Ange dealt "huge blow" after van de Ven update out of Tottenham

Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou has been dealt a "huge blow" as a further update comes to light on defender Micky van de Ven's hamstring injury.

Maddison and van de Ven sidelined

Spurs lost their first Premier League game of the season on Monday, succumbing to a 4-1 defeat at the hands of Mauricio Pochettino's Chelsea, but that was the least of Postecoglou's problems on an evening to forget.

The Australian lost both Destiny Udogie and Cristian Romero to suspension after their red cards, while star midfielder James Maddison and van de Ven were forced off through injury.

An update on Maddison's condition came to light this morning, courtesy of Tottenham, who officially confirmed that the former Leicester City star has been withdrawn from Gareth Southgate's England squad due to his ankle problem.

The 26-year-old will now undergo rehab at Hotspur Way, set to miss the Three Lions' upcoming EURO 2024 qualifiers against Malta and North Macedonia. For van de Ven, there are hopes that the Dutch defender won't need surgery after he limped off against Chelsea with what looked like a serious issue with his hamstring.

However, there are still reports that Postecoglou's side could take to the January transfer market in search of back ups. Indeed, Bournemouth defender Lloyd Kelly is being targeted by Spurs while Everton ace Ben Godfrey is an option for Tottenham too.

Ange dealt "huge blow" after van de Ven update

Despite potentially not requiring an operation on his hamstring, which could keep him out for an extended period, a further update has claimed that van de Ven is still facing quite some time on the sidelines.

Indeed, a report by reliable journalist Matt Law of The Telegraph states that van de Ven is "set" for a "lengthy spell" out injured regardless. The former Wolfsburg star could be out till January "at the earliest" in what is described as a "huge blow" for Postecoglou.

While the north Londoners haven't yet put a timescale on his return, and even delayed a scan, this is what "estimates suggest" and Spurs, as previously reported, could be tempted to dip their toes into the winter transfer window.

The perfect van de Ven alternative

We'll know more about the centre-back after Postecoglou's press conference today, but we believe one man who could come as a great alternative to van de Ven is Everton's Godfrey.

Spurs have been linked with a move for the 25-year-old this week amid his lack of game time at Goodison Park, and if they decide to lodge a bid in January, it's clear he has some credentials to step into van de Ven's shoes.

Pace is a key factor for defenders in Postecoglou's high line, as demonstrated by van de Ven's excellent start to the campaign as a speedy player himself.

Afghanistan pick four spinners for Asia Cup

Afghanistan have picked three specialist spinners – a legspinner, a mystery spinner and a left-arm spinner – in their squad of 17 for the Asia Cup to be held in the UAE later this month.Sharafuddin Ashraf, the left-arm spinner, is among just two new additions – uncapped wicketkeeper Munir Ahmad being the other – to the squad that beat Ireland in the ODI series last week. Fast bowler Dawlat Zadran misses out.Sharafuddin has featured in 14 ODIs so far, the last of which came at the World Cup Qualifiers in March this year. He has also played six T20Is. In all, he has 17 top-flight international wickets. This is a maiden call-up for Munir Ahmad, who has been picked as a second wicketkeeper, an understudy to Mohammad Shahzad, the hard-hitting opening batsman.Ashraf aside, Afghanistan’s spin arsenal boasts of Rashid and Mujeeb, who have emerged richer in experience through county stints in England earlier this year apart from featuring in the IPL. Both of them also featured in the country’s maiden Test in India. They can also call upon a fourth option in offspinner allrounder Mohammad Nabi if needed. The squad is captained by Asghar Afghan, who along with Shahzad, Javed Ahmadi, Ihshanullah Jannat, Rahmat Shah and Hashmatullah Shahidi makes up the top order. In addition to Nabi, they have a second allrounder in Gulbadin Naib, capable of bowling handy seam-ups. Aftab Alam, Sayed Shirzad and Wafadar constitute their pace attack.Squad for Asia Cup: Mohammad Shahzad, Javed Ahmadi, Asghar Afghan(c), Rahmat Shah, Samiullah Shenwari, Hashmatullah Shahidi, Najibullah Zadran, Mohammad Nabi, Gulbadin Naib, Rashid Khan, Mujeeb Ur Rahman, Aftab Alam, Ihsanullah Janat, Sayed Shirzad, Wafadar, Munir Ahmad Kakar

