Hashim Amla, Will Jacks play velvet glove and iron fist to send Surrey top

For a while, it seemed a blessing in disguise that this match, Middlesex’s final Lord’s appearance of a truncated season, was taking place behind closed doors. Certainly, for those fans tuning in via the club’s livestream, the first half did not make for pretty viewing. In the end it was simply a shame that a giddy, run-filled evening was not accompanied by a full house roaring on the home side’s bid at a record chase against their cross-town rivals.Ultimately, they would have gone home disappointed, as Surrey, resurgent after four wins in a row, held their nerve to claim back-to-back London derby bragging rights and power their way to the top of the South Group on net run-rate. Fourth-placed Middlesex have three games remaining, all away from home, in which to hoist themselves back into contention. That Middlesex ensured their supporters would have not switched off from following online long before the closing stages was largely down to the efforts of Stevie Eskinazi, whose 77 from 44 balls lifted him to the top of the Blast run-scorers list. Joe Cracknell, on Blast debut, signalled his ability by cracking Jamie Overton on to the roof of the scorers’ box at deep midwicket – leaving a visible dent just below Father Time – during a spirited outing at No. 3, while John Simpson and Eskinazi combined to add 65 in 5.4 overs but Surrey always remained just out of reach. Will Jacks, who had produced a smash-and-grab half-century to fire Surrey with the bat, burgled his way through four overs for 23 – by far the most economical return of the night – and left-arm spinner Dan Moriarty produced another impressive showing in his debut season. When Overton turned in his follow through to run Eskinazi out, with 61 needed from 18 balls, the jig was up. “We’re really happy. [It’s a] London derby, we’ve been playing well coming in, and we knew a win could take us top,” Jacks said. “It was a really important game with a couple of teams on our tail. We’ve been gradually improving, got a few wins under our belt and this was a really good performance.”Having successfully defended a total of 142 at this ground on Saturday, it was a curiosity that Middlesex on this occasion decided to chase, albeit on a hybrid pitch that played well throughout. Pretty soon it was their bowlers receiving a chasing, as Hashim Amla stroked his first and fourth balls to the boundary, 10 runs coming off Tom Helm’s opening over. Amla and Jacks, velvet glove and iron fist, had soon jounced along to 59 without loss from the Powerplay and the tone of the innings was set.Jacks demonstrated his clean-striking with sixes over extra cover off both Tim Murtagh and Helm and it was not until the eighth over that Middlesex managed to get through an over without conceding a boundary. Luke Hollman did not get off lightly, however, as his next saw Jacks begin a trend for losing the ball by planting successive deliveries into the building site at the Nursery End. Not so much under construction as demolition job, the second a straight hit over the sightscreen to bring up a 26-ball fifty.

It was Amla and Jacks who propelled Surrey to their first win of the season in all formats (after five defeats, a no-result and a tie), against Hampshire at The Oval 11 days ago, and they extended their opening stand into three figures before the latter picked out long-off to give Nathan Sowter the breakthrough – Hollman clutching the ball gratefully at the second attempt.Amla, magic in the old wand still, skipped out to loft Hollman, Middlesex’s highly-regarded young leggie, just beyond the rope at extra cover to move to his own half-century, from 37 balls. The former South Africa international swept Sowter, normally Middlesex’s thriftiest bowler during the middle overs, for six more in the 14th but was then bowled aiming a less-cultured hack later in the same over.Still Surrey kept coming, England Test opener Rory Burns dinging another ball into the concrete and necessitating a replacement as Martin Andersson was left with figures of 0.1 for 11 after his first two deliveries were deemed no-balls. Andersson’s over eventually cost 21 but none of the Middlesex attack was left unscathed, with only Murtagh and Hollman managing to go at less than 10 an over.Steven Finn had probably long begun to question the wisdom of bowling first when he ran in to deliver the final over. Overton pulverised 21 runs from it, including perhaps the biggest blow of the night into the hospitality boxes in the Grandstand (where it will likely remain until next March) as Surrey streaked past 200 and on to their joint second-highest total in London derbies. Had it been a possibility, they would have gone a long way to silencing the crowd.

