Newcastle could save Longstaff by ditching plans to sign £45m talent

Newcastle United have carried over last season's emphatic form and are now cementing their position of power at the upper end of the Premier League table, but Eddie Howe is already planning for improvements.

Who are Newcastle interested in signing in January?

Having spent lucratively over the past several transfer windows, Newcastle have succeeded in building a team capable of breaking the power dynamic in the English top-flight, securing a fourth-placed finish last season, but there is still work to be done and Howe appears to have placed an emphasis on the central midfield.

Indeed, Emile Smith Rowe's name has been touted, with the creative Arsenal midfielder sitting on the fringe with the north London side, with the Northern Echo reporting that a January move has been discussed.

Manchester City midfielder Kalvin Phillips.

He's not the only rival midfielder to be linked with a move to St. James' Park, with Manchester City's Kalvin Phillips set to leave the Etihad Stadium after scant match action, and Newcastle are among the suitors.

The England international wishes to remain with the English champions but, as the Daily Mail claims, the Magpies and Everton are interested and could now save his nightmare in obscurity.

Why hasn't Kalvin Phillips played much at Man City?

City completed the £45m transfer of Phillips from Leeds United – where he had risen through the youth ranks – in July 2022, with Pep Guardiola compensating for the loss of stalwart Fernandinho.

In all honesty, it was a deal that had its caveats from the off, with Phillips yielding an unwanted injury record and Manchester City's existing midfield options providing more than a testing task in cementing a starting berth.

And unfortunately for Phillips, that ordeal festered into a scorching baptism of fire, having played just 21 times and earned only two Premier League starts, leading the FWA's Tom McDermott to brand the move a “waste”.

This season, he has made five appearances thus far but has only earned one start, coming during an injury-hit spell for his side against Newcastle United in the Carabao Cup – doing himself no favours at the centre of a 1-0 defeat.

Manchester City midfielder Kalvin Phillips.

Now, Phillips is a talented midfielder and of course, boasts attributes that would bolster Newcastle's squad, but given he has missed 34 matches across the past two campaigns due to injury and is displaying the last vestiges of his former vigour at Elland Road, Howe likely has his reservations.

Should Newcastle sign Phillips?

Negatively, it could well hamper the progress of someone such as Sean Longstaff, who has been hailed as the "unsung hero" of St. James' Park by pundits Paul Merson and Jamie Redknapp.

As per FBref, the Toon academy graduate ranks among the top 12% of midfielders across Europe's top five leagues over the past year for touches in the attacking penalty area and the top 16% for progressive passes received, underscoring his energy and enthusiasm, weaving through promising passages of play into the danger areas.

His tenacity and industriousness truly have been integral to the fluidity of Newcastle's team, and having started half of his side's matches this season so far, the impact of his presence has been profound.

It's the churning engine of his craft, the unrelentling work ethic that has made the difference, and at no disregard to Phillips' abilities, would ousting such an important figure truly be prudent for the Magpies?

Ultimately, it is Howe's finger that will pull the trigger, but based on the current evidence, it is unlikely that he would risk unsettling the equilibrium for a player of questionable reliability.

Spurs: Levy wasted £62m on dud who was "one of the worst"

Tottenham Hotspur have made their best start to a Premier League campaign under Ange Postecoglou's management this season – ever. And with this youthful squad displaying every bit the calibre and confidence of title challengers, the mood has not been so high in a long time.

The club have not had much to cheer about over the past several years, with the golden period of Mauricio Pochettino's management failing to unearth silverware and the days since bringing only instability and pathos.

There have been some cracking moments, sure, with Harry Kane's prolific exploits taking him to record status both as Tottenham's goalscorer and his nation's.

But ever since the Champions League final in 2019, which bitterly resulted in Liverpool's victory, Spurs have failed to create enough success, having now qualified for Europe's elite club competition once across four campaigns after four successive top-four finishes.

All that looks set to change now though, with Postecoglou cultivating a winning, confident mentality, harnessing the singular qualities of his squad and melding them into something unified and complete – a confluence of style, like raindrops meandering down a pane.

To do so, however, the Australian has utilised a sense of ruthlessness, which is necessary, in a pragmatic sense, for a manager seeking illustrious success for his team, ridding his side of the debris.

One such piece of flotsam is Davinson Sanchez, who once arrived as Tottenham's club-record acquisition, young and exciting and talented and robust, but he has failed to live up to his potential and cost the club a pretty penny in the process.

How much did Tottenham spend on Davinson Sanchez?

In the summer of 2017, Tottenham were flowing and had just finished second in the Premier League with 86 points, having completed the 2016/17 campaign with the division's meanest defence (shipping 26 goals).

