Another ton for Jadhav but Karnataka still on course

Kedar Jadhav made use of Karnataka’s lax fields to score his sixth first-class hundred of the season, but late wickets helped Karnataka pull back

The Report by Karthik Krishnaswamy in Hyderabad01-Feb-2014
Scorecard and ball-by-ball detailsKedar Jadhav made use of the open fields to reach his 10th first-class hundred•ESPNcricinfo Ltd

Before he walked in to bat on Saturday, Kedar Jadhav had made scores of 51, 120*, 40 and 37 in his four previous innings. Across those four innings, he had scored 66.94% of his runs in fours and sixes. On Saturday, Karnataka had a plan against him. They spread their fields. At times, they had four fielders in the deep. More often, they had between five and seven men guarding the boundary.Cricket fans of the future, and those of the present who didn’t watch the match, might look at the scorecard of the 2013-14 Ranji Trophy final and imagine that Jadhav’s 135-ball 112 was a daring backs-to-the-wall counterattack full of thrilling strokes. Jadhav, though, had good reason to feel this was the easiest of his six centuries this season. When Jadhav walked in to bat, after Vijay Zol had edged Vinay to the keeper first ball after lunch, Maharashtra were 54 for 2 in their second innings.Between Zol’s dismissal and tea, Maharashtra scored 110 runs off 149 balls. Only 32 of those runs came in boundaries. At tea, they were only 46 behind, with eight wickets in hand and their two best batsmen, Jadhav and Ankit Bawne, batting on 55 and 59. Even when Bawne was on strike, Karnataka’s fields hadn’t changed in any marked way. Early in the second session, Bawne, batting on 13, had edged S Aravind for successive fours through the vacant slip region.Karnataka had meant to keep the scoring rate down. They ended up gifting easy runs to Maharashtra. They took four wickets in the final session and ended the day right on top, with Maharashtra six down with a lead of just 62, but that was by no means proof that their tactics had worked. For one, they had conceded 272 runs in 68 overs. On the third day, against Maharashtra’s more conventional defensive fields, they had scored 240 in 90. Maharashtra’s batsmen, moreover, played a large role in their own dismissals in the final session. In the second over after tea, legspinner Shreyas Gopal went around the wicket and aimed at the rough outside leg stump. Fourth ball of the over, Bawne came out of his crease a touch early, a touch too eagerly, and missed the line by yards, leaving CM Gautam an easy stumping to complete. Bawne was out for 61; he had taken 39 singles and three twos. Before the third ball of Gopal’s next over, Karnataka moved their short fine-leg to a deepish square-leg, their deepish square-leg to deep midwicket, and their deep midwicket to short fine-leg. All of this may have confused Sangram Atitkar, who promptly top-edged a slog-sweep, out of the rough, to the short fine-leg, who had been stationed for exactly that shot.Jadhav and new man Chirag Khurana continued taking the singles on offer. The first 50 runs of their partnership contained just two fours, but still only consumed 70 balls. When they brought up that landmark, Maharashtra were 14 runs ahead, with six wickets in hand. Two overs later, Jadhav went to 94 by cutting occasional legspinner Amit Verma to deep point for a single. He swept him fine for four when he got back on strike, and worked the next ball for two off his pads to bring up his century, off just 118 balls. The fifth-wicket partnership had moved to 88 when Khurana sliced a full-toss from Vinay Kumar straight to cover. This was Vinay’s 299th wicket. In his next over, he had his 300th. Once again, it was Robin Uthappa who took the catch at cover, after Jadhav spooned another full toss straight to him.Karnataka had started the fourth day with an overwhelming advantage, and their last three pairs had extended it by adding 41 runs in the morning. Through most of the third innings, they had let that advantage drift to an alarming degree. But with mere minutes to go for stumps, it had been almost entirely restored.

