Chapman, Seifert set for New Zealand debuts

New Zealand have responded to three consecutive T20I defeats by making two changes to their batting for the remainder of the tri-series involving England and Australia

ESPNcricinfo staff07-Feb-2018Batsman Mark Chapman and wicketkeeper Tim Seifert have been called up to New Zealand’s T20 squad as they aim to revive their tri-series campaign following the opening-match drubbing at the hands of Australia in Sydney.Chapman, 23, was born in Hong Kong and has played two ODIs and 19 T20Is for them but qualifies for New Zealand through his father. A left-hand batsman, Chapman has been pushing hard for a call-up this season with prolific white-ball form and replaces Tom Bruce. He scored 307 runs with a strike-rate of 171.50 in the Super Smash and is the leading run-scorer in the Ford Trophy by a distance on 433 (as of February 7).New Zealand squad

The uncapped Seifert, also 23, will take over the wicketkeeping role from Tom Blundell who himself replaced fellow wicketkeeper Glenn Phillips during the series against Pakistan in what is becoming a revolving position in New Zealand’s T20 side as they seek a long-term successor to Luke Ronchi. He also enjoyed a strong Super Smash with 323 runs at a strike-rate of 146.81. Seifert and Chapman scored two of the three centuries made in this year’s tournament.”Mark has been very consistent over the past couple of seasons and has taken his game to another level in recent times,” selector Gavin Larsen said. “His ability to hit the ball in all areas makes him a real threat and we’ve seen in the domestic competition some of the power he possesses.”Bruce made 3 against Australia before top-edging Billy Stanlake having scored 26, 11 and 22 in the series against Pakistan. Blundell came in at No. 6 in that match after New Zealand’s early problems and his omission is partly a knock-on effect of Bruce being dropped.”It’s hard on Tom Blundell, but with Tom Bruce not in the squad we wanted to inject some further power into that middle order and Tim has shown he’s one the most dynamic in the country at that,” Larsen said. “We have some strong options with the gloves at the moment, but it’s about what best complements the rest of the squad and we think that’s Tim for this series.”Seamer Seth Rance also drops out of the squad that flew to Sydney, leaving Ben Wheeler as the pace back-up to Tim Southee and Trent Boult.New Zealand limped to 117 for 9 at the SCG, with only Colin de Grandhomme coming to terms with conditions as he made 38 off 24 balls, and will resume their tri-series campaign against England in Wellington on Saturday. Australia have set the early pace in the tournament, following their victory against New Zealand with a win over England in Hobart.

Lancashire complete jigsaw with Mennie signing

Lancashire have signed Australia pace bowler Joe Mennie as their overseas player for the majority of the 2018 season.Mennie, 29, who has played one Test and two ODIs for Australia, will bolster an attack that lost Kyle Jarvis and Ryan McLaren at the end of the 2017 season and play across all three formats although he won’t be available for the final three Championship matches in September.Mennie’s signature completes Lancashire’s off-season recruitment following the signings of Graham Onions and Keaton Jennings from Durham and Australia allrounder James Faulkner for the T20 Blast.”It was really important that we brought in a high-quality overseas player to the club who has good availability and this is exactly what we’ve got with Joe as he’ll be involved in all three competitions throughout the season,” Lancashire head coach Glen Chapple said.”It was vital that we bolstered our fast bowling ranks within the squad after the departures of Kyle Jarvis and Ryan McLaren at the end of last season. We have now done that with the signing of Joe and Graham who will complement our current group of home-grown fast bowlers.”Joe will add quality to our squad and we believe his bowling style will suit English pitches and conditions. We’ve heard only good things about his character and personality and we’re confident that he will slot straight into the changing room when he arrives.”Mennie’s one-off Test appearance was a tough affair against South Africa at Hobart in November 2016 when Australia were bundled out for 85 on their way to a series defeat. Mennie took one wicket, that of Temba Bavuma, before being one of the players cast aside by the significant changes which followed that heavy loss. However, he has 200 first-class wickets at 26.17 – including 51 at 21.21 in the 2016 season – often operating in the favourable batting conditions of his home ground of the Adelaide Oval.