Countrymen Toby Alderweireld and Jan Vertonghen had formed an "exceptional" defensive axis in front of Hugo Lloris' goal, according to ex-Lilywhite Alton Thelwell, who praised Alderweireld for his "tenacious" efforts and Vertonghen for his "Rolls-Royce" defending.

It was another year without silverware – something that last came to the club in 2008 – but an emphatic campaign nonetheless, and sustained development as a unit; Sanchez was signed that summer, 21 years old and willing to absorb the craft of his established peers.

The Colombian centre-half joined from Eredivisie giants Ajax for a club-record £42m, eclipsing the £30m paid for Moussa Sissoko the year before.

Chairman Daniel Levy clearly had a vision, but as would soon become clear, Sanchez did not have the desired effect and certainly did not maintain the defensive might over many years.

Why did Tottenham sign Davinson Sanchez?

Sanchez had the world at his feet and had repaid the faith entrusted by Ajax's esteemed recruitment model by winning the Dutch side's Player of the Year award ahead of teammates such as Frenkie De Jong and Hakim Ziyech.

He had demonstrated his vast array of skills, scoring six league goals from 32 outings, keeping 12 clean sheets, completing 87% of his passes, averaging 1.9 interceptions, 1.4 tackles and 5.2 clearances per game and winning 60% of his aerial battles.

With Alderweireld and Vertonghen still perched in their prime, it was the apt moment for Sanchez to make the move and test his mettle in the Premier League, and while he played 43 times during that maiden term, starting 29 times in the Premier League, he has arguably failed to live up to those performances since.

What was Davinson Sanchez`s salary at Tottenham?

Sanchez boasted a salary of £65k-per-week while with the Lilywhites, and while this was not the most lucrative of salaries at the club, it was still a steady strain on the outfit's finances, offering little value on the pitch in return over the past few years.

When combining this, across the six years he spent at the club, with his lofty transfer fee, it's discernible that Sanchez cost Tottenham £62m, which, frankly, does not constitute value for money with all things considered.

davinson-sanchez-tottenham-hotspur

In September, Turkish Super Lig giants Galatasaray secured the 56-cap titan's signature for around €15m (£13m), which does mean that Spurs have recuperated a portion of the initial fee at least, however such a paltry sum epitomises the sheer regret of his time at Tottenham.

What happened to Davinson Sanchez?

Last season, Sanchez hit his nadir, starting only eight matches all season in the English top-flight, making 1.3 tackles, 2.3 clearances and committing a foul for a penalty.

His efforts were so substandard over recent years that he even led Jamie O'Hara to brand him "one of the worst players" he had seen in Spurs' backline, and the very fact that he failed to earn a spot in such a dismal defence last season says it all regarding his reliability.

Given that he also ranks outside the top 40% of central defenders across Europe's top five leagues over the past year for tackles, interceptions and clearances per 90, as per FBref, he hardly seems to boast that past zest.

And when factoring in Tottenham's defensive woes over the past year, it's inexcusable that he hasn't contributed more effectively – Cristian Romero ranks among the top 5% for tackles and the top 14% for interceptions per 90, for example.

Clearly, aged just 27, Sanchez has vastly underperformed to see such a startling depreciation to his market value, having arrived in London to much fanfare.

Having now joined Galatasaray, he is presented with the opportunity to rekindle his career and prove his worth, but based on the evidence over the past several years, he is not up to scratch for a role within a squad challenging for a spot at the very forefront of the game.

Davinson Sanchez

Spurs supporters might recall some fond memories of a player who was once described as "fantastic" by goalkeeper Andre Onana, but he flattered to deceive all too often and it is beneficial to the team that he has now moved on.

Having also been likened to "deadwood" by O'Hara, Sanchez really was thrown out to sea; Postecoglou was not convinced and Levy enforced his sale – a poignant conclusion to a once-promising career in London.

Arsenal boss Jonas Eidevall defends controversial post-season Australia tour and claims players made 'clear wish' not to have time off

Arsenal boss Jonas Eidevall has highlighted the "commercial" benefits of the Gunners' post-season tour, which has been criticised for its timing.

  • Arsenal to travel to Australia post-season
  • Tour slammed for timing after WSL finale
  • Eidevall defends decision amid "commercial" benefits
  • WHAT HAPPENED?

Arsenal Women announced earlier this week that they would be travelling to Australia to take on an A-League All Stars XI in a friendly on May 24. That decision has come in for criticism given that the Gunners' last match of the WSL season, which comes at home to Brighton, falls on May 18. But head coach Eidevall has underlined the positives of the post-season tour, claiming it is a way to spread the "popularity" of Arsenal and "women's football in general."

