West Ham transfer to sign "machine" could now be hijacked by Man United

West Ham United, with Mohammed Kudus on international duty with Ghana at AFCON and Jarrod Bowen sidelined through injury, have suddenly been left short on attacking options this month. Despite their need for attacking reinforcements, however, reports suggest that the Hammers could suffer a transfer blow at the hands of Premier League rivals Manchester United.

West Ham transfer news

Even if Kudus and Bowen were available, it would come as no shock if West Ham focused on offensive players in the January transfer market. Barring the aforementioned duo, David Moyes has just Danny Ings and Michail Antonio to choose from when it comes to leading the line. And Ings' record doesn't exactly make for pretty reading, leading to links over a West Ham exit this month amid reported interest from Wolverhampton Wanderers. Meanwhile, Antonio's recent injury history has made for a frustrating watch, with the forward out with a knee issue since November.

The London club were perhaps hoping to solve their attacking problem with the arrival of a Bundesliga star. According to earlier reports, West Ham were in ongoing talks to sign Serhou Guirassy from Stuttgart and were stepping things up. Now, however, they could lose out to a Premier League rival. As per Pete O'Rourke of Football Insider, Manchester United could hijack West Ham's deal to sign Guirassy amid plans to make their move for the forward currently at AFCON.

Guirassy, of course, has a £15m release clause, which has seen the likes of AC Milan, United and West Ham all swarm in an attempt to land his signature. With such competition, it seems increasingly likely that Moyes will miss out on the Stuttgart star and face a battle to find the attacking depth that his side so desperately needs this month.

West Ham need to win race for "machine" Guirassy

If West Ham want to secure a permanent place in the Premier League's top six, then welcoming a striker capable of hitting 15-plus goals is crucial. A move to sign Guirassy would be ticking that box too, and it could allow Bowen to move out wide to form a deadly front three of Kudus, Bowen and the Bundesliga star. Guirassy's stats paint the picture of a player at the top of his game, with 19 goals in 16 games placing him among Germany's best in the current campaign. Opta Franz's post on X earlier this season summed up the forward's electric form:

It could speak volumes about just how far West Ham have come if they managed to beat Manchester United and AC Milan to Guirassy's signature either this month or during the summer transfer window. But as things stand, it looks likely that the Red Devils could hijack the Hammers' move in what may deal Moyes a frustrating blow courtesy of his former club.

Edu considering Chelsea hijack to sign marquee striker for Arsenal

Arsenal and sporting director Edu didn't take any action during the January transfer window, which is rumoured to be down to budget constraints and FFP worries, but the summer is likely to be very different.

Arsenal looking at 2024 summer signings

Manager Mikel Arteta publicly claimed that his side have one of the Premier League's thinnest squads recently, with the Spaniard revealing exactly why Arsenal were quiet compared to some of their big rivals like Tottenham.

Ray Parlour: Arsenal star is like Keown after what he did vs Liverpool

Speaking to FFC, Ray Parlour has compared the influence of one Arsenal player to Martin Keown.

ByMatt Dawson Feb 5, 2024

"We have one of the thinnest squads in the League, that's for sure," said Arteta on Arsenal's lack of winter signings (via Standard Sport).

"And when you talk about the numbers, especially in certain areas, we are really thin. It wasn't possible [to do any January deals]. And now we didn't have the capacity to improve the team in the way that we think we want to improve it, so we decided not to do something yet."

Arteta may have been exaggerating slightly when highlighting Arsenal's lack of depth in certain areas, but he could be proved right later this year when a few contracts are set to expire.

Both Jorginho and Mohamed Elneny are set to leave when their deals run out in June, as things stand, which would leave Arteta extremely short of depth in central midfield. Elsewhere in the squad, Gabriel Jesus and Eddie Nketiah stand out as Arsenal's only senior striker options. Club legend Ray Parlour has urged Arsenal to sign a new number nine on plenty of occasions this season as a result.

