Australia out for Ashes revenge

Cricinfo’s preview of the first Twenty20 between England and Australia at Old Trafford

The Preview by Will Luke29-Aug-2009Match factsSunday, August 30, 2009

Big PictureDirk Nannes’ debut Twenty20 international was for Netherlands, and it resulted in a remarkable win over England in the World Twenty20. Now, however, he has switched alliance to his birth-country Australia, who have their first opportunity for Ashes revenge when they take on England in the first of two Twenty20s at Old Trafford tomorrow, ahead of seven one-dayers.Both sides dispatched their Associate opponents in recent days – Australia beating Scotland and England just about avoiding a howler against Ireland – but neither team has yet to master the shortest of formats. Australia failed to reach the group stages of the World Twenty20 while England were beaten to the semi-finals post by West Indies. Also, Australia have lost their last five matches in a row; their last win came in February.Yet both teams have key one-day players of whom much is expected. For England, a lot was desired of Ravi Bopara in the World Twenty20; he gave encouraging performances of 46, 5, 2, 37 and 55. Now, though, he finds himself in a horrible rut which forced the selectors to opt for the debutant Jonathan Trott in the final Ashes Test, and though he bounced back with a double-hundred for Essex while England’s Ashes heroes were drowning in champagne, he fell for a duck in Belfast.Meanwhile Australia will have to do without Ricky Ponting, who flew home with the Test specialists, and he’s not expected to be back until the latter stages of the subsequent seven-match ODI series. And with England’s key player, Kevin Pietersen, also absent, these two Twenty20 internationals are an opportunity for someone else in both teams to stake their name.Form guide (last five matches, most recent first)
England – LWLWL
Australia – LLLLL
Watch out for…David Hussey hasn’t quite hit it big internationally as well as he has for Victoria, but his powerful first ODI hundred against Scotland has at least put him in good shape for the Twenty20s, and for Victoria in the impending Champions Twenty20 League in India. England stifled his brother until the final Ashes Test. Their Twenty20 bowlers will need to produce a similarly nagging approach against the other Hussey.Ravi Bopara: A double hundred for Essex confirmed, were it needed, that a big score was just around the corner for Bopara. After his summer horibilis in the Ashes, there is enough pride at stake for him to bounce back strongly and prove to the doubters that he can cope with, and fight back from, a terrible slump in form.Team newsAll change from the Tests, Australia pack a punch at the top of the order with Shane Watson, Dave Warner, Michael Clarke and David Hussey occupying the top four. Brett Lee managed two wickets against Scotland in his first proper international outing of his tour, and must be hell bent on proving both his fitness and class after a frustrating summer on the sidelines. Tim Paine will take the gloves to replace the injured Brad Haddin, and he got had an encouraging debut with the bat in the Scotland ODI with 29 from 38.Australia squad Shane Watson, David Warner, Michael Clarke (capt), David Hussey, Callum Ferguson, Adam Voges, James Hopes, Cameron White, Tim Paine (wk), Brett Lee, Mitchell Johnson, Nathan Hauritz, Ben Hilfenhaus, Nathan Bracken, Dirk Nannes.Joe Denly might have booked himself in for these Twenty20s following a mature, cornerstone knock 67 against Ireland, an innings without which England’s Ashes bubble might have exploded fantastically. Paul Collingwood, the captain, continues to bat without conviction, and much rests on the shoulders of England’s latest pin-up megastar, Stuart Broad. How often are we going to be saying that about him in the next few years?England (possible) 1 Ravi Bopara, 2 Joe Denly, 3 Owais Shah, 4 Jonathan Trott, 5 Paul Collingwood (capt), 6 Matt Prior (wk), 7 Luke Wright, 8 Adil Rashid, 9 Graeme Swann, 10 Tim Bresnan, 11 Ryan Sidebottom.Pitch and conditionsWell, it’ll be warmer than Edinburgh. That much is certain, though only a touch warmer: the BBC predict a chilly 17°c for Manchester on Sunday with showery “light rain” forecast throughout the day, which could force the involvement of the rain gods themselves, Duckworth and Lewis.Stats and triviaThis is only the second Twenty20 international staged at Old Trafford. The last match was in 2008 against New Zealand, which England won by nine wickets. And this is the fourth Twenty20 between the two countries. Australia have won the last two – played in January and September of 2007 – by 77 runs and eight wickets respectively.England have won eight out of 20 Twenty20s, all of which involved Kevin Pietersen, who is absent in this series through injury.Australia have a better record, winning 11 out of 23, and they score quicker, too: 8.48 runs-per-over to England’s 8.10.Michael Clarke has twice led Australia, in December 2007 and February 2008, winning them both.August is traditionally the wettest month for Manchester, averaging 79mm of rain and fighting off strong competition from November and December (78mm). It is also the warmest, with a mean temperature (in every respect) of 20c. Quotes”I’m just glad it’s out of the way.”
“The Holland one was a World Cup so that was a pretty big full house at Lord’s. This one here, playing in Edinburgh, a beautiful spot, it’s my first game playing for Australia, where I’ve been brought up. It’s a pretty big deal.”

