Celtic could now sign "instant upgrade" Araujo for Rodgers in January

Celtic, barring a recent slip-up against Kilmarnock, have remained on course to win their third consecutive Scottish Premiership and their first since the return of Brendan Rodgers. Some at Celtic Park may have been fearing the beginning of their side's capitulation following their recent league defeat, but a 2-1 victory over Feyenoord in the Champions League has put an end to any concerns.

As things stand, the Hoops sit five points clear of Rangers, having played one more game. With the title still very much in the balance, Celtic may turn to the January transfer window to fix any glaring issues in Rodgers' squad. And that could see one specific winter target arrive.

Celtic transfer news

The exits of Ange Postecoglou and Jota stole the headlines in Scotland this summer before Celtic reacted by welcoming Rodgers back with open arms. The former Leicester City boss instantly hit the ground running too, creating some breathing room at the top of the league. As we head into the second half of the campaign, however, Rodgers arguably has some issues to address – ones that the transfer window could solve. When the winter window swings open, the Scottish champions could act once more.

Celtic stars Matt O'Riley and Luis Palma.

According to The Daily Mail's Stephen McGowan, there's a strong possibility that Celtic sign Estoril left-back Tiago Araujo. McGowan told PLZ:

"Tiago Araujo is a very strong possibility for Celtic in January. I suspect that is one that might happen."

It's no surprise that Celtic are looking to add defensive solidity to their side in January, given their firepower at the other end will be missing due to Kyogo Furuhashi potentially missing up to a month whilst playing for Japan at the Asia Cup. Given that Rangers could be as little as two points adrift of Celtic if they win their game in hand, Rodgers will want to ensure that his side remain solid in the Scottish Premiership – something that Araujo may help with.

Araujo would be an "instant upgrade"

Still, only 22 years old, Araujo is on the up and likely to get even better to potentially hand Rodgers an ideal upgrade. Araujo's stats show that he's already keeping up with current Celtic left-back Greg Taylor's stats in some areas, which could leave him in good stead if he secures a January move to Scotland's top-flight.

Araujo's impressive numbers make the praise that he has received no surprise, with Celtic Way writer Stewart Ross describing in his scout report, via X:

It certainly seems as though the "flamboyant" left-back – as he was described by talent scout Jacek Kulig – could be an ideal addition to Rodgers' side in January and as the window swings open, we may well see the deal take place if McGowan's claim proves accurate.

Alzarri Joseph's record-breaking 6 for 12 routs Sunrisers Hyderabad

First IPL match ever, 22-years-old Alzarri Joseph steamed in, bowled the tournament’s top run-scorer David Warner – off an inside edge – with his first delivery, and went on to have a debut beyond all fantasies. In defence of Mumbai Indians’ 136 for 7, which had only been made respectable by Kieron Pollard’s 46 not out off 26 balls, Joseph produced one of the great IPL bowling performances. He claimed 6 for 12, consistently rushing batsmen with his deceptive pace. Those figures broke an IPL record that had stood since the very first season, bettering Sohail Tanvir’s 6 for 14.

Joseph’s stunning IPL debut

  • Alzarri Joseph’s 6 for 12 are the best bowling figures in the IPL. The previous best was Sohail Tanvir’s 6 for 14 in the inaugural edition in 2008. The previous best on IPL debut was Andrew Tye’s 5 for 17, in 2017.

  • Sunrisers Hyderabad were dismissed for 96, which is their lowest total. Their previous lowest was 113, also against Mumbai Indians, in 2015

  • The 40-run defeat was the first loss for Mohammad Nabi in eight IPL matches.

  • Joseph also became the seventh bowler to take a wicket off the first ball of his debut IPL game, joining a list that includes Wilkin Mota, TP Sudhindra, Ali Murtuza, Amit Singh, Ishant Sharma and Dwaraka Ravi Teja

  • Joseph became only the second bowler to deliver a wicket-maiden in his first IPL over. Pat Cummins was the only other bowler to achieve this feat.

