GOL DO VITÓRIA NO COMEÇO DO PRIMEIRO TEMPO

Felipe Conceição e Rodrigo Chagas fizeram todas as substituições possíveis no duelo.

Arsenal’s "star man" vs PSV just proved a big point to Mikel Arteta

Arsenal's clash with PSV Eindhoven in the final gameweek of this year's UEFA Champions League group stage was never going to be an enthralling clash.

The Gunners had already qualified for the round of 16 having topped the group and their Dutch opponents on the night weren't going to be moved from second place.

Therefore, a 1-1 draw on Tuesday evening felt about right. These have been the two best sides in the group and it was unsurprising that nothing could separate them, particularly after an understrength side was fielded by Mikel Arteta.

Rare starts were handed to the likes of Aaron Ramsdale – who made his Champions League debut – to Cedric and Mohamed Elneny too. Sadly, the academy stars on the bench – Ethan Nwaneri, Reuell Walters and Lino Sousa weren't afforded any minutes.

Arteta would have to call on Martin Odegaard and Declan Rice late on but a win couldn't be snatched away from their visit to the Netherlands.

How Arsenal's fringe players performed against PSV

Truth be told, there weren't any awful performers from an Arsenal perspective in midweek. Cedric, who was making just his second appearance of the campaign was actually quite impressive. More often than not the right-back was composed and measured in his play. Will he earn any further minutes this term? It feels unlikely but it was a steady showing nonetheless.

Elneny's return to starting action was unfortunately curtailed by an injury but Ramsdale looked a great deal more confident than he has in his other outings since being displaced by David Raya.

GK – Ramsdale

7/10 – a return to form for the goalkeeper

RB – Cedric

6/10 – steady but unspectacular

CB – Saliba

6/10 – not the Frenchman's finest night but solid nonetheless

CB – Gabriel

7/10 – made a goal-saving block in the first half

LB – Kiwior

5/10 – was given a rough night by PSV star Bakayoko on the left

CM – Elneny

6/10 – steady and composed; you know what you're getting from the Egyptian

CM – Jorginho

6/10 – another steady but unspectacular display. Not bad from the Italian.

CM – Havertz

6/10 – Arsenal's POTM for November failed to show his true colours

RW – Nelson

9/10 – by far Arsenal's best player. Created the goal and looked lively.

LW – Trossard

6/10 – struggled to get into the game.

ST – Nketiah

8/10 – a strong performance from the forward who took his goal really well.

Eddie Nketiah had a fine night too, registering his first Champions League goal to take his tally for the season in all competitions to six strikes.

His goal was supplied by Reiss Nelson, a man who more than proved he's got what it takes to play more often in this Arsenal team.

How Reiss Nelson performed against PSV

At the age of 24 it's rather incredible that Nelson has only ever started ten league matches for the club.

You have to wonder, therefore, why he signed a new deal over the summer. Was his last-gasp goal against Bournemouth still playing in his mind? Quite possibly.

Either way, the draw with PSV showed that we need to show a great deal more respect to Nelson who has a supreme amount of quality.

Described as Arsenal's "star man" on the night by journalist Charles Watts, he was in particularly lively spirits during his visit to the Netherlands. Always keen to get on the ball, the Englishman even popped up in central areas late in the game as he tried to engineer a spark to win Arsenal the clash.

Arteta loves a duel winner and that's what he had in Nelson who came away from the clash having won a staggering 12 duels from 16 contests.

That was largely comprised of five successful dribbles, the most on the pitch, and six successful tackles. Yep, you read that right. Six successful tackles from an offensive player – this was a performance not just dazzling in attacking intent but full of hard work too.

Nelson also left the field with a 95% pass success rate, misplacing the ball just twice.

Of course, breaking into a starting lineup possessing Bukayo Saka and Gabriel Martinelli is no easy task but the winger undoubtedly deserves and needs more game time. As he showed last term, he can more than make an impact when required. He's passed your big test, Arteta, now it's over to you.

