Jhulan upbeat about India's prospects at World Cup

Jhulan Goswami, the India captain, is confident of her team’s chances at the Women’s World Cup despite weak performances recently. India were thrashed 5-0 in Australia in October and November, which followed a 4-0 mauling in a five-match contest in England a couple of months earlier. However, Jhulan was optimistic that the training camp held in Bangalore in January, and another which begins from February 20 in Mumbai, will be enough for the players to iron out the flaws.”Prior to our preparations at home, we had tough tours to England and Australia last year, and though both the tours ended in disappointment, they gave us an excellent opportunity to strengthen our strong areas and fix our weak links,” Jhulan told the , a Kolkata-based daily.”In terms of World Cup preparations, both series provided us with the chance to evaluate where we stood with ample time to find a way to lift our standards. By playing three months prior to the main event, we have given ourselves a very good chance to put ourselves back on track. Needless to say it was also a good wake-up call for us.”Jhulan, who was the ICC Women’s Cricketer of the Year in 2007, has picked up 105 wickets at 22.23 in 93 ODIs so far. If India do qualify for the final, to be played on March 22 at the North Sydney Oval, it will be her 100th match.”Playing 100 ODIs will be the perfect icing on the cake,” she said. “But I would like to focus on the tournament, as winning the World Cup will bring huge honour to the country while completing a century of ODIs will only be a personal landmark.”India were runners-up in the previous edition in South Africa in 2005, losing the final against Australia by 98 runs. They are placed in Group A with Sri Lanka, Pakistan and England, and will face Pakistan in the tournament opener at the Bradman Oval in Bowral on March 7.

England outclassed India by nine wickets at the North Sydney Oval to all but secure the No. 1 spot in Group B. The victory was set up by the bowlers – Holly Colvin and Jenny Gunn took three wickets each – who dismissed India for 169 after which Caroline Atkins and Claire Taylor struck half-centuries to ensure victory. England achieved the target in the 39th over, continuing their domination over India, having beaten them 4-0 in a home series in 2008.Several England players had spent between four to six months training and playing in Australia ahead of the World Cup and that practice paid off in today’s high-profile clash. None of India’s batsmen, with the exception of Mithali Raj, were able to cope against a disciplined bowling performance.Isa Guha gave England the early advantage. She bowled eight overs on the trot after England chose to bowl and struck two early blows while keeping the Indian batsmen on a leash. She trapped Anjum Chopra lbw for a duck and followed up with a caught and bowled to dismiss Thirush Kamini, reducing India to 9 for 2.India needed a revival and it came through Mithali and opener Anagha Deshpande. They added 52 for the third wicket before Deshpande, who scored 38, was caught at point, giving Gunn, who was reported for a suspect action on Monday, her first wicket. Mithali, however, remained steady and got her runs through boundaries in the arc between third man and cover. She also favoured midwicket, hitting Gunn and Brunt for fours in that region. She needed someone to keep her company but the middle order collapsed against Colvin’s left-arm spin. Bowling with tremendous flight and loop, Colvin drew Rumeli Dhar outside the crease and turned the ball past the bat to give Sarah Taylor an easy stumping. Soon after, she tempted Priyanka Roy into a mis-hit to midwicket and forced an edge from Sravanthi Naidu, leaving India on 109 for 6. Too many batsmen went for their shots and too few attempted to take singles to give Mithali strike. The situation became grim when Mithali, on 59, sliced Gunn to backward point.India were in danger of getting bowled out around 130 but they were given an unexpected boost by a last-wicket partnership between Amita Sharma and Gouher Sultana that was worth 43. Taking advantage of the batting Powerplay, Sharma ruined Gunn’s figures by smashing 21 runs off the 48th over. She began by hitting the first ball to the cover boundary and smashed two more to square leg before lofting a six over midwicket.Faced with a modest target, England’s openers Sarah Taylor and Atkins approached the chase sensibly. They took no risks and focused on seeing off the new-ball threat posed by Jhulan Goswami. They scored slowly, reaching only 47 after 15 overs, but the asking-rate was never a problem and they had plenty of wickets in hand. Sarah fell soon after but it was the only moment of success for India’s bowlers.Claire joined Atkins and they ran between the wickets with urgency and played sensible strokes. While Atkins focused on anchoring the innings, Claire picked up the run-rate, emphasizing her ranking as the No. 1 batsman by cutting her sixth ball to the backward point boundary before driving her ninth past mid-off.The runs continued to flow for Claire and she hit three fours in an over off Dhar. The first two were powerful shots through midwicket and mid-on and the last was a fierce cover drive which burst through the fielder’s hands at cover. Claire had imposed herself on the bowling and Indian hopes began to sag.The end came swiftly, with Taylor clouting Kamini for six over long on in the 38th over and whipping Roy through midwicket to score the winning runs in the next.Atkins, named player-of-the-match, said: “I wouldn’t call my innings a fluent one but our bowlers took all the pressure off us so I was able to scratch around and bat around the two good batters, Atkins, who was the Player of the Match, said. “It was great to bat with Claire as she keeps the run-rate up and I can just bat around her.”England coach Mark Lane was also pleased with his side’s performance. “It was a much improved performance in all three disciplines today. It was good to see Holly Colvin coming into her own and taking 3-22. We were excellent in the field with Lydia Greenway taking three catches.”

Michael Olise was superb for Crystal Palace

Crystal Palace came back from two goals down to salvage a draw against Leicester City at Selhurst Park in their Premier League clash over the weekend.