Bancroft rehab continues with Durham deal in 2019

Cameron Bancroft became the third Australian cricketer to win an overseas deal after his part in the ball-tampering fiasco in Cape Town

Durham have signed Cameron Bancroft as their overseas player in all formats for 2019 -a further chance for rehabilitation for the Western Australian batsman after the ball-tampering escapade involving three Australian players.Bancroft was given a nine-month ban from international, State and Big Bash cricket by Cricket Australia that will expire in late December after he was caught trying to change the condition of the ball with sandpaper during a Test against South Africa in Cape Town.David Warner and Steve Smith, the other players banned after the Cape Town malarkey, with each of them serving 12-month suspensions, have already secured overseas contracts in Canada and the Caribbean Premier League.Bancroft’s competitive cricket has been more low-key, restricted to the Northern Territory Strike League. He is also expected to play for the WA Premier League club Willetton before an expected return with the Perth Scorchers.Bancroft, who admitted to altering the condition of the ball using sandpaper, had signed for Somerset in 2018 but his contract was withdrawn.Alongside the talk of forgiveness, but what is most interesting is the cricketing decision. Bancroft, subject to calls from Cricket Australia for either the World Cup or, more likely, Ashes series, has signed up for the whole season, an increasingly rare event in the English county game.In part, it is an indication of his desire for a settled period after a highly-fraught experience, although it also represents good positioning. With the World Cup due to take place in England next summer, followed by an Ashes Test series, he will hope to force himself into contention with a burst of early-season form. That is a sizeable task. Even before the ball-tampering affair, his Test place was under scrutiny and he has played only one T20I.Cameron Bancroft playing in the NT Strike League•Getty Images

His reputation in T20 is not particularly high, but the same is true of Tom Latham, the New Zealand batsman who has stabilised Durham’s top order in the past two seasons. They have reached the quarter-finals of the Vitality Blast under Latham’s captaincy with a game built around lower totals on the more challenging pitches in the north-east.Durham head coach Jon Lewis, said: “Cameron provides us with a very talented overseas signing who can bulk up our batting line up and help us compete for silverware.”Tom Latham has done a great job for us over the past two seasons but we anticipate Tom being unavailable due to the World Cup in 2019, therefore we were delighted to be able to bring Cameron in.”Cameron is a talented top order batsman and a great talent across all formats, he has the appetite and temperament for scoring big runs.”Bancroft said: “I am grateful for the opportunity and I can’t wait to get over and make an impact with Durham”.As part of his punishment, Bancroft has been required to undertake 100 hours’ community service. He has volunteered for a Perth charity working with children who have cancer and has undertaken a course in Spanish.

Usman Qadir declares intent to play for Australia

He wants to emulate his father Abdul Qadir by playing international cricket. Not for Pakistan, the land of his birth, but for Australia

