When he lost the toss, Kumar Sangakkara said a team that couldn’t overcome the tall order of chasing under the low Dambulla floodlights was not a good team. They were big words all right, but ones his side backed up.On a helpful pitch, Lasith Malinga was too good, Angelo Mathews canny, and New Zealand were dismissed for 192. After Tillakaratne Dilshan fell early in the chase, Upul Tharanga provided Sangakkara solid support in a partnership that set up the base for a shot at a bonus point. It helps if the captain himself scores a 48 as stylish as it was solid on a tricky pitch. Amid falling wickets, Sri Lanka played positive, innovative cricket, but couldn’t make the target inside 40 overs and secure the bonus point.BJ Watling’s half-century on debut, and Nathan McCullum’s fighting 36 with the tail, were the bright spots for New Zealand. They will kick themselves for losing three wickets to relatively innocuous bowling from Mathews, when compared with the efforts of Malinga and Nuwan Kulasekara. BJ Watling and Ross Taylor overcame a tough examination against seam and swing, but New Zealand lost wickets in pairs thrice to surrender the toss advantage. Watling, who was the seventh New Zealander to score fifty-plus on debut, survived the early seam, but he too was part of one of those braces, pulling a short and wide delivery from outside off, with his weight on the front foot. It was the first ball of Mathews’ second spell.New Zealand’s innings began with a no-ball, but in that same over Malinga consumed Martin Guptill through a leading edge. Kulasekara extracted massive seam movement from the other end. The batsmen focused on survival, but Sangakkara suddenly removed Malinga after a spell of 3-1-9-1. With Mathews came a slight release of pressure. In his first two overs he went for three consecutive boundaries, over the on side in the seventh and twice through the off side in the ninth. In his third over, though, Mathews made a smart comeback.Taylor, who is good at making contact with the ball while moving across the stumps, was slightly slow on this occasion, and was caught plumb in front. As opposed to Kulasekara’s deliveries, this one from Mathews wasn’t predictable, and came in just enough to be hitting the stumps. Two balls later, Mathews floated a wide half-volley, which Kane Williamson edged because his feet were rooted. The only thing remarkable about that dismissal was the diving catch at first slip from Thilan Samaraweera. Two matches into his career, Williamson is yet to score an international run.Watling, the other rookie, had support from Scott Styris in a 52-run fourth-wicket stand, but the allrounder edged a sharp offbreak from Rangana Herath. Watling then welcomed Mathews back with that horror shot. New Zealand had gone from 47 for 1 to 47 for 3, and from 99 for 3 to 101 for 5. Malinga came back with two wickets in two balls, a smart slower ball and a superb yorker, to make it 123 for 7.In true New Zealand fashion, though, the lower order fought along with McCullum to take New Zealand to a potentially fighting total. It was not an easy pitch to bat on, and the bowling wasn’t pedestrian either. Once Sangakkara had the pitch measured up, though, it was just one stylish shot after another. The ball moved around for both Daryl Tuffey and Kyle Mills, but Sangakkara was watchful. He opened up when New Zealand brought on their back-up bowlers. Sangakkara welcomed Tim Southee with a lovely straight chip for four and kept his elbow held high, lest some photographers missed it. He went one better in the next over and played his other two special shots. Andy McKay’s first delivery was driven on the up through cover, with Sangakkara down on one knee, the follow through ending at his back. The next ball angled into the pads, and he whipped it, not through midwicket, but square leg. In the 15th over, he played another breathtaking straight drive, and overtook Tharanga, reaching 33 off 39, having been 13 off 24 at one point. It took a stunning catch from Guptill at short extra cover to end Sangakkara’s innings. By then, though, Sri Lanka were on their way. Any chance that New Zealand could have made anything out of that break disappeared when Styris, at slip, dropped a tough offering from Tharanga, on 44.In the 35th over, with 50 runs required, Sri Lanka called for the Powerplay but lost wickets as they pursued the bonus point. Chamara Kapugedara was held back, just in case things went wrong, and the tailenders were asked to go have fun. Kulasekara came, smote a six, and then got out. Herath came and went in three deliveries. Seven down. With eight runs required off six balls for the bonus point, though, Sri Lanka gave up the adventure and settled for victory with 9.1 overs to spare.

Player retention crucial for fan loyalty – Harbhajan

Harbhajan Singh: “If all players are going to be auctioned again, there won’t be any team loyalty”•Indian Premier League

India offspinner Harbhajan Singh feels players should have a say in which team they would like to represent going into the fourth season of the IPL. The player contracts signed so far were valid only for the first three years and there is speculation over whether teams will be allowed to retain players ahead of the upcoming season, which will also feature two new teams.”I believe in the Premier League, players have a choice to pick or reject offers to play for a certain team,” Harbhajan said. “If no player is allowed to continue with his team, (the whole team will break).”Harbhajan was concerned team loyalty and fan following would suffer if star players migrated from their current teams. “People associate me with Mumbai Indians. And I have some fan following being a Mumbai Indians player. If all players are going to be auctioned again, there won’t be any team loyalty. But then, big guys are going to set the rules of the new process.”The Pune coach Geoff Marsh is against player retention since it would represent a significant disadvantage to the new franchises. While Harbhajan’s loyalties lie firmly with Mumbai, he does not think playing for Pune would be very different. “I play for the Mumbai Indians. Like Pune, even Mumbai is in Maharashtra. So there is not much difference,” he said.Harbhajan paid tribute to retiring Sri Lankan offspinner Muttiah Muralitharan, who tipped Harbhajan as the only bowler likely to challenge his Test wicket tally. “No one can touch Muralitharan’s record in Tests. It’s sweet of him to say that. But realistically, I’m nowhere near that. I have learnt so many things from him. We will surely miss him.”

