Gloucestershire appoint Dale Benkenstein as head coach

Gloucestershire have appointed Dale Benkenstein, the former South Africa batter and batting coach, as head coach on a three-year contract.Benkenstein, 47, is also a former Durham captain who was head coach at Hampshire from 2014-16, helping them to reach two Vitality Blast Finals Days and secure promotion back to the top tier of the Championship in that time. He worked as Proteas batting coach from 2017-19 and has also coached South African side Dolphins. He joined Lancashire on a short-term contract as batting coach earlier this year and, most recently, Benkenstein was head coach at Mike Procter’s former school, Hilton College. He will lead Gloucestershire at least until the end of the 2024 season under a deal announced on Tuesday.”I am looking forward to working with a well-balanced squad of youth and experience and I feel the club as a whole have the ingredients to be consistently successful in all formats,” Benkenstein said. “It is exciting to be back involved in English county cricket where I have many fond memories.”Benkenstein made 300 List A and 264 first-class appearances during his 20-year career, scoring 15,962 first-class runs and more than 9,000 limited-overs runs.Born in Zimbabwe, he began his career at Natal, in South Africa, and after being named captain at the age of 22, took the side to four-day and one-day domestic titles. That led to Benkenstein making his ODI debut for South Africa against England in 1998 and he went on to play a total of 23 ODIs.He joined Durham in 2005 and captained them to their first major trophy in 2007, defeating Hampshire in the final of the Friends Provident competition. He then led Durham to back-to-back Championship titles in 2008 and 2009, the first in the club’s history. At Gloucestershire, Benkenstein will work alongside new performance director Steve Snell and assistant head coach Ian Harvey, who stepped in as interim head coach last March when Richard Dawson joined the ECB as elite performance pathway coach. Under Harvey, Gloucestershire won five of their group games and three divisional games, the most match wins for any side in this year’s Championship.Harvey said: “It’s been a huge honour for me to lead the team this season and I’m really proud of what the squads have achieved. Some of the performances in the County Championship in particular have been top class and there is no doubt these players have a bright future ahead.”I’ve been following the recruitment process with interest and there is no doubt that Dale is a great signing and I’m very excited to be working with him; I knew him as a fierce competitor on the pitch and I’m sure his style and considerable experience will produce great results for our club.”

Phil Salt rides rollercoaster to the top as Team Abu Dhabi defeat Delhi Bulls

Jamie Overton smashes last two balls for six each to make it five wins out of five

Aadam Patel24-Nov-2021

Phil Salt’s fifty led Team Abu Dhabi to their fifth win from five games•Abu Dhabi T10