Spurs keen on signing "monumental" £27m Porro upgrade

After securing Europa League qualification in their first campaign without Harry Kane, Tottenham Hotspur have a massive summer ahead of them.

If Daniel Levy and Co want to give Ange Postecoglou the best chance of succeeding in his aim of taking the club back to the top, they will have to seriously back him.

Tottenham Hotspur manager Ange Postecoglou

Luckily for fans, that looks like it may be happening, as the latest player touted for a move to N17 is one of the most exciting right-backs in Europe, although it could spell trouble for Pedro Porro.

Tottenham Hotspur transfer news

According to a recent report from Dutch publication De Telegraaf, Tottenham Hotspur are one of several Premier League teams interested in Feyenoord's exciting right-back, Lutsharel Geertruida.

Alongside the Lilywhites, Liverpool and North London rivals, Arsenal are said to be keen on bringing the defender to England this summer.

While the Dutchman has been an essential cog in the Rotterdam side's recent successes, the report claims the club are happy to let him go in the summer and cash in, so long as teams pay them their €32m valuation, which is around £27m.

Feyenoord's Lutsharel Geertruida

While it's not a bargain, £27m does seem fair for a player who has looked so impressive over the last few years, and so Levy and Co should be looking to get this deal over the line, even at the expense of Porro.

How Geertruida compares to Porro

So, if Spurs were able to get his deal over the line and bring Geertruida to the white half of North London, his most significant barrier to first-team football would be Porro. But how do the pair stack up against one another?

Well, when looking at their raw output, it's clear that both full-backs like to get forward and help out with attacks, but as impressive as the Spurs man is, it's the "monumental" Dutchman, as U23 scout Antonio Mango dubbed him, who comes out on top here.

In his 47 games this season, he scored nine goals and provided five assists, which is a goal involvement every 3.3 games, whereas the Spaniard's four goals and seven assists in 51 games work out to a goal involvement every 4.6 games.

Unfortunately for the former Sporting CP man, while the comparison isn't entirely as one-sided when looking at the pair's underlying numbers, this is another area in which he loses out to the 23-year-old.

For example, while the Rotterdam-born star comes out second best for metrics such as assists, shots, shot-creating actions, tackles, blocks and interceptions, he comes out ahead for most others, including non-penalty expected goals and assists, non-penalty goals, progressive passes and carries, shots on target, passing accuracy, aerial duels won and errors, all per 90.

Moreover, while the Spurs ace can play slightly further up the pitch and in a wing-back position, he can't match the versatility of the Feyenoord star, who has started games at centre-back, left-back and even defensive midfield.

Lastly, while Porro is a brilliant player, Geertruida appears to have him beaten in most important areas, and with Mango describing him as a player who "oozes class on the ball," bringing him to N17 should be a priority in the coming weeks.