Despite being posed with a modest target, even if it was on a tricky home pitch, Sunrisers never got themselves moving. They lost their in-form openers inside the first five overs, and although several batsmen got starts, no one could push beyond 20. Joseph and Mumbai continued to take wickets, and the required rate ballooned. When Rashid Khan fell towards the end of the 15th over, with 49 to get off 25 balls and only three wickets left, the match was effectively sealed.2:05

Failed to capitalise on our good start – Bhuvneshwar Kumar

Joseph’s star turnHad Lasith Malinga been available, there is every chance Joseph would still be awaiting his IPL debut, but boy how he grabbed the opportunity. Joseph claimed two wickets off his first two overs, bowling David Warner off his inside edge with his first ever IPL ball, before having Vijay Shankar caught at point off a top edge soon after the Powerplay ended. His two wickets off successive deliveries in the 16th over, definitively swung the game in Mumbai’s direction. He bowled Deepak Hooda with a full, straight delivery, which the batsman inside-edged onto his stumps. Next ball, Rashid Khan was rushed into a pull shot, which the batsman could do no better than top edge – Joseph himself running through to take a simple chance. The final two wickets were almost just a bonus. Bhuvneshwar Kumar had his middle stump pegged back by another full, straight one. Four balls later, No. 10 batsman Siddarth Kaul was caught behind trying to run Joseph to third man. That Kaul wicket concluded the second excellent away result for Mumbai, who in the last two seasons had been infamously slow starters in the IPL. With this victory to follow the one against Chennai Super Kings on Wednesday, Mumbai have announced they are once again serious title contenders.Pollard’s manic finishFor so much of Mumbai’s own innings, it seemed as if they would not muster a competitive score. They had been a pathetic 5 for 65 after 12.5 overs – four of their top five batsmen having failed to score at a run-a-ball. Pollard, though, eased himself into his innings, hitting 9 off his first 13 balls, thanks to some good fortune (more on that later), before exploding in the 19th and 20th overs. He walloped the first ball of Siddarth Kaul’s final over over long off, before blasting one into the legside stand two balls later, then muscling another into the stand beyond long on two balls after that. Mumbai made 20 off that Kaul over, then 19 off the final one bowled by Bhuvneshwar Kumar, thanks again to some serious luck for Pollard.Alzarri Joseph wheels away in celebration after completing a five-for•BCCI

Sunrisers’ horror dropsVery rarely does Rashid Khan let a catch slip through his fingers, but he did so today, and wouldn’t you know it, it was Mumbai’s eventual top scorer that he reprieved. Pollard should have been out for 8 off 13 balls had Rashid held a straightforward chance at deep extra cover. He would go on to pummel 37 off 13 balls after the drop.According to ESPNcricinfo’s , the drop cost Sunrisers Hyderabad 21 runs, which very much looks like the difference between the two teams. To make things worse, Mohammad Nabi also dropped Pollard off the penultimate ball of the innings – palming the ball over the boundary to give him six, before Deepak Hooda at long off failed to stop a ball that deflected off his body for four.Mumbai’s support actsAlthough Joseph was easily the visitors’ best bowler, the attack actually put in an excellent performance between them. Jason Behrendorrf claimed 1 for 28 from his four overs, Jasprit Bumrah took 1 for 16 from his three, and Rahul Chahar had struck the first blow, removing Johnny Bairstow in the fourth over of the innings. Chahar finished with figures of 2 for 21, later removing Yousuf Pathan as well.

West Ham enter race to sign "complete" Premier League player for Moyes

If West Ham United's 0-0 draw against Brighton & Hove Albion proved anything, it is that they could do with some added firepower in the January transfer window. With Michail Antonio enduring injury problems and Danny Ings never really finding his form in a West Ham shirt, the responsibility has often been left down to Jarrod Bowen. And whilst the former Hull City man often delivers for the Hammers, David Moyes could do with a natural focal point to lead the line.