Everton: Lampard must axe Andre Gomes

Everton put on an impressive performance against Leeds United to secure their first Premier League win in seven games on Saturday afternoon in front of the home fans at Goodison Park.

Michael Keane, Seamus Coleman and Anthony Gordon all found the back of the net as the Toffees put on an offensive and defensive masterclass against their opponents, keeping their fourth top-flight clean sheet of the season.

The new Everton boss made a few changes to his side, replacing an injured Demarai Gray with Alex Iwobi and Donny Van de Beek starting instead of Andre Gomes alongside Allan in midfield, and it paid off.

One player who made an accomplished appearance for Everton on Saturday was Van de Beek, creating a goalscoring opportunity against Bielsa’s team with a key pass and winning three aerial duels (the most on either side). He also recorded the most tackles against Leeds (four) and recovered the ball 10 times to keep Everton ticking over during the course of the game.

With that being said, it is no coincidence that the 24-year-old’s performance came as Everton comfortably beat their opponents, so it may be the perfect opportunity for Lampard to now ruthlessly axe Andre Gomes from the side.

The £120k-p/w Portuguese midfielder, who was described as “reckless” by Everton journalist David Prentice, has had ample opportunities in the starting XI throughout the season to make an impact, with 10 Premier League appearances so far. His inclusion in the team had clearly fallen flat, as he has started in the last six games that the Toffees have lost.

With Van de Beek’s introduction to the team having such a huge impact on Everton’s performance compared to the display at St James’ Park in their previous game, Lampard will be likely to persist with the Manchester United loanee, pushing Gomes to the bench. It would seem that the latter just isn’t of the standard that the Toffees need any more.

Michael Hussey and Nannes take Australia through

Michael Hussey reprised his favourite role, of the rescue artist, to steer Australia to a competitive total before Dirk Nannes’ pace and some world-class fielding confirmed there would be no repeat of last year’s embarrassing first round World Twenty20 exit. Bangladesh’s defeat also meant defending champions Pakistan, the team most likely to take the flight home in case Group A was decided on net run-rate, also progressed to the Super Eights.Bangladesh were dreaming of another famous upset in a global tournament in the Caribbean after their armada of spinners thrived on a pitch with bounce and turn at the Kensington Oval to cut Australia to 65 for 6. The slow bowlers had been so effective that there had been no boundaries for more than ten overs after Michael Clarke got off the mark with a lovely hit over long-off in the fourth over, before Hussey and Steven Smith pounded 74 runs to push Australia to 141.Playing with typical Australian resilience, Hussey and Smith more than doubled the total in the final seven overs. The boundary drought ended with Hussey swiping a short ball from Abdur Razzak to square leg in the 15th over. The real acceleration came two overs later, when Hussey surgically picked off 17 runs off Mashrafe Mortaza – there was an effortless flick for six, a tickle to fine leg for four and a dab to third man for four more.Smith’s runs were collected in a more brawny manner. A powerful lofted cover drive brought him his first four and there were two brutal leg-side sixes off Razzak in the penultimate over, before he was run-out for a quick 27, his first major batting performance on the international stage. The pair’s heroics came after a limp top-order show. Mortaza surprised Australia’s power-hitting openers with the extra lift he extracted from the track in the opening over, but regular programming seemed to have returned when David Warner muscled a six and a four off Shafiul Islam in the next. Mortaza had Shane Watson top-edging towards backward square leg in the third over, before Bangladesh’s spinners came on to choke the runs, which resulted in a slew of wickets. Neither Clarke nor the promoted Brad Haddin could score fast, and the Twenty20 specialists, David Hussey and Cameron White, also flopped to leave Australia fretting. But on a pacy pitch, Bangladesh’s top order was even more feeble. Shaun Tait worried Imrul Kayes with a string of fast and furious deliveries in the first over before trapping him with a slower one. In the next over, Tait swooped at third man to take a tough, low catch to send back the experienced Mohammad Ashraful. Nannes’ short-of-a-length bowling fetched him two wickets in the fourth over when Aftab Ahmed and Mahmudullah miscued attempting cross-batted strokes. With Bangladesh at 15 for 4, both Australia and Pakistan fans were a happy lot.Shakib and Mushfiqur Rahim, two of the best Bangladeshi batsmen, showed some fight and hitting ability in a 48-run stand but another stunning catch ended their resistance. Hussey enhanced his claim for the Man-of-the-Match award by haring back towards the square leg boundary and diving to pluck a slog-sweep from Shakib.Bangladesh’s chances evaporated with that dismissal, and they hobbled along to 114 before being bowled out in the 19th over. Australia’s dominance in the field was shown by the number of dot balls they bowled – 58. The bowling attack looks fearsome, the fielding is top-notch and after sweeping through the initial phase, if Clarke’s men repeat their performance against India, the odds on Australia claiming the one world title to elude them will shorten considerably.