Last-ball defeat sends Somerset out as Ian Cockbain sets up Gloucestershire win

Tom Smith hits final ball for four to seal home quarter against Northants

ECB Reporters Network20-Sep-2020Ian Cockbain played the starring role as Gloucestershire eliminated arch-rivals Somerset from the Vitality Blast with a thrilling two-wicket Central Group win in Bristol. The visitors posted 161 for 7 after winning the toss under cloudless skies, Lewis Gregory hitting 50 and Babar Azam 42. Tom Smith was the pick of the Gloucestershire bowlers with 2 for 25.In reply, Gloucestershire reached 163 for eight off the final ball of the match, Smith hitting a boundary off Ollie Sale through midwicket. Cockbain had set up the victory with a brilliant 89 off 57 balls, including nine fours and three sixes. The result meant a home quarter-final for the hosts, while Somerset were left to reflect on a bitterly disappointing campaign. They were given a brisk start to their innings by Babar and Steve Davies, who took the score to 53 by the end of the fifth over. Davies was timing the ball sweetly but, having moved to 31 off 19 balls, he pulled a catch to deep midwicket off Josh Shaw.Gloucestershire then applied their customary mid-innings squeeze, taking pace off the ball with left-arm spinners Smith and Graeme van Buuren, well supported by the wily medium pace of Benny Howell.Somerset could score only 24 runs between the fifth and tenth overs, the last of which from Howell saw Will Smeed caught at mid-off.Smith removed Tom Abell to a catch at point in the 11th over and in his next claimed the big wicket of Babar, the Pakistan batsman giving a return catch, having faced 35 balls and hit five fours.Tom Lammonby reverse-swept a catch to deep cover off van Buuren and Somerset were struggling at 105 for 5.Lewis Gregory’s half-century provided the impetus for Somerset•Getty ImagesBut Gregory supplied much-needed acceleration, hitting the first six of the innings in the 18th over and following up with another maximum over deep square off David Payne. The Somerset skipper also hit four fours in his 28-ball innings. When he fell to the second ball of the final over, his team could add only two off the last four deliveries.Sale struck a major blow for the visitors by have Chris Dent caught at deep square off the final ball of the second over of Gloucestershire’s reply.Miles Hammond feathered a catch to wicketkeeper Davies off Josh Davey to make it 20 for 2. That became 27 for 3 when James Bracey mishit a catch to mid-on to give Sale a second wicket. When Ryan Higgins holed out to deep midwicket off 19-year-old left-arm spinner Lewis Goldsworthy, it was 50 for 4 and much rested on Cockbain, who was looking in dangerously good form. The first six of the innings was struck by van Buuren off Goldsworthy in the 12th over, but he then fell to a catch at short third-man off Josh Davey.Cockbain moved to a classy 35-ball half-century, with seven fours. He and Jack Taylor both hit straight sixes off Goldsworthy as the 15th over went for 19 runs.Taylor then drove a catch to long-off to give Gregory a wicket. Cockbain cleared the ropes again off Sale and Howell hit Gregory for a straight six to leave 24 required from two overs.Another Cockbain six off Davey made Gloucestershire favourites, but the batsman then cross-batted a catch to long-on.The last over, bowled by Sale, began with 13 runs needed. Two Howell boundaries followed, but there was another twist then he was caught at long-off.Three runs were still required when Smith faced the last ball, which he smote over wide long-on for four to loud cheers from Gloucestershire fans in the flats adjoining the ground.Vitality Blast quarter-finals:Nottinghamshire v Leicestershire

Arsenal hold fresh agent talks as they eye £34 million Sesko alternative

Arsenal have held fresh talks with the representatives of a £34 million striker, as they eye up an alternative to heavily-linked RB Leipzig star Benjamin Sesko.

Arsenal named as serious contenders in race for Sesko

The Gunners, as per widespread reports in the last fortnight, are major contenders in the race to sign Sesko this summer.

£100,000-per-week Arsenal ace set to quit as Premier League side open talks

An official offer is being prepared.

ByEmilio Galantini Jun 6, 2024

The Slovenia international scored an impressive 18 goals in all competitions last season, which has attracted interest from some of Europe's most elite sides who are chasing a prolific frontman for their squads. Sesko's contract also includes a tempting £55 million release clause, which is yet another pull for sides looking to save serious money in the transfer market.

Goalscoring strikers of the 21-year-old's ilk usually come at an extortionate premium, with Arsenal-linked forwards Victor Osimhen (£113 million) and Viktor Gyokeres (£86 million) both commanding marquee price tags.

Sesko could leave Leipzig for a much cheaper fee, and with Arsenal looking to bolster other areas of Mikel Arteta's team, the 6ft 5 centre-forward could come as an excellent solution.

