Arsenal must unleash Emile Smith Rowe against Molde in the Europa League

After spending the second-half of last season on loan at Championship side Huddersfield, Emile Smith Rowe has been waiting for his chance to shine under Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta.

Described as a “fantastic talent”, the academy product has yet to make a competitive appearance under the Spaniard, but given the Gunners’ creative issues – they have managed just nine goals in nine Premier League games – a space for someone like Smith Rowe is surely there.

Capable of playing on either flank, but perhaps most comfortable playing in a more central no.8 or n0.10 position, the 20-year-old offers something completely different to arguably anyone else in the current squad.

His ability to play off both feet, and receive passes on the turn make him a dangerous attacking midfielder that is difficult for the opposition to really pick up and close down.

Former Arsenal player, Adrian Clarke, waxed lyrical about the youngster, declaring: “The first time I clapped eyes on Emile Smith Rowe, there was one player that immediately came to my mind and this is a huge compliment to Emile Smith Rowe and it is Kevin De Bruyne.

“He just looks a little bit like him when he is on the ball, he’s got that dynamism, he’s a box-to-box midfielder that is very, very creative and able to beat his man and drive forward. He whips a good cross in, he’s an excellent passer.”

With the Gunners travelling to take on Molde in the Europa League on Thursday, Arteta has the perfect chance to see for himself whether Smith Rowe has the potential to be Arsenal’s own De Bruyne in the long-term.

Arteta of course has worked with the Belgian superstar before in his time at Manchester City, and will know all about the qualities that the talisman has.

By giving Smith Rowe an opportunity to impress on Thursday, he could be pleasantly surprised, and even see him as a possible solution to the side’s struggles in the Premier League too.

Marcelo Bielsa should unleash Jamie Shackleton at Leeds

Leeds United are back in the Premier League after a 16-year absence and with the new season only two weeks away, things are looking pretty good.

Victor Orta has secured a new striker in Rodrigo from Valencia as well as a potential Ben White successor in Robin Koch but squad depth will be vital amongst the big dogs this campaign.

If reports are to be believed, then the Yorkshire giants are also closing in on the audacious signing of Udinese midfielder Rodrigo De Paul, and his addition would make the engine room one of the most competitive positions under Bielsa.

Pablo Hernandez, Mateusz Klich, Stuart Dallas, Kalvin Phillips and Adam Forshaw are all senior choices without the Uruguayan.

But the Leeds chief mustn’t forget about some of his younger, homegrown talents and in particular Jamie Shackleton, who we managed to catch a glimpse of at the back end of last season.

In reality, he’s no stranger to those at Elland Road as he’s only two appearances shy of the 50 mark for the club and perhaps unfairly, he’s about to slip down the pecking order once more.

However, Bielsa ought to give him a chance in the top-flight as he could be a valuable second fiddle to the 35-year-old veteran Hernandez. Tyler Roberts isn’t a number ten, so it’s time that experiment stops.

Shackleton only started five matches last term but in the final two games of the season, the 20-year-old delivered two goals and recorded fours shots, three tackles and one key pass, via WhoScored.

The young midfielder has even picked up plenty of praise throughout his short career to date, ranging from Bielsa dubbing him “influential” to former Kippax coach Nigel Birch highlighting him as “really brave”.

Leeds must have faith in Shackleton after tying him down to a four-year extension last month, so it’s time for the shackles to come off and for him to be let loose.

That’s not to say he should be starting, but at the very least he should be Hernandez’s #2 rather than putting a square peg in a round hole. That exposure would help his potential tenfold.

AND in other news, Leeds could land their next Rio Ferdinand with swoop for “big prospect”…

Gayfield Park

Key information about Gayfield Park

Gayfield Park was originally built in 1880 and is now the home of Scottish Championship’s side Arbroath FC. The ground is located beside the North Sea, close to the Arbroath Harbour, and was actually replaced by a new stadium going by the same name in 1925.

Its current maximum capacity stands at 6,488, 861 of which are seated, and it has a pitch that measures 105m by 65m. The surface is covered with grass and it has no running track surrounding it.

The record attendance of 13,510 supporters at Gayfield Park was set on 23 February 1952 when Arbroath faced Glasgow Rangers.

A history of Gayfield Park

Back when Arbroath FC were formed in 1878, they first played their football at Woodville Park and Hospitalfield before actually buying the site that was initially a former rubbish tip on the seafront of the town. And by 1880, their new home, Gayfield Park, was ready to be introduced to the world.

The very first game to be played at the new venue was a clash against Rob Roy in the Scottish Cup but even though the ground was brand new and still an improvement on their previous facilities, it was very cramped and bigger teams such as Glasgow Rangers were not happy campers whenever they had to visit Arbroath.