Simeu can be Southampton’s next Stephens

Southampton currently have a number of players in their squad that have progressed through the club’s youth system such as James Ward-Prowse, Nathan Tella, Theo Walcott, Will Smallbone and Yan Valery among others.

One other current senior Saints star that worked his way through the youth system at the south coast club is defender Jack Stephens, who joined the youth ranks back in 2011 from Plymouth Argyle.

Since making his senior debut for the Saints back in January 2012 in an FA Cup victory over Coventry City, Stephens has gone on to make a total of 139 senior appearances for the club across all competitions, chipping in with six goals and five assists along the way.

The 27-year-old, who is currently valued at £7.2m according to Transfermarkt, played every minute of league action for Ralph Hasenhuttl’s side before unfortunately picking up a serious knee injury in their  0-0 draw against Manchester City, showing just how important he is to the team.

Despite only being 27, Stephens is still Southampton’s oldest current senior centre-back, meaning that the club could well be looking to find a replacement in the next few years.

[snack-amp-story url= “https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/check-out-the-latest-southampton-news” title=”Check out the latest Southampton news!”]

With this in mind, the club could already have their ideal next version of Stephens with 19-year-old centre-back Dynel Simeu, someone who could save millions in transfer fees on a potential successor.

Despite only joining the club back in July from fellow Premier League club Chelsea, the teenage defender, who is currently valued at £900k according to Transfermarkt, has appeared in all but one of the Southampton B team games so far this season, playing the full 90 minutes in all of them, showing just how important he is for them.

In addition to this, Simeu, who has previously been described as “one to watch” by journalist Neil Moxley during his time at Chelsea, has shown in recent weeks how much of a goalscoring threat he can be as well as a defensive unit by bagging in each of his two previous league outings.

Moving forward, if Simeu can keep playing regularly for the B team until the end of the season, then there’s every chance that he could start knocking on Hasenhuttl’s door to potentially get some first-team minutes under his belt and integrate himself among the rest of the senior players at St. Mary’s.

Looking even further down the line, Simeu definitely has what it takes to then potentially become a regular figure in the senior squad and potentially save the club plenty in extra transfer fees when they eventually need to look for a replacement for Stephens.

Liverpool fans flock to Ronald Araujo claim

Flocking to Twitter, many Liverpool fans have erupted with their verdicts as a transfer claim emerged involving Barcelona gem Ronald Araujo.

The 22-year-old, who is currently a regular in the Catalans’ backline, has already impressed his new boss Xavi with his ‘excellent character’ and positivity in training (Heavy).

Indeed, Araujo’s form over this past year has also garnered praise from club legends like Gerard Pique, with the World Cup-winning defender saying that the Barcelona youngster will be a top centre-half for the next ’10 or 15 years’.

Steadily earning a name for himself in La Liga, his performances have also attracted attention from some of the Premier League’s biggest names, including Liverpool. According to ESPN correspondents Moisés Llorens and Samuel Marsden, the Reds and FSG have sent representatives in an approach to the player amid his contract dispute at the Camp Nou.

His current deal expires in 2023 and Barcelona apparently see Araujo as ‘key to the future’ of their club, but they are aware the ‘greats of the Premier League’ pose a real transfer threat. This is where Liverpool and Chelsea come in, with both clubs said to be ‘on the prowl’.

Liverpool fans erupt…

As FSG make their first move for Aruajo by sending emissaries to Catalonia, it’s little wonder this news has prompted many Liverpool fans to erupt on Twitter.