Jadeja was fit when picked for Australia tour – MSK Prasad

MSK Prasad said that in a fitness report presented at the time of selection, Ravindra Jadeja was found to be “absolutely fit” and was hence picked for the Australia tour

MSK Prasad, India’s chairman of selectors, has added to the intrigue around the non-selection of Ravindra Jadeja in the Perth Test by saying Jadeja was “absolutely fit” when picked for the Australia tour. He neither confirmed nor denied if he was apprised of Jadeja’s fitness by the team management.India went into the Perth Test without a spinner, a selection that was widely criticised by former players, including Sunil Gavaskar. Virat Kohli said he picked four quicks because the conditions demanded that, and that even a fit R Ashwin would have struggled to make it to the XI. However, coach Ravi Shastri said Jadeja was not picked because he had not been 100% fit. Shastri said Jadeja had taken an injection just before he flew to Australia, and four days after landing in the country. He also said Jadeja was only 70-80% fit in Perth before going on to add he would be picked in Melbourne if he is 80% fit. Jadeja was named in India’s XI for the Boxing Day Test.”On the eve of any selection meeting, the selection committee is given a fitness report of all the players,” Prasad told reporters in Melbourne. “In that report, Jadeja was absolutely fit. So we picked him. After we picked him, he went and played Ranji Trophy also, he bowled 60 overs [64, against Railways]. So there is no question of him being unfit at the time of selection.”Prasad was asked if he was aware of Jadeja taking the injections before and during the tour, but he was non-committal. “Yes, it is a process,” Prasad said when asked if he was aware of the first injection. “Whenever a health issue comes up, we have a group in which it is being placed.”Asked about the second injection, Prasad said: “All that is looked after by the physio, and they have very clearly given it in the statement.”The statement being alluded to is the BCCI media release, which said Jadeja was given injections on November 2 and November 30. However, whenever the BCCI updated the media on the fitness status of players, Jadeja was never mentioned. Even when asked if all other players were fit, when there were doubts around Ashwin and Rohit Sharma, there was no response. The diagnosis and handling of injuries by India has come under fair bit of criticism. Prithvi Shaw, who had twisted his ankle in the warm-up game, stayed around the team for two Tests before he was sent home, which arguably denied Mayank Agarwal acclimatisation time. Agarwal is set to open the innings in Melbourne. In England, Bhuvneshwar Kumar aggravated an injury in an ODI right before the start of the Test series. He is yet to play a Test after that. Wriddhiman Saha, who according to Prasad, missed out on England selection because of a thumb injury, has now sat out the whole year with what actually was a pretty serious shoulder injury.

Captain Joe Root calls on Joe Denly to seize the day in second Test

England captain Joe Root has challenged Joe Denly to seize the moment after being named to make his debut in the second Test against West Indies in place of axed opener Keaton Jennings.Root confirmed Denly would come into the side for the match in Antigua starting on Thursday with England trailing 1-0 after a comprehensive 381-run defeat inside four days in Barbados.”It’s disappointing for Keaton, he’s done some very good things and he’ll continue to keep developing,” Root said. “He’s very much a part of this squad moving forward but it’s a great opportunity for Joe to show what he’s capable of.”At 1-0 down in the series I feel it’s proactive to change things up at the top of the order.”Fast bowler Stuart Broad, controversially left out of the team for the first Test, comes into England’s 12-man squad, as does spinner Jack Leach, with Adil Rashid granted permission to return home for the birth of his second child after being omitted from the final XII. Rashid claimed 0 for 117 in 26 overs during the first Test.Pressed on whether Broad would play, Root said: “We’ll wait and see, won’t we?””Stuart adds an extra seam option and if we were to play two spinners it’s a change of mentality and approach of the spinners, having a more controlled bowler like Leachy,” Root said.”It’s not necessarily a reflection on how Adil has gone about things. When he comes into the side you want him to make things happen and take wickets, to show off all of his tricks. On balance we think a slightly different approach might be more effective here.”Root said Jennings’ omission was by no means final.”He is someone who is always developing, constantly improving his game,” Root said. “It’s been a tricky start for him over here and he’ll be disappointed to miss out but he’s got a very good attitude.”I’m sure he’ll go away, work on his game, keep looking to improve. I definitely don’t think it’s the end for him. He is doing all the right things. He felt he might not have been far away but the position we’re in in this series… we’re out here to win. We’re not here to look forward to the Ashes.”Root was similarly open-minded about Denly’s future, meaning England’s search for a long-term opening pair is by no means over.”We have to keep a pretty open mind,” Root said. “He’s definitely got an opportunity to show what he’s capable of. He’s obviously worked extremely hard, impressed on the two tours he’s been on. Hopefully he can continue the fine form he had last year for Kent.”Denly, 32, returned to the international limited-overs arena in 2018 after an eight-and-a-half-year hiatus. He was also named Professional Cricketers’ Association Players’ Player of the Year after an outstanding season in all formats for Kent, where he scored 1729 runs and took 57 wickets.Root believes his side is “more than capable” of bouncing back from their dismal performance in Bridgetown and, just as Denly is in a prime position to make the most of the opportunity presented to him, Root expects Broad to make the most of his chance, should he play at North Sound.”No-one likes being left out. Especially someone as experienced as him,”Root said. “I expect him to come back and try and prove a point.”He’s someone who can be quite stubborn sometimes and likes to prove people wrong. That’s a very good strength of his and something that can work in our favour.”

