UP march into quarters

A round-up of the third day’s action from the sixth round of the Ranji Trophy Super League

Scorecard
Uttar Pradesh resumed the third day needing 183 to get with eight wickets in hand and lost five of them en route to a win that took them to the quarter-finals of the Ranji Trophy’s Super League. Mohammad Kaif, batting at No. 3, added 40 runs to his overnight score even as Shivakant Shukla added just one to his, dismissed in the first over of the day, but really aiding UP’s charge to victory was Parvinder Singh. Parvinder atoned for a first-innings duck with 62 from 95 balls, studded with ten boundaries, and added 93 with Kaif. The pair was dismissed in relative succession – within five overs and ten runs of each other – but handy cameos from Bhuvneshwar Kumar (29) and Piyush Chawla (21) helped UP chase their target of 236 with three wickets remaining. UP are now second in their group’s points table with 18, second to Karnataka’s 23. Bengal, after this defeat, sit at fifth place with eight points.
Scorecard
Five wickets from Pradeep Sangwan trumped a century from Ankit Bawne and ensured Delhi stayed on course for a crucial win – their second on the trot – at the Roshanara. Following in, Maharashtra resumed the third day on 32 for 1 and were 334 for 9 at stumps. It was an improved showing from the visitors, who were bowled out 163 in their first innings, but a 78-run lead at the close should not worry Delhi much. Leading the way was Bawne, with 118, and Rohit Motwani with a gritty 61. Sangwan was the hero with the ball, cutting through the top and middle order before Bawne and Motwani put on 107 for the fifth wicket. Once Motwani was removed by Parwinder Awana, Banwe added 105 with Digambar Waghmare (46) to take Maharashtra past 300. In successive deliveries, Sangwan dismissed Bawne and Jitendra Patil to give Delhi a final lift before the day ended.Group A
Scorecard
A stunning collapse by Gujarat, at the hands of left-arm seamer Mohinder Sharma, set Himachal Pradesh up for a six-wicket win on day three in Surat. Gujarat held the edge coming in to the day, needing just to wickets to take a first-innings lead, and that they achieved with Siddharth Trivedi taking them to finish with a career-best 6 for 32. HP only added eight runs to their total, but what followed was stunning. Mohinder Sharma, sharing the new ball, dismissed the Gujarat openers inside four overs and, after Ashok Thakur nabbed No’s 3 and 4, proceeded to take a career-best haul. Gujarat were never allowed to gain momentum and folded for a paltry 87 in 42.4 overs, leaving HP to chase 140. That attempt began poorly as the debutant Tatsat Brahmbhatt took three wickets in his first three overs, but a 68-run stand between Hemant Dogra (42) and Mukesh Sharma (52*) resurrected the innings. It was HP’s first win of the tournament and put them at sixth on their pool’s points table.
Scorecard
Sanjay Bangar’s quick strikes on the third morning at the Uppal Stadium dented Hyderabad and gave Railways crucial first-innings points. Ambati Rayudu and the tail breathed life back into the innings and at the end of the day the likely result was a draw. From 99 for 2 overnight, Hyderabad slipped to 119 for 5, losing Anirudh Singh for 42, but Rayudu’s patient 73 led a fightback. Krishnakant Upadhyay, with four wickets, including that of VVS Laxman for 9, kept the pressure up but Hyderadad’s lower order rallied to get the score past the 300-run mark. Munagala Praneet Arjun (22), Alfred Absolem (29) and Mohammed Khader (34) each got stuck in to frustrate Railways. At stumps, Railways led by 20 with their openers together after nine overs at the crease.
Scorecard
An exciting day’s play in Chandigarh saw Orissa take the first-innings lead and add to that significantly against hosts Punjab. Basanth Mohanty added a couple more wickets go finish with 6 for 65 as Punjab managed to add 33 to their total, with Mayank Sidhana hitting his maiden half-century. Love Ablish tried hard to wrest back some momentum for Punjab, taking five wickets, but the opener Subhrajit Sahoo’s 62 proved crucial. Halhadar Das, the wicketkeeper, was unbeaten on 39 at stumps with Orissa leading by 302.Click here to read Nagraj Gollapudi’s bulletin of the third day’s play between Mumbai and Tamil Nadu.