VAR Blunder? Referee Reacts To Hojlund Penalty Incident In Arsenal vs Man United

Having already lost once in North London this season, suffering a surprise defeat against Tottenham Hotspur, the last thing Manchester United would have wanted to do is leave the capital with the sour taste of zero points once more. Yet, come full-time at The Emirates, that's exactly what happened.

Erik ten Hag's side initially looked on course to complete a classic smash and grab on away turf, with Marcus Rashford scoring the opening goal, only for Martin Odegaard to hand Arsenal an instant response.

Going back and forth in the second-half, referee Anthony Taylor played a large part, overturning a decision to award Arsenal a penalty and ruling out Alejandro Garnacho's late goal.

This allowed Declan Rice the chance to score the winning goal in the 96th minute, before Gabriel Jesus added the cherry on top in the 11th minute of stoppage time.

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag was left frustrated with the result and the refereeing display, which Dermot Gallagher has since discussed.

What did Dermot Gallagher say?

Instead of focusing on just Garnacho's ruled out goal, and Taylor's decision to overturn a penalty won for Arsenal by Kai Havertz, Gallagher looked at an incident in which substitute and debutant Rasmus Hojlund hit the deck when up against Gabriel Magalhaes inside the area.

The former referee however was baffled by Ten Hag's comments that it should have been a spot kick, saying on Sky Sports: "Physical contact, but I think the defender's just too strong. I think he pushes the ball too far, and the defender just holds his ground, and doesn't do anything wrong. You see this all the time, and I'd have been stunned if Anthony Taylor had given a penalty for it."

Ten Hag had a different opinion on the matter, saying after his side's defeat, via The Metro: "I think we played a very good game but I think everything went against us. With a little more luck we win the game.

"It is not offside [for Garnacho’s goal]. Wrong angle. It is a penalty on Hojlund. And when we concede a goal, it is a foul on Jonny Evans. It is so clear and obvious. But it was a step forward and I’m happy with the performance."

How have Manchester United performed this season?

United are yet to really get going after four Premier League games this season, and the warning signs were there from the off when they just about overcame the visit of Wolverhampton Wanderers.

The Red Devils followed their defeat of Wolves with a deserved loss against Tottenham Hotspur, before enjoying a lucky escape against Nottingham Forest, picking up all three points despite conceding twice in the first four minutes at Old Trafford.

Truth be told, another loss always looked on the horizon, and Ten Hag's side got exactly that against Arsenal. And, whilst some decisions failed to fall United's way, to say that Arsenal deserved all three points would be a fair statement.

Now, the Manchester club must turn their attention to using the international break to fix their mounting issues. If they fail to solve their current problems, then their next game, coming against Brighton & Hove Albion, could end in another defeat.

Leeds: Farke could bin £50k-p/w dud after signing Glen Kamara

Leeds United were forced to act promptly when Deadline Day came around, such was the unrelenting unpredictability of Daniel Farke’s first summer in charge at Elland Road.

Having overseen the departure of no less than 15 players, it could have been a crisis that the Whites failed to deal with after the crushing blow that relegation provided. However, they remained relatively incisive in the market, spending wisely when necessary and bringing in nine players of their own.

Despite that, it was their final day of the window that saw the most business, as they sealed deals for three new signings, two of whom are poised to revolutionise a midfield already stacked before their arrival.

Ethan Ampadu and Archie Gray have struck a fine partnership since the new campaign began, blending youth, energy and experience to offer one of few shining lights given they have won just once in their opening five Championship matches.

However, there could be some major alterations now made in order to turn that form around, with the Wales international set to be the catalyst for such a change.

After all, his versatility lends to such a switch, which could see new signing Glen Kamara take his place in the engine room whilst the former Chelsea man moves into centre-back, where he has featured for much of his career.

Why did Leeds United sign Glen Kamara?

With their interest in the Finland international one which seemingly lasted throughout the entire window, it was a refreshing change of pace to see the Yorkshire outfit actually get their man after weeks of trying.

Glasgow Rangers midfielder Glen Kamara.

