Haynes, Sammy question Pybus' return to West Indies

The former team director was hired back by Cricket West Indies without an interview process

Nagraj Gollapudi16-Feb-2018Desmond Haynes was right. The West Indies opening great had publicly questioned the process behind Richard Pybus’ return to cricket in the West Indies as high performance director – a post newly created by Cricket West Indies (CWI). The much-travelled coach returns just over a year after he had left as team director.”It would be great to ask the [CWI] president [Dave Cameron] about this appointment and when was this position advertised,” Haynes posted on his Facebook account. The answer, ESPNcricinfo can confirm, is that it wasn’t: the post was not advertised and Cameron did have a direct hand in Pybus’ appointment, without interviewing any candidates.Haynes was not the only skeptic. Darren Sammy, the former West Indies captain who led during Pybus’ tenure as director, expressed disbelief at his return on Twitter. “Lies lies lies… Must be fake news,” Sammy tweeted on February 9. A day later, in response to a reply, he tweeted: “Well I’m still hoping that nightmare is not true #fakenews he’s not coming back at CWI.”Johnny Grave, the CWI chief executive, would not comment on Cameron’s role in the matter but confirmed that Pybus’ appointment was approved by the board of directors. “Everyone, including the senior management at CWI, is behind Pybus’ appointment,” Grave told ESPNcricinfo.According to Grave, Pybus was headhunted and the Englishman will play a consultant’s role, working about 200 days a year over a two-year contract. Pybus is expected to be the “bridge” between Jimmy Adams, the director of cricket and the man who succeeded him, and Graeme West, who is the manager at the High Performance Centre (HPC) in Antigua.”It is a strategic appointment,” Grave said. “It is a two-year consultancy role and it is specifically to do with establishing the HPC at the Coolidge Cricket Ground [in Antigua]. And ensuring the franchise-based Professional Cricket League that Richard set up four years ago becomes an even more elite, professional environment.”Grave believes that even though players from the Caribbean have professional contracts to play regional cricket, a lot of work remains in order to create the elite environment of the best domestic competitions overseas. Pybus’ extensive experience, including his previous stint in the West Indies, makes him, in CWI’s eyes, the right choice. “Richard is specifically coming in to work with our franchise teams, establishing the HPC in Antigua, and to allow us to produce better cricketers on the international stage,” Grave said.Pybus’ first stint with CWI, which ended in January 2017 after three years, was a controversial one. It was Pybus who made it mandatory for a player to participate in the domestic first-class and one-day cricket tournaments to qualify for selection for West Indies. Many senior players vehemently opposed the policy and instead opted to solely operate in overseas Twenty20 leagues.Pybus, who was recently shortlisted for coach by the Bangladesh Cricket Board, did not react to Sammy’s tweets, but did defend his track record in reply to Haynes.”Hi Desmond, as I’m a FB friend I presume it’s for my attention too,” Pybus posted on Facebook late on February 14. “To clarify a couple of points, I was invited by Bangladesh to go and meet their board, I didn’t apply or was shortlisted for any positions. I’ve coached for nearly 30 years, I started the junior provincial program[me] at Border [in South Africa] with Mark Boucher, Makhaya Ntini and Justin Kemp. Went on to set up the Border Academy and coach Border. Mark and Makhaya both played in that team. Coached Pakistan at two Cricket World Cups, including the final in ’99. Fast forward through nine championships won across all formats in South Africa, 3 x double in three consecutive years, Steyn, Morkel, du Plessis coming through those winning set-ups.”And although WICB [CWI] doesn’t seem to get much credit for the three World Cups [World T20, Women’s World T20 and Under-19 World Cup] won in 2016, they weren’t an accident, the U-19 and women were run by the HP program[me]. I wasn’t replaced by Jimmy, I’d declined an extension. Regards Richard.”

Leeds: Orta’s "monster" signing saw his value rise by £8m in just 1 year

Leeds United were relegated from the Premier League at the end of last season and some supporters may blame the club's poor work in the transfer market as one of the key factors behind their drop to the Championship.

Who are Leeds' most expensive signings?

The Whites were promoted to the top-flight in 2020 and they used their new-found funds at the top level to bolster their squad with a host of big-money additions.

Indeed, four of the club's five most expensive signings in their history have been in the last three years, since their 2020 promotion-winning campaign.

Former sporting director Victor Orta was not afraid to splash the cash but he did not do enough to build a squad that could keep the team up last term.

However, not every signing was a disaster under the Spanish chief, who joined LaLiga outfit Sevilla this summer, as he did strike gold with a number of additions, one of whom was central midfielder Tyler Adams.

How much did Leeds pay for Tyler Adams?

The Whites swooped to sign the USA international from Bundesliga side RB Leipzig in the summer of 2022 for a reported transfer fee of £15m.