It’s been a bit of a rollercoaster year for Phil Salt. After breaking his foot in a freak cycling accident before the start of the County Championship, he made the most of his brief opportunity to play for England for the first time over the summer. The powerful opening batter, however ended the 2021 domestic season without playing a red-ball game, before leaving Sussex to join Lancashire. Now with successive knocks of 63* off 28 and 56 off 23 for Team Abu Dhabi, Salt is finishing off his campaign in style, showcasing his fearlessness and class at the top of the order. After a player-of-the-match performance against the Chennai Braves on Monday, again Salt was the star for Liam Livingstone’s side as they pulled off another last-ball win.Chasing 122 against Delhi Bulls, he helped set the platform with an innings that included three fours and five sixes, before Jamie Overton, with 20 off five, smashed Dwayne Bravo for two sixes from the last two deliveries to make it five wins out of five for the Abu Dhabi outfit. In a side filled with renowned hitters like Livingstone, Chris Gayle and Paul Stirling, Salt has been the top scorer thus far for Team Abu Dhabi with 157 runs in five T10 innings, hitting 11 fours and 13 sixes, and striking at rate of 200+.Salt described the mood in the Team Abu Dhabi camp as “brilliant”.”We’ve got coaches that back us to the hilt and we’ve got a great group of lads that also back each other to the hilt, so as a player there’s not much more you can ask for,” Salt said.He and skipper Livingstone had got the equation down to 37 off 18, before both were dismissed by Dominic Drakes. Yet, such is the depth of their batting line-up, that it was left to none other than Gayle and Overton to take them home.No side had chased 18 in the final over of a T10 game, and when Gayle was run out with ten needed off two, it looked like it would be a first defeat for Team Abu Dhabi. But Overton ensured that their unbeaten run went on, by slogging Bravo over the sight screen then dispatching a slower ball over long-on for six more. He even had Gayle jumping out of his seat at the end.”If I was to get greedy, I’d say that I wanted to be out there at the end tonight, but I had to take the punt I did when I took it and Jama [Overton] played a great knock and won us the game,” said Salt.Paul Farbrace spoke earlier in the week about how far Salt’s keeping had come after working with Sarah Taylor, and Overton mentioned how well Salt has been striking the ball in the nets. “To be honest, the first net session I bowled to Phil I was like, ‘jeez, this guys in serious form’,” Overton said. The 25-year-old Salt joined Lancashire at the end of the season but his former Sussex teammate, Luke Wright, was full of praise for the man with whom he opened the batting at Hove. Unfortunately for Wright, making his first appearance since Finals Day, he was on the other end of a scintillating knock from Salt at the Zayed Cricket Ground.”I picked him out of the academy to come and open the batting with me years and years ago, so it’s great to see him develop the way he has and obviously he’s added the keeping to his game,” Wright said. “He’s hugely dangerous and he can strike sixes from ball one.”In this format of the game, if you don’t get it right, he’s going to punish you. It’s nice to see him continue developing. We were sad to see him leave Sussex obviously, but he’s a good player and hopefully one day he’ll be playing for England.”Salt’s appearances for England so far have been limited to three ODIs after a covid outbreak meant that a replacement squad had to be called up in the summer for the series against Pakistan and his brutal half-century at Lord’s, which included ten boundaries, was good enough to pass a Jason Roy impression contest.England’s white-ball depth is such that the line of top-order batters is long and filled with talent such as Roy, Jos Buttler and Jonny Bairstow, but Salt is doing a fine job of showing he is ready to seize another opportunity, if it comes along.

Wolves now eyeing unbeaten O’Neil replacement compared to Sir Alex Ferguson

Following such a successful first season in charge, Gary O’Neil’s Wolverhampton Wanderers side have struggled to get back on track in the current campaign, with those in the Midlands now reportedly eyeing an unbeaten replacement.

O'Neil under pressure at Wolves

Whilst the context of Wolves’ recent struggles is important, the pressure is certainly mounting on O’Neil to turn things around after his side shipped five in a disappointing 5-3 defeat against Brentford last time out. The game that Wolves should have seen as the chance to gain their first victory of the season following an opening run full of the toughest hurdles, the Bees simply brushed them aside in West London.

The fixtures don’t get any easier for O’Neil and his side after the international break, either, with the visit of Manchester City possibly only compiling their misery even further as those off the pitch begin to consider their options.

Of course, patience is key but given that the former Bournemouth boss and his side sit bottom of the Premier League behind all three newly promoted sides may well leave Wolves with no choice but to pull the trigger, especially if they manage to land one replacement.

Manager with 12 wins vs Wolves is now "very keen" on taking Molineux job

He’s been called “exceptional”.

ByCharlie Smith Oct 9, 2024

According to The Sun, Wolves are now eyeing a move for Jimmy Thelin, who has made an unbeaten start to life in charge of Aberdeen to go head-to-head with Celtic after 13 games in all competitions in Scotland. Earning comparisons with the iconic Sir Alex Ferguson as a result, the Swede may now follow the Scot’s path by completing a move to the Premier League.

In what could begin a managerial merry-go-round, it will be interesting to see just how thin Wolves’ patience is with O’Neil as they seek their first Premier League win of the season.

Thelin has emerged as one to watch for Wolves

Arriving in the summer, Thelin couldn’t have asked for a much better start at Aberdeen, with his side leapfrogging Rangers to match Celtic all the way after seven games in the Scottish Premiership. And whilst longevity is key and his side’s clash against the champions up next will give everyone a clearer idea of just where they stand, Thelin is certainly one to watch.