Joining for what was thought to be a £5.5m fee from Rangers, the 27-year-old brings a wealth of experience alongside unparalleled quality for this level, as a tireless midfield general with a history of pushing forward to contribute to attacks too.

After all, during the 2021/22 Scottish Premiership season, Kamara maintained a 7.01 average rating, buoyed by his 91% pass accuracy, three goals and three assists alongside 1.3 key passes and one tackle per game, via Sofascore.

When on form, there is little the former Dundee man cannot do, which makes his potential presence beside Gray so exciting.

The 17-year-old has taken to the challenge of Championship football with ease, as a combative midfielder with the ability to pick a pass too. The defensive foundation he offers could allow Kamara to recapture that form that saw him lauded.

Former boss Steven Gerrard has often been the first to praise the 5 foot 11 ace, who he actually brought to Ibrox: “He was a class act the other night, I thought he was superb from start to finish. Without Alfredo's goals he would certainly have been man of the match.

ethan-ampadu

"It was nice to see midfielders taking the ball off the guys at the back and making us tick. Glen connected the game really well. He was also very aggressive out of possession and that's where I believe he can keep improving and moving forward and become an even better player than he is now.”

Then, the midfielder would give his own reasons for trading Scotland for England in his first interview: ”I’ve been at Glasgow Rangers for four-and-a-half years now and I feel I just needed a change in my career and Leeds is the perfect place to kick-start my career again.

“Last season was quite tough for me personally, but I can’t wait to get going now, we have a great manager and fanbase here, along with good players.”

One benefit that this aforementioned reshuffle could offer is to finally rid the starting line-up of Pascal Struijk, who has remained in the side despite his consistently poor performances last season as they fell to the drop.

How has Ampadu played this season?

With Ampadu taking his place in the back four, to partner Liam Cooper when fit or Joe Rodon for now, already a backline that has shipped seven goals in five games would be bolstered, whilst also placing an incisive passer at centre-back.

With the added time on the ball the Welshman would receive in such a role, perhaps he could elevate his 1.2 key passes per game to new heights from deeper.

After all, during his recent loan spell at Spezia where he featured in defence, he was the sole shining light for his side that also ended up being relegated from Serie A, as his 6.91 average rating was the highest of anyone else within the squad.

That was a figure upheld by his 1.2 interceptions, 2.1 tackles and three clearances per game, via Sofascore.

How has Pascal Struijk played this season?

To compare this with Struijk from last term, there is little competition.

pascal-struijk

The Dutchman maintained a 6.75 average Sofascore rating of his own as he proved to be one of many defensive liabilities within a side that shipped 78 goals, the most of anyone in the Premier League. He also would clumsily give away two penalties, and make another error that directly led to goal.

One particularly poor showing saw him lambasted by former Newcastle United and England legend Alan Shearer, who told Match of the Day (28 May):

“Defensively, they’ve been an embarrassment. Some of the defending today was under-10s level, let alone in the Premier League. Yes, Tottenham have some really good players – particularly in forward positions – but when you’re seeing errors like this [footage of Struijk], basic errors.

“It was mistake after mistake, after mistake. It’s happened all season. 78 goals they’ve conceded. It’s embarrassing"

Whilst he might have started this new season slightly better, the £50k-per-week dud has already done enough damage to the club to continue being trusted as one of the starting pillars of their backline. Especially when these fresh signings make it so easy to shift personnel around to negate his importance at the back.

This Championship campaign has seen him maintain a 6.94 average rating, which whilst on the surface might seem solid, makes him the 14th-best within the squad, via Sofascore.

It still remains to be seen whether he has managed to recover from such a trying term most recently, given they are yet to receive a truly tough test for this level.

Perhaps the tactical shift in question could mark the perfect way to get all of their best players within the starting lineup, making each position stronger as Farke flexes his managerial muscle to rid his side of potential liabilities.

Mikel Arteta Goes On Big Rant To Defend £65m Arsenal Star

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has delivered an impassioned defence of summer signing Kai Havertz when speaking about the German in a recent press conference.