But that sometimes worked in their favour since it was at Gayfield Park the club recorded the biggest ever victory in an official match, beating Bon Accord in the Scottish Cup 36-0. In 1921, Arbroath finally entered the Scottish Football League, moving up in the world and playing the first League game at Gayfield Park against Johnstone.

Around that time was when the first talk of potentially constructing a brand new ground was first brought to light in a project dubbed ‘Greater Gayfield’. In 1925, those ideas were also realised and it also led to the pitch being moved 60 yards with the halfway line now becoming the goal line. This also enabled them to erect a stand along Dundee Road.

The new ground, also called Gayfield Park, was opened on 29 August against East Fife and relatively soon after that, Arbroath would also record their highest ever attendance of 13,510 fans when Rangers returned in February 1952. Of course, over the years, the capacity would shrink to its current 6,488 due to safety reasons and this also means the record is highly unlikely to be broken any time soon.

In 1955, the club installed floodlights and three years later, the main stand was destroyed by fire and it would take Arbroath until 2002 to finally replace it with a new one. That one would also get redeveloped and improved in 2010. It is simply known as the Gayfield Main Stand and is the only all-seated area of the ground.

The other sides of the stadium are all terraces of similar size and look. Whenever the away fans have to be segregated from the home supporters, they are usually allocated to the pleasureland stand End and half of the East Terrace, which can also be reduced to just the former area if necessary.

Tickets to watch Arbroath FC at Gayfield Park

All tickets to watch Arbroath FC play at Gayfield Park can be found on the club’s official website. The adult ticket will cost you £18 while children and concessions can get theirs for £10. There is also an option to buy an adult and child ticket as a bundle for £20.

The club also offers season tickets and adults can get one for a price of £220.

Profit Players: Burnley picked up a bargain when signing Nick Pope in 2016

This article forms part of our Profit Players feature series, which is where Football Transfer Tavern takes a look at how well a player has fared since being signed or sold, using statistical figures and statements from pundits to prove how good of a deal the club managed to achieve.

If patience is a virtue, then they don’t come much more virtuous than Nick Pope. The goalkeeper was loaned out by Charlton no fewer than seven times in four years before finally getting a prolonged run in the first team during the 2015/16 season. The Addicks were relegated from the Championship at the end of that campaign and Pope duly left the division…except he went the other way, joining up with newly-promoted Burnley in the Premier League (as per BBC).

Sean Dyche snapped up the ‘keeper for a mere £1.17m (as per TransferMarkt) and, having only had a half-season as Charlton’s first choice, he was again left to rely on piecemeal snippets of domestic cup action in his first year at Turf Moor, with Tom Heaton the go-to netminder for league games. Pope managed just four appearances in the 2016/17 campaign, all in the EFL Cup or FA Cup.

However, when Heaton got injured in the early weeks of the following season, the ex-Addicks goalkeeper found himself thrust into action and enjoyed an “excellent” full Premier League debut in a 1-1 draw away to Liverpool. He kept his place for the rest of the campaign and was beaten just 35 times in as many league games, achieving 12 clean sheets as the Clarets finished seventh to qualify for Europe.

Pope’s performances earned him a place in England’s 2018 World Cup squad and an international debut against Costa Rica just before the tournament. He was part of the squad that went on to reach the semi-finals, although he didn’t feature during the finals in Russia, with Jordan Pickford getting the nod from Gareth Southgate.

Unfortunately, just as long-term injury struck Heaton in 2017, the same fate befell Pope the following year. He dislocated his shoulder in Burnley’s first Europa League qualifier against Aberdeen and was ruled out for nearly six months, in the end playing only three matches all season as Dyche resorted to bringing in Joe Hart.

Pope’s rollercoaster career took another upward turn, though, after Heaton departed for Aston Villa last summer. The Soham native reclaimed his status as Burnley’s number one goalkeeper and he has thrived for the Clarets this season, playing in all of their Premier League games and keeping a league-high 14 clean sheets. He is also in the top four goalkeepers in the division this term for saves made, proving to be an imposing last line of defence for Dyche’s team.

He was outstanding in last week’s draw at Anfield, the venue where his Clarets career took flight back in 2017, making no fewer than eight saves to end Liverpool’s perfect home record in this season’s Premier League.

Rachel Brown-Finnis, a long-serving goalkeeper for the England women’s team, said on BT Sport [via Lancashire Live] after the game that the 28-year-old is the best English shot-stopper in the top flight and should be his country’s number one at the European Championship next year instead of Pickford.

