LCFC can raise funds by selling Benkovic

Leicester have been struggling with an injury crisis lately, and it has reflected in their performances and league position in the Premier League as they go into the second half of their season.

The Foxes have also recently had games postponed due to a virus outbreak in the camp, which has added to Leicester’s inability to climb the table into a much more comfortable position in the top half of the Premier League table, where they have finished inside of for the last four seasons.

Brendan Rodgers would have been hoping to look to the winter transfer window to make new additions to the side to add more depth after losing key players like Jamie Vardy and Wesley Fofana to injury and gain more reliability in fitness going into the new year, however, it doesn’t seem to be an option.

The Irish manager spoke to the press last month, hinting at a quiet window for the club due to lack of funds:

“To be fair I am not sure we have the funds to do that to be honest. It is one where you just have to make do with what you have,” Rodgers revealed.

If Leicester’s predicted quiet window stems from a lack of funds, the manager could have a look at his squad and offer them up to other clubs in a bid to boost funds and bring in the players to add the depth needed to cover key positions in the squad during periods of injury.

One player who seems to be out of favour in Rodgers’ squad is Filip Benkovic, who is yet to feature for Leicester City this season after returning from a loan spell at OH Leuven in the summer. In fact he has only featured twice in the senior team for the Foxes, once in an FA Cup game in 2020, and the other in an EFL Cup game in 2018.

The £32k-per-week centre back who was once hailed “sensational” by his manager, Rodgers, has not had the opportunity to make his mark on the team, even in the Foxes’ poor form in the first half of the campaign with the side conceding more goals than they have scored so far.

Their defensive play has come into question on many occasions, especially when the side has now conceded 11 goals in their last four Premier League games, with six of those leaked against Manchester City on Boxing Day.

If the manager isn’t going to play the defender it makes sense for the club to sell him to raise funds, allowing Rodgers to add players with the boss claiming that the club now has “a different focus” in the transfer window.

Celtic make official bid for Mehdi Ghayedi

Celtic are interested in a deal to bring Mehdi Ghayedi to Parkhead in the January transfer window.

What’s the talk?

That’s according to a claim made by Hatam Shiralizadeh (via The Scotsman), with the journalist revealing in a post on Twitter that Celtic have made an official offer to Shabab Al Ahli for the 23-year-old, although the UAE side are believed to have rejected this bid as they do not want to part with the versatile winger this month.

However, Shiralizadeh goes on to state that Ange Postecoglou is desperate to seal a deal for the Iran international before the end of the current transfer window, with Celtic thought to be preparing a second offer for the forward.

In his post, the journalist said: “Shabab Al Ahli have turned down an official bid from Celtic for Mehdi Ghayedi. UAE side don’t want to sell the Iranian striker in January, however, Celtic are determined to sign the young talent, so they are planning to offer a new bid for the 23-year-old.”

“Jota-type trickster”

Despite his tender age and diminutive stature – standing at just 5 foot 5 tall – it is easy to see why Postecoglou is so eager to get a deal over the line for Ghayedi this January.

Indeed, the left-winger – who can also be deployed on the right flank and at centre-forward – already boasts a quite incredible record of goals scored and assists provided in his short professional career, having bagged 41 goals and registered 27 assists over 154 outings for Esteghlal FC, Iranjavan FC and Shabab Al Ahli – directly contributing to a goal every 159 minutes of football played.

[snack-amp-story url=”https://www.footballfancast.com/?post_type=web-story&p=664142″ title=”Check out the latest Celtic news!”]

However, it is not only the number of goals that is impressive about the £1.08m-rated forward, but also the quality of his strikes.

Indeed, Ghayedi appears to have something of a knack for popping up in the dying stages of a match when his side are most in need of a moment of magic, such as his 94th-minute winner against Sharjah FC back in September.

The 23-year-old picked up the ball in the middle of the park before sitting a defender down and curling a shot into the far corner – with the finish being dubbed an “extraordinary killer goal” by ADSportsTV.

As such, it is not difficult to understand why Bhoys Analytics recently dubbed the youngster a “Jota-type trickster,” nor why Navid Molaaghaei described Ghayedi a “magician,” as the Iranian starlet very much seems to be a player in the same mould as the Portugal U21 international, as well as undoubtedly being a talent who has a much higher ceiling than someone like Mikey Johnston, or even James Forrest.

'Fresh' Sehwag raring to go

The Indian opener has said he is fit and will play the final against Sri Lanka tomorrow in Dhaka