"He wants to take some time to decide if he will stay at RB Leipzig and sign a new contract, or leave to try a new experience," said Fabrizio Romano in an update on Sesko's future to the Here We Go podcast (via football.london).

“The first step has to be to inform RB Leipzig of his future at the club. Leipzig presented an important contract to Sesko to be the star of the squad with an improved salary and big money.

"He has to decide whether he wants to be the superstar of Leipzig for one more season or to leave in 2025. He has already said no to two big proposals for €30 million (£26 million) per season salary in Saudi Arabia, so he was not attracted by the possibility.

“He has three proposals from the Premier League – Manchester United, Chelsea & Arsenal – these three clubs have already approached Sesko and presented their project. They want him so now it's basically on the player.”

Depending on the developments surrounding Sesko, with the player having many different offers, Arsenal will need to have alternative options. One of them, according to The Boot Room and journalist Graeme Bailey, is Bologna forward Joshua Zirkzee.

Arsenal hold fresh agent talks as they eye Zirkzee

TBR claim that Arsenal have held fresh talks with the agents of Zirkzee recently, and while separate reports indicate that AC Milan are in pole position to sign the Dutchman (Fabrizio Romano), it is never done until contracts are officially signed.

Bologna striker Joshua Zirkzee

The striker's contract includes a £34 million release clause, which is even less than Sesko's, so this could be one to watch if Arsenal decide to try and hijack Milan's proposed move.

Multan, Rawalpindi to host Pakistan's white-ball series against Zimbabwe

Series “strengthens Pakistan’s reputation as a safe and secure country but also a healthy one,” says PCB

Multan will host international cricket after a gap of over 12 years when Pakistan’s three-ODI series against Zimbabwe is held there from October 30 to November 3. This will be followed by a series of three T20Is, all in Rawalpindi, before the visitors return home after a three-week stay in Pakistan, a tour that Zakir Khan, the PCB’s director of international cricket, said “strengthens Pakistan’s reputation as a safe and secure country but also a healthy one after having successfully overcome the Covid-19 pandemic”. All the matches will be played behind closed doors.Apart from signalling cricket’s resumption in Pakistan after the Covid-19-enforced hiatus, the series will mark the beginning of the World Cup Super League campaign – the pathway for direct qualification to the 2023 50-over World Cup – for both teams.Series schedule

Oct 30 – 1st ODI, Multan
Nov 1 – 2nd ODI, Multan
Nov 3 – 3rd ODI, Multan
Nov 7 – 1st T20I, Rawalpindi
Nov 8 – 2nd T20I, Rawalpindi
Nov 10 – 3rd T20I, Rawalpindi

“The confirmation of the series schedule against Zimbabwe after having successfully hosted Sri Lanka and Bangladesh, as well as Marylebone Cricket Club and HBL Pakistan Super League V, in the 2019-20 season not only strengthens Pakistan’s reputation as a safe and secure country but also a healthy one after having successfully overcome the Covid-19 pandemic,” Khan said in a PCB statement. “This series is critical to Pakistan as it aspires to qualify directly for the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023 and, as such, every point in the Super League will count.”Our last ODI series was against Sri Lanka, 12 months ago, so the boys will have to hit the ground running and try to pocket maximum points.”The choice of Multan, which has hosted five Tests and seven ODIs over the years but none since an ODI against Bangladesh in April 2008, is an interesting one.”We have strategically scheduled Zimbabwe’s matches in Multan and Rawalpindi, the venues which will be hosting the National T20 Cup from 30 September to 18 October,” Khan said. “By the time Zimbabwe arrives, we would have gained enough experience on bio-securing hotels, player transportation, the venues and the players’ dressing rooms as delivery of this series will be under strict Covid-19 protocols to ensure the health and safety of all participants.”According to the PCB statement, Zimbabwe will have a 32-member playing squad travelling to Pakistan, to take part in both the series as well as some intra-squad warm-up matches. They will reach on October 20.”The squad will undergo two Covid-19 tests within a space of 48 hours prior to their departure in Harare, while the second tests will be conducted as soon as they arrive in Islamabad,” the statement added. “Players and Player Support Personnel testing negative in Islamabad will be eligible to resume training at a venue, which the PCB will confirm in due course.”Players and player support personnel testing positive during the tour will have to observe a five-day self-isolation and will only be allowed to re-integrate with the side after two negative tests.”In 2015 Zimbabwe were the first team to visit Pakistan after the terror attacks on the Sri Lanka team in Lahore in 2009, paving the way over the next five years for a number of teams to return. Last year Pakistan hosted ints first Tests in the country since 2009 and earlier this year hosted the entire Pakistan Super League for the first time.