Newcastle eye Man Utd’s Jesse Lingard

Fabrizio Romano has revealed that Newcastle United have now ‘started’ contacts over a potential move for Jesse Lingard in the January transfer window.

The Lowdown: Developing story…

The Times claimed last week that the St James’ Park club have offered a record deal to the 28-year-old would make him the highest earner in their history and have duly made the Manchester United midfielder their priority signing next month.

His current contract at Old Trafford is set to expire in the summer, meaning that he can leave as a free agent in just a few months’ time.

As such, January may present the perfect opportunity for the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) consortium to pounce, as the Red Devils will surely want to cash in at the risk of losing him for nothing.

The Latest: Contacts have ‘started’

As per Italian football journalist and transfer expert Romano, contacts have now ‘started’ with Newcastle over a potential move for Lingard, although ‘nothing’ has been agreed as of yet.

They are ‘seriously interested’ in bringing him to Tyneside, although it is an ‘open race’ for his signature.

The Verdict: Get it done

The fact that Lingard can leave for free in the summer means that the Magpies could get him on the cheap in the winter window, and he could seriously help in their push to avoid relegation from the Premier League.

Described in complimentary fashion as a ‘joke’ and a player who ‘has four lungs’ by former United youngster Angel Gomes recently, his energy and work rate would be much appreciated among the Toon Army as they bid to avoid the drop. The 28-year-old has also shown his quality on the ball, with nine goals and a further five assists during a very successful loan spell at West Ham United last season (Transfermarkt).

With Newcastle needing to get out of trouble and Lingard not getting much of a look-in at Old Trafford, failing to start a Premier League game this season, it seems like a move which would suit all parties involved.

Desnorteado, o time de Levir Culpi parecia entregue.

Elementar.

Asif and Kaneria help level series

The very shape and variety of this attack, the threat of wickets alive in each of them, did for New Zealand at the Basin Reserve

The Bulletin by Osman Samiuddin06-Dec-2009
Scorecard and ball-by-ball details
How they were outMohammad Asif’s nine wickets took his series tally to 17•Getty Images

If Pakistan are not to go another three years and 12 Tests without a win, much will rest, as it has always, on their bowling. The very shape and variety of this attack, the threat of wickets alive in each of them, did for New Zealand at the Basin Reserve in Wellington, taking Pakistan to an ultimately comfortable 141-run win to level the series, going into Napier. Mohammad Asif and Danish Kaneria were the heavies this innings, but at all times Mohammad Aamer and a luckless Umar Gul were chomping at the bit behind them.Typically, the route to victory was a convoluted one, for dismissing 16 batsmen – they dropped six catches blind penguins wouldn’t have let go in the second innings – is clearly more fun than just ten. Little, however, could be done about a breathtaking counter from Ross Taylor, who left Pakistan dazed and confused and briefly raised hopes of an audacious steal; only after he fell half an hour before lunch, in the nineties for the second Test running, could Pakistan afford to hang a little looser.A dull morning had promised much for them, as Aamer and Kaneria struck early, reward for the batsmen’s own sins more than anything. If only New Zealand had a few more Taylors they would have walked this one. He was the only man standing, cigar in mouth, chest and guns out and willing to chest-bump Pakistan around, as he has through the series. The gulf between him and some of New Zealand’s batsmen is as wide as that of Mexico. He had started a dull morning like a man on speed. Quick hands and feet helped him drive easily through covers but an ugly slog across the line for six off Asif unleashed something even more in him. Adrenaline and heart, rather than just head, carried him through an exhilarating high-risk, high-octane bouncer battle with Gul where words were exchanged as freely as were blows and boundaries. The hooks weren’t always textbooks though when were textbooks last any good? Eyes came off the ball regularly, but intent takes a batsman a long way these days. He took care to mix in some more dapper strokeplay as well, a whippy cut through point and a couple of fine sweeps off Kaneria that easily carried for six. Before you knew it, he had put on fifty with Brendon McCullum, though it was more monopoly than collusion really. Some control came back Pakistan’s way with the return of Aamer and the nearing of Taylor’s hundred, a spell before lunch where run-scoring calmed down a little. Pakistan lost what little they had gained as Gul dropped a sitter at point from McCullum: what he was doing at a position made famous by men such as Jonty Rhodes will take some answering. Yesterday’s drops, dollies each one of them, were suddenly looking a little less funny. And when McCullum was rightly reprieved two overs later by the review system – hitting the ball rarely makes a good case for leg-before – things seemed to be not going as much Pakistan’s way as they would have liked. But the impressive Aamer persisted from round the stumps, no doubt furthering comparisons with you-know-who. Taylor’s nerves – hidden so well for so long – reappeared as he chased one and finally, as hell froze over, a Pakistani slip catch was held onto. Straight after lunch, Kaneria shut the door temporarily on the spin debate in Pakistan, reminding all of the innate beauty of his art. McCullum was done in by a delicious legbreak, and the googly that got Daryl Tuffey would have – and has – gotten rid of better men.Iain O’Brien, in his last home Test, smiled and slogged his way to a highest Test score but that was pretty much that, time left only for a couple of confirmations. One, that Daniel Vettori is not only the most dependable batsmen in his side, he is among the most irritating to bowl to the world over. And two, that even if this bowling attack remains intact for Pakistan, they might need to shoot a few of their fielders if they are to continue winning.