Still just 46 years old, the Swede represents an option who carries more risk due to his inexperience in Premier League management, but perhaps a risk worth taking from Wolves’ perspective.

If the Midlands club continue to struggle under O’Neil, then hiring a manager whose style of football is firmly based on survival rather than progressing would arguably leave Wolves at a crossroads. Convincing Thelin into a move from Aberdeen could unlock the full potential of the current side, however.

With a run of Manchester City, Brighton & Hove Albion, Crystal Palace and Southampton before the November international break, it’s set to be a make-or-break period for O’Neil and his future at the Molineux. City aside, and it would be fair to say that Wolves should be coming out of that run without a winless start to their name.

Liverpool in talks with agents of £200k-p/w Real Madrid star ahead of January

Liverpool have opened talks to bolster their ranks in January as they look to continue their strong early form under Arne Slot, it has been reported.

Liverpool early favourites for Premier League title

Arne Slot’s arrival at Anfield has seen a revival of Liverpool’s fortunes, with the club currently the early favourites to lift the Premier League come the end of the campaign.

With Arsenal and Manchester City both dropping points in the early parts of the campaign, nine wins from ten has seen Liverpool move two points clear at the top of English football, with a massive seven point gap between the Reds and Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal side, who they drew 2-2 with last month.

They also sit top of the Champions League, as the only side to hold a 100% record in the competition still, following their 4-0 thrashing of Bayer Leverkusen and Aston Villa’s shock defeat to Club Brugge on Wednesday evening.

It comes in the wake of a frustrating summer, in which they tried to sign a new midfielder in the shape of Martin Zubimendi, only for the Spaniard to reject an Anfield switch in favour of remaining with Real Socieded, despite Liverpool being willing to trigger his release clause.

Ryan Gravenberch has stepped into the void and has become a key cog in Arne Slot’s side, with the young midfielder finally beginning to deliver on the massive promise that he showed at Ajax, which convinced Bayern Munich and then Liverpool to shell out for his services.

But despite his form, Liverpool remain on the hunt for an elite midfielder, and now they may be closing in on one.

Liverpool open talks for Real Madrid midfielder

That comes as a fresh report claims that Liverpool have opened talks with the representatives of Real Madrid midfielder Aurélien Tchouaméni over a potential move to Anfield. The 24-year-old was considered one of the best talents in the world when he moved to Real Madrid from Monaco in 2022, but after a strong start to his Los Blancos career he has endured a tough 2024-25 season.

Whistled by his own fans against Milan, he was substituted at half time in their 3-1 loss, and though he has started 10 of 11 La Liga games for Carlo Ancelotti’s side, his performances have been subpar for the most part.

Now, Real Madrid president Florentino Perez has reportedly green lit his exit from the Spanish capital as soon as January, and Liverpool are ready to pounce, with journalist Sacha Tavolieri claiming that Liverpool have begun talks with the player’s representatives over a move to Anfield in the January window.

kalvin-phillips-aurelien-tchouameni-liverpool-opinion

Any deal would reportedly cost around £50m, despite Tchouameni still having almost four years left to run on his £200,000 a week deal at the Santiago Bernabeu.

A significant sum, it is not thought to be one one that Liverpool would baulk at paying to land the midfielder. Though Tchouameni is struggling in Madrid, he still has the support of his teammates, with Kylian Mbappe labelling him a “frightening” talent over the summer.

“Tchouameni made a major leap from Monaco to Real Madrid. He has made a name for himself and has already won a number of trophies. And he has still got his whole career ahead of him. That’s what’s so beautiful and frightening about him. We’re talking about a guy who is only 24. He’s already achieved a lot, but he still has so much more to do.”

Should Liverpool get their way, he may be set to continue his career at Anfield come January.

Then it is not me who has to deal with it, it is the referee and today I am not sure he had it fully under control."

