Hyderabad look to secure semis spot

Cricinfo previews the ICL match between Hyderabad Heroes and Mumbai Champs on November 6

The Big PictureDefending champions Hyderabad will look to seal a semis spot as they take on bottom-placed Mumbai in their penultimate game of the league phase. The narrow one-run defeat against Delhi in the last game however will make them wary of not taking teams in the bottom half too lightly. They could have booked their passage to the last four with a win then, but will now have to take full advantage of the extra game they have in hand.Having registered their first win against Delhi, Mumbai were quickly brought down to earth by Chennai in the previous encounter. They were mauled by 75 runs as Chennai went on to post the highest total of 206 in the tournament. However, Nathan Astle would want to cap off a rather disappointing campaign with a win here against Hyderabad in their last game.Where they rankHyderabad are in fourth spot with eight points but with Lahore currently on six points and looking to make a late charge they would want the safety of the top three. A win with a good net run-rate may even propel them to No. 2 in the points just behind Chennai.Mumbai are placed right at the bottom of the table and chances of improving their standing look very grim. A win would take them level on points with Ahmedabad – if Ahmedabad fail to beat Lahore in their final game – who are just above them in eighth place with four points. However, a poor net run-rate of – 0.949 might still confine them to the last place.Form guide (last five matches, most recent first)Hyderabad: LWWLW
Mumbai: LWLLLStats Mumbai hold the record for giving away the most extras in the tournament so far – 25 against Chennai. The 75-run loss in that game was also the biggest margin of victory (in terms of runs) for this edition. Jimmy Maher is joint leader with P Bhima Rao of Ahmedabad for the most number of catches this season with five. Michael Kasprowicz has conceded the most runs in an innings while bowling. His four overs against Chennai cost 58 runs.Players to watchHyderabad’s leading run-getter Abdul Razzaq will look to give his team the perfect start at the top of the innings with Jimmy Maher. He will look to make amends with the bat after failing in the last game. Hyderabad will also rely heavily on his bowling and hope he adds to the seven wickets he has picked up.Mumbai captain Nathan Astle led from the front in the last game against Chennai. His 61-ball 68 which comprised three boundaries and four sixes showed what a destructive force he could be in this format. He has also come handy with the ball picking up six wickets in as many matches at 18.00, with a best of 4 for 19 against Chandigarh.Quotes”We know which areas need to be worked on and it is only a matter of putting plans in place and then executing them well”

Wolves loan Marques to Belenenses

Many Wolves fans have been left fuming after some news emerged on Christian Marques.

As per Transfermarkt, the central defender has left the Midlands club to sign for Belenenses SAD on loan for the rest of the 2021/22 season.

Marques has never actually played a senior game for the Molineux faithful, but was left on the Transfermarkt).

His departure just leaves Bruno Lage’s squad even lighter, and although he already has five centre-backs to choose from, the fact that Marques made the bench for two games of the campaign suggests that he should have been kept as another option.

Wolves fans on Marques exit

These WWFC supporters fumed as the exit news was shared on Twitter, with one even going as far as to claim that it was ‘ridiculous’:

Yuvraj primed for Test comeback

Yuvraj Singh is the top contender to replace Sourav Ganguly, who retired last month, in the Indian squad for the two-Test series against England, scheduled to start in Chennai on December 11

Yuvraj Singh is the top contender to replace Sourav Ganguly, who retired last month, in the Indian squad for the two-Test series against England, which will be picked in Chennai on Thursday afternoon. Gautam Gambhir, handed a one-Test ban by match referee Chris Broad for elbowing Australia’s Shane Watson during the Delhi Test, will return for the series, scheduled to start in Chennai on December 11.Yuvraj, who last played a Test against South Africa in Kanpur in April, has virtually sealed his berth after his imperious display in the ODI series against England. He ended as the top run-maker with two spectacular centuries, reversing a lean start at the beginning of the season. In the three Challenger Trophy games he had single-digit scores and failed in the solitary Ranji match he played before the England series. But the selectors, including chairman Kris Srikkanth, recently indicated that Yuvraj would be the best man to fill Ganguly’s middle-order slot. It’s not unclear whether the selectors will retain M Vijay, who was plucked out of a Ranji game to fill in for Gambhir in the Nagpur Test against Australia. They face a hard choice between Vijay and S Badrinath, who was part of the squad against Australia. Though Badrinath has been seen as the frontrunner in the past to play in the middle order, Vijay was impressive against the new ball and as a close-in fielder. The chance of any fresh face(s) being picked in the middle order remains slim, but the likes of Cheteshwar Pujara and Rohit Sharma cannot be ruled out. Rohit was part of the Test squad in Sri Lanka while Pujara has scored three triple centuries for Saurashtra – one in the Ranji Trophy and two in an Under-22 tournament — this season. Their cause would have been helped had England’s lone practice game gone ahead. The bowling unit is likely to be retained, with Zaheer Khan and Ishant Sharma sharing the new ball and Harbhajan Singh and Amit Mishra the two specialist spinners. Munaf Patel will continue to be the third seamer but the fate of his partner, RP Singh, is unclear. There were reported differences between Dhoni and the selection panel over RP’s selection ahead of the ODI series against England and it boiled over into a controversy after a selector leaked it to a member of the press.Current indications are that the selectors will pick a 14-man squad but if they opt for 15, it could include a third spinner. Piyush Chawla is the leading candidate, especially given Pragyan Ojha’s shoulder injury, picked up while fielding in the Cuttack ODI against England.Probable squad
Virender Sehwag, Gautam Gambhir, Rahul Dravid, Sachin Tendulkar, VVS Laxman, Yuvraj Singh, M Vijay/S Badrinath, Mahendra Singh Dhoni (capt, wk), Harbhajan Singh, Zaheer Khan, Ishant Sharma, Amit Mishra, Munaf Patel, RP Singh.