On current form, it’s hard to disagree with her. Pope has had peaks and troughs during his Burnley career but, with the distinct possibility of him being Southgate’s go-to goalkeeper next summer, the £1.17m that the Clarets paid for him four years ago now looks like chickenfeed.

Tottenham Hotspur: Inter Milan ready to resume talks over Tanguy Ndombele with Spurs after Europa League

Tanguy Ndombele’s future at Tottenham Hotspur has come under intense scrutiny after reports of a bust-up with Spurs boss Jose Mourinho emerged in recent months.Â

The 23-year-old has endured a difficult first season at Tottenham after his club-record arrival from Lyon last year.

Recent reports revealed that Spurs are in negotiations to sell Ndombele to Inter Milan this summer. However,ÂDaniel Levy has insisted that the six-cap France international is not for sale despite falling out of favour with Mourinho.

Also, Inter Milan are interested in other Premier League targets such as Manchester United duo Chris Smalling and Jesse Lingard as Antonio Conte seeks to make several changes to his squad.

However, Fabrizio Romano suggested that there will be further updates following the conclusion of the Europa League campaign.

According to the Italian transfer expert (via @TheSpursExpress), the Serie A giants are ready to resume talks with Spurs to sort out a deal for the Frenchman in the summer. It is understood that the Lilywhites will let Ndombele leave north London as long as a club meets their valuation.

The Spurs chairman has reportedly slapped a £63m price tag on his head. However, Inter are yet to submit a formal bid, and Paris Saint-Germain are not prepared to spend such a significant sum of money.

Ndombele scored two goals and supplied two assists in his first full season in the Premier League but his time in the top flight has been blighted by injury and fitness problems, as well as a change in management, which could be enough to unsettle anyone.

He may be able to turn his career around should he given the chance to do so, but it is up to Mourinho to get the best out of a player who was once described as one of Europe’s best prospects.

The summer transfer window is set to close at 11pm on October 5, so Inter still have plenty of time left to strike a deal with Levy.

Tottenham fans, do you think Levy should sell Ndombele in the summer? Let us know your views in the comments below!

Newcastle’s Steve Bruce receives backing from Charlie Nicholas

Newcastle have been inconsistent under Steve Bruce but Charlie Nicholas has defended him as he is accomplishing his goal of keeping his team safe from relegation.

What did he say?

The Sky Sports pundit predicts that the Magpies will beat Crystal Palace 2-1 this weekend and although that will please fans, some supporters may not like hearing what else he has to say about the club.

Newcastle did well in recent weeks to pick up points against Manchester City and Sheffield United but an abysmal display against Burnley demonstrated that there is a lot of work to do, with zero shots on target achieved.

Despite that, Nicholas has faith in Bruce’s abilities, so much so that he thinks his team will return to winning ways despite missing Allan Saint-Maximin, while Miguel Almiron and Jonjo Shelvey are doubts, having missed the clash against the Clarets.

Writing in his Premier League predictions for Sky Sports, Nicholas said:

“Newcastle are there to survive in the Premier League, and they are four or five wins from doing it already, which is a testament to the results they have earned this campaign.

“Steve Bruce has done a remarkable job, but it is about trying to hold a unit together, and I think he will do that again this weekend.”

The former Arsenal striker also touched upon Miguel Almiron, stating that the team needs his pace and movement due to the absence of their other skilful winger.

Not what fans want to hear

Some supporters were against Bruce since day one and there are still large portions of the fanbase who oppose him due to the idea that he is a “yes man” to Mike Ashley.

He, therefore, faces a difficult task to win them round and will need more than a few good results to achieve that, mainly because the style of football he has implemented is far from pleasant on the eye.

The claim he is doing a “remarkable job” will probably not be warmly greeted by fans, particularly as Nicholas also suggests that the club can expect little more than to survive year after year.

A football legend: Can you get over 80% on this Gazza quiz? Find out now…

It is exactly that lack of ambition which frustrates supporters so much and why many want Ashley and Bruce out of the club, as they both represent an ethos of a side treading above water.

Currently, the Magpies are taking one step forward and two steps back, with performances such as the one last weekend rightly unacceptable to fans, and with Crystal Palace operating in a similar style to Sean Dyche’s side they could pose problems for Bruce and Newcastle as well.

Elsewhere, with Newcastle reportedly interested in Everton’s Mason Holgate our team of Football FanCast writers gave their verdicts on whether he’d be a good addition.

Leeds fans drool over Mateusz Klich’s display

After stumbling to a 1-1 draw against Luton last time out, Leeds got back to winning ways in impressive fashion with a 3-1 triumph over Blackburn on Saturday afternoon.

And one of the stand-out performers on the day was undoubtedly Mateusz Klich.