Arsenal plotting move to sign £25m Kiwior replacement ahead of Man City

In pursuit of adding to their defensive options, Arsenal and Mikel Arteta are now reportedly plotting a move to beat Manchester City to sign a potential replacement for Jakub Kiwior in 2025.

Arsenal transfer rumours

To say it’s been a disastrous few weeks for the Gunners would be an understatement. Luck seemed to be finally falling their way after earning a point at the Etihad and watching on as Rodri suffered a season-ending injury to hand Arteta’s side a major advantage, but after defeat at Bournemouth, a point apiece with Liverpool and one further blow against Newcastle United, Arsenal sit as many as seven points adrift of the Reds at the top of the Premier League.

Those in North London have gradually had any weakness exposed in damning fashion, including the injury-prone nature of their backline, with the likes of Riccardo Calafiori and Kiwior struggling to step up or remain fit in the absence of William Saliba and others. Perhaps forcing Arteta’s hand, the Gunners have seemingly turned their attention towards La Liga.

According to reports in Spain, Edu and Arsenal are now plotting a move to sign Cristhian Mosquera from Valencia ahead of Manchester City and Liverpool in a deal that could be worth a reported €30m (£25m) next year.

The Valencia star has been the standout in a disappointing side at the bottom of La Liga in unexpected fashion. Still just 20 years old, Arteta could yet offer the defender the perfect escape route whilst landing an upgrade on Kiwior within his backline options, with the Gunners man possibly departing in 2025. With quite the decision to make, Mosquera may be left to choose between the Premier League’s best three sides.

"Interesting" Mosquera would take Kiwior's Arsenal place

Starting none of Arsenal’s opening 10 Premier League games, Kiwior’s role in Arteta’s side is becoming less and less meaningful as the weeks go by, leaving the door ajar for a replacement to arrive next year. Of course, with Champions League to balance alongside domestic action, the game time should be there for an option with greater potential who Arsenal would likely want to replace Gabriel in the long-term.

Of course, it’s difficult to judge Kiwior’s numbers too harshly given that he’s played just 99 minutes of Premier League football so far this season, but that doesn’t take away from how impressive Mosquera has been. The 20-year-old has particularly excelled off the ball with five recoveries per 90 representing a player on the rise.

Described as “interesting” and “Paterna’s finest” by Football Talent Scout’s Jacek Kulig, Mosquera could only advance towards his potential at a club not on a collision course with relegation. If Arsenal step in, or perhaps Manchester City or Liverpool, then the defender will be one to watch.

Tottenham now plotting stunning double deal worth £58m in 2025

Still looking to transform Ange Postecoglou’s side into a team capable of finally ending their long wait for silverware, Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly plotting a stunning double deal worth £58m in 2025.

Tottenham transfer news

The Lilywhites signed well in the summer transfer window, with Dominic Solanke and Archie Gray instantly standing out as arrivals full of quality. However, there’s still plenty of work to be done on Postecoglou’s side in what is only the second season of a long project in north London. Whilst those improvements take place, the Australian will simply be hoping to repay that faith in the form of results on the pitch.

"Special" player likely to quit and could join Tottenham despite new deal

Following a mixed run of form prior to the international break, it looked as though the Lilywhites were in for another afternoon to forget against West Ham United when Mohammed Kudus opened the scoring, only for Dejan Kulusevski and Yves Bissouma to turn the game on its head, before Jean-Clair Todibo’s own goal and Son’s clinical finish sealed all three points.

Returning to winning ways in style, the Lilywhites have seemingly turned their focus back towards the transfer market. According to CaughtOffside, Spurs are now plotting a double deal to sign Orkun Kokcu and Kerem Akturkoglu, and have been quoted a fee of €70m (£58m) to do business.

Fending off interest from Premier League rivals Manchester United in the process, Spurs reportedly want to reinforce their frontline and midfield by landing the two Benfica stars for Postecoglou.

Galatasaray forward Kerem Akturkoglu.

Kokcu is particularly a man in demand, with Liverpool also recently linked with a move to sign the central midfielder in what should prove to be a hectic race for his signature. Meanwhile, Akturkoglu is a talent in his own right and would undoubtedly boost the Lilywhites’ frontline if his exploits in Europe are anything to go by.