    WHAT EIDEVALL SAID

The Gunners boss told reporters on Friday: "Let us acknowledge the great thing which is that it is commercially viable for us to do a post-season trip like this. That shows the club’s investment and the popularity that the team has, not only in the UK but across the globe. When you see Australia as a football continent, I was there and lucky enough to experience the World Cup last summer, you can see the enthusiasm and interest women’s football has there and it is great that can continue to build. This is another opportunity to do that, for women’s football in general and Arsenal as a specific club. Once the decision was taken we were going it is about making the best and the most out of that opportunity.

"That means for some players it will be the right thing to go and for some players it will not be the right thing to go, if we talk about it from a loading perspective and a football perspective. We need to take good decisions on that. It is a great opportunity for us to see our first year professionals get experience, travel with us, play with us. We really need to grab that opportunity as well, in combination with having a strong team there and going out and showcasing Arsenal to fans in another continent and how we play football. It is about finding that balance to do that. I have high hopes that we are able to do that."

  • THE BIGGER PICTURE

While Eidevall hints that some players may miss that friendly clash if necessary, with the likes of Leah Williamson, Laura Wienroither and Vivianne Miedema all sidelined with long-term injuries at points this term. But of those that are available, the Arsenal manager insists that they wanted to play given the international break around the same time. "The reason we are having activity in this period of the year is because of the calendar," he added. "We play our last competitive game on [18] May and the normal thing would be to go on holiday because our season is done.

"But there is an international period of fixtures which starts on 27 May, where they play competitive games. So it was a clear wish from players and associations to not go on holiday in that period to help players prepare for those international fixtures. That was the first decision for us to make was to not go on holiday during that period. After that, different opportunities come up. But it was never the case that players would be off because of where the international fixtures are. If there wasn’t international fixtures here, the decision might have been very different, in terms of where we plan our training and matches."

    WHAT NEXT FOR ARSENAL?

The Gunners are back in WSL action against Aston Villa on March 24, where they will try to recover from a 3-1 bruising at the hands of leaders Chelsea last time out. They then face the Blues a week later in the Conti Cup final, a repeat of last year's showdown. It remains Eidevall's last remaining shot at silverware barring a minor miracle in the league.

Leeds could instantly ditch Bamford by unleashing 5 ft 11 Thorp Arch whiz

Leeds United have not found goals hard to come by this season as they have blown Championship teams away with their attacking prowess on several occasions.

Huddersfield Town were the latest side to feel their wrath as Daniel Farke's men racked up four goals at Elland Road on Saturday, which has taken their tally to 24 strikes in 14 matches.

The likes of Joel Piroe, Crysencio Summerville, Georginio Rutter, and Dan James have been in fine form but one player who has had a difficult start to the campaign in front of goal is Patrick Bamford.

He has endured a frustrating 18 months or so at the top end of the pitch and Farke is not able to sign a replacement for another two months until the January window opens.

However, the German coach could instantly ditch the former England international by unleashing Thorp Arch whiz Mateo Joseph.

The stats that show Bamford has underperformed this year

The ex-Middlesbrough man has scored zero goals and provided zero assists in six Championship appearances for the Whites during the 2023/24 campaign.

He is not able to blame a lack of opportunities in front of goal, either, as Bamford has missed a penalty and racked up 1.16 xG (Expected Goals) in that time, which suggests that his finishing ability, or lack thereof, has been the issue.

His disappointing start to this season comes off the back of his poor performances at the top end of the pitch last term, which means that his struggles are not a flash in the pan.

The 30-year-old marksman scored four goals from 8.61 xG and missed 13 'big chances' in 28 Premier League outings for Leeds as they were relegated from the top-flight.

The stats that show why Joseph deserves a first-team chance

The 5 ft 11 academy forward has been in exceptional form for the club's youth teams since the start of last season and Farke could brutally ditch Bamford by unleashing the 20-year-old talent before the January window opens.

Joseph has been on the bench for two Championship games this season and recently produced a goal and an assist against Hertha Berlin II in his first U21 appearance of the campaign.

This comes after the England U20 international plundered an eye-catching 17 goals and two assists in 24 U21 matches throughout the 2022/23 season.

Leeds forward Mateo Joseph.

These statistics show that Joseph is a superb goalscorer for the U21s, with 18 goals in 25 games since the start of last term, and that is the opposite of what Bamford has been of late.

The talented youngster, who was hailed as "really sharp" by Farke, also made six first-team appearances for Leeds during the previous campaign, which included three substitute outings at Premier League level.

This shows that Joseph has been trusted to play with the senior squad and the current boss placed his faith in him by naming the excellent gem on the bench twice this term.

Therefore, the German tactician must now bring the 20-year-old finisher into the first-team fold on a regular basis and offer him an opportunity to impress in the Championship, as Bamford has not done enough over the last 18 months to suggest that he is a better option than playing the promising young talent.