Daniel Brettig26-Sep-2018Though legspinners are famously furtive about revealing their intentions, there is no such secrecy about Usman Qadir’s desire to emulate his father Abdul Qadir by playing international cricket. Not for Pakistan, the land of his birth, but for Australia, the country he has found increasingly receptive to his maturing repertoire of legbreaks, googlies and topspinners. On Wednesday, Usman made his state debut for Western Australia, and made an instant impression by fooling Cameron White in his very first over before going on to returning the notable figures of 3 for 50 in Warriors’ thumping of Victoria at the Junction Oval. It was fitting that Qadir perform so well in Melbourne, given that two decades ago it was for the city’s Carlton Cricket Club that Abdul Qadir claimed a record-equalling 76 wickets in club cricket, beginning a relationship with Australia that has led to his son’s WA sojourn.Having seen the pathway opened up by another legspinner of Pakistani origin – Fawad Ahmed in 2013 – Usman has identified his qualification for a distinguished talent visa and its attendant fast-tracking of Australian citizenship as means by which to be able to play for his adopted country in time for the 2020 World Twenty20 tournament, hosted by Australia. His application would need to be sponsored by Cricket Australia, and his performances would need to have demonstrated exceptional skill that will be of material benefit to Australian cricket.”When I saw Fawad, the government changed the law for him, I am going to apply for a distinguished talent visa and before that I’ve got permanent residency and hopefully I will get citizenship as well in two years’ time,” he said. “My goal is to play for Australia in the 2020 World Twenty20. Hopefully, definitely [I will be eligible].”It’s been six years since Usman, 25, first loomed as a possible Australian representative. Having played for Pakistan at the 2012 Under-19s World Cup in northern Australia, he was encouraged by then South Australia coach Darren Berry to play club cricket for Adelaide, where he performed well and seemed on course to graduate to higher honours.”All the credit goes to him because he’s a great guy, he supported me as well, but at that time they said you can get the nationality next year and you can get the contract as well, and that’s when I said to my dad,” Usman said after the game. “But that time I was very small, I couldn’t have a mature mind, so my dad said ‘you have to come back and play for Pakistan’, so that’s why I flew back to Pakistan.Usman Qadir is congratulated on his Western Australia debut•Getty Images”I got named in the Pakistan team and my father was the chief selector at that time and he took my name off because he said ‘everybody is going to say to me that your son is not performing well’, but at that time I got the hat-trick and got seven wickets, and the chairman put my name in the team and he said, ‘no, everybody is going to say that you take your son in the team’.”After that I quit cricket for one-and-a-half-years, and I keep telling him I don’t want to play for Pakistan, I want to go to play in Australia and make my future. He kept telling me, ‘no, you have to play for Pakistan’ but last year he said to me ‘if you want to go you are grown up, you can do whatever you want to do, I’m with you and I’ll support you’.”So it was that two years ago, Usman returned to Australia with the intent to build a new cricket career. At the time, his father suggested that it was fair enough to make the move, having exhausted his options in Pakistan. “I, as a father and a former cricketer, have lost trust in our system to give a fair chance to our players to prove themselves,” Abdul Qadir said in 2016. “I don’t want to see my other son to go down and suffer due to this system which doesn’t respect their legends.”I never went to any selector on behalf of my son and never will. My other sons were also capable enough to represent Pakistan but they didn’t grow, but Usman is very much capable and I know he has potential for top-level cricket. I have allowed Usman to decide about his future. I did hold him back from migrating to Australia in 2013, and asked him to stay in Pakistan. But now after him being ignored for more than three years, I don’t think it’s fair for me to stop him anymore.”Last summer he played for Hawkesbury in Sydney club cricket, scooping 36 wickets in a mere six matches and catching the attention of WA’s then coach Justin Langer in a net session. Langer, of course, is now Australia coach, so it is the commission of his successor Adam Voges to manage Usman’s path. For now, that includes 50-over matches and a Big Bash League contract with the Perth Scorchers; a Sheffield Shield call-up looms next.”There is politics, they’re making their own decisions, they have likes and dislikes and that’s why I don’t like that,” Usman said of his experience in Pakistan. “If I’m performing well you can see, and I did not get any chances to play good cricket. I said to myself that I didn’t want to play in Pakistan anymore, so I moved here.”If I’m performing well, hopefully they give me an opportunity to play four days (Sheffield Shield) as well. I’m living at the moment in Sydney, hopefully I’m going to move to Perth to play in club cricket and performing well there hopefully they give me a chance to perform in four days as well.”

New Zealand T20 team a 'huge test' – Australia women's coach

Ahead of a three-match T20 series later this month, Matthew Mott believes New Zealand have been ‘the most consistent side in the format in the past couple of years’

ESPNcricinfo staff08-Sep-2018The three-match T20I series against “benchmark team” New Zealand later this month will be a “huge test” and help Australia evaluate their standing in the format ahead of the World T20 in November, according to the women’s team coach Matthew Mott.”New Zealand have been the most consistent side in the format in the past couple of years. They are a benchmark team so we’ll have a great gauge of where we’re at,” Mott told .While Australia enter the series confident, on the back of a tri-series win against India and England in March, where they also posted their highest ever total of 209 in the format – a world record since broken by New Zealand and then England – they have a winless streak against New Zealand dating back to 2012, to correct. Since then, the two teams have played three bilateral T20 series and New Zealand won each of them 2-1.”We definitely made a step forward in India with the style of cricket we played, even cricket fans I’ve spoken to back here have really noted just how much the players embraced that style of play we’d be calling for,” Mott said. “I think we have taken a lot of confidence from the India tour, but in this format New Zealand are as good an opposition we can hope to play.”The last time the sides met in the shortest format of the game in early 2017, Australia’s batsmen let them down as they failed to chase down low totals in the second and third matches, after taking a lead with a 40-run win in the series opener. But Mott felt they were better equipped to handling similar situations now, should they be confronted by them in the upcoming series.”We look back at the series we played against them and we probably lost that, rather than they won, because we bowled them out for 100 a couple of times and should have got over the line but didn’t. This a series that if we get in the same position as last time, I think we’re equipped to finish the job and that’ll be the growth that hopefully we’ve seen over that time.”The three-match T20 series commences on September 29 at the North Sydney Oval.