"I do think Arsenal need to strengthen up front as we had four top strikers in my day with Bergkamp, Henry, Wiltord, Kanu and also Jeffers would pop up with a few goals," said Parlour in January, exclusively to FFC.

"Arsenal have two main recognised strikers in Jesus and Nketiah. It’s very tough in January to get the striker you want, so I trust Edu and Mikel to get it right and maybe a loan could happen."

Once the summer rolls around, Arsenal will be in a position to spend more, especially if they pip both Liverpool and Man City to the title. It is believed they're in full transfer planning for the window already, and one centre-forward enticing their interest is Napoli star Victor Osimhen.

Edu considers Chelsea hijack to sign Osimhen

The Nigeria international signed a new deal earlier this season which includes a £111 million release clause, with the Gunners in contention to activate it.

That is according to reports in Spain, which suggest Arsenal "wants to steal" Osimhen from under Chelsea's nose as Mauricio Pochettino's side also look at signing him.

Edu and co are currently considering all variables before potentially signing the 25-year-old, who's been called "world-class" by Jose Mourinho and is the scorer of seven goals in just 13 Serie A appearances this season.

Underdogs? Can win regardless of breed – Williamson

New Zealand captain is happy to accept England should be seen as favourites

Andrew Miller at Lord's 13-Jul-2019Do you ever get the sense that no-one really rates you? To judge by the line of questioning on the eve of his biggest match in four years, Kane Williamson might have been excused for thinking that he had already lost the World Cup final (again). But, as he reflected on the truism that every under-dog has his day, New Zealand’s captain was at least happy to accept that England should be seen as favourites, and that they should therefore absorb all the pressure that comes with that status.”There’s a few more here today,” Williamson quipped as he took his place at pre-match press conference in the bowels of the Real Tennis court at Lord’s, to be quizzed on England’s strengths, New Zealand’s weaknesses, and what it would do to a team of self-evident nice guys to be cast in the role of nasty party-poopers.Everything and anything, in fact, apart from the prospect of actually going out there on Sunday and winning the damn thing on their own merit.”We are quite keen on winning as well,” Williamson protested with a smile at one stage, after another enquiry about how it would suit New Zealand to play without any expectations. “There’s all different bits of pressure on anybody, whether you are favourites or not.”

“Whatever dog we are, it’s just important that we focus on the cricket that we want to play and we have seen over the years that anybody can beat anybody regardless of breed of dog.”Williamson on the underdog tag

But broadly speaking, Williamson won’t care one jot if New Zealand are being written off before a ball has been bowled. It did them no harm in their thrilling semi-final win over India, after all -they had started the second day of that rain-interrupted contest with just 211 runs on the board from 46.1 overs – with many Indian fans and pundits already planning ahead for the final. And it’s done New Zealand little harm in a World Cup history in which no side other than Australia has won more matches than them in the course of 12 tournaments and 44 years.Addressing New Zealand’s underdog status, Williamson said: “A lot of people say that on a number of occasions, which is great and I think England rightly so deserve to be favourites. Coming into this tournament from the start, they were favourites and they’ve been playing really good cricket.Getty Images”But whatever dog we are, it’s just important that we focus on the cricket that we want to play and we have seen over the years that anybody can beat anybody regardless of breed of dog.”Anyone would think it was England who were playing in their second World Cup final in as many editions, with New Zealand the rank outsiders who were back in the big time for the first time in 27 years. However, Williamson was also careful to play along with their lack of expectation. Asked about New Zealand’s experience in that last final in 2015, when they ran into an Australian team on home soil with the bit between their teeth, he gave the impression that there had been few positive takeaways.”There’s a whole heap of different things, I suppose,” he said. “We were in a different part of the world on a different surface against a different opposition, and both sides are very different from four years ago, so it’s kind of hard to compare those times.”But I prefer winning than losing,” he added. “That is probably the best way to say it. Any experience that you have is an opportunity to learn and sometimes tough experiences, being on the wrong side of results, can slap you in the face and give you a glaring lesson, and if you ignore that, I don’t think that is a positive thing.”So treating both of those, the outcomes with respect and trying to learn from them to be better as a group and as an individual, I think is the best part.”Whether having had experience in a final or not is a good thing, any final you get the opportunity to play in is a really positive thing. But at the same time, as we know, in this game nothing promises, so it does come down to putting a performance on the board that gives us the best opportunity to win.”On New Zealand’s preferred game plan, of assessing the minimum total required for victory then fighting tooth-and-nail with the ball to defend it, Williamson praised his side for their adaptability, but warned that they’d have to get their calculations spot-on to see off an England team with proven matchwinners all down the order.”It is a challenge,” he said. “I think most teams expected scores to be a lot higher than what we have seen, but the reality of it is that they have been quite tough surfaces that have aged throughout the day, so trying to make those adjustments are really important.”I think if you are focussing on what you need to do as a group and the cricket that you want to play, then making those adjustments [is possible].”In the last game [the semi-final against India], I think both sides looked at the surface, thought it was a really good one, and thought perhaps 300 was what was going to be at play, but after 15 overs or so, we were having conversations thinking “This is really quite difficult and 300 looks like a long, long way away””So if we are able to perhaps achieve something a little bit more realistic on that surface, then that gives you every chance to win the matches.”We have done it on a number of occasions but we will have to be good at doing that tomorrow (Sunday). It is a new challenge for each occasion, where we will need to make those adjustments quickly.”