That said, reports suggest that those at the London Stadium have joined the race to sign a player who is actively competing for the Premier League's Golden Boot alongside Mohamed Salah and Erling Haaland this season.

West Ham transfer news

West Ham did well in the summer to spend the money gained from the sale of Declan Rice wisely. They swiftly replaced the England international with James Ward-Prowse and Edson Alvarez, before turning their attention to Mohammed Kudus and Konstantinos Mavropanos.

One position they did not strengthen, however, was the striker role, which should make it their priority this month. As Moyes' side compete for a place in the top six, an out-and-out goalscorer could make all the difference.

Bournemouth striker Dominic Solanke.

According to Seb Ecrivain Foot, West Ham have joined the race to sign Dominic Solanke and are discussing the feasibility of a potential deal. Solanke will reportedly be allowed to leave Bournemouth this month if a "financially serious offer" arrives, with Tottenham Hotspur and the Hammers chasing his signature.

Given that the Lilywhites are already reportedly in discussions over a fee, West Ham may need to act quickly if they are to beat their London rivals in the transfer market. If those at the London Stadium beat Spurs to a deal to sign Solanke, it would certainly be some statement of intent.

"Complete" Solanke has been alongside the very best this season

Barring Salah and Haaland, no player has scored more goals than Solanke's 12 in the Premier League this season. Sitting just two goals away from the Liverpool and Manchester City stars too, the Bournemouth star finds himself well and truly in a Golden Boot race.

Winning the award would undoubtedly be the highlight of Solanke's senior career so far, having bounced back from Chelsea and Liverpool failure to star at the Vitality Stadium. West Ham, of course, are well aware of Solanke's goals this season, given that he scored in a 1-1 draw against the Hammers this season.

Earning plenty of praise for his performances, Bournemouth boss Andoni Iraola had nothing but good things to say about Solanke earlier this season: “I think he’s really complete. He helps us without the ball, on the ball he can go, he’s good technically too. He can play well with his feet, he uses his body well, and if they leave him space at the back he can also exploit it. He had his chances, he scored, he hit the post, I think he was really dangerous and he helped his teammates a lot, so I’m really happy for him.”

Arsenal could repeat Martinelli masterclass by signing "flawless" £52m gem

The Premier League's winter break could not have come at a better time for Arsenal this season as, with three losses on the bounce, the Gunners looked like they were in freefall.

Much of the blame for their poor form has been laid at the feet of their frontline, which, considering they scored just one goal in those three games, is probably fair enough.

With this in mind, it shouldn't come as a surprise that Mikel Arteta and Co are now looking to sign some attacking reinforcements to lighten the load on their talented but misfiring front three, and the latest name touted for a move to N5 could replicate Gabriel Marinelli's journey while also providing Bukayo Saka with some much-needed competition.

Arsenal look to Brazil for their next superstar

According to a report from Spanish publication Mundo Deportivo earlier this week, Arsenal are keen on Brazilian wonderkid Estevão Willian and are 'willing to bid hard for him'.

Alongside the Gunners, the report mentions five other top sides interested in the promising prospect nicknamed 'Messinho': Paris Saint-Germain, Manchester City, Manchester United, Chelsea, and Barcelona.

While this competition is sure to complicate any deal for the 16-year-old, his reported release clause of £52m will only make things that much harder.

However, while it will take a lot of work from Edu and Co, and there is something to be said about spending that much money on a teenager, if he can follow in the footsteps of Martinelli and provide some genuine competition for Saka, he seems like a player worth pursuing.

How Estevão Willian could help Bukayo Saka

Now, the first thing to say is that with Saka being Arsenal's talisman, there is no way Estevão would come in and displace him right away, regardless of the Englishman's form, such is his importance to Arsenal.

However, what he could do is learn from the Hale End superstar, fill in for him in the less important games and then, after a few years or more, rival him for that starting spot on the right, pushing him to become an even better player than he is now.