He was brought to Elland Road in spite of an unimpressive year in the German top flight with his former club. The defensive anchor averaged a Sofascore rating of 6.68 and made 1.7 tackles and interceptions per game across 24 league appearances throughout the 2021/22 campaign.

To put that number into context, 18 other Leipzig players averaged higher Sofascore ratings than Adams. He also ranked 13th for tackles and 12th for interceptions per match among his teammates throughout the season. This shows that the holding midfielder struggled to impose himself on games and was far away from being one of the best performers at the club.

Former Leipzig midfielder Tyler Adams.

Orta secured his services to reunite him with Jesse Marsch, who had worked with him in Germany, ahead of alternative target Mohamed Camara from Red Bull Salzburg, who had also played under the American head coach.

The Mali international eventually moved to AS Monaco in France for a reported fee of €15m (£12.8m) after it was claimed that Leeds failed in a €25m (£21.4m) swoop for his services earlier in the window.

Their failure to sign Camara turned out to be a blessing in disguise as they were able to acquire Adams for significantly less money with the USMNT star enjoying a more successful season, on a personal level, than the Ligue 1 enforcer.

How well did Adams perform for Leeds?

Leeds seemingly saw the potential for the USA international to be far better than his displays for Leipzig indicated he was and they were spot on as the midfielder produced consistently impressive performances in the Premier League.

Adams hit the ground running in England and was able to showcase his defensive quality on a regular basis in the middle of the park, playing in midfield alongside former Bayern Munich talent Marc Roca.

The 24-year-old patroller averaged a Sofascore rating of 6.98 and completed 82% of his attempted passes across 24 top-flight outings for the Whites throughout the 2022/23 campaign.

No player with at least one start under their belt averaged a higher Sofascore rating than the former Leipzig man, who was able to deliver excellent showings week-in-week-out.

Leeds midfielder Tyler Adams.

His ability to win possession back for the team was arguably his biggest strength. Adams made an outstanding 5.2 tackles and interceptions per game and won 57% of his duels, as per Sofascore, which shows that he came out on top in the majority of his physical contests.

No Leeds player with more than one appearance made more tackles and interceptions per outing and he made 0.8 more tackles each game than any of those teammates. This shows that he was an outstanding presence in midfield with his fantastic defensive quality.

Unfortunately, the central midfielder ended up missing the finale of the campaign as a hamstring injury ruled him out from the 15th of March onwards. This meant that Sam Allardyce, who was the caretaker boss during the run-in, was without the impressive gem's talents for a number of crucial matches.

Camara, on the other hand, averaged a Sofascore rating of 6.82 and made 3.8 tackles and interceptions combined across 29 Ligue 1 outings for Monaco.

Adams happened to rank within the top 3% of his positional peers among the Men's Big Five Leagues and European competitions for tackles and blocks per 90 respectively over the last 365 days. Whereas, Camara ranked in the bottom 36% or lower in both statistics during that time.

These statistics suggest that the Yorkshire-based outfit struck gold by signing the American dynamo instead of the Mali international due to his higher average performance level and his considerably better defensive contributions as a number six.

How much did Leeds sell Adams for?

Leeds cashed in on the "monster" – as he was dubbed by journalist Kevin Koczwara – during the recent summer transfer window after their relegation to the Championship.

Adams' performances were good enough to earn him a transfer back to the Premier League as Bournemouth swooped in to secure his services for a reported fee of £23m plus add-ons.

The move to the south coast came after a switch to Stamford Bridge to link up with Mauricio Pochettino failed to materialise.

This shows that Orta struck gold for the Whites as the defensive midfielder's market value soared by a minimum of £8m, with it remaining to be seen how much the add-ons are worth, in just one year at Elland Road.

He was a standout performer in a poor team last term and should be viewed as a successful signing in spite of the side's fate as Adams did his job on the pitch and was let down by his teammates, whilst he also made the club a significant profit off the field with his move to the Cherries.

Ortad deserves credit for that signing and supporters may wonder why the Spanish sporting director was not able to unearth more gems like him in recent years, as a few more additions like that could have bolstered their chances of avoiding the drop last season.

Leeds could unleash £1m "goal machine" to partner Piroe

Leeds United's start to the Championship campaign has been far from perfect, but it was made all the more frustrating last weekend when Daniel Farke made a number of questionable decisions in their 0-0 draw with Sheffield Wednesday.

Handing the newly-promoted side their first point of the season, there was one decision made in particular that drew widespread criticism.

What position does Joel Piroe play?

Having been signed as the answer to their striking prayers, Joel Piroe was brought in from Swansea City fresh off the back of two hugely successful years in Wales.