Somerset fly high as Jack Leach, Jamie Overton round up Nottinghamshire

If Nottinghamshire supporters ever need a new badge, they might consider Edvard Munch’s painting “The Scream”. It has sod all to do with cricket but it perfectly represents their current state of mind. However, one can scream in delight as well as fear so such an outburst also captures the mood of younger fans at Taunton. It certainly matched the emotions of Somerset’s cricketers just after six o’clock on this third evening when Jamie Overton sent Jake Ball’s off stump spinning to complete his county’s seventh win in nine games this season. In truth, it was tempting to pity Nottinghamshire as this match hurtled towards a climax which saw eight wickets fall after tea on what proved to be its final day. Steven Mullaney’s team played some decent cricket and when Somerset were 115 for 8 just after lunch, it was possible to see the visitors chasing down a target which then stood at 200.But Tom Abell’s side have acquired the knack of posting good totals, albeit by unorthodox means, and the ninth-wicket stand of 51 between Overton and Azhar Ali took the game beyond Nottinghamshire’s insecure batsmen, especially on a pitch helping the spinners. Azhar finished unbeaten on 65 while Overton’s 24 was a short innings which exhibited immense common sense in choosing which balls to attack. All this was rather in contrast to the morning session in which Somerset had collapsed to the spin of R Ashwin, one of the best twirlers in the world, and Liam Patterson-White, a 20-year-old debutant who had been ill on the first day on this game, made nought on the second, took five wickets on the third and ended it with Jamie Overton threatening his cerebellum with a cricket ball travelling at well over 80mph. I told you it gets better, Liam. Welcome to the show that ends only with autumn’s gentle beauty.None of which should make us underestimate the panic pullulating through the County Ground as Ashwin and Patterson-White ran amok. When Steven Davies was leg before to Ashwin’s drifter just before lunch Somerset were 94 for 6 and in some trouble. Yet for their supporters, no strangers to such alarums, this was only the latest reverse of a poor session. And so perhaps it is some variety of providence that ensures many cricket grounds are blessed with wonderful views. When Somerset collapsed on this blue morning at Taunton spectators in the upper stands could gaze on distant hills where a tablecloth of oatmeal and shy greens might have given them a moment of peace. Before long, though, the twin duties of love and loyalty caused them to lower their gaze and they saw James Hildreth caught at the wicket off Ashwin for 7 having charged down the wicket like a galloping Clydesdale. Hildreth might have been bowled or stumped but his dismissal was only the second in a decline which saw Somerset shamble to a lead of 179 when Davies was out. The regulars on Gimblett’s Hill, a coveted vantage point where only buttock recognition establishes a chap’s inalienable right to his seat, agreed this was not enough. They lunched muttering about lost opportunities. One could see their argument. Ashwin was stablished fast like a changeless decree at the Pavilion End and ended the innings with five wickets. Patterson-White match him and has kept the ball as a souvenir among a thousand other memories. The question now was whether a lead of 254 would be enough. And, of course, it was plenty. Jack Leach, having discovered the pace to bowl on this wicket, removed both Jake Libby and Ben Slater in his first three overs. Hildreth caught three fine catches at first slip, second slip and leg slip. At absolutely no stage of their innings did Mullaney’s side look like chasing down their target, although the skipper may have been unlucky to be given out caught off bat and pad when replays suggested only the latter was involved.Somerset’s bowlers had no time to care about such misfortunes. Their shrewd coach, Jason Kerr, has assembled the best squad of players in the country at the moment and if they need to be told what is needed to win titles, Jack Brooks is on hand to tell them. Notts were 35 for 3 when Tom Moores edged a lightning fast catch to Hildreth off Overton; 95 for 6 when Ashwin, having made 41 from No. 4, chipped Leach to George Bartlett at mid-on.The only question now was whether the game would finish on Tuesday or Wednesday. Overton decided he fancied a day off and bowled at a speed to move bowels. Patterson-White’s excellent adventure ended when his stumps were splattered. The extra half-hour was taken but Overton only needed an extra five minutes. Somerset lead the table by 15 points but have a tough test to come against Yorkshire next week.Yet Abell’s men have the wind at their backs. It has been the summer of “Blackbird” and of Tom Banton; the summer of golden combes and George Bartlett; the summer of “Do It For Tres” and Lewis Gregory. If things carry on like this, can you imagine what September will be like in Taunton? Oh my lovely, can you just imagine it!

