Aston Villa set for another double injury boost after return of Emi Buendia

With their return to European action right around the corner, Aston Villa have been handed a crucial injury boost with two more first-team stars on course to make their returns after Emi Buendia returned to the fold on Saturday.

Aston Villa injury news

The Villans are set to square off against Young Boys on Tuesday in their first Champions League game since the 1982/83 campaign. The historic occasion will represent just how far Unai Emery has taken the Midlands club and just how much further the Spaniard could yet taken them, such is his managerial prowess.

Meanwhile, in the Premier League, the aim will be to make it back-to-back top four finishes to ensure that the last campaign was no blip and that Aston Villa are very much here to stay among England’s elite. Only time will tell whether they manage to secure that achievement, however. Just ask Newcastle United just how difficult a task it is and they’ll heed the warning that squad depth is key.

The Magpies struggled to balance the Champions League and domestic football last season, suffering an injury crisis along the way in a relatively thin squad. So far though, it is the type of bad luck that Villa have avoided. In fact, they’ve just been handed a triple injury boost out of Bodymoor Heath.

As confirmed by Emery, Boubacar Kamara and Tyrone Mings are nearing returns after missing the majority of last season through injury. The Villa boss told reporters via Birmingham Live: “Very good news, very good news. They are starting to train with us, Tyrone Mings and Boubacar Kamara as well.

“Emi Buendia is of course getting more time and he is close to start playing again in official matches with us. Mings and Kamara I think in a few weeks will be available to be in the squad and start playing as well.”

"Fantastic" Buendia can ease Diaby blow

One negative in an otherwise positive summer transfer window was the departure of Moussa Diaby to Saudi Pro League side Al-Ittihad. The winger swapped the Midlands for the chance to join Karim Benzema’s side in Saudi just one year after arriving. Turning towards Jaden Philogene as a result of the departure, both he and the returning Buendia should ensure that Diaby becomes a forgotten man at Villa Park.

The former Norwich City star is yet to get a real taste of life under Emery, especially in the side that qualified for the top four last season, but has more than enough quality to make an impact. Now 27 years old and likely in his prime, Buendia can return with a bang after missing over 50 games of action.

Emery praised the midfielder after his injury comeback in pre-season, saying via BBC Sport: “The best news is his comeback. Emiliano Buendia’s comeback after one year.

“We are happy with his return and we have to work now with him trying to get the best of him progressively. The first 30 minutes he played, really, is fantastic for us and for the team.”

All three men represent key returns for a Villa side who will need all the depth they can get to complete some major shocks among Europe’s elite this season.

Nottingham Forest hit with injury blow as £80k-p/w ace could miss Liverpool

Nottingham Forest's Anfield challenge may have just become that much more difficult following Nuno Espirito Santo's verdict that one particular star man could be set to miss the trip.

Nottingham Forest injury news

The Midlands club will already be without Ibrahim Sangare for the trip and may also be without Willy Boly in two early blows on top of a third potential injury concern. The injuries come at a frustrating time given the test that awaits against an unbeaten and currently impenetrable Liverpool side.

At Anfield too, the Reds rarely suffer defeat. In fact, they rarely even drop points at home at all. So Forest, especially not at full strength, are likely to be in for a long afternoon on Saturday.

Of course though, stranger things have happened and those at the City Ground still have plenty of impressive attacking talent, with James Ward-Prowse in line to make his league debut for the club to provide that added set piece threat. The former Southampton man completed a late loan move from West Ham United, but fans may have to wait to see his partnership with one particular forward in action.

James Ward-Prowse scores from a corner for West Ham

According to Nottingham Forest News, Chris Wood could now miss Nottingham Forest's trip to Liverpool this Saturday as Nuno wants to guard against fatigue following the forward's game in America with New Zealand over the international break.

The former Wolverhampton Wanderers manager also spoke on injuries to Boly and Sangare, telling the media: "We have a doubt with Sangare and Boly and we know Danilo is out. We are assessing all of them. We have to wait a little bit to be 100 per cent sure. Boly has a calf injury. We are assessing all of them. We still have one more day then we will see.”

Potentially missing up to four players, Forest face an uphill battle to take anything away from their trip to Anfield.

