India 'disappointed' not 'embarrassed' – Ashwin

R Ashwin has clarified that India are not embarrassed by their showing in Australia, rather they are disappointed

Sidharth Monga at the Adelaide Oval27-Jan-2012R Ashwin is on his first trip to Australia. He has not bowled extraordinarily well but he hasn’t disgraced himself either. Over a period of time he has looked the third-most comfortable India’s batsman in this series behind Virat Kohli and Sachin Tendulkar. He is also the most abused India player on message boards and below-the-line comments on internet articles. The simple reason is, Ashwin has been to more press conferences than any other India player through the series. Not counting the pre-series press conferences, in 12 days of Test cricket he has faced up to the media five times, only four fewer occasions than he has taken a wicket. This should not be mistaken as media’s self-importance. Throughout the series this space has reported players’ quotes as they are, without interpretations or embellishments. What the players say has been reported to the fans, and because Ashwin has been the most visible player on the platform, he has taken the most of the criticism from the fans. The seniors have mostly stayed away from any interaction. It hasn’t helped that a few of the other youngsters don’t speak English and the media manager sent by the BCCI doesn’t translate the Hindi quotes for the Australian press, which discourages the team from sending them out. Which has left us with Ashwin, who in his last press conference said that neither he nor any member of the side was embarrassed at the team’s performance.Today Ashwin sought to clarify what he said. “It would be nice if you could rephrase,” Ashwin said. “‘Embarrassed’ is not the right word. Nobody has done any one thing faulty. We have not fooled or cheated anyone. ‘We are extremely disappointed’ is probably the words I can use. It is a sport.”At the end of the day we have competed hard, it’s not that we have chucked it away. We’ve given it everything we had. Yes we came down short on occasions, there were moments we could have seized, and it would have looked different. We have not seized the initiative, and there hasn’t been enough in the bank to do it. Yes, we are extremely disappointed.”We always felt that we should give something back to the fans, but if you keep thinking something is going to be faulty back home, you can’t really do [the required] work here. It’s like we are on work, and we have to concentrate on it.”It doesn’t help either that Ashwin has been defensive in press conferences. Ask him why India go on the defensive as soon as they have been doing, and he questions your cricketing intelligence. Ask him about his inconsistent lines and lengths, and he says: “As a matter of fact, I bowled pretty well in Melbourne. There have been phases when I’ve bowled well. I wouldn’t say that I didn’t have much luck, but we always stumbled upon a roadblock where we get three wickets and don’t get the fourth quickly enough to attack as a whole, and have gone into a break and not seized the initiative. There have been situations when it’s happened like that.R Ashwin: “We have competed hard, it’s not that we have chucked it away.”•Getty Images

“With due credit, their players, a couple of them actually, have used their feet very well. I have tried to adjust to that. In Australian conditions, with the Kookaburra ball, even if you deceive them in the flight, they can go through with their shots. This is the learning I’ve taken from the series, stuff I would work on when the guys are stepping out to me. But to be honest, the ball has really come out of my hands well.”Ashwin was asked why it was always he who answered the media most of the time. Media interaction is not mandatory in bilateral series after all. “If that is what required of me,” Ashwin said, “if this is also a role I have to play as a cricketer, I definitely have to play it. If it is for the team, I am ready to take it [on].”Like others, Ashwin made it a point to talk about the playing surfaces. “There might be different scenarios and different conditions when teams travel to different places,” he said. “That’s what we have seen over the last one year. I think teams are getting increasingly stronger at home and they do realise that they need to give their bowlers enough in the wicket to get something out of it. Definitely under the sweltering heat and [when there is] lack of bounce, we might fancy ourselves. But a team that wants to count itself at the top of the world has to perform all over. So no excuses.”Ashwin said the fans could expect a better show in the limited-overs leg of the tour. “Everything is going to be fresh,” he said. “It is going to be a different ball game. The colour of the ball also changes. Hopefully we could change our luck as well.”In situations like these we need to forget what has happened and get on with it. Like I said, the ball is going to change, the squad is going to change, people coming in with fresh energy will help, so [we have to] just keep being positively. And we have played some good one-day cricket, even though we lost in England. I think there are people that appreciate that once again things – dew, rain, everything – didn’t go our way. I hope that doesn’t happen here. I am sure it will not happen over a period of one month. Looking forward to playing good one-day cricket, and if we get on top we shouldn’t let them [the opposition] back again.”