Munoz starts alongside “complete” ace in predicted Palace XI vs Brighton

On Saturday, Crystal Palace will look to win consecutive Premier League games for the first time this season after beating Sheffield United 3-2 last time out.

Up next for the Eagles is their archrival, Brighton and Hove Albion, who suffered a huge 4-0 loss to Luton Town in the week.

The January transfer window has been busy for Roy Hodgson and his background team, with two new faces joining the side.

With that in mind, let's take a look at the side that could start at the Amex tomorrow, with four potential changes from the win over the Blades.

1 GK – Dean Henderson

dean-henderson-crystal-palace

Since returning from injury, Dean Henderson has started all of Palace's last six Premier League games, and he will start in between the sticks again this weekend.

2 RB – Daniel Munoz

Crystal Palace transfer target Daniel Munoz in action for Colombia.

The first change to the starting XI should see new signing Daniel Munoz replace Chris Richards, who played as a make-shift right back last time out.

The Colombian registered five goals and one assist for Genk this season before his move to England, and he will bring energy to the right side.

Crystal Palace could level up Olise with late January signing

Roy Hodgson is keen to secure a new right back this winter.

ByTom Lever Jan 28, 2024 3 CB – Joachim Andersen

Joachim Andersen

Joachim Andersen has started every game for the Eagles this season, playing every single minute.

His role at the heart of Palace's defence is vital, and he is guaranteed to start once again.

4 CB – Marc Guehi

Marc Guehi challenges Jarrod Bowen against West Ham United.

Palace's captain and Andersen's partner in crime, Marc Guehi, will continue to lead the side this weekend.

The 23-year-old is one of the untouchables in the side.

5 LB – Tyrick Mitchell

Tyrick Mitchell

A lack of competition and Tyrick Mitchell's consistency means he will start again this weekend.

The left-back has a goal and two assists to his name this season, and he will look to add to that against Brighton.

6 DM – Jefferson Lerma

Bournemouth midfielder Jefferson Lerma.

The second Colombian in the side is Palace's number eight, Jefferson Lerma.