Kelechi Iheanacho caught centre-back Joachim Andersen napping just after the 30-minute mark to dispossess the Danish defender before racing away and providing the Foxes with a rather undeserved lead.

Veteran striker Jamie Vardy then doubled the visitor’s advantage going into halftime, but Palace went to recover well after the interval, ensuring they head into the international break in 14th position.

And one player was arguably more responsible for the capital club’s comeback than most. Summer signing Michael Olise entered the field of play as a 53rd-minute substitute, and it didn’t take him long to make an impact.

The 19-year-old winger got on the end of a Tyrick Mitchell cross, hitting his initial effort into a Leicester defender. He then reacted to the loose ball in emphatic fashion, smashing a volley past the helpless Kasper Schmeichel to bag his first goal for the south London outfit.

Olise then played a pivotal part in Jeffrey Schlupp’s equaliser. It was his initial ball into the opposition box that caused the danger, providing the Ghana international with the chance to score against his former employers.

As a result, the youngster was awarded a match rating of 7.5 out of 10 by SofaScore, the highest total received by any of his teammates.

And when looking at his underlying numbers, it’s easy to understand why. He only played 17 minutes during the match but made a devastating impact against Leicester. Olise achieved a passing accuracy of 82%, won three of his four duels (75%) and played two key passes.

Those would have been handy numbers for a starter, let alone a second-half substitute. Together with Schlupp, Palace looked a real threat. Yet, it was undoubtedly Olise who was the most exciting of the pair.

It was an extremely promising showing from the ex-Reading forward who is yet to feature from the off for the Eagles due to an injury. He’ll now surely be hoping to make his first start for the club after his heroic showing for Patrick Vieira’s charges on Sunday.

And, in other news…Parish must seal Palace move for “perfect” 23y/o maestro, Vieira needs him

Opening Test blues frustrate Arthur

Mickey Arthur, the South African coach, has called for more rigorous preparation for future home Test series, following the 2-1 defeat against the Australians last week

Mickey Arthur: “It’s one thing training, but you can’t underestimate the effect of game time”•AFP

Mickey Arthur, the South African coach, has called for more rigorous preparation for future home Test series, following the 2-1 defeat against the Australians last week. Arthur said the rustiness that grips the team in the first Test match of a series has led to early defeats in each of the last three seasons. He felt a practice game would be necessary to get the team in shape.”I am frustrated with the situation. That is why we got together five days before the first Test rather than the usual three days,” Arthur told . “A two-day game will be ideal. The batsmen can bat for a day and the bowlers bowl on the other. It’s one thing training, but you can’t underestimate the effect of game time.”Australia lost the opening Tests against India in Johannesburg and against West Indies in Port Elizabeth, but fought back to win the next two Tests and the series on both occasions. They lost the opening Test against Australia in Johannesburg this season but failed to mount a similar fightback and lost the series after the defeat in Durban. The team has experienced similar first-Test blues on recent away tours but showed a lot of character to bounce back. They hit back after being asked to follow on at Lord’s and in Perth, chased a mammoth 414 to set up their historic series win in Australia.South Africa face England at home this summer and Arthur has suggested the team practice in smaller centres to avoid distractions.”There are just too many commitments and things in Johannesburg that deflects attention,” Arthur said. “Players are asked to do things for team sponsors and even their own sponsors. I believe the team will prepare a lot better in a small city or town.”

Raphinha tipped for possible Leeds exit

Leeds United could find it hard to keep hold of Raphinha after his impressive form for Brazil, according to Sky Sports pundit Kevin Phillips.

The Lowdown: Raphinha on fire for Brazil

The 24-year-old has been fantastic for the Whites over the last year and his form earned him a call-up to Brazil’s squad during the current international break.

Raphinha made an immediate impression on his Selecao debut, registering two assists in his country’s 3-1 win away to Venezuela on Friday, showing exactly what he is capable of producing.

The Latest: Leeds exit soon?

Speaking to Football Insider, Phillips admitted that the winger’s performance will only increase the chance of him moving on from Leeds eventually, with elite clubs sure to be eyeing up a transfer. The former Sunderland striker said:

His stock is rising, big time. To perform like that for Brazil, it doesn’t really get any better.

“We know the impact he has had on the Premier League. He has been amazing. But, to do it for Brazil is just brilliant. It puts his stock even higher.

“A performance like that has pros and cons for Leeds. On one hand you think, ‘Brilliant. He’s improving all the time.’

“But, on the other hand you fear that there will be a lot of interest from other clubs next year. They might try and nick him.

“It is great news for Leeds that he will come back buzzing and full of confidence though. Hopefully he can keep up that level of performance.”

The Verdict: Tough to keep hold of him

Much like Kalvin Phillips, in an ideal world Raphinha would stay at Leeds for the rest of his career – he has been hailed as ‘incredible’ by Phil Hay – given how important he is to Marcelo Bielsa. He is their leading scorer this season with three goals and, as per WhoScored metrics, is their best-performing player by a distance.

In reality, the Whites may have to accept that a fresh challenge could appeal to the 24-year-old in the near future, with the Brazilian perhaps keen to play for a Champions League club or a team challenging for league titles.

Whether or not it is as early as next summer remains to be seen, but as Kevin Phillips has hinted, it is difficult to see Raphinha staying at Elland Road in the long-term if he continues to thrive for club and country.