"Important" Wood is still Forest's best forward

After they missed out on Eddie Nketiah in the summer, there may have been concerns over whether Forest's frontline was strong enough to compete in the Premier League, but Wood has since once again put those doubts to bed. The New Zealand international has enjoyed an excellent start to the campaign, scoring twice in three games and will still be hoping to be fit enough to make the squad against Liverpool.

Forest and Nuno are well aware of the £80k-a-week forward's importance, with the manager full of praise for his number 11 last season, telling BBC Sport last season: "Chris has been very important for us, especially with the absence of Taiwo [Awoniyi]. He knows the needs that we have in that position and he has been performing very well. Hopefully he keeps like that – healthy and always available."

Now, however, he could be left to cope without his star striker this weekend in one of the toughest games that the Premier League has to offer his Nottingham Forest side.

He lost the ball 14 times: Careless Celtic man was even worse than Scales

Celtic’s defensively perfect start to the Scottish Premiership season came to an end as they finally conceded a goal in their 2-1 win over Ross County.

Ronan Vale got two opportunities to beat Kasper Schmeichel from the penalty spot in the first half, after the Danish titan saved the first effort whilst a yard off his line, and found the bottom corner with his second.

The Hoops rallied in the second half, though, as Alistair Johnston deflected in Callum McGregor’s shot before setting up Nicolas Kuhn for the winner.

It was a mixed afternoon for central defender Liam Scales, who is next to a new centre-back partner in Auston Trusty, against Ross County on Sunday.

Liam Scales' performance in numbers

The Ireland international will be disappointed with himself for his involvement in the penalty for the home side. He left his arm outstretched when trying to block the cross and gave the referee, via VAR, a decision to make.

That left the Bhoys 1-0 down in the first-half but Scales did do a lot of fantastic defensive work to make up for his major error for the opening goal.

Liam Scales in action for Celtic.

The left-footed titan won 11 of his 15 aerial battles and four of his four duels on the ground throughout the 90 minutes, which shows that he was largely dominant defensively and did not allow the County attackers to get the better of him very often.

Scales, who completed 87% of his attempted passes, was not the worst performer on the pitch for Celtic, despite his error for the penalty, though, as Arne Engels endured a frustrating game.

Arne Engels' struggles against Ross County

The Belgian midfielder had registered one goal and three assists in his last four games for the club heading into this clash with Ross County, but failed to build on his superb form.

Engels, who joined from Augsburg in the summer transfer window, did create three chances but none of them were deemed to be ‘big chances’ and he failed with four of his six cross attempts, and all three of his long pass attempts.

Chris Sutton described his play in possession as “careless” during Sky Sports’ live coverage of the game, which is backed up by his pass completion rate of 81% and the fact that he lost possession 14 times.

The 21-year-old dud was withdrawn from the game in the 61st minute, with Celtic 1-0 down, and the Hoops went on to score twice and win the match after his exit from the field.

Engels, who made one tackle and failed to make a clearance, block, or interception, did not do enough to convince Brendan Rodgers that he deserved to remain on the pitch and it turned out to be a great decision by the Northern Irish head coach.

Therefore, the former Bundesliga starlet was even worse than Scales, who played the full 90 minutes and made numerous important defensive interventions, and may now be at risk of losing his place when Celtic come back after the international break.

Chelsea have promised £63m Jackson alternative they will try to sign him

Chelsea have promised an alternative striker to Nicolas Jackson that they will try to strike a deal for him, despite the Senegal international’s fine start to 2024/2025.

Despite doubts surrounding the 23-year-old and his ability to lead the line under Enzo Maresca, Jackson has silenced his critics with an array of excellent displays so far this campaign.

The former Villarreal starlet most recently bagged a brace and an assist in Chelsea’s 3-0 demolition of West Ham at the London Stadium last weekend, with goals also coming against both Wolves and Crystal Palace beforehand.

“We are 100% happy with Nicolas,” said Maresca, speaking to BBC Sport after full-time against West Ham.

“Since I arrived here, he’s been very good on the ball in terms of goals and assists, but he also did a fantastic job off the ball. We are very happy.”