Hosts brace for final Sri Lankan surge

Australia are a match away from sealing a dramatic and entertaining triangular series, but it is all too apparent that Michael Clarke’s team is staggering towards the finish line

Big PictureAustralia are a match away from sealing a dramatic and entertaining triangular series, but it is all too apparent that Michael Clarke’s team is staggering towards the finish line. To wrap up the finals 2-0 the hosts will have to win two in a row for the first time since games one and two of the series, and do so on an Adelaide surface far more amenable to Sri Lanka than Brisbane’s was supposed to have been. Mahela Jayawardene’s Sri Lankan team, meanwhile, carries plenty of momentum from the Gabba, not least in terms of the fight shown by a lower order that was about as inclined to quit as the American revolutionaries at the battle of Bunker Hill in 1775.Clarke’s concerns entering the second final revolve principally around his bowling, which lurched into indiscipline as Nuwan Kulasekara and others provided an unexpected fright. It was not the first time the home attack had been exploited in the later overs this series, something Clarke was at pains to address in the aftermath of the match, when he spoke less as a victor than as a leader wary of how his men are flagging. Ben Hilfenhaus and James Pattinson were particularly loose, and only Shane Watson looked entirely in command of his length and direction. David Warner’s fitness is also a problem following his match-shaping 163, and will likely force a change in the batting order. While Sri Lanka’s attack looked powerless at times on a flat surface in Brisbane, they can expect a little more help in Adelaide, on a pitch that may slow up and turn in the evening. Most pressing among Jayawardene’s requirements will be that one or more of his team’s vaunted top order provides a more worthy contribution than they managed at the Gabba, where the late fightback masked the earlier inattention that made such a stirring rearguard necessary.Form guideAustralia WLWLW (Most recent first)
Sri Lanka LWLWWIn the spotlightXavier Doherty bowled tidily at the Gabba, maintaining his knack for the useful. However in Adelaide he will expect to play a more central role, taking wickets as well as keeping the runs down. David Hussey managed to burgle four wickets in Brisbane, and Doherty’s lack of a major haul across his matches in this series will be the one thing nagging away at him. These finals are the last ones he will play as the undisputed No. 1 ODI spinner, as Nathan Lyon will vie for a place against Doherty in the Caribbean.Nuwan Kulasekara is nobody’s idea of a conspicuous cricketer, his steady right-arm medium fast bowling the sort of handy skill that can make an ODI career of substance rather than fanfare. However the way he crashed into Australia’s bowlers with the bat at the Gabba suggested greater depths of flair lurk beneath, and must have caused more than a few to ask “who was that masked man?” as he left the scene with 73 to his name. His challenge in Adelaide will be to replicate that impact, with ball or bat. Another star-turn would help keep the series alive.Team newsDavid Warner is in extreme doubt due to a groin injury picked up during his Gabba innings, leaving Peter Forrest the most likely reinforcement while Shane Watson returns to the top of the order. One of Pattinson or Hilfenhaus should make way for Clint McKay.Australia (possible) 1 Shane Watson, 2 Matthew Wade (wk), 3 Peter Forrest, 4 Michael Clarke (capt), 5 Michael Hussey, 6 David Hussey, 7 Daniel Christian, 8 Brett Lee, 9 James Pattinson, 10 Clint McKay, 11 Xavier Doherty. An extra spinner is a likely gambit by the visitors, while they are also waiting on the fitness of Angelo Mathews.Sri Lanka (possible) 1 Mahela Jayawardene (capt), 2 Tillakaratne Dilshan, 3 Kumar Sangakkara (wk), 4 Dinesh Chandimal, 5 Lahiru Thirimanne, 6 Upul Tharanga, 7 Farveez Maharoof, 8 Sachithra Senanayake, 9 Nuwan Kulasekara, 10 Lasith Malinga, 11 Rangana Herath.Pitch and conditionsAdelaide’s surface can be expected to be of similar character to that which hosted the domestic limited-overs final. The match was a dramatic tie that ended with South Australia and Tasmania locked on 285 runs apiece, a comfortable batting surface offering some turn in the evening. The weather forecast is fine and temperate.Stats and trivia Sri Lanka were victorious the last time they met Australia in a final at Adelaide Oval, in 2006. That night Tillakaratne Dilshan had a hand in no fewer than four run-outs This will be the last international match (or matches) hosted by Adelaide Oval before the start of redevelopment work that will dramatically reconfigure the ground.Quotes”A win is a win. But we have a lot of work to do with our Powerplay and death bowling. It hasn’t been good enough all series. It continues to let us down. We are the No.1 one-day team and we have to be better than that. Hopefully that [scare] allows us to understand that we have to be better than that.”
“The boys, at the end, showed some real character and kept fighting which is something you want to cultivate in a team.”