Johnson's intimidatory delight

Mitchell Johnson stopped short of invoking David Warner’s infamous “scared eyes” line about England at the Gabba, but he could not disguise a sense of delight at wreaking havoc in South Africa once more

#politeenquiries: ‘Australia are coming for your babies’

Mitchell Johnson stopped short of invoking David Warner’s infamous “scared eyes” line about England at the Gabba, but he could not disguise a sense of delight at wreaking havoc in South Africa once more, on a variable pitch he compared to that of Durban in 2009.That of course was the scene of Johnson’s most intimidatory spell previously in this country, but the impact of his first four overs at Centurion was every bit as sobering for South Africa, thrilling for Australia and exciting for any spectator who loves the sort of cricket that sets pulses racing. Behind the moustache, a mischievous, even childlike grin can pass across Johnson’s face, the sort reflected by the growing number of youngsters who will now want to emulate his speed.”I’m not trying to bowl 150km, but wickets like that and the ones we got in Australia, you’re trying to bang it through there and be intimidating at certain times,” Johnson said. “Hopefully youngsters coming through see it and want to do it as well … there are less out there now. I think it’s a great part of the game to have guys who can intimidate like that. Morne [Morkel] does it for them, I do it for Australia. You see the smiles on the kids’ faces when you walk up the stairs. They really love it and so do I.”This day Johnson loved nothing more than to add another episode of pain to his long-running battle with Graeme Smith. Where in 2009 Smith twice suffered a broken hand courtesy of Johnson’s speed, this time it was his ego that was fractured by a short ball he could neither play nor avoid, looping a catch to the slips. Not for the first time, Johnson suggested he had exhumed old doubts in Smith’s mind.”It’s nice when a plan like that comes off and like I said earlier when I got here [in South Africa] it definitely is in the back of his mind what’s happened previously,” Johnson said. “He’s done so well for his country and you just never know, but it was just one of those balls that took off. The wicket when I was batting felt like Morne was really getting the ball to go through, so it was just one of those good balls.”It is something I will keep trying to bowl, it was one of my plans to bowl that short ball and I didn’t really get a chance to swing the ball away from him. The first ball I bowled my plan was to go wide of the crease and get that angle, so we will have to see what happens in the second innings.”Mitchell Johnson: “Hopefully youngsters coming through see it [the intimidation tactics] and want to do it as well.•Getty Images

Another delivery that pleased Johnson was that to Faf du Plessis, arguably an even more fiendish ball than the one to account for Smith. Not as short in length, it leapt at du Plessis, who could offer only a bat raised in self-preservation and an edge to Michael Clarke. After another over Johnson was spelled, in keeping with the bowling coach Craig McDermott’s preference for shorter bursts.”It took off – it did surprise me as well,” Johnson said. “I just felt like there was something going on with that wicket. It was a little bit like Durban a few years ago where it was just really skipping off. It did fly to Michael Clarke in the slips and he took it really well. If I can keep producing balls like that I’ll be pretty happy.”I’m not unhappy that I didn’t bowl, he brought me back on pretty early afterward. Short spells have worked for me in the past, if you look back at the summer that’s what worked for me, I don’t think now I am going to bowl seven-over spells. Even if things are going well, we’ve still got to be smart about it and keep me fresh so I can keep bowling fast.”While the reactions of younger watchers stayed with Johnson, he was also regaled at times by familiar heckling from the boundary’s edge. He admitted to offering the occasional retort, all part of the intimidator’s role he has taken up with such relish in recent times, a considerable departure from the introspective and gentle soul he can be off the field.”I can’t really say what they were saying, nothing different to any other times I’ve been here,” he said. “I did give a little bit back, I did say to a few of the guys out in the pool maybe they should use the toilet, they’d been sitting in there for a while.”The role I’ve taken in this team is to be the aggressive bowler. That was my role in Australia and that’s my role here. I think I’ve enjoyed it definitely, and when the wicket suits just like that … I didn’t think it would swing that much so I bowled a few more shorter balls. So it’s just weighing up what the wicket’s doing and what the opposition’s doing as well.”

Zimbabwe players demand salary guarantee

The Zimbabwe Professional Cricketers Association has asked that the board set aside 25% of its revenue from participating in the World Twenty20 to guarantee the players’ salaries over the next 12 months