This would mirror the path that Martinelli had to take when he joined the club in the summer of 2019 from Ituano Futebol Clube, as it took the then 18-year-old four years to start over 30 league games in a season for the north Londoners, although it might have come sooner for the dynamic attacker had he not suffered a serious knee injury in 2020.

That said, the "world-class talent", as described by football talent scout Jacek Kulig, already has some impressive numbers to his name despite being just 16 years old.

For example, he has already made his debut in Brazil's Serie A, and he has been a sensation for Palmeiras' U20s, scoring six goals and providing three assists in just 19 appearances.

However, where he has shone brightest and put himself in the shop window more than anywhere else was at the U17 World Cup last year.

With Brazil's U17 side, the "flawless" gem, as described by U23 scout Antonio Mango, truly made a name for himself, registering the most assists, crosses, attempts at goal, sprints and presses in the entire team.

At the end of the day, Saka is the undisputed starter on Arsenal's right-hand side and likely will be for quite some time; however, signing an exciting prospect who Mango described as having "creativity a genius would be proud of" as his understudy would be brilliant planning for the future.

Arsenal could sign the next Odegaard in "special" £43m sensation

The 20-year-old could add some extra flair to Arsenal’s midfield.

ByJack Salveson Holmes Jan 19, 2024

If Kulig's prediction that "the sky is the limit" for the young Bazilian's potential is correct, the hope will be that he can follow in the footsteps of Martinelli – who has 59 goals and assists in 154 games for the club – by flourishing at the Emirates.

PCB board meeting abandoned as five members demand MD Wasim Khan removal

A schism within the PCB Board of Governors erupted in Quetta today, leading to five BoG members demanding the removal of PCB Managing Director Wasim Khan, and walking out of the meeting, forcing its adjournment. The 53rd meeting of the PCB BoG, notable for being the first to be held in Quetta, was attended by eight of its ten members.Fve of them – Shahraiz Rokri from Lahore, Noman Butt from Sialkot, Shah Dost from Quetta, Kabir Khan from Fata and KRL’s Ayaz Butt – presented a resolution not initially on the agenda of the meeting. It listed six demands they wanted the BoG to adopt, most notably the appointment of Wasim to be declared null and void, terming the position unconstitutional. The resolution also called for the rejection of any move to abolish departments and regions in domestic cricket, and the setting up of a domestic cricket restructuring committee within the next 10 days, comprising all four members of the four regions.A PCB statement said, “The meeting was then adjourned for a brief period pursuant to five members attempting to table a resolution, which was not part of the agenda. The PCB Chairman had proposed any business other than the agenda could be considered under Any Other Items at the end of the meeting. However, the Khan Research Laboratory (KRL) and the four regional representatives refused to return to complete the meeting.”PCB chairman Ehsan Mani, who, along with Asad Ali Khan and Ex-Officio Akbar Durrani, was the only remaining BoG member present, declared himself “hugely disappointed”, warning that Pakistan cricket must not “get derailed by personal agendas”.”I was looking forward to an interactive, productive and constructive discussion, which was aimed at taking Pakistan cricket forward. Yesterday, we called on the honourable Chief Minister of Balochistan and engaged in fruitful and enlightening discussions to promote cricket in Balochistan. It is, therefore, particularly disappointing that the representative from Balochistan also refused to return for the BoG meeting.”Leicestershire chief executive Wasim Khan•PA Photos

The abandonment of the meeting poses a potential broader problem for the PCB. One of the items on the agenda was the approval of audited accounts for 2017-18 to be sent to the ICC, which form the basis of the ICC releasing Pakistan’s share of revenue for the year. That, ESPNcricinfo understands, amounts to USD 5 million, and with the failure to approve the release of audited accounts, that funding could be delayed. The threat of a delay isn’t acute for now though if divisions linger on, it could become pressing. At least part of that money would be spent on regional cricket associations, some of whom walked out of the meeting.Board officials expressed frustration at the demand to oust Wasim, whose arrival was seen as something of a coup for the board, particularly since he had been asked by the ECB to apply for a similar position. In October, the BoG approved the creation of the position of managing director, aimed at separating the positions of chief executive and chairman. Under the current PCB set-up, the chairman is also its chief executive, which was seen as a conflict of interest. However, a separate position for chief executive requires a constitutional amendment, and on that basis, the BoG approved the search for a managing director, who would assume the role of chief executive once the position was created. It was then the PCB began shortlisting candidates for the position, finally settling on Wasim.