The summer signing has played 17 times this season, and he will slot into the double pivot of a 4-2-3-1.

7 DM – Adam Wharton

Midfielder Adam Wharton celebrating for Blackburn Rovers.

The second new face is highly-rated Adam Wharton, who signed for £18.5m. There's no reason why the 19-year-old shouldn't start, and Will Hughes should make way for him.

Football Talent Scout Jacek Kulig has labelled him a "complete" midfielder, and he should bring attacking and defensive support tomorrow.

8 RW – Michael Olise

Hodgson will be thrilled to have Michael Olise back, and the winger is one of the most in-form players in the league.

The 22-year-old is Palace's second-highest scorer this season with six goals in all competitions, despite playing just ten games, and he will cause havoc on the right.

9 AM – Eberechi Eze

The second magician in the side is Eberechi Eze, who is guaranteed to start if fully fit – having been withdrawn due to a hamstring injury last time out.

Against the Blades, Eze netted two goals and made two key passes. He's the heartbeat of the side.

10 LW – Jeffrey Schlupp

Crystal Palace's Jeffrey Schlupp in action with Arsenal's Martin Odegaard andThomasPartey

Jordan Ayew featured last time out, but Jeffrey Schlupp could come into the side to provide more defensive support, which will be needed against Brighton.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

In the 2005 game, after the clash, United went on to win 4-2, and Vieira has now explained where the argument started. The former France international claims he was simply defending Robert Pires, whom he believed would be targeted by Neville during the game.

  • WHAT VIEIRA SAID

Speaking on the Stick To Football podcast, brought to you by Sky Bet, Vieira explained: "Because of the nine years I spent there, I didn't like you at all."

Jamie Carragher then asked: "Man United or Gary Neville?!"

To laughter from the panel, Vieira replied: "Gary Neville!"

While Neville brushed it off, Keane shook the hand of the World Cup winner, as he continued: "No but it's true, honestly, I couldn't stand you because you were just kicking everybody and especially Robert (Pires) when he was there… And in that game, I was just like, I have to make you aware that today, you're not going to touch Robert because I knew that was the plan for you because you struggled against Robert."

He concluded by claiming: "You were over the top against Robert."

Sunderland identify ex-Liverpool player as possible Jack Clarke replacement

Sunderland are interested in completing the signing of a "great player" as a possible replacement for Jack Clarke this month, according to an update from reliable journalist Alan Nixon.

Sunderland transfer news

The Black Cats find themselves in a poor run of form at the moment, with Michael Beale struggling to impress the masses after an uninspiring start. Friday's 1-0 defeat at home to Hull City saw some supporters already calling for his head, and new signings this month are needed to inject fresh life into Sunderland's Championship promotion push.

Notts County striker Macauley Langstaff has been backed to seal a move to the Stadium of Light, with the Englishman in sensational goalscoring form in recent years, while contact has also been made with former midfielder Yann M'Vila over a switch.

Bournemouth striker Kieffer Moore has emerged as a Sunderland transfer target, too, with the Welshman struggling to enjoy regular game time for the Cherries, and no doubt eyeing more minutes elsewhere. Leicester City's Luke Thomas has also been linked with bolstering the Black Cats' left-back options, so there are clearly lots of targets out there ahead during the January transfer window.

Sunderland want Liam Millar

According to Nixon on Patreon [via The 72], Sunderland are keen on signing on-loan Preston attacker Liam Millar, seeing him as an ideal potential replacement for Clarke.

Currently on loan from FC Basel, the 24-year-old is considered a primary target by the Black Cats, but only if the right offer comes in for Clarke, who they clearly want to keep hold of for as long as possible.

Retaining his services appears to be the priority for Beale, considering he is arguably the best player at the club currently, but if he does move on, Millar, a Canada international, could represent a strong option. Preston captain Alan Browne has hailed his quality as a player recently, saying:

"I don't think we've had someone similar to that, probably since (Aiden) McGeady in terms of one-v-one. We've had some pace and got past players that way, but to actually have that skill to go past a player – it's quite rare in football now actually. You don't see it as much; it's more tactical and powerful runners. But yeah, he is a great player and we have to make sure we keep getting an arm around him."

