first ball of the day through midwicket for four off Sam Conners and the scoring rate never dropped below four runs per over. The former Lancashire opener, who made his first century of the season against Middlesex at Lord’s last week, had one sizeable stroke of luck on 70 when he swung hard at a ball from Nick Potts that went straight through the hands of Alex Thomson at slip. The first 10 of his 12 fours had come from largely orthodox shots but having gone past fifty he was keen to get the job done as quickly as possible, clearing the ropes in consecutive overs off Thomson’s off spin, the first time with a soaring blow over deep midwicket, the second over the much shorter boundary at extra cover. It was enough to reduce the runs required to a point where umpires David Millns and Neil Mallender were able to delay signalling lunch until the match was over, with only 24 needed when the players would normally have left the field.Slater, who offered a difficult chance to short leg off Thomson on 31, was almost sedate by comparison, needing 108 balls to pass fifty for the second time this season. The only frustration for Nottinghamshire was that Hameed could not get on strike to complete a century when Leus du Plooy bowled what would be the final over, Slater striking two boundaries to see them over the line.Derbyshire’s fears that their first-innings 260 would prove to be a below-par total, even against an attack boasting three past and present Test bowlers after being asked to bat first, were seen to be well founded when Nottinghamshire posted 358 in reply. With 19-year-old fast bowler Potts again showing himself to be a promising newcomer, claiming a career-best four for 50 in his third first-class match, they were at least able to take the match into a fourth day.Nottinghamshire, three without loss overnight, might have had expected the odd wobble chasing 165 to win but in the end were able to stroll home in the face of what can only be described as a disappointing effort by the visitors.

Hansi Flick is overseeing a fabulous debut season at the helm for Barcelona, and the German manager has instilled a winning mentality within the squad, fostering team unity and synergy, while also adopting a no-nonsense approach towards indiscipline.

Flick has quickly earned the respect of Barcelona’s squad with his mix of approachability and strict discipline, according to Mundo Deportivo. His hands-on approach has given players like Raphinha and Inigo Martinez a fresh start, making them key figures. Flick’s intensity is evident on matchdays, using half-time to correct mistakes, though his passion sometimes leads to frustration, such as an incident that saw water bottles thrown away in anger.

Indeed, the former Bayern Munich head coach has punished Jules Kounde on several occasions for turning up late to the team's pre-match routines and meetings, showing intolerance towards any form of unpunctuality and indiscipline.

DID YOU KNOW?

The rules set by Flick extend beyond the players, even applying to Barcelona's top officials, including president Joan Laporta. During Barcelona’s pre-season in the United States, Laporta and his directors arrived at training sessions in their typical formal attire. However, on one of the early days, Flick made a direct request, encouraging them to adopt a more casual dress code to better suit the informal atmosphere of training.

However, he has a soft side to him, too, believing in building personal relationships with his players and staff. He has often hosted dinners and gifted his staff expensive wine and turron for Christmas.

"Before I came here in the summer, he was at the Euros and I was talking to him. Honestly, I was really surprised by the affection he has for all of us; he tries to talk to everyone," Lamine Yamal told Mundo Deportivo in February, emphasising on the coach's efforts to keep the morale high within the dressing room.

Getty ImagesWHAT NEXT FOR HANSI FLICK?

Flick has led the Catalans to the Champions League quarter-finals, where they will face Borussia Dortmund, while they are also in the semi-finals of the Copa del Rey, where they will play Atletico Madrid in the second leg next week after a 4-4 draw in the first meeting.

As for La Liga, Flick's side are currently at the top of the table, level on points with rivals Real Madrid albeit with a game in hand. They will next be seen in action on Thursday, March 27, when they take on Osasuna in a fixture rearrangement that has angered the club.

Lisa Sthalekar: ‘It’s important to have diversity at all the different levels of cricket’

Lisa Sthalekar, the newly appointed FICA president, wants players to have a bigger say in shaping what the future of cricket looks like. The topic of cricket’s future has been in the spotlight more than ever, following last week’s IPL media rights auction, which netted the BCCI a record-breaking USD 6.2 billion (approx).Related