The Uruguay international, who Pique also called ‘physically strong, fast and powerful’, is a valuable commodity with plenty of sell-on value and a winding-down contract.

Liverpool’s stance in potential negotiations is strengthened by his precarious situation, and Barca could feasibly be put under a bit of pressure to sell if he continues to delay a renewal.

Lauded as a centre-back who ‘has everything’ by Pique, Araujo would surely strengthen Liverpool’s backline.

Lumb and Ervine dominate Nottinghamshire

A round-up from the latest action in the County Championship

Cricinfo staff20-Aug-2009Division OneMichael Lumb converted his overnight century into a double and Sean Ervine weighed in with a hundred of his own to lead Hampshire to a massive first-innings total against Nottinghamshire at Trent Bridge. Resuming on 345 for 3 on the second morning, Hampshire lost Tom Burrows – caught by Bilal Shafayat off Charlie Shreck – but little did the hosts know that their next breakthrough would be 208 runs away. Lumb built on his score of 103 and achieved a career best of 219 – his maiden double-hundred – while Ervine cracked 104 off only 128 balls. Lumb was eventually caught behind off Samit Patel and his dismissal resulted in a flurry of lower-order wickets. Patel trapped Dominic Cork and Imran Tahir lbw for ducks to complete his four-wicket haul before Hampshire declared on 654 for 8. Facing such a mammoth total, Nottinghamshire needed a sound start but their openers managed only 29 before Matthew Wood was caught by Andre Adams off David Griffiths for 10. More trouble was round the corner as Tahir trapped Mark Wagh and the nightwatchman Darren Pattinson lbw for ducks. It wasn’t over, though, for Cork found Scott Newman’s edge, leaving Nottinghamshire on 48 for 4, 606 runs in the deficit.Tom Lungley struck three vital blows, cutting through the Yorkshire top order, to give Lancashire the edge in the Roses match on a rain-curtailed day at Headingley. The start of play was delayed and there was another interruption after Lancashire had progressed to 231 for 7 from 226. Mark Chilton, who was on 72 overnight, reached his century after the resumption and then Adil Rashid got rid of Nos. 10 and 11 to complete his five-for and skittle Lancashire for 276. Kyle Hogg then gave Lancashire the perfect start by dismissing Jacques Rudolph with the first ball of the innings before Lungley got into his stride. He dismissed Anthony McGrath for 17, trapped Joe Sayers lbw for as many, and caught Andrew Gale off his own bowling. Oliver Newby had also chipped in by taking a caught and bowled off Jonathan Bairstow as Yorkshire ended the second day on 131 for 5.Click here for the report on the second day’s play between Somerset and Sussex at Taunton.Click here for John Ward’s report from Chester-le-Street.Division TwoThe wickets continued to tumble at Chesterfield with 15 falling on the second day between Derbyshire and Northamptonshire after 13 fell on the first. Tim Groenewald was Derbyshire’s hero, taking 6 for 61 to help dismiss Northamptonshire for 246 – they were 137 for 3 overnight – and earning a nine-run lead. Groenewald’s figures included a spell of 4 for 9 in 23 balls as he knifed through the lower-order when Northamptonshire were poised to take a lead at 224 for 5. He picked up the wicket of Andrew Hall, who had collected a run-a-ball 36, by inducing a loose drive to second slip to begin the slide. Derbyshire’s success with the ball was followed by a torrid time with the bat as Johann van der Wath had Wayne Madsen and Gary Park caught behind the wicket to leave them on 14 for 2. The situation did not improve and Derbyshire were 140 for 7 before Groenewald resisted with an unbeaten 45 and lifted the score to 212 for 8.As England’s top order disappointed in the deciding Ashes Test, the man who paid the price for a poor series continued his return to form as Ravi Bopara reached an unbeaten 83, to give Essex a solid reply against Surrey at Colchester, after Chris Schofield reached a maiden first-class hundred. The home side reached 221 for 3 with Bopara having so far put on 84 for the fourth wicket with captain Mark Pettini. John Maunders and Tom Westley opened with a stand of 77 before both fell in the space of two balls to Pedro Collins and Schofield. Matt Walker reached 22 before edging Stuart Meaker, who had earlier contributed a career-best 72. Schofield and Meaker took their seventh-wicket stand to 125, with Schofield finally crossing three figures after a previous career-high of 99. When he fell for 144, Meaker ensured Surrey bagged full batting points.AJ Harris took 5 for 26 as Gloucestershire were skittled for 138 Grace Road to give Leicestershire control, although the home side stumbled to 49 for 5 after not enforcing the follow-on. James Taylor was batting at both ends of the day, reaching an unbeaten 83 in the first innings, and not out on 9 second time around with the lead on 279. Harris’ spell left the visitors in trouble on 26 for 3 during an incisive opening where he bowled Kadeer Ali and Alex Gidman either side of trapping Hamish Marshall leg before. The spinners also played their part as Claude Henderson removed James Franklin for 12 and Jigar Naik bowled Chris Taylor for the top score of 50. The lower order offered very little as Harris completed his haul by removing Stephen Adshead and Ian Saxelby in three balls. After batting again, Leicestershire lost both openers to Steve Kirby – Paul Nixon failing to score from 31 balls – and Marshall’s part-time spin picked up two more before the close of an action-packed day.1st dayThe Middlesex spinners shared four wickets and Steven Finn impressed with three as they took charge on the opening day against Glamorgan at Swansea. Shaun Udal, back in the side after dropping himself for the last Championship match, claimed the important wicket of Herschelle Gibbs and also collected Mike Powell. Gareth Berg made the first breakthrough when he removed Will Bragg (28) before Udal snared Gibbs when a paddle sweep found backward short leg. Powell and Gareth Rees (40) steadied the innings with a stand of 64 but they followed each other back in quick succession. Rees was Finn’s first wicket, and the fast bowler followed up removing Jim Allenby and Mark Wallace – caught at third slip and gully respectively. Murali Kartik then strengthened Middlesex’s grip and ended Jamie Dalrymple’s innings moments before rain forced the players off although the total edged over 200 during a brief resumption.