"Leader" Kokcu would complete Tottenham midfield

With the likes of Archie Gray emerging and Bissouma gradually winning back the trust of Postecoglou, Spurs now have the chance to complete their midfield by signing Kokcu in 2025. The Turkey international has enjoyed another excellent start to the campaign by scoring four goals and assisting a further three, and has rightly taken his place on Premier League clubs’ radars as a result.

Dubbed a “leader” by Football Talent Scout’s Jacek Kulig while playing for Feyenoord in 2022, Kokcu is still just 23 and a player who looks only likely to get even better after becoming one of Benfica’s star men in the current campaign.

With the bonus of Akturkoglu on top, Spurs could be landing the deal of the summer if they secured the signature of Kokcu ahead of Premier League rivals Manchester United and Liverpool, especially with the reasonable combined price reportedly put forward by Benfica.

West Brom had Golden Boy nominee alongside Mbappe, now he’s in League Two

West Bromwich Albion have lost their way in the Championship over recent games, with Carlos Corberan’s men now going without a win in their last six contests in the unforgiving league.

Only one goal has rippled the back of the net from the last five encounters involving the goal-shy promotion contenders too, as the likes of Josh Maja up top continue to misplace their shooting boots.

Corberan will want Maja to find his golden touch in front of goal again to help his side break out of their dire slump in form, and to potentially be seen in the same breath as other potent strikers who have graced the Hawthorns turf over the years.

Memorable modern West Brom strikers

The former Sunderland man had endeared himself to the Baggies faithful with clinical performances earlier this season, with the 25-year-old boasting an incredible seven goals from seven league games at one point, as West Brom took the league by storm.

On that blistering form, West Brom fans must have been imagining that Maja was going to eclipse Dwight Gayle’s unbelievable goalscoring ability in the Championship, which saw the ex-Newcastle United attacker bag a mightily impressive 24 strikes for the Baggies during the 2018/19 campaign.

Other top performers in attack that will spring to mind is a far younger and raw Romelu Lukaku among many others, who announced himself to the English game playing for the then-Premier League outfit on loan, with 17 league strikes from 35 games during the 2012/13 season.

Of course, there are also names such as Peter Odemwingie, Salomon Rondon and more that are all fondly remembered for their efforts when playing for the West Midlands club, but not every hyped-up forward goes on to explode into life playing in the first team week in week out.

One such example even saw West Brom land a Golden Boy nominee through their own academy, only for him now to be playing in the lower depths of the EFL.

Jonathan Leko's time at West Brom

Jonathan Leko would find himself on the shortlist for the prestigious award back in 2017, after shooting up the ranks at the Hawthorns and winning himself some minutes in the men’s team.

The now 25-year-old attacker would go on to make 23 first-team appearances for the Baggies, helping himself to one goal and two assists along the way, with this Golden Boy recognition even seeing him lock arms with Kylian Mbappe who was also a fellow nominee and the eventual winner.

However, despite promising cameos in the first-team and spellbinding moments like this in the U23s making fans excited that Leko could be the next big thing out of the club, the four-time England U20 international now finds himself on the books of Milton Keynes Dons all the way down in League Two.

Whilst Mbappe plays for Real Madrid and is in the conversation for the main Ballon d’Or prize every year, Leko is grinding it out in the fourth tier of English football instead, where he has impressed it must be said.

Looking at the table above, it’s clear that the 25-year-old has found it somewhat hard to pin down a club since his exit from the Hawthorns in 2020, but he has shown flashes of his excellence pulling on an MK Dons strip, with 12 goal contributions coming his way from 46 clashes.

Leko has, unfortunately, been sidelined with injury after injury this year – with no appearances coming his way this season for Scott Lindsey’s men so far as a result – as the one-time Golden Boy nominee aims to overcome more career hurdles.

The former homegrown West Brom talent must have been anticipating that his career would catapult into stardom around the time of his Global recognition, but instead, he is now a forgotten member of the Baggies’ youth set-up.