Scoring 19 and 22 respectively in his two league terms there, it was naturally expected that the Dutchman would occupy the Whites' vacant number nine role as he had done under Russell Martin. Especially after his debut goal against Ipswich Town, a poachers finish from close range.

So, to see the 24-year-old deployed deeper against the Owls raised eyebrows, with the natural centre-forward clearly being asked to drop back into midfield whilst Georginio Rutter, a naturally more creative player, pushed on.

Unsurprisingly, this blunted an attack that had scored four times away from home the week prior, and drew into question Farke's decision-making.

Although journalist Phil Hay did suggest that Piroe's tendency to drop deep was nothing new for the former PSV Eindhoven star, ex-Leeds boss Neil Redfearn gave his thoughts on the decision to do it against Wednesday: "I thought they were going to play four-four-two at first, like they did at Ipswich," he told BBC Radio Leeds. "But obviously they played more of a midfield role for Piroe. I just thought he got lost in the game.

“When he got on the ball, I think he showed some nice touches. And then as the game degenerated, Sheffield Wednesday’s doing, getting bodies behind the ball, making it scrappy and breaking stuff up, his influence got less and less.”

Clearly a forward who likes to pop up deeper, Farke should heed the backlash and remember that whilst Piroe might end up in midfield on occasion, he must remain their focal point up top.

How good is Joe Gelhardt?

That is, unless Farke seeks to play his new man alongside another forward with a similar preference for dropping in, perhaps making for the perfect fluid strike force. After all, Joe Gelhardt is ripe and ready for additional first-team action, coming off the back of a useful loan spell with Sunderland last season.

Having joined from Wigan Athletic back in 2020, the £1m man has already made 47 senior appearances for his new club despite his youth, even recording ten goal contributions.

His ability to dribble and pass – showcased by the fact that he ranks in the top 29% among his European peers for successful take-ons per 90 and the top 12% for progressive passes per 90 – makes him unlike most classic number nines, yet his finishing remains lethal. After all, he was lauded by Hay, who branded him a "goal machine".

joe-gelhardt

During his spell on Wearside, an interview with the Sunderland Echo gave a glimpse into his favoured role when tasked with being the sole striker: "I feel like sometimes I have to help in the build-up by dropping in, maybe an extra body to try and get out of the original press from the opposition.

"Then when we get it into that final third I know he wants me in and around the box, middle of the box so when the crosses come in from the wide players I’m there to score. It’s just about finding that balance of when to drop deep and when to run in behind but I think I’m getting a better understanding of it.”

With three goals and three assists for the Black Cats in the Championship, he certainly held his own.

The 21-year-old is clearly more proficient than Rutter, who has scored just one senior goal since moving in January, but has the creativity to interchange with Piroe. Perhaps they could form some kind of understanding as a strike partnership, knowing that if one drops deep, the other can stay forward.

Tottenham: Postecoglou Could Now Sign Own Bukayo Saka In "Magic" £50m Target

Tottenham Hotspur have already invested with supreme intelligence this summer, but there is now one touted deal that could surpass all that have been made before…

Who are Tottenham Hotspur signing?

A host of fine additions have been brought in by Ange Postecoglou throughout the window, bolstering a squad desperate to turn things around after the disaster endured last campaign.

Antonio Conte was one of three managers to oversee one of their worst seasons in recent history, as they were bypassed by a host of clubs who on paper should have been well beneath them.

Read the latest Tottenham transfer news HERE…

One such outfit was Brighton and Hove Albion, who have emerged as one of the Premier League's best-run clubs.

They have a phenomenal habit of snagging unknown talent from the far reaches of the game, with their scouting network broad and incisive, and then using their integration process to help create stars ready to be sold for a king's ransom.

Few exemplify such a well-oiled process better than Kaoru Mitoma, who has risen to prominence with his consistently outstanding displays over the last year.

This form has unsurprisingly garnered interest from the Lilywhites, with the Seagulls quoting any interested parties at a £50m sum.

How good is Kaoru Mitoma?

With trickery and dribbling prowess in abundance, already this is a gem who would align with Postecoglou's attractive and entertainment-first outlook on football.

However, the Japan international blends such elegance with hard work that has seen him thrive within English football, as he managed to maintain 1.3 tackles per game in the league last season alongside his attacking prowess.

Such starring assets have even drawn comparisons with some of the division's finest wide men, as FBref even include Bukayo Saka on his 'similar players' list when it comes to statistical profile.

Whilst tough to admit, Spurs fans have likely been shocked by just how influential the England international has come to be for their rivals. Such is his importance now to Mikel Arteta, the 21-year-old featured in every single one of their league games last term, scoring 14 and assisting a further 11.

Whilst performing at a much higher level than Mitoma, the similarities are showcased due to their preference to cut inside from the opposite flanks onto their favoured right and left foot, seeking to both create for others and score themselves.