Nothing succeeds like success

This was a disappointing cricket match at the Goodyear Park,Bloemfontein

Erapalli Prasanna22-Jul-2009
©AFPThis was a disappointing cricket match at the Goodyear Park,Bloemfontein. Kenya were completely outplayed by a resurgent Indianside, riding on the wave of a convincing win against the heavyweightSouth Africa at the Centurion.Kenya had lost the match much before it started, for they came inwithout any kind of a game plan or strategy. The decision to bat firstmust have been done with the hope that they can put up a decent total. The uneven bounce of the wicket upset their confidence and theattempts to hit their way out of trouble, made things more difficultfor their comfort. It is in such difficult times that you need batsmen to dig deep andplay sensibly. Kenyans showed no such trait of applying themselves, they went about trying to blast their way out of this quagmire byplaying across the line, a recipe for disaster, which manyinexperienced team falls for. What else can I say? It was an abject surrender of a side, which didnot have any self-belief. At times the Kenyans looked like that theywere in a hurry to get over with the match. Kenya clearly lacks it inthem to make an impression at the highest level; overall it was apathetic performance by the minnows from Africa.Having said that; let me not take anything away from the Indians. Theydid what best they could do to keep the momentum going. The winagainst South Africa seems to have instilled a lot of confidence inthis young team. Nothing succeeds like success and I think SouravGanguly and John Wright deserve to be commended after this wonderfulturnaround of fortunes in the African continent. The present team management has shown a lot of faith in the abilitiesof one man, Ajit Agarkar. There was no doubt in my mind that Agarkarwill have to deliver the goods in South Africa. The young man has donewell so far in all the three outings and has looked the most potent ofthe bowlers. It was heartening to see Agarkar realise the importance of bowling agood line and length on a pitch with uneven bounce. The benefits werethere to be seen, four wickets! This should have boosted his moralefor the games to come. © CricInfoOn the contrary, Javagal Srinath, with so much experience under hisbelt, bowled a disappointing line. The two wickets he got, though, were purely on line and length. Anil Kumble is always a dangerousbowler on such a wicket. He looked sharp enough and the three wicketshe picked will help him a lot during this tour.I think that the Indians used this opportunity to give Virender Sehwagand Deep Dasgupta a chance to get used to the South African battingconditions. The two batsmen played well to take India to a mostconvincing win and also to show the depth of the Indian batting. This was not a game that one will want to remember for a long time. Itfailed to throw a challenge to the resources of the Indian side and itturned out to be a dismal one-sided affair.