The Zimbabwe Professional Cricketers Association (ZPCA) has asked that the board set aside 25% of its revenue from participating in the World Twenty20 to guarantee the players’ salaries over the next 12 months. The players have also rejected Zimbabwe Cricket’s offer of arbitration on the issue. While the cricketers have not gone on strike again, they issued a demand that the problem of payments be resolved quickly and requested a discussion with ZC in Bulawayo on Monday. Both ZC and ZPCA agreed the money earned by board from the World T20 and will amount to US$8.9 million, of which the players demanded US$2.225 million for salaries over the next year. The ZPCA said it was “shocking and highly unacceptable that ZC has been failing to pay players and staff when they have been getting such huge amounts from ICC”.ZC’s offer was that each player participating in the World Twenty20 would receive US $11,500 and could earn bonuses of US $2700 per player if they won matches in the second round. The board made no mention of future payments but recommended a memorandum of understanding by end of May, when ZC would be negotiate with players for next season’s contracts. The players rejected the board’s offer of arbitration because they felt “ZC still has an obligation to convince us that they are still capable of being the custodians of the game of cricket in Zimbabwe and players salaries in particular”. ZC had offered three arbitrators, including former board president Alwyn Pichanick and former managing director Don Arnott, but the players said they “were not privy to how they chose these arbitrators and we questioned their impartiality”.They insisted on following internal procedures first and would only go to arbitration if a judicial commission appoints the arbitrators. The players made their statement only after ZC had issued one in which it said the ZPCA had reneged on a previous agreement to go to arbitration if meetings between the two bodies were deadlocked.”ZPCA is not engaged in any industrial action. Franchise games are underway country wide and the national team is in camp in preparation,” the ZPCA said in a statement. “ZPCA advised ZC that this matter must be attended to as early as possible and accorded the seriousness it deserves, otherwise we will not participate in any ZC organised event.”ZC said it may have a claim on the players should a boycott be reinstated. The board’s statement said: “Zimbabwe’s participation at the ICC WT20 tournament was in terms of the current contracts between the ZC and the players and, that with ZC having paid the players all that it owed them, if their action led to ZC breaching its obligation with the ICC to play in the tournament, the players would be liable for the breach and ZC would claim from them any damages occasioned by their conduct.”The situation is presently deadlocked because ZC wanted to hold Monday’s meeting in Harare, where they say all their documents are. The ZPCA wanted the discussions to take place in Bulawayo and asked ZC to courier their documents to the city.

CSA turns down Jennings application

Ray Jennings, the coach who took South Africa Under-19s to victory in the World Cup, will be out of a job from next week

Ray Jennings, the coach who took South Africa’s Under-19 squad to victory in the World Cup in the UAE last month, will be out of a job from next week. Jennings applied for a position within CSA’s development structures but was overlooked in favour of Lawrence Mahatlane, the former assistant coach of the Lions franchise. Shukri Conrad, who was in charge of both the Cobras and Lions, has been appointed national academy head coach.”I am bitterly disappointed,” Jennings told ESPNcricinfo. “But if the system doesn’t want you, then it doesn’t want you. It’s upsetting that it was left so late to let me know.” Interviews were conducted over the last three weeks but Jennings was only informed of the decision today. With just a week left until he will be out of contract Jennings admitted he is concerned about his future. “I’ll have to sit down and think properly about it,” he said while also mooting the possibility that he need to look beyond South Africa’s borders for employment. “But all these things take time.”Jennings had a hint that his services would no longer be required when he returned triuphant from the U-19 World Cup in March. Then, it was announced the role of U-19 coach would cease to exist its current form when Jennings’ contract expired at the end of April and would be split into two positions.CSA have since announced the position of U-19 head coach still exists, which was the job Jennings applied for. Mahatlane has been assigned to the role. Mahatlane obtained a Level Four coaching certificate in 2008 and was at the helm when the Gauteng Strikers, the provincial side who play at the tier below franchise level, won the three-day competition in the 2006-07 season and the one-day competition in 2007-08. He stopped coaching in 2011 but has worked as a cricket and rugby radio commentator for the public broadcaster, the SABC.The second post focuses on the national academy which will also involve running the academy from May to September standardising all the provincial academies. Conrad has been given this job. Conrad won the one-day competition with the Gauteng team in the 2003-04 season before the franchise system was introduced. He was then in charge of the Cobras for five years in which time he won the all three trophies on offer in separate seasons: the one-day cup (2006-07), the 20-over tournament (2008-09) and the first-class competition (2009-10). In 2011 he worked with the Ugandan national side and has since appeared on television commentary. The pair will look to fill the continuity gap left by Jennings, who has been in charge of South Africa’s U-19 side since 2006. Jennings has taken the side to five World Cups and he remembered that in that time, the various teams he has led have only lost four matches. He has also coached at provincial level, having been in charge of domestic teams Easterns and Gauteng and at international level with the South African A side and South Africa’s national side between 2004 and 2006.This is the second job Jennings has lost this year. In January, he was axed from the Royal Challengers Bangalore when they unveiled Daniel Vettori was their new head coach.