This comes after Chelsea failed to bring in a new prolific scorer in the summer, and regardless of Jackson’s form, not to mention the presence of Christopher Nkunku, it remains the case that Maresca’s side could still sign one next year.

Nicolas Jackson scores for Chelsea

Chelsea chiefs are pushing Victor Boniface’s name behind-the-scenes, according to some reports, with the Nigerian starting this season at Bayer Leverkusen in great scoring form.

Meanwhile, the west Londoners are also still being linked with Boniface’s international teammate – Victor Osimhen.

Chelsea made a late bid to sign Osimhen during the summer, but couldn’t get an eleventh-hour deal over the line in time, as the 25-year-old instead settled for a loan move to Galatasaray.

His deal with the Turkish Süper Lig champions includes a rumoured break clause, which would allow interested clubs to strike a deal for him mid-season. Chelsea could have a free run over signing Osimhen in January, with BlueCo already making contact ahead of a potential move (TEAMtalk).

Chelsea promise Osimhen they will try to sign him next year

TEAMtalk have another update on the situation this week, and they write that Chelsea have promised Osimhen they will try to sign him in 2025, even if other names are on their shortlist as well.

The African superstar’s new release clause is set at £63 million, which is a mark-down from his original one in the summer, so the incentive for Chelsea to make a move is there – even if Jackson will feel pretty hard done by.

Napoli striker Victor Osimhen

Called “unmarkable” and a “force of nature” by the Italian press, Osimhen was one of Serie A’s most prolific stars before he joined Galtasaray to escape Antonio Conte’s Napoli.

“I’ve told him how good the club is and what a fantastic place it is to improve. He’s interested which is encouraging. He wants to come to the club,” said ex-Chelsea midfielder John Obi-Mikel in August.

“Chelsea is a massive club and he would like to follow in the footsteps of other Nigerians to play for Chelsea. I think it’s 60/40 in favour that Osimhen comes, I think so, he wants to come. I think there should be a straight swap because Napoli want [Romelu] Lukaku.”

Rachael Haynes wary of looming quarantine outside NSW ahead of India home series

Australia vice-captain Rachael Haynes is prepared for what appears inevitable disruption to the start of the season and prospect of hotel quarantine around the series against India in September.India’s tour is currently due to start on September 17 with a warm-up match in Sydney followed by the first ODI on September 19. However, with the city’s lockdown already extended to the end of August that appears increasingly challenging to make happen alongside the various border restrictions that are currently in place. The series is also due to head to Melbourne and Perth before returning to Sydney for the T20Is in early October. As of Thursday, large swathes of Australia’s east coast were in lockdown with south-east Queensland, including Brisbane, and Victoria also back under tight restrictions due to Covid-19 outbreaks.Haynes said she expected some clarity in the next week or so about what plans would be put in place but was preparing to have to leave New South Wales and quarantine in another state at some point.Last season the international summer started with Australia facing New Zealand in Brisbane which involved players from Victoria and New South Wales having to quarantine for two weeks before the series although they were permitted to train.”The reality is that the players in New South Wales are probably very much aware that to leave the state we will have to participate in some form of quarantine,” Haynes told reporters. “Exactly how that looks, whether it’s a hard hotel quarantine or perhaps like when we quarantined in Brisbane and we were able to train some capacity, I don’t believe there is an answer to that question at the moment but there will be over the coming weeks.”Once we know that it’ll crystalise what it looks like in terms of our preparation but very much the players based in New South Wales are resigned to the fact that we’ll have to quarantine in some capacity.”Currently Haynes, who signed a new one-year deal as captain of defending WBBL champions Sydney Thunder on Thursday, and the rest of the New South Wales squad can continue pre-season training under various Covid restrictions.”Unfortunately, we probably aren’t too unfamiliar with this circumstance given the nature of the pandemic,” Haynes said. “It’s certainly had its challenges, but we have been fortunate that our New South Wales programme has been able to continue albeit under slightly modified restrictions. That’s allowed us to continue training, it’s allowed us a good preparation heading into the international season.”Think early next week we’ll find out exactly what that looks like in terms of our preparation against India and we’ve been given every indication that the intention is for the Big Bash to continue on beyond that.”As we know the pandemic always throws a spanner in the works, and if we had a crystal ball it would be nice to predict where we would be in a couple of months’ time, but I learnt last year there’s no point getting too far ahead of yourself.”Following the multi-format series against India, the WBBL is due to start on October 14 in Sydney with the hope that it can return to a country-wide tournament following last season’s hub. Haynes and her partner Leah Poulton are expecting their first child in mid-October, so if the start of the competition had to move out of the state, Haynes’ availability for the Thunder would likely be impacted.”I’m definitely not going to miss the birth of my child if I have any control over that, so I’ll definitely be returning to Sydney in October,” she said. “It’s really hard to know exactly how that will look and I’d be guessing how that transition will take place.”From my perspective I want to play as much of the season as possible and be there to support my team-mates. If we do kick off in Sydney as was originally intended I’ll definitely be a part of that and if there are any changes that I need to make then I’ll cross that bridge when it comes.”