What's the latest on Arsenal and Kai Havertz?

It's not exactly been the easiest start to life for the 24-year-old in North London. Indeed, it's easy to get the sense that many of his new supporters aren't particularly happy with the big £65m transfer fee handed to rivals Chelsea in exchange for the player.

After all, the Emirates let out a "cry of frustration" after Havertz misplaced a pass in the Gunners' recent 2-2 draw with Fulham, showing how little patience the fans already have for the summer signing.

Having failed to impress on that most recent Premier League outings, the German has now played three games (plus an appearance in the Community Shield) without claiming either a goal or an assist for Arsenal.

With all that in mind, there appear to be doubts over the player already and manager Arteta has tried to deal with this by urging the club to show more "love" for Havertz as he finds his feet in his new surroundings.

Indeed, when speaking to the press this week (via The Mirror), he said: “It’s difficult to ask more of our supporters and our people, but my feeling is give him love and we’ll get the best out of him. I think we have some very beautiful examples in the last years with players that we have given a lot of support and got behind them, and they have felt that love and they just exploded.‌

“I will stick to that because not everyone is going to be willing Arsenal to do well, but the ones that have their heart and soul in this club want the best for the club. So let’s do it because there’s a lot there for him to give us.”

As you can see in further footage circulated on Twitter, he then listed a number of other Arsenal players who took time to settle as well, saying: “It’s more than [Martin] Odegaard. And with Gabriel Magalhaes it was the same, and Ben White could not play as a full-back, Aaron Ramsdale wasn’t good enough for Arsenal and now we have signed another keeper and it is a catastrophe! Bukayo Saka was a left-back and now he’s a right wing. Granit Xhaka….we have so many good examples. But the players have to love what they do and they do that when they feel supported.

Finally, on Havertz, he added: ‌“His football brain, how he understands when to move, how to move, when to stay, when to run, it’s phenomenal. We are talking about a player who has already won and done a lot at his age and he’s played three Premier League games, so… calm.”

What happened with Kai Havertz?

Interestingly enough, Arteta isn't the only one to defend Havertz in recent times. Indeed, former Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand recently slammed Arsenal fans for their lack of patience.

He explained: “You guys [Arsenal fans] are all over the place. With Havertz, I understand that he might not have hit the ground running, bit like Mason Mount at Man United

"But the way that you guys are absolutely like: ‘get him out’, I don’t get it. If it was 10, 15 games, do you know what, I could see what they’re saying.

"But it’s three games you know. People need time to adjust.”

Of course, Havertz has replaced Granit Xhaka in the Arsenal lineup, so it might take him time to get used to a different midfield role but some of the underlying stats actually suggest he'd doing a better job than many realise.

After all, as you can see in the graphic below – shared on Twitter by statistician Scott Willis using data from Opta via Fbref – the German is actually outperforming his Swiss counterpart in a number of attacking areas such as goal probability added, open play key passes, progressive carries.

On top of that, he's also doing well defensively with more aerial duels won, ball recoveries made, and less fouls committed than Xhaka – albeit from a small sample size.

Southampton Readying Move To Bring In "Really Important" Premier League Ace

Southampton boss Russell Martin looks set to court a highly-rated defender to replace Tino Livramento at St Mary's Stadium before the transfer window closes, according to reports.

What's the latest Southampton news?

Saints have slowly edged themselves into the transfer window and are now looking to put the finishing touches to their squad before the close of play following the additions of Shea Charles, Joe Lumley, Ryan Manning and Flynn Downes on loan from West Ham United, as per Transfermarkt.

Big-name departures have also been a feature for Southampton over the course of the last couple of months due to their relegation to the Sky Bet Championship as James Ward-Prowse, Romeo Lavia and Mohammed Salisu – alongside Livramento – have left the South Coast club in favour of seeking a new challenge elsewhere.

Everton were said to be keen on Southampton striker Che Adams; however, talkSPORT claim on X that the Toffees have been unable to agree fee for the Scotland international, stating: "BREAKING: EFC are in talks with Udinese over a move for Brazilian striker Beto. The goal-shy Toffees have also tabled two bids for SaintsFC’s Che Adams, but have so far been unable to agree a deal. – talkSPORT sources understand."