This allowed the 26-year-old to score seven and assist six of his own in the league last year, having started the current season with three goal contributions in two games.

It was no surprise to see him branded "magic" by writer Seb Stafford-Bloor back in January, given that he produces it almost every game week nowadays.

In fact, when compared to other wingers across Europe, Mitoma also sits in the top 13% for non-penalty expected goal per 90, the top 6% for progressive carries per 90, and the top 3% for touches in the attacking penalty area per 90, via FBref.

The similarities with Saka are therefore emphasised as he also shines in the latter two facets, ranking in the top 8% for progressive carries per 90, and the top 4% for touches in the attacking penalty area per 90 when compared against the same group, via FBref.

They have each risen to become key members of their respective sides, both of which are on a seemingly unstoppable upward trajectory.

However, should Mitoma trade the south coast for the other side of north London, he could help fast-track Postecoglou's steady revolution too, returning Spurs where they will feel they belong.

Kusal Mendis to replace injured Kusal Perera in T20s

Kusal Perera has been ruled out of the T20 internationals against Bangladesh, and has been replaced in the squad by Kusal Mendis. Perera had suffered a side strain while batting in Sri Lanka’s third ODI of the tri-nation series that preceded the Tests, and had returned home for treatment. Although he was named in the T20 squad, he has not traveled with the team to Bangladesh.”According to medical advice, Perera needs more time to recover from the side strain,” an SLC release said. This is Perera’s second injury over the past year. In June he had pulled a hamstring while batting in the Champions Trophy, and was out of competitive cricket until November.Mendis, his replacement, has been in excellent Test form, but does not have an enviable T20I record. From eight international innings in the format, Mendis has a high score of 22, and a strike rate of 123. It is possible he will not play in the top order, with Danushka Gunathilaka, Upul Tharanga, Niroshan Dickwella and Dinesh Chandimal all jostling for positions. Mendis last played a T20I in February last year. The first of two games will be played in Mirpur on Thursday, before the action moves to Sylhet for Sunday.

Ian Wright hails "impressive" Spurs star going under the radar

BBC and ITV pundit Ian Wright has said that one "very impressive" Tottenham star is "going under the radar" at Spurs.

Latest Tottenham news

It's been quite a hectic week in north London with many changes occurring behind-the-scenes. Indeed, former chief scout Leonardo Gabbanini has now departed Tottenham – a man partly responsible for the club's fruitful transfer window where they brought in the in-form James Maddison and defensive regular Micky van de Ven.

Spurs chairman Daniel Levy will also apparently have a new sporting director in place "imminently" to succeed former chief Fabio Paratici, who resigned earlier this year following a 30-month worldwide ban from football.

All of this has been happening while the Lilywhites gear up for one of their biggest games of the Premier League season on Sunday. Tottenham face off against arch-rivals Arsenal in a highly-anticipated north London derby clash, as both sides go into the contest unbeaten while winning four out of their opening five top flight matches.

Ange Postecoglou, speaking ahead of a short trip across town to the Emirates Stadium, has said that his fired-up Spurs team will attempt to scare the life out of Mikel Arteta's men.

"In terms of the way we play, we're not changing, mate. We'll go out and scare the life out of them," said the 58-year-old.

"I'm well aware of obviously the [north London] rivalry and you take that into account because it means so much to supporters. Being Celtic manager, there really was only one result the supporters were interested in.

"I love that, that's the beauty of the game. It's the passion it brings. People feel like their football club is an extension of their family and they want to protect that, want to make sure every week when they go into battle we come out victors, particularly against our rivals."

Spurs player ratings 2023/2024

Tottenham's electric run of form, where they have displayed a dazzling, new-look attacking style under Postecoglou, looks to have reinvigorated sections of the Spurs fanbase while vastly improving on Antonio Conte's regrettable final season in charge.

The star players have arguably been Maddison, Pape Matar Sarr, Yves Bissouma, Son Heung-min and Dejan Kulusevski among others.

However, former Arsenal striker Wright has told his Wrighty’s House Podcast that one player in young left-back Destiny Udogie deserves far more credit.

The Italian, who signed for Spurs last summer but only just moved to London this year, following a 22/23 loan spell at Udinese, has apparently gone under the radar.

Destiny Udogie

“You know someone who has to get some love as well for going under the radar, Udogie," explained Wright (as transcribed by Spurs Web).

"You watch Spurs and they have put together some players that you look at and think it’s a team that are shutting up everything. He has given them a stability and a progression of the ball that is very impressive. The man is going under the radar. I cannot wait to see this guy, I can’t wait to see him live.”

The 20-year-old has come straight into Postecoglou's first team despite his tender age, starting all five of their league matches so far has registering two assists (WhoScored).