Celtic: Hoops update emerges on Matt O’Riley’s future at Parkhead

Celtic central midfielder Matt O’Riley has recently been linked with an exit from the club, and a fresh report has now shared the player’s verdict on him leaving in January.

Brentford and Brighton interest in O'Riley

The Denmark international first arrived north of the border from MK Dons back in January 2022 where he’s since gone on to make a total of 86 appearances to date, becoming an integral member of the squad in the Scottish Premiership (Transfermarkt – Matt O’Riley stats).

The Hoops talisman has firmly established himself as Brendan Rodgers’ overall best-performing player so far this season with a match rating of 7.91 (WhoScored – Celtic statistics), with his outstanding form having attracted interest from two clubs in the Premier League.

At the start of next year, Brentford are considering an approach for the 22-year-old, with the same outlet claiming that chiefs wouldn’t be in a position to turn down a big offer, whilst Brighton and Hove Albion are also admirers, but it doesn’t sound like either of his potential suitors will have much fortune should they try their luck in January.

Matt O'Riley fully focused on Celtic

According to Daily Record reporter Gavin Berry in the last 48 hours, Matt O’Riley doesn’t want to leave Celtic and is happy at the club having only recently signed a new long-term contract, in what will be seen as a boost for Rodgers.

Matt O’Riley isn’t contemplating a Celtic exit amid claims the Hoops midfielder is being eyed by English Premier League pair Brighton and Brentford.

"Reports south of the border suggested the Hoops midfielder was on the radar of the two top flight clubs but Record Sport understands the 22-year-old former Fulham graduate has no interest in leaving the Scottish Premiership champions any time soon after signing a new contract just last month to keep him at the club at least until 2027 after summer bids were rejected from Leeds United and Bologna.”

Celtic midfielder Matt O'Riley.

When O’Riley put pen to paper from MK Dons, Celtic paid a reported £1.5m to secure his services and he’s proven that he’s worth that and so much more since then, especially this season where he has eight contributions (six goals and two assists) to his name in ten outings in the Scottish Premiership.

Sponsored by Nike, the left-footed ace has also recorded 27 shots over the course of the current campaign which is more than any other of his fellow teammates (FBRef – Celtic statistics), showing not only his constant desire to hit the back of the net but also how much he stands out compared to his peers at Parkhead.

Additionally, O’Riley is a versatile operator having been deployed in six different positions over the grass since the start of his career, including everywhere across the midfield and as a second striker, so regardless of him not wanting to leave, it’s hugely important that chiefs do what they can to fend off interest and retain his services.

Spurs told Postecoglou may have a "phenomenon" and star "of the future"

One country's technical director was "warned" that Tottenham could have a nation's future star who has the potential to be a "phenomenon".

Tottenham 1-4 Chelsea

During a chaotic Monday night, Spurs manager Ange Postecoglou suffered his first Premier League defeat as manager with former Lilywhites boss Mauricio Pochettino coming away from north London with a win upon his return. Their 4-1 defeat to Chelsea is a tough one to take, but they can take a lot of pride away from the result given Spurs' bravery in playing a high line with nine men and the fact it took Pochettino's side a long time to break through.

There is a case to be made that the four goals even flattered Chelsea, who actually endured a far tricker task at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium than their result would suggest. When asked about Spurs' decision to maintain a high press, rather than sit back in a low block, Postecoglou explained that his side will refuse to diverge away from their philosophy.

Tottenham Hotspur manager Ange Postecoglou.

"It's just who we are mate," said Postecoglou on Tottenham's loss to Chelsea.