If Adams were to go, Southampton did have designs on submitting a bid for Swansea City striker Joel Piroe as a potential replacement; nevertheless, transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has since reported that the Dutchman is on his way to Leeds United to undergo a medical ahead of a switch to Elland Road.

As per BBC Sport, Swansea City defender Nathan Wood has been the subject of a rejected offer from an unnamed club and Jacks boss Michael Duff has refused to confirm the source of the proposal, as he stated: "I think there's a bid that got rejected. It's a sign of having good players. If no-one was bidding for any of the players, we'd be useless. We think we've got some good players, Woody's another one of those."

Who else could Southampton sign?

According to Football Insider, Southampton have enquired about signing West Ham United defender Ben Johnson as boss Martin seeks to fill the void left by Livramento at right-back.

Johnson has previously rejected a contract extension at the Hammers and features near the top of Southampton's wanted list for the remainder of the window amid uncertainty over his future at the London Stadium.

Ben Johnson West Ham

The 23-year-old, who was labelled as a "really important" player by West Ham boss David Moyes back in 2021, featured 29 times in all competitions for his current employers last term, registering a solitary assist in the process, as per Transfermarkt.

Compared to his positional peers across Europe's top five divisions, Johnson has fared well regarding the art of successful aerial duels, winning an average of 1.75 per 90 minutes across the last 365 days, putting him in the 91st percentile for this metric, according to FBRef.

Clearly, Johnson is in need of regular first-team football to keep his career trajectory moving in the right direction and a move to the South Coast may help the London-born defender to realise these aspirations.

Du Preez, Wolvaardt, Ismail deny India ODI whitewash

While Laura Wolvaardt and Mignon du Preez played protagonists in South Africa’s first win in the three-match series, captain Dane van Niekerk’s cameo and India’s sloppy fielding aided the hosts’ seven-wicket triumph

India’s quest for a maiden bilateral series whitewash against South Africa was thwarted by the hosts with a resounding seven-wicket win in Potchefstroom. Laura Wolvaardt and Mignon du Preez, who both struck half-centuries, played protagonists in South Africa’s first win in the three-match series, aided by a brisk 41-run cameo from captain Dane van Niekerk and India’s sloppiness in the end overs of their 240-run defence.Needing 63 off the last nine overs, and the fourth-wicket stand between du Preez and Niekerk worth only nine runs, Shikha Pandey dropped a Niekerk force at mid-off off the first ball of the 42nd over. Four balls later, legspinner Poonam Yadav gave herself a chance of picking up her second wicket and India a shot at sending back du Preez, only to be squandered by wicketkeeper Sushma Verma in the form of a missed stumping. When Poonam came back in the 44th to bowl her ninth over, she dropped a return catch off van Niekerk, who subsequently unleashed a flurry of drives and sweeps – some while falling on her knee – and peppered the square-leg boundary for quick runs. She totaled five fours in her unbeaten 30-ball innings, while routinely capitalising on overthrows from India in the back-end of the chase.Van Niekerk’s ingenuity amounted to a 72-run stand with du Preez, who anchored the chase with an unbeaten 111-ball 90 that steered a 118-run third-wicket partnership with 18-year-old Wolvaardt. Coming into the game on the back of scores 9 and 21 in the previous two ODIs, Wolvaardt weathered the early loss of opening partner Lizelle Lee, and put on 41 runs with Andrie Steyn (30 off 53) en route to her 88-ball 59. In doing so, Wolvaardt became the youngest South African to notch up 1000 runs in ODI cricket. After Ekta Bisht removed Wolvaardt, du Preez kept the chase on track with plucky singles, including the one that sealed the chase with four balls to spare.Out of the three changes made to India’s winning combination from the previous two matches, debutant Pooja Vastrakar, the teenage medium-pacer who came in for Jhulan Goswami, and Bisht, who replaced fellow left-arm spinner Rajeshwari Gayakwad, leaked 77 runs between them for a solitary wicket in their combined 18 overs. The other change – in the batting department – Mona Meshram, who came in for Punam Raut, pinched 11 in her 22-ball labour during an India innings that blew hot and cold in their 240-run effort. While Smriti Mandhana, the Player of the Series, followed her 135 and 84 with a duck, captain Mithali Raj fell for a 24-ball 4 as both found themselves in the middle of a blistering opening burst from Ayabonga Khaka and Shabnim Ismail, who topped and tailed her 9-1-30-4 with the wickets of Mandhana and tailender Bisht. Deepti Sharma, however, validated Raj’s decision to promote her to the opening role with a 112-ball 79. After van Niekerk brought Harmanpreet Kaur’s 35-ball 25 to an end, Deepti steadied India’s innings with an 83-run stand with Veda Krishnamurthy, becoming the youngest Indian to get to the 1000-run mark in women’s ODIs.Krishnamurthy, meanwhile, added urgency to the innings with a quick-paced second straight fifty, before a run-a-ball 17 from Verma and 31-run blitz from Pandey hoisted India to 240 as the hosts bowled them out off the last ball of the innings, concluded by part-time bowler Chloe Tryon who took two wickets in her 10 overs.