Justin Langer admits to sleepless nights leading up to Brisbane Test

The Australia coach was anxious for his team to not spoil their enviable Brisbane record, and also about how Kurtis Patterson’s late inclusion would be received

It says a lot about the challenges Justin Langer has faced in his short time as Australia coach that he admitted to having sleepless nights ahead of the Gabba Test against Sri Lanka, knowing the pressure the team were under not to be beaten at a ground that has become a banker for victory.Langer also worried about how the decision to parachute Kurtis Patterson into the squad three days before the Test, then hand him a debut ahead of Will Pucovski, would be received in a season where Australia’s selectors have often appeared confused and uncertain. In the end, neither of Langer’s fears came to pass with the team securing an innings-and-40-run win to maintain an unbeaten record in Brisbane which dates back to 1988, and though Pucovski’s omission sparked debate Patterson looking at home on debut with a neat 30 and four catches, the last of which was a blinder in the gully to remove Dilruwan Perera.”I kept thinking before the game, imagine if we get beaten by Sri Lanka at the Gabba. That’s why I haven’t slept much the past week. Hopefully I’ll sleep a bit easier tonight,” Langer said.He knew the late inclusion of Patterson, following his twin hundreds in the tour match, would divide opinion especially as it meant 20-year-old Pucovski was sidelined once the experience Joe Burns was also preferred in the final XI.”We decided and it was controversial. To see how it would be received from the public picking someone from outside the [squad], spoke to a few people I trusted about it and we just felt it was a really common sense thing to do. You agonise more probably at this point of the season about what’s going to get reported on, if I’m completely frank. Hopefully I’ll get tougher over the years that way and won’t think about that.”He got 100 in both innings against Sri Lanka and you talk about rewarding performance. So when it came down to that, although we’d selected the squad before, I was really glad we had the courage to have that flexibility and bring someone in from outside that original squad.”ALSO READ: Present tense but future can be perfect for Tim Paine’s young AustraliaLanger gave a strong endorsement to an unchanged XI for the second Test in Canberra – although he was speaking before Marcus Stoinis’ call-up was confirmed and did say conditions would have to be assessed – which means Pucovski will likely have to wait his turn. The 166-run stand between Marnus Labuschagne and Travis Head was Australia’s highest since the final Test of the 2017-18 Ashes and has earned the pair some breathing space even though both missed hundreds.”Marnus and Travis Head’s partnership was significant. Both threw away an opportunity to score 100s,” Langer said. “The best way to learn how to make hundreds is to make hundreds, so they know they missed an opportunity yesterday. I thought Kurtis Patterson looked like a Test batsman.”Though it was pace bowling which dominated the Test, Langer was impressed by the work of Labuschagne and Head against spin on a surface which offered turn and bounce.”More than just the runs, [Marnus] had good footwork, he plays spin really well. I thought he played the spin so well. He plays almost like an Indian batsman, he gets back, uses his feet, and uses his hands [to get the ball] into gaps, uses the sweep shot well, gets down the wicket.”I think Heady hit one loose shot and it was almost like, ‘oh snap, that’s right, everything I’ve been talking about’… and then he let the ball come to him and he looked like a really good Test player. The thing that’s most impressive about Travis is how he keeps learning, keeps getting better. The way he’s playing spin from a year ago, his forward defence against offspin, the way he’s able to come down the wicket, he’s improving all the time and that’s all you can ask for.”There was also backing from Langer for the struggling senior pair of Usman Khawaja and Mitchell Starc. Khawaja fell for 11, bowled for the third time in the last three balls he’d faced from Dilruwan Perera in Test cricket. Starc managed his 200th Test but he was the least impressive of the attack following on from an underwhelming finish to the India series.”I suppose there’s high expectation on Mitchell but he’s a very good player and is really important for our team. Same with Usman. He still averages 40 in Test cricket. He’s our most experienced player. He’s very calm. He brings a lot of calmness and composure and experience to the group, so we’re happy with the way he’s going at the moment.”

'Frustrated' Nottingham Forest striker Chris Wood responds to club's controversial statement following Everton VAR debacle

Nottingham Forest star Chris Wood has given his take on the club's controversial statements criticising the officiating in the defeat to Everton.