"And it's who we're going to be as long as I'm here. We go down to five men mate, we'll have a crack."

There is a far bigger worry for Postecoglou than simply not taking away any points. Injuries to both James Maddison and Micky van de Ven could seriously hamper Spurs in the coming weeks, with the latter star pulling his hamstring. Cristian Romero and Destiny Udogie will also be suspended following their red cards, bringing attention to Tottenham's severe lack of depth.

There is perhaps one silver lining, though, coming in the form of goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario's incredible performance. The Italian pulled off save after save over what was a Man of the Match performance for Spurs, with the summer signing looking like one of this league's most in-form keepers right now.

Guglielmo Vicario could become a "phenomenon"

Commenting on Vicario's potential, Kosovo technical director Sami Ujkani has revealed he was "warned" at Empoli that the 27-year-old could become a "phenomenon" and Italy's future star.

Tottenham goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario.

Speaking in an interview with TUTTOmercatoWEB, Ujkani praised Vicario and made comments over their time at Empoli together.

“When I made the choice to go to Empoli, Sicignano was there and he warned me that Vicario could become a phenomenon," said Ujkani.

"Guglielmo has grown a lot, we are all proud of him. Italy has the goalkeeper of the future. For me he could go anywhere; whoever took it would have done bingo. But the right choice was certainly to go to Tottenham".

The shot-stopper has also been hailed by ESPN pundit Janusz Michallik in recent weeks, who described Vicario as a truly "excellent" addition to Postecoglou's squad.

"Defensively what he’s done is even more impressive," said Michallik last month.

"They’re the second-best defensive team, look at Vicario, Google probably went down when Vicario came to London because nobody paid attention to who he was, but, today, we’re talking about Sanchez, Onana and Raya, here you have Vicario who is excellent,”

Fidel Edwards' blistering late spell caps Hampshire's fightback

Nottinghamshire had control for large parts of the day, but a 133-run eighth-wicket stand between Liam Dawson and Kyle Abbott turned the tables

ECB Reporters Network19-Aug-20181:40

Edwards leaves Notts with a headache

ScorecardFidel Edwards produced a blistering evening six-over spell of 3 for 9 to complete an action-packed first day of Hampshire’s Specsavers County Championship fixture with Nottinghamshire.Nottinghamshire were forced to negotiate 15 evening overs having bowled Hampshire out for 277.And Edwards, who now boasts 20 wickets against Nottinghamshire in five innings, blasted through fellow West Indian Kraigg Brathwaite, Jake Libby and nightwatchman Matt Milnes in an incredible fast bowling showcase.Gareth Berg also managed to claim a scalp as the visitors struggled to 39 for 4, a deficit of 238.James Vince’s 74 along with Liam Dawson and Kyle Abbott’s half centuries in a 133 eighth-wicket stand had earlier produced responses after Hampshire suffered three mini batting collapses.Steven Mullaney found three wickets in five balls, before Luke Fletcher lead a spell of three wickets for the visitors without a run and then Matt Henry rounded off the innings with another flurry.Mullaney elected to bowl without a toss but only managed to use the fast-bowling friendly conditions of heavy overcast clouds and floodlights to wrangle a single morning wicket.Having seen play delayed by 45 minutes, Mark Footitt, on his first Championship appearance for Nottinghamshire since last August, found the outside of Weatherley’s bat, with stand-in keeper Riki Wessels completing the catch. It was two overs after lunch, though, when Nottinghamshire sparked Hampshire’s first mini collapse with Mullaney’s nagging top of off-stump length proving awkward to face.Jimmy Adams, Sam Northeast and Tom Alsop will all compare notes of how Mullaney sneaked past their outside edges with just a hint of seam movement to clip the top of their bails. It meant Hampshire fell from 58 for 1 to 62 for 4 inside five Mullaney deliveries, over two overs.Vince had watched the carnage unfold from the non-striker’s end, unmoved with a steely stare after each team-mate moped back to the pavilion. The Hampshire captain sensibly, yet with plenty of aggression, dragged his side away from immediate danger by unfurling a series of off-side glorious shots.Vince’s recovery act saw him score 11 fours in a counter-attacking 74, his fifty coming from 68 balls. He had added 75 with Rilee Rossouw for the fifth wicket before a second crumple which saw Hampshire lose three wickets without scoring a run.Rossouw was the first of the trio of scalps as he drove loosely to Matthew Carter at first slip off Luke Fletcher. Vince’s rearguard ended when his attempted cut flicked up to Mullaney at first slip, who caught on the second juggle. Fletcher pinned Berg on the pads to complete the treble of wickets on 137.But like the first flurry, a large partnership followed, this time between Dawson and Abbott. Dawson had only managed 101 runs in his first seven Championship innings of the summer, with a top score of 34 not out, but maturely batted his team out another sticky situation. An innings built on hard running, with just five fours and a six, Dawson reached fifty in 69 deliveries. He fell for 72 when he charged down the wicket, swung his bat wildly, and was bowled by Carter.Abbott had been the more watchful in the partnership but collected his own half-century in 95 balls. But Dawson’s dismissal sparked another burst of wickets, with Steyn caught at first slip and Edwards run out by fellow West Indian Brathwaite – with Hampshire bowled out for 277.Edwards got his revenge on Brathwaite in just the eighth over when Adams pulled off an impressive catch at second slip. Nash, who had two massive lbw appeals from Edwards turned down, was caught behind off Berg, before Edwards castled Libby and Milnes.

