The Big PictureDefending champions Hyderabad will look to seal a semis spot as they take on bottom-placed Mumbai in their penultimate game of the league phase. The narrow one-run defeat against Delhi in the last game however will make them wary of not taking teams in the bottom half too lightly. They could have booked their passage to the last four with a win then, but will now have to take full advantage of the extra game they have in hand.Having registered their first win against Delhi, Mumbai were quickly brought down to earth by Chennai in the previous encounter. They were mauled by 75 runs as Chennai went on to post the highest total of 206 in the tournament. However, Nathan Astle would want to cap off a rather disappointing campaign with a win here against Hyderabad in their last game.Where they rankHyderabad are in fourth spot with eight points but with Lahore currently on six points and looking to make a late charge they would want the safety of the top three. A win with a good net run-rate may even propel them to No. 2 in the points just behind Chennai.Mumbai are placed right at the bottom of the table and chances of improving their standing look very grim. A win would take them level on points with Ahmedabad – if Ahmedabad fail to beat Lahore in their final game – who are just above them in eighth place with four points. However, a poor net run-rate of – 0.949 might still confine them to the last place.Form guide (last five matches, most recent first)Hyderabad: LWWLW
Mumbai: LWLLLStats Mumbai hold the record for giving away the most extras in the tournament so far – 25 against Chennai. The 75-run loss in that game was also the biggest margin of victory (in terms of runs) for this edition. Jimmy Maher is joint leader with P Bhima Rao of Ahmedabad for the most number of catches this season with five. Michael Kasprowicz has conceded the most runs in an innings while bowling. His four overs against Chennai cost 58 runs.Players to watchHyderabad’s leading run-getter Abdul Razzaq will look to give his team the perfect start at the top of the innings with Jimmy Maher. He will look to make amends with the bat after failing in the last game. Hyderabad will also rely heavily on his bowling and hope he adds to the seven wickets he has picked up.Mumbai captain Nathan Astle led from the front in the last game against Chennai. His 61-ball 68 which comprised three boundaries and four sixes showed what a destructive force he could be in this format. He has also come handy with the ball picking up six wickets in as many matches at 18.00, with a best of 4 for 19 against Chandigarh.Quotes”We know which areas need to be worked on and it is only a matter of putting plans in place and then executing them well”

Batsmen put NWFP in command

A round-up of the first day of the first-round matches of the Pentangular Cup

Cricinfo staff25-Oct-2008ScorecardAt 88 for 5, Federal Areas had been in danger of being bowled out on the first day of Pentangular Cup action in Karachi, but an unbeaten 103 from Usman Saeed ensured they finished with a respectable 270 for 9 against Sind.Sind’s trio of medium-pacers – Sohail Khan, Anwar Ali and Tanvir Ahmed – did the early damage after captain Shahid Afridi put the opposition in. Umar Amin’s 48 was the only substantial contribution from the top order before he was lbw to Tanvir, but Saeed, at No. 6, found support from allrounders Yasir Arafat (27) and Sohail Tanvir (45).The sixth and seventh wickets added 67 and 73 to put up a fight, but Tanvir Ahmed dismissed both Arafat and Tanvir, who hit seven fours, to keep his team in control. Naeem Anjum was out first ball to give Tanvir Ahmed his fifth wicket. Saeed, though, put on 33 with captain Iftikhar Anjum, and will resume batting on the second day with Shoaib Akhtar. Saeed’s 103 came off 186 deliveries, with 14 fours.
ScorecardThere was an unbeaten century in Quetta as well, but North West Frontier Province’s top order capitalised after Umar Gul chose to bat. The top three batsmen managed half-centuries, and two of them would perhaps be regretting not converting it to a big score.Left-hand opener Adnan Raees was the successful one; he finished the day on 122 not out as NWFP scored 293 in their 90 overs for the loss of two wickets. Yasir Hameed, the former international, did the bulk of the scoring as NWFP’s openers rattled up 104. His 72 needed just 78 balls, but he was out caught off left-arm spinner Saeed Anwar jnr.The rate of scoring reduced with Hameed’s fall, but runs came none the less for NWFP. Before he was bowled by Abdur Rauf on 82, Wajid Ali added 181 for the second wicket with Raees. Both batsmen scored at a strike-rate less than 50; Baluchistan captain Misbah-ul-Haq used seven bowlers in 90 overs.

Villa’s Philogene-Bidace was superb vs Barrow

If Dean Smith spent Monday night dreaming of the perfect Aston Villa performance, then he certainly got it when his side thrashed Barrow 6-0 in the Carabao Cup second round.

The Midlands club were superb from minute one, carving open the League Two side with relative ease time and time again, with a number of players really staking their claim for future involvement in the first-team.

Smith was keen to give a bunch of his side’s brightest young academy talents the chance to impress, and while Cameron Archer no doubt stole the post-match headlines thanks to his fine hat-trick, it was arguably Jaden Philogene-Bidace who was the real sensation.

Here on FFC, we called on Smith to unleash the 19-year-old flier last night, and in a follow-up poll, 99% of the people who voted wanted him to start too (127 to 1). And boy, did he not disappoint those who wanted him in the team!

As per Sofascore, he completed three of his four dribbles, including one that saw him drive into the penalty area with real purpose before being brought down.

And while he actually made just a mind-boggling seven passes over the course of the 90 minutes he was on the pitch, he made most of them count.

Two of them were key passes, including arguably the assist of the night when he checked back on the by-line before delivering a cute pass back into the path of Archer to fire home for his hat-trick.

He also won a team-high 11 duels which was a real indication of the kind of effort he put into both sides of the game, not just going forward.