Leeds could have signed prolific £18m Rutter upgrade

Leeds United comfortably endured one of the most tumultuous summers of those within the Championship, but have come out the other side with a squad certainly capable of challenging at the top of the table…

Who did Leeds nearly sign?

Daniel Farke operated well despite all the turmoil he had inherited, as whilst he made nine key additions, these signings were marred by the 15 departures, many of which had previously been first-team regulars.

Phil Hay put it best on social media when he wrote: “At one point in the summer, a senior figure at Leeds was heard to say that “everyone wants to leave” – which was pretty much how it was.”

So, to be stood in early September with a team largely filled with quality that has featured at a level above their current one should mark a success worth championing, even if they have only won once in their opening five league games.

Read the latest Leeds transfer news HERE…

However, Saturday did mark a crushing realisation that they probably did miss a trick with one failed signing, as they did reportedly hold an interest in former Aston Villa forward Cameron Archer at various points throughout the summer without acting.

Therefore, it was Sheffield United who eventually won the race for his signature, with his showing against Everton enough to start paying back that lofty £18m price tag.

How good is Cameron Archer?

Whilst many were well aware of the 21-year-old’s goalscoring pedigree well before this weekend, his consistent quality and the threat he posed to the Toffees showcased his talents at a much higher level than he had previously thrived in.

cameron-archer

Having fallen behind, the Blades hit back as Archer’s arrowed finish on 33 minutes drew them level. Then, as they pushed for another, he unleashed a splendid curling effort which rebounded off the right post, struck Jordan Pickford and found the back of the net. Although not his goal, it was wholly of his creation.

His involvement in both of their only goals for the day outlined the budding importance he is set to enjoy at Bramall Lane, as he seeks to build on an outstanding loan spell last season where he scored 11 and assisted six in 20 Championship games for Middlesbrough.

It is no surprise that renowned scout Jacek Kulig lauded him as “incredibly prolific” throughout that spell, a trait that Farke would love to transfer onto his current crop of players.

What makes his particularly impressive display even more frustrating is the profligate one endured at Elland Road just after Sheffield United were held to a 2-2 draw, as the Whites failed to find the net against newly-promoted Sheffield Wednesday at home.

Deploying Joel Piroe in a deeper role, despite having been signed as their new star forward, he was not there to score the countless chances they forged. In fact, having enjoyed 67% of the ball and rained down 16 shots, they missed all of the three big chances they created, via Sofascore.

Considering two of those were squandered by Georginio Rutter, who has admittedly struggled since making his club-record move in January, it seems that the Englishman would have marked far greater business.

The French youngster has scored just once across 18 games for the club, and yesterday posted a 6.5 Sofascore rating that was the worst of any of Leeds' starters.

Their failure to capture such a lethal finisher like Archer was exposed brutally yesterday, as he thrived in front of goal whilst Farke’s side pushed to break the deadlock in their game, with no success.