The saga has an unmistakeable realpolitik whiff. The current prime minister and patron of the board Imran Khan has been vocal about his intentions to downgrade and, if possible, completely eliminate departments in domestic cricket. It was notable that a guarantee against that was the first item on the proposals the five dissenting members moved. Just three weeks ago, Imran Khan had given short shrift to a new model the PCB proposed that still aimed to retain departments in domestic cricket, insisting they had no role in the game.Mani and Imran Khan are scheduled to meet later this week to discuss issues related to the infrastructure development of the Pindi cricket stadium, which is owned by the province of Punjab rather than the PCB. With the ground being looked at as a potential venue for the next edition of the PSL, its dereliction was a cause for urgent concern. However, with half the BoG membership rejecting the patron’s explicit demands with respect to departmental involvement in the domestic game, it seems hard to believe that will not be a key item of discussion when the pair meet.

Rahmat, Naib, Rashid given leadership roles in Afghanistan revamp

The overhaul marks the end of Asghar Afghan’s long stint as the captain across formats

Asghar Afghan’s four-year stint as captain of the Afghanistan team across the three formats has come to an end, with the Afghanistan Cricket Board ushering in a new leadership era with Rahmat Shah, Gulbadin Naib and Rashid Khan taking charge of the Test, ODI and T20I teams respectively.Rashid, the face of Afghanistan cricket globally, will also be the vice-captain of the ODI side, while Hashmatullah Shahidi will be the deputy of the Test team, with Shafiqullah performing the role for the T20I side. All the three new captains are under 30 – Rashid is 20, Rahmat 25 and Naib 28 – suggesting a long-term vision; Afghan turned 31 in December last year.According to Azizullah Fazli, the ACB chairman, the changes will provide opportunities to young captains, who are the future of the game in the country. He told ESPNcricinfo, “The World Cup provides us with the opportunity to play against nine Full Members. So we thought it is a good time to introduce change in leadership.”Fazli stressed that Afghan would continue to be a part of the national squad as a senior player who can mentor the new captains. Afghan replaced Mohammad Nabi as the captain immediately after the 2015 World Cup.Asghar Afghan led Afghanistan through a crucial phase in their cricketing journey•Getty Images

Under his captaincy, Afghanistan played 56 ODIs, 46 T20Is and two Test matches. Crucially, he led the team in its historic maiden Test match, against India in June 2018, and more recently to their first Test win, against Ireland. Two of the major architects of the victory over Ireland were Rahmat and Rashid. Rahmat cracked two match-turning half-centuries, while Rashid finished with a match haul of seven wickets including a crucial five-for in Ireland’s second innings.Of the three new captains, Rashid is the only one with any major captaincy experience. He has been a part of the leadership group anyway, and led Afghanistan in four matches – they lost three of them – at the World Cup qualifiers in Zimbabwe last year while Afghan was indisposed. Rashid, currently playing in the IPL for Sunrisers Hyderabad, has also led Band-e-Amir Dragons and Kabul Zwanan 16 times in T20 cricket, with ten wins and six defeats.Rahmat, meanwhile, has no experience of leadership at first-class level, though he has led the Mis Ainak region four times in List A cricket, losing all four matches. Naib, too, is an inexperienced leader, having led on just two occasions in first-class cricket and nine times in List A cricket for two different teams – the Boost region and the Mis Ainak region.