And, writing in his post-match player ratings for The Birmingham Mail, Joseph Chapman gave him a nine, saying: “Very lively, extremely quick and so dangerous with his feet.

“Operated on both wings, and while on the right he won the penalty in the first half. Had more than one sight of goal, but he didn’t pull the trigger quickly enough. JPB dragged a shot wide of the post and blazed over with another, but he wonderfully teed up Archer’s treble.”

While of course Archer will be the talk of the town, it was Philogene-Bidace’s willingness to take players on, but equally show the fine composure to pick out his teammates in better positions, that would have left Smith absolutely raving on the side-lines.

The teenager was Villa’s unsung hero on the night.

Meanwhile, Aston Villa are plotting a late swoop for this star…

O time ocupa a13° posição na tabela.

Fred abre o placar

Zaga alternativa no segundo tempo

Richardson rips through forlorn Gloucestershire

Martin Williamson reports on the first day’s play between Middlesex and Gloucestershire at Lord’s

Alan Richardson: his first five-wicket haul since May 2007 © Splod
Although the season has almost a month to run, there was a distinctly autumnal feel to proceedings at a chilly Lord’s in a game with little at stake in terms of promotion. Middlesex, beset by rumours of internal disharmony and possible player exits, nevertheless did enough to take charge against a Gloucestershire side rooted to the bottom and without a Championship win all year.Shaun Udal lost his first toss as Middlesex captain but it wasn’t too costly. Gloucestershire struggled against a moving ball and Middlesex’s seam attack had them five down by lunch. David Brown (68) and Steve Snell (31) showed some fight after the interval, but Alan Richardson returned to nip out the tail and record his first five-wicket haul of an injury-hit summer.Richardson and Tim Murtagh caused no end of problems on a greenish pitch. William Porterfield fell leg-before half forward and then Kabir Ali played on to leave the visitors 6 for 2. The rest of the session was punctuated by frequent lbw shouts and a few edges, only one of which, to Murali Kartik at second slip, was spilled. Steve Finn removed Hamish Marshall with his first ball when he replaced Murtagh at the Nursery End, and Billy Godelman took a smart short-leg catch to account for Chris Taylor. At that stage Gloucestershire were 39 for 4 and looking likely to roll over, but at last Alex Gidman found in Brown someone prepared to dig. The pair steadied the innings only for Gidman to play on when Murtagh returned shortly before lunch.Oddly, the batting appeared easier in the first hour of the afternoon when the cloud cover was low. But once Finn nipped one back to trap Brown leg-before, there was little resistance. Richardson, in his third spell from the Pavilion End, benefited from some loose strokeplay to finish with 5 for 34 as the last three wickets went down in three overs.By the time Middlesex started their reply the sun was out but appearances were misleading. It was bitterly cold with a cutting breeze coming from behind the pavilion.Gloucestershire’s seamers posed few problems once the shine was off the ball, and the left-handed opening pair of Andrew Strauss and Godelman were rarely troubled. Both played well off their legs, and there was no shortage of opportunity to do so. Brown and Steve Kirby occasionally looked threatening, but there was little else to rouse the sparse crowd.Strauss eventually brought about his own downfall with a mistimed pull, and while that slowed the scoring rate, Middlesex continued to make steady progress. Ed Joyce, relived of the burden of captaincy in a bid to find form, and reportedly still in negotiations over his county future, started cautiously before unleashing two superb drives, one straight off the front foot immediately followed by an even better shot going back.Unsurprisingly in a wretched summer, the forecast for the next three days is poor. On today’s showing, the weather is about the only hope Gloucestershire have of avoiding yet another defeat.

Houve briga tanto dentro quanto fora do gramado.

Predicted Watford XI vs Aston Villa

Watford mark their Premier League return with a home fixture against Aston Villa on Saturday afternoon, with Xisco Munoz’s side hoping to kickstart with three points against Dean Smith’s side.

Following automatic promotion from the Championship last term, Watford have added a number of players to their squad, with summer signings Emmanuel Dennis, Danny Rose, Josh King, Peter Etebo, Juraj Kucka and Imran Louza all hoping to play a big part throughout the season.

However, in recent Premier League seasons, we have seen Watford fail to keep faith in those who got them promoted, and it will be interesting to see how many changes Xisco opts to make from those who performed so well in the second tier last season.

Here’s how Football FanCast expects the Spanish manager to line up his side at Vicarage Road today, with four players making their Watford debuts…

After an impressive second half of last season, combined with a solid Euro 2020 with Austria, Daniel Bachmann unsurprisingly starts in between the sticks against the Villans.

Kiko Femenia, William Troost-Ekong and Francisco Sierralta were all regulars in the Championship last season and will likely keep their places in defence, with Rose making his competitive Hornets debut after joining on a free transfer from Tottenham Hotspur earlier this summer.

In the absence of Will Hughes, who has been banished to the under-23s amid an ongoing transfer saga, Xisco is likely to name a much-changed midfield, with Etebo and Kucka making their debuts alongside a mainstay from last season in Tom Cleverley.

Ismaila Sarr’s performances are likely to be a big factor for Watford this season and he starts on the right-wing, with new signing Dennis earning a start on the left, although he could be pushed up front at some point in the game.

They support Troy Deeney in attack, with the 33-year-old proving in pre-season that he is fit and ready for the new campaign, and he will be looking to add to the 47 Premier League goals he has in his career thus far.

That leaves no place in the starting XI for Ken Sema, who played the second-most league minutes of anyone at Watford last season but could miss out today due to the influx of new competitors for his position out wide.
