Everton: Lampard must axe Andre Gomes

Everton put on an impressive performance against Leeds United to secure their first Premier League win in seven games on Saturday afternoon in front of the home fans at Goodison Park.

Michael Keane, Seamus Coleman and Anthony Gordon all found the back of the net as the Toffees put on an offensive and defensive masterclass against their opponents, keeping their fourth top-flight clean sheet of the season.

The new Everton boss made a few changes to his side, replacing an injured Demarai Gray with Alex Iwobi and Donny Van de Beek starting instead of Andre Gomes alongside Allan in midfield, and it paid off.

One player who made an accomplished appearance for Everton on Saturday was Van de Beek, creating a goalscoring opportunity against Bielsa’s team with a key pass and winning three aerial duels (the most on either side). He also recorded the most tackles against Leeds (four) and recovered the ball 10 times to keep Everton ticking over during the course of the game.

With that being said, it is no coincidence that the 24-year-old’s performance came as Everton comfortably beat their opponents, so it may be the perfect opportunity for Lampard to now ruthlessly axe Andre Gomes from the side.

The £120k-p/w Portuguese midfielder, who was described as “reckless” by Everton journalist David Prentice, has had ample opportunities in the starting XI throughout the season to make an impact, with 10 Premier League appearances so far. His inclusion in the team had clearly fallen flat, as he has started in the last six games that the Toffees have lost.

With Van de Beek’s introduction to the team having such a huge impact on Everton’s performance compared to the display at St James’ Park in their previous game, Lampard will be likely to persist with the Manchester United loanee, pushing Gomes to the bench. It would seem that the latter just isn’t of the standard that the Toffees need any more.

'ODI cricket will grow stronger' – Lorgat

Haroon Lorgat, the chief executive of the ICC, has reaffirmed his faith in the ODI format, expressing optimism over its future given its ability to draw big crowds and generate sizeable viewership. Lorgat said the ICC, together with member boards, would continue to experiment with changes to the format that would make it more appealing. He was speaking on the eve of the 3000th ODI, to be played in Southampton, incidentally, by the same two teams that inaugurated the format in 1971 – England and Australia.”That game at the Melbourne Cricket Ground was arranged on very short notice after a Test match had been washed out and nobody was really sure what would happen,” Lorgat said. “When around 46,000 people showed up to watch I think the organisers realised they were on to something big. Since that day it has been hugely successful and we have been treated to some of the great moments of cricket through ODIs.”The first three World Cups, beginning with 1975, were 60-overs-a-side tournaments while the ones that followed were all 50 overs. The game, over the years, has undergone significant changes but without altering the basics of cricket, Lorgat said. “That first ODI nearly 40 years ago involved the bowling of 40 eight-ball overs per innings and the structure of the game has been constantly evolving ever since. Over the years various initiatives have been trialled and refined and we now have quite a different spectacle to the one that was first on show.”Coloured clothing, white balls, fielding restrictions, bowling limitations, Powerplays, free-hits and many other aspects of the game have all been introduced but the unmistakable and unshakable core skills required by batsmen, bowlers and fielders are still intact.”And the broad appeal remains strong. ODIs still attract big crowds and enormous television viewing figures. The ODI series between England and Australia that gets underway tomorrow will be hugely well-attended and the recent ODIs in Ireland and Scotland were also sell-outs.”Cricket Australia recently announced it would experiment with a split-innings one-day format in the country’s next domestic season. Lorgat said the “evolution” of one-day cricket would continue to make it relevant to changing times. “As we prepare for the 10th staging of the ICC Cricket World Cup in Bangladesh, India and Sri Lanka next year, the importance of this format to the game remains very high,” he said. “I have no doubt the ODI will continue to adapt and evolve – in fact we always encourage our Members to trial new initiatives at domestic level to see if they work – and above all, I have no doubt the ODI will continue to strengthen long into the future.”