Everton beat Nottingham Forest 2-0Reds complain about officiatingWood weighs in on controversyWHAT HAPPENED?

Following Forest's 2-0 loss to relegation rivals Everton on Sunday, the club posted on X, formerly Twitter, that they should have been given three penalties by referee Anthony Taylor and VAR official Stuart Attwell – who is allegedly a Luton Town supporter. Sky Sports pundit Gary Neville said the post was "like a mafia gang statement", with the Tricky Trees reportedly considering whether or not to take legal action over those remarks. Now, striker Wood has weighed in on the matter.

AdvertisementGetty ImagesWHAT CHRIS WOOD SAID

He told the Telegraph: "We were all angry after the game, upset and frustrated. I think a lot of clubs have had a lot [of bad decisions] but I do think we’ve had more than our fair share this season – more than we did last season. Everybody will complain about VAR in some ways but ultimately we have had a lot [go against us]. We can’t make the decisions, we can only control what happens on the pitch and how we play. It’s unfortunate but we parked it the following day. We’ve got four games left in quick succession and we can’t be down about it. We need to get focused and go again.”

When asked about the club's reaction to the decisions that went against them, he added: “I can understand the frustration, definitely. What they put out is down to them, and that’s their words. There was frustration from a lot of people, but it’s up to the club.”

THE BIGGER PICTURE

Forest took extra umbrage with the officiating as they are just one point above the bottom three, leaving them in a relegation dogfight with Luton Town and Burnley. Moreover, they were docked four points for breaching financial rules, something they are appealing, so it may feel like the walls are closing in on the Reds.

Burnley boss Kompany now lining up "amazing" Che Adams in cut-price swoop

Burnley boss Vincent Kompany will be aware that his side need to improve if they have designs on avoiding relegation from the Premier League and the Belgian has now lined up a cut-price January swoop at Turf Moor, one he believes could transform their season.

Burnley's Premier League struggles continue

Despite winning the Championship at a canter last year, Burnley always knew that the Premier League would be an uphill battle to regularly gain results in and that has proved to be the case, with Kompany's men second-bottom of the divisional standings and just above Sheffield United on goal difference.

Last week, their 2-0 defeat at home to Everton made it 13 league defeats in 17 fixtures so far for the Clarets. Their only two victories this campaign have come against Luton Town and Sheffield United. At the same time, draws against Nottingham Forest and Brighton & Hove Albion have offered some brief respite in a gruelling campaign for all involved at the club.

Burnley line up January offer to sign powerful new player

He’s not in the first-team picture at his current club…

BySean Markus Clifford Dec 17, 2023

Delivering his post-match analysis after his side's defeat to Sean Dyche's Toffees last Saturday, Burnley manager Kompany lamented his players' inability to deal with set-piece situations, stating cited by The Liverpool Echo: "Teams have all got strategies and little things they do to create an advantage on set-plays, depending on the quality of the delivery and the players’ ability to attack it. We know Everton are one of the best teams in the league at doing that – credit to them."

He then added: "It is part of the game – you don’t get to hide away from it, you don’t get to be good at some things and not at others but [if you like your] game is undone by something that you are not giving yourself a chance with, that is never a good feeling."

Looking ahead to January, Kompany has now reportedly identified someone who could add some firepower up the other end of the pitch as he bids to save Burnley's top-flight status.

Burnley keen on Che Adams deal

According to TEAMtalk, Burnley are lining up a cut-price move for Southampton forward Che Adams, who could be available on the cheap as he is out of contract on the South Coast in the summer of 2024. The Saints are reluctant to lose the Scotland international in January, though are aware that he could leave at the end of the campaign for free.

Adams himself is open to the idea of returning to the Premier League and is high on the wanted list at Turf Moor, with Kompany acknowledging that bringing in the striker could be season-changing as the Clarets battle relegation. The former Manchester City defender is drawn to the 27-year-old's previous top-flight experience and would be enticed by the fact he is available for a modest fee.

Labelled "amazing" for his selfless mentality by boss Russell Martin, Adams has featured 19 times for Southampton this campaign across all competitions, registering four goals and two assists (Adams statistics – Transfermarkt).

Burnley could do with some extra options in the final third and Adams is a hard-working capable forward who could help to stretch defences with his pace and eye for the target.

Kyogo misses out in Celtic predicted lineup vs Hearts

Celtic are back in Scottish Premiership action this afternoon as they play host to Hearts at Parkhead in Glasgow off the back of their success in midweek.