A ação estava caminhando.

Sammy's glimpse of paradise

Darren Sammy said the sight of Australia rejoicing would stay with him, until he has the chance to do it himself

Daniel Brettig at Kensington Oval12-Apr-2012

Darren Sammy: “The way I heard them celebrating … means a lot to me. We’ll take that to heart.”•AFP

Kensington Oval’s dressing rooms are close together, only a clear glass partition separating the viewing areas of the two competing teams. Upon leaving the field in the aftermath of a three-wicket defeat, West Indies captain Darren Sammy had an eyeful of what it means to win a great Test match. On the other side of the glass Australia’s players had dissolved into a huddle of embraces, whoops and back-slaps, while the disconsolate hosts looked on.Sammy’s team is developing slowly, but must learn the hard lessons of how to keep fighting over five days of a Test. And how to resort to more than cynical delaying tactics when the result of a match is in dispute. But Sammy said the sight of Australia rejoicing would stay with him, until he has the chance to do it himself.”We dominated a top side with some good players and the way I heard them celebrating on the balcony means a lot to me,” Sammy said. “We’ll take that to heart and look to come back strong in Trinidad. I told the guys at the end of the Test match to keep their heads up. We did a lot of good things. I can remember in the pre-match interview both captains said one bad hour could turn the game around and that’s exactly what happened in this Test match. We dominated Australia for three and a half days and even today when we bowled, we made them fight for that 190.”Since becoming captain and forming his alliance with the coach Ottis Gibson, Sammy has taken West Indies closer to earning respect as a battling, striving team. However the lessons of past matches, including two keenly fought series against India at home and away in 2011, are as yet not fully learned. However Sammy also pointed to the gains of the first innings, in which Kraigg Brathwaite and Kirk Edwards showed the way before Shivnarine Chanderpaul maintained his command of Caribbean batting. West Indies’ bowling was steadfast, augmented usefully in the second innings by Narsingh Deonarine’s off breaks – though the more mysterious finger spin of Sunil Narine was missed.”We’ve learned a lot of lessons. Remember Mumbai, Kolkata, Delhi [where West Indies played last November]. Basically similar things keep happening,” Sammy said. “We keep getting close but we just need to find a way to get over that hurdle. That last hurdle. We’ve just got to come back strong. I think the bowlers stuck to the plan most of the time. The way the batters batted in the first innings, leaving alone a lot of balls and stuff like that and Shiv again, showing his experience, the two young openers – Kraigg and Barath – at the top. We did some good stuff, we just lost it in the second innings there. If Sammy’s tactics lurched towards the defensive for too much of Australia’s chase, he said he had been trying to keep a balance between searching for wickets and trying to tease the visitors out by withholding runs. Australia’s captain Michael Clarke refused to criticise his opposite number for tactics that the tourists would have been unlikely to employ, and offered supportive words for the vanquished.”I think they’re probably in a tough position because they haven’t got a full-strength team, do they? That must be hard for them,” Clarke said. “I want to give West Indies a lot of credit. I thought the way they batted in their first innings was outstanding. I think their bowlers knew the conditions well and they bowled pretty well.”I want to take nothing away from the guys in our change room. I thought a lot of credit needs to go to them to be able to get a win out of 450 [by the opposition] on the board on the first two days and our backs against the wall, but I’ll take nothing away from West Indies. I thought they fought really hard, I think it was a fantastic Test match.”I know everybody at the ground enjoyed it, and hopefully the people back home and all around the world that watch continue to enjoy Test cricket. For me as captain, it’s very important we continue to make this great game very enjoyable and we want people to come out and support us and watch, and hopefully we get a great crowd in Trinidad as well.”A memorable match will live long in Clarke’s memory. As for Sammy, it will burn deeply into his.