Leeds United must sign Blackburn’s Ben Brereton

Leeds United have been handed a boost in their chase for Blackburn Rovers forward Ben Brereton Diaz.

What’s the story?

According to Chilean publication, Red Gol, Marcelo Bielsa was interested in signing Brereton this summer, and reports in recent days and weeks have suggested that is still the case now ahead of the January transfer window.

Now, Rovers manager Tony Mowbray has delivered an update on the situation and admitted that Brereton could leave the club in the near future.

He said: “The club will decide. The owners will decide what they want to do, their business in India has suffered a little bit.

“If he can get a top, top move, earn the money and be a Premier League striker I’d never stop him doing that but I would hope he stays with us and sees the season out at the very least and keep the goals coming of course.”

Imagine him and Raphinha

Able to play as a number nine, but also out wide on both flanks, Brereton enjoyed his most prolific campaign to date in the Championship with Blackburn last season, bagging seven goals and providing five assists in 40 league games.

Those are the sort of numbers that would be richly welcomed at Leeds and given the exciting nature of Raphinha, they could stir up quite the combination in offensive areas at Elland Road.

Dubbed a “wonderful talent”, Rovers boss Mowbray, said: “Brereton’s like a beast now, and he can score goals. I see it every day in training. He’s a brilliant lad and all our lads absolutely love him. He’s filled out now and he will work so hard for this team. He’s very gifted and can score goals.”

Meanwhile, Brereton’s Chilean compatriot, Carlos Villanueva, said: “He’s going to make a good contribution to the national team, especially in a position where we had been looking for variants years ago.

“There has always been talk of that spare 9 and he gives you different characteristics… He comes from a football much more physical than the South American. He also has Chilean and South American blood, which puts in and fights.”

The £9m-rated attacker sounds exactly like the industrious player that Bielsa wants in his squad at Elland Road, and at just 22, is still nowhere near the prime years of his career.

Given the kind of struggles Leeds have endured this season in the Premier League, a move for Brereton might be the kind of momentum-starting signing that can fire the Yorkshire club up the table.

After all, Patrick Bamford’s absence is a continuous stumbling block with the England international missing a large portion of the campaign through injury. Brereton could help fix that issue, however, and armed with Raphinha at this side, a devastating duo would be formed to surely fire them to safety.