Paratici’s scouting network pushing Spurs to sign £30k-p/w starlet in 2025

Tottenham are now working to sign a new midfielder in 2025, and have reportedly leaned on a former employee’s expertise to help them get a move over the line for Ange Postecoglou’s side.

Tottenham enjoy strong season start

Spurs followed up their 3-0 Premier League win over Manchester United with a 2-1 victory over Ferencvaros in the Europa League, helping them record five straight wins since a home defeat in the north London derby.

They are one of five sides to have taken maximum points in the Europa League to date, while a poor start to the season is now firmly behind them, having surged up the table in domestic action too.

It has all come while Postecoglou trials a new system in north London, which sees Dejan Kulusevski playing as a central midfielder alongside James Maddison, rather than on the right flank where he had spent the majority of his Spurs career to date.

“Deki [Kulusevski] is doing great. He’s been out of this world in many respects as to what he’s able to do in a central role,” Postecoglou said ahead of his side’s clash with Brighton.

“We used him wide last year because we didn’t have too many options out there and that’s where he was comfortable. We started using him inside and I felt he felt that it unshackled him a little bit.

“He has an unbelievable capacity to run on and off the ball, his physical numbers are ridiculous and he has the quality to hurt teams with that.”

The base of midfield remains of some concern to Spurs, with Yves Bissouma yet to truly be trusted this season by Postecoglou and Rodrigo Bentancur often struggling to complete 90 minutes. Now, reports suggest that Spurs may have identified the future of that position, and could look to sign him in 2025 with a little bit of help.

Spurs eye Serie A maestro

That comes as former Spurs goalkeeper Paul Robinson revealed that Italy international Samuele Ricci is a player that Tottenham could look to move for in the summer, with Spurs “certainly interested in signing” the Torino starlet.

The midfielder has become a stalwart in their midfield and has racked up four caps for the Italian national side. Still just 23 years old, he has reportedly caught the eye of Manchester City too, as they look to find an alternative to the injured Rodri.

Time's up: Ange can send Spurs star packing after Mikey Moore's emergence

As it stands, Ricci is down to the final two years of his £30,000 a week deal in Turin, and is yet to pen fresh terms. He was described as a “very strong” and “complete” defensive midfielder by Rising Ballers on X, which is precisely what the Lilywhites are missing, and he could be on the move this summer.

Tottenham have recently had success in the Serie A market, and remain alert to it thanks to the work of former chief Fabio Paratici, with Football Insider claiming that the club and Paratici have “maintained contact” despite a football ban for the latter.

They add that “the majority of Spurs’ scouting and recruitment system was established under his guidance”, which has resulted in strong links to Serie A that has allowed them to beat clubs to the signings of Destiny Udogie, Guglielmo Vicario and more in recent seasons.

Now, he could have lent a helping hand to land one of Europe’s most promising midfielders, with the same report claiming that Paratici’s team are “now working” on a deal. Though well stocked in that position, Spurs are lacking a truly world-class option at the base of midfield. Should they beat Manchester City to Rodri’s replacement, they may well have found one.

Mugharbel added on attracting top talent to a league that boasts big ambition: “Foreign players have always been part of Saudi teams. In recent years, the number of possible foreign players in teams has changed. This season we have included the number of eight plus two others under 21 years of age.