'System not producing enough black cricketers' – Ntini

Makhaya Ntini, the South Africa fast bowler, believes the existing structure to identify black cricketers in the country’s rural areas is not yielding the desired results. Ntini, among his country’s most renowned sporting personalities and himself a product of that structure, is raising funds to build an academy in the Eastern Cape and hopes it will help in the development of more black cricketers.”We do have a structure in South Africa where they are looking for black cricketers outside the usual areas, the cities. They go to the rural areas to try and find promising youngsters,” Ntini told . “But when you are talking about whether it’s developing, or it’s still going down a bit, it’s a very rare person who will answer in the first way. I would say cricket from the point of view of the black community is not the same as when Khaya Majola or Dr Ali Bacher were around, when it was booming, we had all the schools getting together to play some games.”Then it was easier to see who was a very good cricketer, who could go to the high schools and develop their cricket. Now it’s not so easy. I would like that to change.”Ntini is South Africa’s ambassador for the FIFA World Cup which begins in the country in less than a week. For a cricketer to represent his country in that capacity at a global event, Ntini said, was very special. “As a cricketer for me to be there, and part and parcel of what’s going on in our country, it’s a huge thing, something I’m proud of as a country, as a person and as an individual.”Ntini acknowledged cricket in South Africa was still a sport dominated by whites, and for black cricketers to compete and succeed, they had to work that much harder. “Cricket in South Africa is not exclusively white, but it is more white-dominant. The football is more black-dominant, so they are two different ball games in every respect,” Ntini said. “For those of us who don’t play football, we have to make sure we are 10% ahead of anything else, regarding fitness, regarding preparation, everything, for us to compete with the other players. In a white-dominant sport, to stay there for longer, those kind of things we have to go through.”Earlier in the year, in the Test series against England, Ntini became the fifth South African cricketer to play 100 Tests. His performance, however, had been on a decline and he was dropped after his 101st. He is currently representing Kent in the English domestic season but remains hopeful of a return to international cricket. “I have enjoyed my time [with Kent] and I would definitely love to come back, but first I must sort out my cricket life back home and see if I am still involved with the national team. If not, playing county cricket will be my second option,” he said.”I only need 10 [Test] wickets to get to 400, and I am crossing my fingers I will be given that opportunity. If it was not me, if it was anyone else, only 32 and still needing 10 wickets for 400, he would definitely [get the chance]. You know, ‘We’ll try and get him those wickets’.” Ntini had expressed his disappointment at not having heard from the selectors since being dropped. Andrew Hudson, Cricket South Africa’s chief selector, responded saying Ntini will be considered for selection for the national side’s upcoming series, following his encouraging stint with Kent.

Predicted Tottenham line-up vs Wolves

Tottenham return to Premier League action today as they look to bounce back from their 3-2 defeat to Southampton in midweek.

Antonio Conte’s side were stunned by a quickfire double from the Saints as they gave up a 2-1 lead to end up losing the match, with Che Adams heading in the winning goal.

They now come up against a Wolves team who are two points and one place behind them in the Premier League table. Bruno Lage’s men have won five of their last eight games in all competitions but did lose 1-0 to Arsenal last time out.

How many changes will Conte make to the team? Here is our predicted XI…

We are predicting that he will make three alterations to the side, with Rodrigo Bentancur, Dejan Kulusevski and Matt Doherty coming in.

Conte has confirmed that Eric Dier will not be fit enough to make his return from injury. This means that he will not be available for selection and, therefore, the back three may remain the same from the defeat to the Saints, with Christian Romero, Davinson Sanchez and Ben Davies lining up in defence.

At wing-back, Doherty could replace Emerson Royal after the Brazilian’s disappointing showing earlier this week. He only completed 73% of his passes and made one error leading to a show, registering a SofaScore rating of 6.4. This could lead to the Irishman being handed an opportunity to play against his former side.

In midfield, Bentancur could come in for Harry Winks. The £91k-per-week Englishman was dreadful against Southampton and deserves to lose his place for this match. As per SofaScore, he was dribbled past three times, made one error leading to a shot and made one tackle, whilst failing to make an interception or block.