Meanwhile, Phil Hay has dropped a Leeds United transfer update…

Broom heroics in vain in massive chase of 411

Batting went into fifth gear at the Aorangi Oval in Timaru as Canterbury set a New Zealand domestic record by piling on 410 for 5, boosted by Rob Nicol’s century

Batting went into fifth gear at the Aorangi Oval in Timaru as Canterbury, boosted by Rob Nicol’s century, hit 410 for 5 – a record total in New Zealand domestic cricket. Otago took up the challenge in their chase and Neil Broom, who helped himself to a big hundred, made Canterbury sweat but they ultimately won by 39 runs.Nicol and Michael Papps got Canterbury going with an opening stand of 160 in 25 overs. Papps made a quick 78 off 79 balls before he was bowled by Broom. Canterbury more tham doubled their score during the second half of the innings, propelled by another century stand. Nicol and Peter Fulton added 127 for the second wicket before Nicol departed for 132. Fulton fell 12 short of his century but there was more misery in store for the Otago bowlers as Shannan Stewart led a late assault, smashing 55 off 21 balls – with four fours and five sixes – to take Canterbury past 400.That surpassed the 376 for 3 by Central Districts against Otago at Pukekura Park, New Plymouth, in 1996-97. The only Otago bowler to concede less than six an over was Nathan McCullum, who took 1 for 56 off his ten overs.Otago lost Leighton Morgan for 4 in the second over but the joy was shortlived for Canterbury as Broom cut loose, as did Shaun Haig who made 46. Three consecutive half-century stands (including two 90-plus stands) made things interesting. When McCullum fell in the 41st over, Otago had lost half their side with another 131 needed. Their best hope was for Broom to stick around till the very end but he fell in the 43rd over for a career-best 164, coming off 130 balls with 12 fours and seven sixes. Ian Butler’s frenetic unbeaten 53 off 26 balls gave Otago hope but in the end, their brave efforts ended at 371. A total of 781 runs were scored, making it the overall fourth highest match aggregate in limited-overs.The win puts Canterbury in second place in the points table after five rounds, but Otago are at the bottom.

NUFC: Howe must unleash Stephenson

The January transfer window is just around the corner and Newcastle United have been tipped to be busy throughout the month in terms of making signings.

Eddie Howe looks set to strengthen his Magpies squad, with Ousmane Dembele, Joe Rodon, Lucas Paqueta and Dusan Vlahovic just a few of the names linked with a switch to St. James’ Park.

However, the answer to every problem may not lie within the transfer market as Howe could look to bringing through a young gem instead of making a new signing in a certain position.

Save millions

One player who could be brought through into the academy to save PIF spending millions is forward Dylan Stephenson, who has been impressing this season.

Daily Mail reporter Craig Hope once said “he certainly knows where the net is” and his record for the youth team this season backs up that claim. He has scored 11 goals in 16 games for the under-23 side, with 10 in 13 in the league and one in three in the EFL Trophy.

Earlier this year, Magpies youth coach Neil Winskill heaped praise on the young attacker. He told the club’s official website:

“I’m thrilled for Dylan because he is such an honest, hard-working lad. He’s the type of player any team would like to have in their XI, who’s going to really put a shift in for you.

“Every game and training session, the physical stats come through and he’s always top of the charts but we had a chat during the week about the need for him to be consistent with his quality, and he spoke to me about how he thinks people will judge him on goals.”

This shows that Stephenson, who has also been dubbed as “adaptable” by coach Elliott Dickman, is willing to put the hard yards in on the pitch, which could be crucial in a relegation battle setting. It proves that he will not down tools if things are not going his way and he will continue to battle to the death and that could be something that the fans appreciate seeing.

Therefore, the 11-goal predator could be a promising player to bring through as he has the goal record to suggest that he has the potential to make an impact at first-team level and the work rate to earn the support of the fans. This is why Howe must unleash him in the senior side and offer him a chance to show what he can do.

If he can impress and score goals in the Premier League then it could save PIF from needing to spend millions of pounds on a new striker in January.