Restrict T20Is to just World Cups, says Shastri

Samiuddin: If ODIs feel irrelevant now, wait till the next FTP cycle

Chappell: Administrators bent on pushing Tests to the margins

With the IPL set to grow apace, there is the danger of cricket’s calendar having increasingly less space for bilateral international cricket. There have been contrasting opinions about this, ranging from that of former India coach Ravi Shastri, who wouldn’t mind it if there was no bilateral T20 cricket, to that of the former Australia captain Ian Chappell, who is concerned that cricket’s administrators are showing little concern about safeguarding the interests of longer-format cricket. In an interview with ESPNcricinfo’s Raunak Kapoor, Sthalekar accepted the growing popularity of T20 leagues, and suggested that whatever cricket’s future may be, it should ideally reflect the views of the players.”It [the scheduling] is something you’ve got to look at,” she said. “I think you’d be silly to put your head in the sand and go, ‘hey, with all these T20 leagues, how does bilateral cricket fit in?’ And also, the relevance of bilateral cricket which is the main thing. They are decisions that happen around the ICC board level.”At FICA, a body that represents major proportions of players at an international level, we’d like the players to have a say as well. and be able to shape what the future looks like. The players have always been an integral part of the game. It’s what the fans turn up to see. They are the stars, not saying they have all of the answers.”But certainly, I think they can provide an interesting insight and, hopefully, through myself, Tom Moffat, who’s the CEO, Heath Mills, the chairman, and all of the other player associations, their CEOs, hopefully we can all play a role in ensuring that the future is bright because, at the end of the day, we want our sport to thrive, we want to be the world’s No. 1 sport. How do we get there? There’s going to be a few little bumps on the road. But I’m sure if we all put our heads together, we can achieve that goal.”Lisa Sthalekar: ‘What is it like for those that don’t make millions of dollars through cricket?’•Cricket Australia

While FICA represents a large chunk of professional cricketers globally, it does not include players from India. India’s active cricketers, unlike those from most other major cricketing countries, do not have union representation, with the BCCI-recognised Indian Cricketers’ Association only representing the interests of retired players.Asked about this, Sthalekar hoped countries that don’t have players’ associations currently would create them in the future, particularly with the interests of cricketers in the game’s grassroots in mind.”When females first became part of the Australian Cricketers’ Association (ACA), it actually had nothing to do with remuneration or salary dollars, it was nothing about that.”It was about just ensuring that we had great conditions, be able to train and have the support network that we need, but also, more importantly as a cricketer, we are only in that profession for such a small period of time, and yet, we see in India, in Pakistan, in Australia, in England; people – boys and girls now – starting to put all their eggs in one basket. And only a small proportion get to actually achieve that goal.”So, what is it like for those that don’t make millions of dollars through cricket? There is a transition process and the players’ association, from a welfare point of view, can make huge inroads anywhere in the world for any player. So that’s why I think a players’ association would be great to see in other countries that don’t have it.”

ByKelan Sarson Dec 12, 2024 Southampton sack Russell Martin

It has been a struggle for the Saints since returning to the Premier League, as it is just one win from 16 league games and five points in total, which means they are already nine points adrift of safety with nearly half of the campaign played.

A 5-0 defeat to Tottenham Hotspur, in which it was that score at halftime, was enough for the Southampton hierarchy, as they called time on Martin’s reign. The announcement didn’t come long after the game against Spurs, and the statement read: “Going into the start of the season, we all knew the challenges that we would face this year as we readjusted to life in the top flight, competing in the best and most competitive league in the world.

“However, the reality of our situation is clear. The board have supported Russell and his staff and been open and transparent regarding our expectations. We have all been on the same page in recognising the urgency of needing results to improve.

“We would like to take this opportunity to thank Russell and his staff for all the hard work and dedication they have given the club on and off the pitch over the last 18 months. Everyone connected with Southampton FC will always have fantastic memories of last season, especially the play-off final win in May.”

The 38-year-old leaves St. Mary’s Stadium, having won 34 of his 73 matches in charge, but that wasn’t enough for him to keep his job, as the Saints now begin their search for his replacement, with under-21 manager Simon Rusk taking interim charge against Liverpool in the Carabao Cup on Wednesday.

Martin took over at St. Mary’s Stadium in the summer of 2023, after the Saints had been relegated to the Championship, and while he secured promotion in style, that same style was disastrous in the top flight. Now, according to The Sun’s Jack Rosser, people behind the scenes at Southampton admire Danny Rohl of Sheffield Wednesday

The Premier League side are now looking for a new manager, and Rosser states that Rohl has admirers at Southampton, as the Premier League side look keen to appoint a foreign manager. The German, who has been described as “unbelievable” by Josh Windass, has been at Hillsborough since October 2023, and he’s galvanised the Owls into a team that is potentially battling for a top six spot after being in a relegation battle for most of last season.

This is Rohl’s first managerial job, as before this he was an assistant manager at Bayern Munich, the German national team and Southampton. The 35-year-old worked at the club under former manager Ralph Hasenhuttl, so he is someone the Saints are already familiar with.