Millar, formerly on the books of Liverpool, made one appearance for the first team and featured 75 times for the Reds' Under-23s and Under-18s combined, so may have the pedigree of representing one of the biggest clubs in the country, as well as winning 24 caps for Canada.

Reliable reporter says Sunderland do want to sign "master" striker

He’s previously earned a nickname related to Erling Haaland.

ByDavid Comerford Jan 19, 2024

This season, the forward has eight goal contributions (three goals and five assists) in 16 Championship starts, also averaging 2.2 dribbles per match, and he could hopefully be a shrewd replacement for Clarke, should the worst happen and the current Sunderland ace find a new challenge.

Rob Keogh guides Northants second dig to keep Lancashire under the pump

Northants overcame a top-order wobble to build on their 127-run lead on first innings

ECB Reporters Network09-Jul-2019

Rob Keogh ensured Northamptonshire will enter the final day against Lancashire with a chance to press for victory at Wantage Road. Keogh made 74 from a tricky position to help Northants close day three on 210 for 6 in their second innings with a lead of 341.Keogh’s half-century, just his second of the season, was a vital innings after Northants slumped to 14 for 3 as they looked to build on a first-innings lead of 127. But Keogh, after a typically jittery start, settled well to flick and drive with good purpose. He struck seven boundaries in passing fifty in 97 balls and was helping his side make serene progress after tea before being run out, called through for a single by Adam Rossington that Keogh was hesitant to accept after nudging Stephen Parry to the right of short-midwicket. Haseeb Hameed dived to his right to field, throw at the non-striker’s end and Parry had the bails off before Keogh’s dive arrived. The dismissal stalled Northants, who with Keogh and Rossington had added 54 in 8.3 overs. Rossington was intent on scoring quickly and pulled Richard Gleeson over deep square for six in reaching 33 from 30 balls before losing his off stump to a beauty from Parry that gripped past his outside edge.Luke Procter and Brett Hutton made far more sedate progress to the close but swelled the lead with the help of a seven – Hutton’s edge to third man for three followed four overthrows. It left Northants pondering an overnight declaration – which would give them use of a second new ball if needed late on the final day.Initially, Lancashire mounted a fightback after lunch taking three wickets at the start of the Northants second innings inside five overs. Graham Onions and Gleeson tore in with the new ball. Onions swung one into the left-handed Ricardo Vasconcelos and nipped one back to the right-handed Richard Levi to win to lbws before Temba Bavuma drove Gleeson to point.Lancashire sensed a way back into the game but with Saqib Mahmood not taking the field, the change bowling posed a significantly less threat and Keogh set out making a smart recovery with Rob Newton, sharing a calming stand of 96 for the fourth wicket before Newton fell for 48 after tea, edging a cut at Gleeson to wicketkeeper Dane Vilas.Aside from the wobble, it was a fine day for Northamptonshire who, after a frustrating first hour, dismantled the Lancashire lower order, taking 5 for 25 with the second new ball. Alex Davies and Steven Croft extended their fifth-wicket partnership to 135 and Davies went past his previous first-class best of 140 but, to the final ball of the 80th over, miscued a pull against Keogh’s offspin and was held at short midwicket by Temba Bavuma for 147.An end was opened and Northants sensed an opportunity with a new ball in their hands. Steven Croft quickly fell, pinned lbw on the back foot by Ben Sanderson for a season’s best 78 before Hutton took the middle and off stumps of Parry out of the ground.Hutton struck again, having Mahmood caught at first slip for just 1 before Sanderson nipped one back to take an inside edge from Onions who made just 4. Gleeson then drove Hutton to provide Rossington with a second catch of the morning to hand Northants a 127-run lead and control of the match.