Celtic: Kevin Phillips drops Georgios Giakoumakis verdict

Sky Sports pundit Kevin Phillips believes that new Celtic striker Georgios Giakoumakis can hit the ground running at Parkhead following his deadline day move from VVV-Venlo.

The Lowdown: Giakoumakis has enjoyed a sharp rise up the ranks

Rising from obscurity into the limelight last campaign, the Greece international finished the season as top scorer in the Eredivisie with 26 goals, despite his team plummeting to relegation [The Guardian].

Attracting attention from suitors around Europe, he completed a move to Celtic on transfer deadline day for £2.5m [The Scottish Sun] and he looks set to fill the void of former Hoops marksman Odsonne Edouard, who departed for Crystal Palace on the same day.

The Latest: Phillips believes Giakoumakis can get the Celtic support ‘excited’

Ever the fox in the box during his playing days, former Sunderland striker Phillips has now dropped his verdict on the 6 foot 1 ace.

Speaking in an exclusive interview with Football Insider, the 48-year-old has been impressed by Giakoumakis, claiming: “I think they should be excited”.

Phillips then added: “I say it every week and again, this is no disrespect to the Scottish league, the Dutch league is probably on a par with it. Then you are coming into a club where they create opportunities left right and centre.

“They can score goals. If I’m a Celtic fan, I’m excited. You look at his record and see he can score goals.

“Those games against Rangers will be a struggle but the rest of the games we can do well. I would be excited.”

The Verdict: Celtic will be hoping Giakoumakis can continue his goalscoring exploits in Glasgow

Relating to the high volume of chances the Scottish giants usually create on a weekly basis – their 24.3 shots per game average is by far the highest in the Premiership [WhoScored] – Phillips provides an excellent explanation as to why Hoops fans should be excited about their new arrival.

Constantly providing a threat in attack, the 26-year-old averaged 3.2 shots per game in the Dutch top flight in 2020/21 [WhoScored]. Furthermore, his tendency to get on the end of crosses regularly will add another string to Ange Postecoglou’s bow in offense that the Hoops have perhaps lacked in recent times.

Moving forward, the Celtic support will be desperate to see Giakoumakis hit the ground running at Parkhead and will hope that his goalscoring exploits at VVV-Venlo can be replicated in Glasgow.

Jair rasga elogios a Bruno Silva: 'Hoje, é o melhor médio do Brasil'

Chanderpaul and Nash drive West Indies

Shivnarine Chanderpaul continued his dominance of world cricket by scoring his 20th Test century on the first day of the second and deciding Test against New Zealand at McLean Park

Shivnarine Chanderpaul continued his dominance of world cricket by scoring his 20th Test century on the first day of the second and deciding Test against New Zealand at McLean Park. Chanderpaul’s hundred was brought up with a flick off his hip to fine leg off Daniel Vettori just before stumps, with the innings steering West Indies to a useful 258 for 6.His partnership of 163 for the fifth wicket with Brendan Nash was the highlight for the visitors after a shaky morning session which had them wobbling at 74 for 4. The stand took the initiative away from New Zealand but they hit back as West Indies limped to stumps with the late loss of Nash and Denesh Ramdin.Chanderpaul, whose unbeaten 100 took him 214 balls with nine fours and three sixes, has produced an amazing 972 runs at 121.5 in 2008. The limits to his concentration seem immeasurable at present as he comes to the end of his second consecutive calendar year to yield an average of over 100.Nash joined Chanderpaul at the stroke of lunch and their long and patient stay gave the visitors a fighting chance of posting a respectable first-innings total on a flat pitch. Chanderpaul soldiered on throughout the day but lost his mainstay with the score on 237. Nash presented Daniel Flynn with a gift at short cover off James Franklin with the new ball, and was disappointed at missing his maiden century in his second Test. He walked off for a well-compiled 74 off 162 balls.Nash showed his natural talent and was strong square of the wicket. He cut nicely and collected runs off his pads, but also showed a very strong straight drive off the seamers and spinners.West Indies’ patience during the second session began to bear fruit as the New Zealand attack started to tire and become frustrated in the final session, before the second new ball was due. The pair’s confidence also grew as they began to trust both the pitch and their own instincts to push the score past 200.The New Zealand bowlers lost their patience and consistency through the latter stages of the second session and the beginning of the third as Chanderpaul and Nash prospered. However, Nash’s dismissal opened the door for New Zealand. The pair seemed to be shutting up shop with half an hour left before Nash’s resistance came to an end. Ramdin looked very nervous as he was forced to bat during the toughest period of the day just before stumps. He left a straight one from Vettori which cannoned into off stump. With the loss of the last two wickets, the visitors surrendered a substantial amount of momentum which they gained through the Chanderpaul-Nash association. The day ended in a similar note to how it began for New Zealand. West Indies, after winning the toss, squandered a golden opportunity in the first session with Ramnaresh Sarwan, Xavier Marshall and Sewnarine Chattergoon all falling to poor shot execution. Chris Gayle made 34 before being undone by O’Brien, who seamed one away and took the edge for Brendon McCullum to claim a simple catch.Sarwan played a loose cut off Jeetan Patel and he too was caught behind by McCullum. Marshall made 6 before pushing at a ball from O’Brien and guiding it to Jesse Ryder at third slip, who took a good catch low down to his right. Chattergoon slashed hard at a half volley from Vettori and Jamie How claimed a very sharp chance at second slip high above his head. West Indies will need their most consistent batsman, Chanderpaul, to rally the lower order on the second day.