Tom Curran points Surrey towards the title

ScorecardWhile his younger brother was leading England’s flimsy resistance at the Ageas Bowl, Tom Curran added to the impression that Surrey are champions elect as his 5 for 28 forced Nottinghamshire to follow on at the Kia Oval.Nottinghamshire were bowled out in some disarray for 101 in reply to Surrey’s 375 as Curran made a telling impact in his first Championship game of the season. Although they rallied in the final session of day two, reaching stumps on 83 for 2 in their second innings, they still trail by 191.Surrey – 32 points ahead of nearest rivals Somerset before this round of matches and seeking their eighth win of the campaign – look like taking another significant step towards their first Specsavers County Championship title since 2002.

Ben Slater and Kraigg Brathwaite put on 41 for Notts’ first wicket second time around, before Conor McKerr had Slater caught behind for 21, and there was more resistance until off spinner Amar Virdi, introduced just before bad light brought a premature end to the day, seven overs early, had Jake Libby leg-before for 17. Brathwaite is 39 not out.Tom Moores, with 29, was the top-scorer after Curransent back Slater (9), Brathwaite (2) and Libby (12) in quick succession, while Morne Morkel had Samit Patel leg-before for 5.Slater was caught behind, Brathwaite leg-before and Libby held at third slip, driving, and Notts were 39 for 5 when McKerr, replacing Morkel at the Vauxhall End, struck in his first over to have Billy Root caught at the wicket by Ben Foakes for 6.McKerr then saw Riki Wessels (12) slice to point to make it 70 for 6, and just before tea Luke Wood was caught behind for 8 in Morkel’s second spell to complete a miserable afternoon session for the visitors.Moores had just extra cover driven McKerr for a flamboyant boundary when, two balls later, he aimed another big drive to a ball outside his off stump and edged to Foakes, who then took his fifth catch of the innings when Luke Fletcher nicked a drive at the returning Curran. Two balls later, Harry Gurney’s stumps were shattered by Curran and Notts’ last three wickets had gone in seven balls.Earlier Mark Stoneman’s 22nd first-class hundred helped Surrey to four batting bonus points as they made good progress from their overnight 256 for 6. Opener Stoneman, who resumed on 99 not out, soon reached three figures and was eventually ninth out for 144 having batted for more than seven hours and faced 260 balls, hitting 18 fours.Last wicket pair McKerr and Virdi completed the task of getting Surrey past the 350-mark with a frisky stand of 35 after Stoneman, looking to cut a ball a little too near him for the shot, edged Wood’s left-arm swingers to keeper Moores. At the start of the day, Stoneman and Curran had taken their seventh wicket partnership to 84 in 22 overs before Curran, who hit some sparkling offside shots in a 69-ball 43 which included five fours, top-edged a hook at Matt Milnes to Root at long leg. The short ball also accounted for Morkel, who skied a flappy pull at Gurney to Milnes at long leg to go for 5.McKerr finished 19 not out and, immediately after hitting Patel’s left-arm spin for six over long on to reach 19, No 11 Virdi was bowled heaving at the next ball.