The Poland international has been an ever-present for Marcelo Bielsa’s side this season, making 43 appearances across all competitions, and his performance against Blackburn was up there with one of his best.

As per Sofascore, his 7.7 match rating was the highest of any player on the pitch, and with his goal and assist, it’s no surprise why. Klich also completed 80% of his passes, made two interceptions, and provided a further two key passes.

And after seeing his display, Leeds fans flooded to Twitter to share their reactions.

A couple of Leeds fans suggested that Klich’s performance showed that he is back to his absolute best.

So with just five games to go, Leeds have taken another big step towards clinching automatic promotion with their win over Blackburn.

Spurs must ignore Gareth Bale’s quotes

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Opinion series, which provides analysis, insight and opinion on any issue within the beautiful game, from Paul Pogba’s haircuts to League Two relegation battles…

Gareth Bale appears to be fluttering his eyelashes at Tottenham Hotspur.

The Real Madrid superstar gave an interview to BT Sport in which he hailed the club’s appointment of Jose Mourinho and backed them to win silverware sooner rather than later.

He said: “Having [Jose] Mourinho there is an amazing statement from the club, I think he’s a serial winner.

“Tottenham want to win trophies and I don’t think there’s a better partnership than Mourinho and Tottenham together to try and win some trophies.”

Forever a Spurs legend: Honour Pochettino by getting 100% on this all-Poch quiz…

AS has claimed that Spurs want to bring Bale back to the club he left for Real in 2013, and one has to wonder whether or not that would be the best idea.

Bale’s quotes, of course, could be innocuous, or they could point towards a desire to leave the Santiago Bernabeu.

Bale, after all, has been regularly booed by the Real fans and caused controversy after posing with a flag on international duty with Wales, emblazoned with the words “Wales, Golf, Madrid, in that order”.

Spurs, though, ought to steer well clear.

This is a player who is approaching the twilight of his career – he turns 31 in July – and who has little to no resale value whatsoever.

One could see the acquisition of Bale as a potential boon for chairman Daniel Levy and he’d be right to think that – shirt sales would soar and headlines would be written, but Bale is not the player he once was.

Last season, in 29 league appearances, Bale scored eight goals in La Liga; this season he has just two to his name thus far.

This is not to mention that Spurs already have a number of options up front, not least Harry Kane and Son Heung-min, who have 22 Premier League goals between them already this term.

Regardless of what Bale says, he simply isn’t worth the money he would cost.

It is of no surprise that his only serious suitor in the summer came from China; it is instructive of his current character that he wanted to go.

Forget the romance, Spurs shouldn’t go anywhere near their former hero.

Meanwhile, Spurs fans have reacted to a new report about Mauricio Pochettino.

QPR could benefit from slight change in formation which would suit several players

This article is part of Football FanCast’s The Chalkboard series, which provides a tactical insight into teams, players, managers, potential signings and more…

Mark Warburton has shown he likes to mix up his formations and a slight change in the current system could reap big rewards.

Just yesterday we suggested that using a 4-2-3-1 could get the best out of Ryan Manning and Lee Wallace, and now we believe that a 5-2-3 is another system he should also consider using.

On the chalkboard

When Brentford comfortable dispatched the R’s a few weeks ago Warburton decided it was time to ditch the 4-2-3-1 system he had in place, but so far a return to 5-3-2 has not fixed his team’s defensive problems, with four goals conceded in two games.

As a result, it would be wise to alter his system slightly to a 5-2-3, and operate with two defensive midfielders whose primary job is to protect the defence and cut out any passes into their own final third.

Doing so should make QPR more organised and tougher to break down, but it will also have a positive effect on the forward players as it could grant them more freedom to express themselves in attack.

A forward three of Ilias Chair, Eberechi Eze and Nahki Wells would be able to interchange up-front and create chances for one another, with the wing-backs also performing their typical role, meaning QPR will be able to maintain their attacking strength.

Finding balance

At the moment it is all about finding the right balance for Warburton, but in organising his team into two separate sections he can delegate responsibility effectively.

He has the personnel at his disposal to make a success of it, too, with Geoff Cameron and Dominic Ball two defensive-minded players who are able to play in deep-lying midfield.

The attacking trio mentioned above have already proved themselves as well – Chair even grabbed an assist for Wells’ goal against Middlesbrough, and with Eze given free rein he too could wreak havoc.

Eze has already achieved more successful dribbles than any other Championship player this season and in a role which would allow him to play closer to Wells, the pair could thrive.

The striker has been key to QPR this term, and continuing his goalscoring record will be a top priority, but with two supporting teammates he should get even more chances, and that should lead to more goals.

The change in system would help Wells and the other strikers in the squad, while also addressing the big concern of the defence.