The Hoops ended their European campaign on a high as they beat Feyenoord 2-1 at home, after they failed to win any of their first five matches in the Champions League group phase.

Brendan Rodgers' side picked up the three points, although it did nothing to change the standings as they finished bottom, thanks to goals from Luis Palma and Gustaf Lagerbielke.

They now take on Hearts at Paradise and will be hoping to bounce back from last weekend's 2-1 defeat to Kilmarnock as they attempt to avoid another domestic slip-up.

Here is FFC's predicted XI to take on Steven Naismith's side as Rodgers could make three changes from the starting line-up that secured a win against Feyenoord.

1 Joe Hart

Celtic goalkeeper Joe Hart.

Starting off between the sticks, Rodgers could stick with the tried and trusted experience of Joe Hart. He has kept six clean sheets in 16 Premiership matches so far this season.

2 Alistair Johnston

Celtic defender Alistair Johnston.

Another player who could keep his place in the team is right-back Alistair Johnston, who has been a reliable performer at the back throughout the campaign.

The Canada international has made 13 Premiership appearances this season and caught the eye with a fantastic display in spite of Celtic's loss against Kilmarnock, as he made a miraculous goal line block during the first half.

3 Gustaf Lagerbielke

The first change to the starting XI could come with Gustaf Lagerbielke being unleashed at the heart of the defence in place of Stephen Welsh.

Signed in the summer, the Swedish titan has had to bide his time in recent months but grasped his opportunity with both hands against Feyenoord on Wednesday night.

Welsh was forced off with 15 minutes to play and put in a remarkable cameo to help the Hoops to secure their first win of the group stage.

Lagerbielke won 100% (3/3) of his duels, made two interceptions, and won a superb last-man tackle to prevent Hart's goal from being troubled.

However, his defining moment came at the other end as the Bhoys ace, who was hailed as "exciting" by Rodgers upon his arrival, scored the winning goal on the night.

He was in the right place at the right time to nod the ball into the back of the net at the far post and Celtic could look to channel the momentum that could bring him by unleashing the defender from the start this afternoon.

4 Liam Scales

Liam Scales in action for Celtic.

Next to Lagerbielke, Liam Scales could keep his place on the left side of the central defensive pairing after an impressive performance on Wednesday.

He won eight of his nine duels, completed seven clearances, and won the penalty from which Palma scored the opening goal, in the 90 minutes.

5 Greg Taylor

Celtic defender Greg Taylor.

At left-back, Scotland international Greg Taylor could be trusted again. He has started all 17 of the club's league matches so far this season, which suggests that the defender has the full faith of the manager ahead of back-up option Alexandro Bernabei.

6 Callum McGregor

Celtic midfielder Callum McGregor.

Starting off in midfield, Callum McGregor should start and captain the side as one of Rodgers' three maestros in the middle of the park.

The Scotland international, like Taylor, has started every Premiership game for the Hoops and there is no obvious reason as to why that would change today.

7 David Turnbull

The second alteration to the XI could come in midfield after Tomoki Iwata came off with a knock against Feyenoord, which could open the door for David Turnbull to take his place.

Celtic's Scottish magician has showcased his attacking prowess in the Premiership so far this season with a return of seven goals and four 'big chances' created in eight starts.

The 24-year-old whiz is a terrific talent at the top end of the pitch who has the quality to be a difference-maker in the final third for the club.

Whereas, Iwata has zero goals and one key pass in his last three appearances, which have all been as a starter, for Celtic in all competitions.

8 Matt O'Riley

Celtic'sMattO'Riley

Matt O'Riley could complete the set in midfield as the Danish dynamo has been in scintillating form for the Scottish giants so far this term.

He has contributed with an eye-catching nine goals and five assists in 16 league appearances, which shows that the former MK Dons star has the quality to chip in with match-changing or winning goal contributions on a regular basis from a midfield position.

9 Michael Johnston

Celtic winger Michael Johnston.

On the right of the attack, Michael Johnston could keep his place in the XI after a solid performance out wide against Feyenoord on Wednesday night.

The winger created two chances for his teammates and completed 88% of his attempted passes in 68 minutes on the pitch, which could keep him in the side.

10 Hyeon-gyu Oh

The third and final change to the line-up could see Hyeon-gyu Oh return to the starting XI in place of Japan international Kyogo Furuhashi.

Rodgers handed the former Vissel Kobe star an opportunity to stake a claim for his position with a start against Feyenoord but he failed to take it.

Kyogo lost 100% (2/2) of his duels and only completed three passes in 68 minutes on the pitch, whilst he also missed one 'big chance'.