Bangladesh pleased with coach hunt

Bangladesh’s hunt for a head coach may prove easier this time, with one candidate throwing his hat in the ring and another acknowledging he was considering an offer

Bangladesh’s hunt for a head coach may prove easier this time, with one candidate throwing his hat in the ring and another acknowledging he was considering an offer. This, even before the board has formally advertised the vacancy left by Stuart Law – a sea change from the past, and credited to Bangladesh’s recent successes on the field and off it.Days after Dean Jones, the former Australia batsman tweeted that he’d been contacted by the board and was considering the offer, Dermot Reeve, the former England allrounder, said he was keen to succeed Law when he steps down at the end of June. It is also understood that some of Law’s current colleagues on the coaching staff are interested in replacing him.Reeve, 49, has coached Somerset and Central Districts in New Zealand and has also been bowling coach of the New Zealand Twenty20 side and of Pune Warriors in the IPL. He is currently working as a television commentator and says there hasn’t been an offer laid on the table.”Yes, I would be very interested in the job,” Reeve told ESPNcricinfo, “but there have been no offers or formal talks or anything like that. Coaching Bangladesh would be a wonderful opportunity. I honestly believe they will win world cups one day and there is no reason it shouldn’t start with the World T20 in Sri Lanka in September.”There is a huge amount of talent within the Bangladesh set-up. Shakib Al Hasan is ranked the No. 1 allrounder in the world in Tests and ODIs; others can do that if they follow his commitment and acquire his mental toughness. They just need absolute, total belief and some fine tuning to turn them into one of the world’s leading sides.”According to the BCB, the candidates will be asked to send in their applications with a forwarding letter to the acting CEO, Nizamuddin Chowdhury, by May 15.The board’s cricket operations committee chairman Enayet Hossain Siraj said that they have only just begun the process so there’s no question of a favourite, but he was happy to learn that coaches are interested in the job.”This is a positive [development] and think it has come about, firstly, through the BPL, where the foreign coaches understood that the working environment in Bangladesh is favourable,” Siraj said. “Second, of course, is the Asia Cup performance of the team where the world has learned that success is possible for Bangladesh.”We have only just started to look for a coach so by the deadline we have provided, we will draw up a shortlist and then process our requirements.”It’s a far cry from the BCB’s past struggles to find a coach. After Dav Whatmore left the job in 2007, the BCB made Shaun Williams the interim coach and only after Gazi Ashraf Hossain, the former national captain, intervened and traced Jamie Siddons did he take the job. The appointment of Law, too, had its problems as he was keen on having roles in the Twenty20 tournaments apart from holding the Bangladesh job. Other candidates sounded out at the time wanted the option of being able to have a freelance role during the off season.