This could open up the door for the January signing to make his first Premier League start for Spurs. In 30 minutes off the bench in midweek, he made one tackle and one interception whilst also winning two of his three duels and completing 100% of his attempted dribbles – as per SofaScore. This suggests that he could impress if given the chance to play a full match as he was able to make a solid contribution off the bench.

Finally, we are predicting that Kulusevski will start on the right of the front three. With games coming thick and fast, Conte may look to rotate his attack in order to avoid burnout and potential injuries, which could see the Sweden international make his full league debut for Spurs.

Player retention crucial for fan loyalty – Harbhajan

India offspinner Harbhajan Singh feels players should have a say in which team they would like to represent going into the fourth season of the IPL

Harbhajan Singh: “If all players are going to be auctioned again, there won’t be any team loyalty”•Indian Premier League

India offspinner Harbhajan Singh feels players should have a say in which team they would like to represent going into the fourth season of the IPL. The player contracts signed so far were valid only for the first three years and there is speculation over whether teams will be allowed to retain players ahead of the upcoming season, which will also feature two new teams.”I believe in the Premier League, players have a choice to pick or reject offers to play for a certain team,” Harbhajan said. “If no player is allowed to continue with his team, (the whole team will break).”Harbhajan was concerned team loyalty and fan following would suffer if star players migrated from their current teams. “People associate me with Mumbai Indians. And I have some fan following being a Mumbai Indians player. If all players are going to be auctioned again, there won’t be any team loyalty. But then, big guys are going to set the rules of the new process.”The Pune coach Geoff Marsh is against player retention since it would represent a significant disadvantage to the new franchises. While Harbhajan’s loyalties lie firmly with Mumbai, he does not think playing for Pune would be very different. “I play for the Mumbai Indians. Like Pune, even Mumbai is in Maharashtra. So there is not much difference,” he said.Harbhajan paid tribute to retiring Sri Lankan offspinner Muttiah Muralitharan, who tipped Harbhajan as the only bowler likely to challenge his Test wicket tally. “No one can touch Muralitharan’s record in Tests. It’s sweet of him to say that. But realistically, I’m nowhere near that. I have learnt so many things from him. We will surely miss him.”

Journalist urges Spurs to sign Raphinha

Tottenham should sign Leeds United star Raphinha after missing out on winger Luis Diaz in January, according to journalist Pete O’Rourke.

The Lowdown: Raphinha’s future at Leeds unclear

The Brazilian has arguably been the Whites’ best player this season, leading their Premier League scoring charts with nine goals, including one in Sunday’s 4-2 defeat at home to Manchester United.

However, constant speculation surrounds the winger’s future at Elland Road, with a host of elite clubs linked with a move for him at the end of the season. At least the 25-year-old’s current deal does not expire until the summer of 2024, so only a huge bid could prompt Leeds to sell, in all probability.

The Latest: Journalist backs Spurs move for Raphinha

Speaking to GiveMeSport, O’Rourke claimed that Raphinha could be an ideal alternative to Diaz for Spurs after the Colombian joined Liverpool last month instead.

The journalist said: “Raphinha is similar to Diaz. He’s a match-winner who can create goals and score goals as well.

“I think if Leeds are unable to tie him down to a new contract or forced to sell him, Spurs should be right in there along with all those other top clubs.”

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/latest-leeds-united-news-34/” title=”Latest Leeds United news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The Verdict: Final few months at Elland Road?

Raphinha’s body language hasn’t always been great in recent weeks, which has only heightened the speculation surrounding a potential summer exit.

It is easy to see him moving on, with a Champions League club likely to come in for him amid Leeds languishing towards the bottom of the Premier League.

Ideally, Raphinha will sign a new deal at Elland Road – and it may still happen – but the Whites must realistically prepare for him seeking a new challenge in the summer.