Spurs eyeing "one of the best strikers in the world" to replace Kane

Tottenham Hotspur opted against directly replacing Harry Kane last summer, with freshly-anointed Ange Postecoglou instead choosing to spread the recouped an initial £85m fee for the Three Lions captain across the pitch.

The myriad additions, namely Guglielmo Vicario, James Maddison and Micky van de Ven, had a transformative effect on the Spurs squad but greater depth is now needed after injuries pulled Tottenham away from early title contention, ultimately missing out on top four too.

Harry Kane at Euro 2024

Kane, Tottenham's record scorer, has since scored 44 goals from 45 matches for Bayern Munich, and thus Postecoglou and Co will need to choose wisely in securing a reliable new marksman.

Spurs transfer news

According to Sky Sports News, Tottenham have joined Manchester United and a number of other Premier League clubs in adding Lille striker Jonathan David to their summer shortlists.

While there hasn't been any official contact between clubs yet, David, having entered the final year of his contract, will be allowed to leave this summer, and Spurs are indeed keen.

Separate recent reports claim that the Canadian striker's sale will demand a £25m outlay.

Why Jonathan David is one of the best around

David has been a reliable scorer for Lille over the years, scoring 84 goals across 183 matches after moving to France from Belgian team Gent in a €30m (£25m) deal back in 2020.

The 24-year-old has demonstrably improved his attacking ability over the past two years and will now feel ready to try his foot in the Premier League, actually hailed for his "absolutely insane" shooting skills by journalist Antonio Mango.

David might not be Kane but he does offer a certain semblance to the iconic Lilywhites forward, ranking among the top 3% of forwards across Europe's top five leagues over the past year for pass completion and the top 20% for progressive passes per 90, as per FBref.

Kane is one of the pre-eminent goalscorers of his generation but he's also an unrivalled playmaker from No. 9, ranking among the top 10% of forwards for assists and the top 11% for progressive passes per 90.

David, in this regard, would be able to emulate some of the 30-year-old's more unique qualities while maintaining his own sense of prowess in striking on goal too. David, after all, also ranks among the top 17% of forwards for goals scored but only the top 49% for shots taken, emphasising his clinical quality. It is not a surprise, therefore, to see him celebrated as "one of the best strikers in the world" by Canadian reporter Tony Marinaro.

LOSC Lille striker Jonathan David

By acquiring his signature, Heung-min Son would be free to feature in his favoured role on the left flank more often, the South Korean blending his own remarkable dynamism against David's multi-strength forward style.

It may, unfortunately, knock Richarlison down the pecking order, but the Canada international would undoubtedly prove to be an upgrade, with the Brazilian enjoying a purple patch last season but only starting 18 Premier League matches as injuries overpowered his good form.

Richarlison in anguish for Tottenham

The 26-year-old's chequered past in front of goal as a Lilywhite is likely a key reason behind Postecoglou's willingness to cash in, with Saudi Pro League suitors among those interested in signing Richarlison this summer.

One thing's for certain, David would be an interesting profile to complete the Tottenham frontline, finally succeeding Kane with a player capable of playing his old role and enhancing the overall fluency. He is, as they say, one of the best around. Kane is too, so this seems like a fabulous pick if they are to finally replace their record goalscorer.