West Ham man "will depart" at the end of the season, says journalist

An important West Ham man "will depart" at the end of 2023/2024, according to journalist Sami Mokbel of The Daily Mail this week.

West Ham back on track after 3-2 win

The Hammers, after losing three consecutive Premier League games on the spin, are back on the right track following their dramatic 3-2 win over Nottingham Forest on Sunday.

Star midfielder Lucas Paqueta gave the hosts an early lead, with strikes from Taiwo Awoniyi and Anthony Elanga briefly putting Forest into the ascendancy before Jarrod Bowen equalised just one minute later. Summer signing James Ward-Prowse provided the assist for Bowen, and the midfielder was on hand with another two minutes from added time. Ward-Prowse's whipped delivery from a corner found the towering Tomas Soucek at the back post, who nodded his ball into the bottom corner to seal all three points for a delighted David Moyes.

The Scotsman, who has been under pressure this season with reports suggesting Moyes could even be sacked by West Ham, hailed the Hammers for fighting their way back against Forest.

"We hadn’t played well enough in the first half. We weren’t quick enough," said Moyes on West Ham's win over Forest.

"Was it a bit to do with a little carry over from Thursday? It could be, but also it could be Nottingham Forest leaving us on the ball a bit. I thought we played okay but we were that slow in the first half that I was bored myself watching it at times.

"Coming out for the second half, we wanted them to get much quicker with the ball, be faster, try and get more balls in behind and make more runs behind them. I thought we did that. Unfortunately we got done with a little bit of a sucker punch, went 2-1 down, but great credit to the lads because they picked themselves up and got the result."

Two great results on the spin, with West Ham also beating Olympiacos last week in the Europa League, have eased some pressure off Moyes but his contract is still set to expire in 2024 as things stand.

Moyes "will depart" West Ham next year

The 60-year-old led West Ham to their first major trophy since 1980 at the end of last season with a Conference League triumph in Prague, but league form has been very questionable since 2022.

David Moyes for West Ham.

West Ham finished a lowly 14th and battled relegation for much of the campaign. There were calls for Moyes to be sacked at points around that time, with reliable Mail reporter Mokbel now saying Moyes "will depart" come the end of this season.

“That question will linger until David Moyes finally departs," he said on the It's all Kicking off Podcast this week.

"I think he’s going to depart, all the information we have indicates that he will depart at the end of this season.”

Whatever happens with Moyes, there is little doubt he will be remembered by supporters as one of their most popular head coaches of the last few decades.

Dwayne Bravo retires from international cricket

West Indies allrounder Dwayne Bravo has called time on his international career. He will however continue to play franchise T20 cricket across the world. The 35-year-old made his debut in 2004, and played 40 Tests, 164 ODIs and 66 T20Is, although his last international appearance was more than two years ago, in a T20I against Pakistan in September 2016.In a statement released to the media, Bravo said, “Today I want to confirm to the cricket world that I have officially retired from international cricket in all formats of the game. After 14 years when I made my debut for the West Indies, I still remember that moment I received the maroon cap before walking onto the Lords Cricket Ground against England in July 2004. The enthusiasm and passion I felt then, I have kept with me throughout my career.”However, I must accept that for me to preserve my longevity as a professional cricketer, I must do as others before have done, leave the international arena for the next generation of players.”Bravo played his last Test in 2010, and had gradually transformed into a T20 specialist in the past few years. The combination of his big-hitting ability, athletic fielding, and canny bowling with an assortment of slower balls and change-ups made him a much sough-after figure in T20 cricket the world over. His last ODI was in 2014, the fourth match of the dramatic series against India in Dharamsala, after which the West Indies flew home in protest against their board, cutting the tour short. Bravo was the captain of the ODI side then, and at the toss, the full squad stood behind him, symbolically backing his decision. With his announcement, Bravo has drawn a line under any potential international comeback. As recently as before West Indies’ ongoing tour of India, there had been talk of Bravo, among others, possibly making it to the national team.He ends with 2200 runs at an average of 31.42 in Tests, with three centuries, to go with 86 wickets at 39.83. In ODIs, he made 2968 runs at 25.36, with a strike-rate of 82.30, while taking 199 wickets at 29.51 with an economy rate of 5.41.”I thank the countless persons who were instrumental to my success, particularly my family and QPCC where I developed my skills at an early age,” Bravo said. “I thank the many loyal fans who continue to support my journey and who recognize my efforts on and off the field. I am extremely fortunate to have a career that has taken me across the globe into the most prestigious dressing rooms sharing experiences with all the recent legends of this glorious game. I will continue my professional career as a cricketer and entertainer living as a true champion.”