Virender Sehwag has said he is fit and will play the final against Sri Lanka tomorrow in Dhaka. Sehwag sat out the last two games, leading to speculation that he was indisposed, but he confirmed today that he was just “rested” by the management.”There was no problem,” Sehwag said. “I was only being rested. I am feeling fresh after the break and looking forward to playing the final. It has given a chance to the youngsters and Dinesh Karthik appeared in good nick in both the games.”Sehwag also praised Virat Kohli for his impressive showing so far. Kohli has been the tournament’s top-scorer so far, scoring 273 runs in four matches at 136.50, including one hundred and two fifties. “Kohli has grown in confidence from the Kolkata game and taken it forward from there,” Sehwag said. “The important thing is he is making it count in the middle.”Dew has been a big factor in the tournament with all the games won by teams chasing. Sehwag said that dew will play a part but wasn’t sure whether it would completely dictate proceedings. “Dew will be a factor. But you never know what’s going to be a winning score. We saw what happened in Rajkot between the two teams. I would probably say a score of around of around 350-360 could be a winning score if we are to bat first.”Sri Lanka captain Kumar Sangakkara too felt that dew won’t determine the game. “It will be a factor without doubt but we have got to learn to live with it. We cannot give up just because the toss has been lost. I am sure both teams will fight hard tomorrow.”While six India players arrived for the optional practice session in the evening, Sri Lanka practiced in the morning at full strength. Chanaka Welegedara and Suranga Lakmal were seen practicing bowling yorkers and bouncers for an extended period of time. Sangakkara dismissed queries whether it was the match strategy, saying it was just the pre-match routine. Sri Lanka used the bouncer tactic successfully against Bangladesh in the first game but are yet to use it with any consistency against India in this tournament.Sangakkara said he was aware of the Kohli threat and that his bowlers would need to operate with a set-field against him. “He [Kohli] has been in good touch and has been able to get runs consistently in the last few games but we cannot be bothered too much by that,” Sangakkara said. “We just have to stick to our plans and bowl to him according to the field. It’s important for us to get our game right and concentrate on what we are doing.”

Celtic: Hoops set to open Jota talks

Celtic are preparing to open talks with Benfica over a permanent transfer for Jota, according to The Daily Record’s Scott Burns.

The lowdown

The Hoops have already sealed three January deals, recruiting Daizen Maeda, Yosuke Ideguchi and Reo Hatate from Japan’s J1 League. According to Burns, it’s full steam ahead as they negotiate the terms of a long-term deal for Spurs loanee Cameron Carter-Vickers.

Like the American defender, Jota completed a season-long loan move to Celtic on the final day of the 2021 summer transfer window. Under their agreement with Benfica, the Hoops have the option to buy the 22-year-old winger for £6.5m.

The latest

According to The Daily Record, Celtic intend to buy Jota and ‘are looking’ to initiate discussions with Benfica about the specifics of the deal.

Burns claimed that talks are likely to centre on the fee, the payment period and the possibility of add-ons. He also noted that Ange Postecoglou would like to complete ‘the bulk’ of his January transfer agenda quickly.

The verdict

This could be huge for Celtic. Jota has been excellent this season, scoring eight goals and providing six assists. Only Kyogo Furuhasi (15) can better his tally of 14 goal involvements, and Jota has played four fewer games (via BBC Sport).

Indeed, European football expert and journalist Alex Barker has gone as far as to describe him as ‘Celtic’s wonder talent’.

What’s more, even if Celtic fans don’t want to think about this right now, he’s a player who could net a huge transfer fee further down the line. For instance, Pedro Almeida reported that they could sell him on for as much as £25.5m.

In a footballing and financial sense, a permanent deal for the 22-year-old makes so much sense and would be foolish to disregard.

Broom heroics in vain in massive chase of 411

Batting went into fifth gear at the Aorangi Oval in Timaru as Canterbury set a New Zealand domestic record by piling on 410 for 5, boosted by Rob Nicol’s century

Batting went into fifth gear at the Aorangi Oval in Timaru as Canterbury, boosted by Rob Nicol’s century, hit 410 for 5 – a record total in New Zealand domestic cricket. Otago took up the challenge in their chase and Neil Broom, who helped himself to a big hundred, made Canterbury sweat but they ultimately won by 39 runs.Nicol and Michael Papps got Canterbury going with an opening stand of 160 in 25 overs. Papps made a quick 78 off 79 balls before he was bowled by Broom. Canterbury more tham doubled their score during the second half of the innings, propelled by another century stand. Nicol and Peter Fulton added 127 for the second wicket before Nicol departed for 132. Fulton fell 12 short of his century but there was more misery in store for the Otago bowlers as Shannan Stewart led a late assault, smashing 55 off 21 balls – with four fours and five sixes – to take Canterbury past 400.That surpassed the 376 for 3 by Central Districts against Otago at Pukekura Park, New Plymouth, in 1996-97. The only Otago bowler to concede less than six an over was Nathan McCullum, who took 1 for 56 off his ten overs.Otago lost Leighton Morgan for 4 in the second over but the joy was shortlived for Canterbury as Broom cut loose, as did Shaun Haig who made 46. Three consecutive half-century stands (including two 90-plus stands) made things interesting. When McCullum fell in the 41st over, Otago had lost half their side with another 131 needed. Their best hope was for Broom to stick around till the very end but he fell in the 43rd over for a career-best 164, coming off 130 balls with 12 fours and seven sixes. Ian Butler’s frenetic unbeaten 53 off 26 balls gave Otago hope but in the end, their brave efforts ended at 371. A total of 781 runs were scored, making it the overall fourth highest match aggregate in limited-overs.The win puts Canterbury in second place in the points table after five rounds, but Otago are at the bottom.

Asif and Kaneria help level series

The very shape and variety of this attack, the threat of wickets alive in each of them, did for New Zealand at the Basin Reserve

The Bulletin by Osman Samiuddin06-Dec-2009
Scorecard and ball-by-ball details
How they were outMohammad Asif’s nine wickets took his series tally to 17•Getty Images

If Pakistan are not to go another three years and 12 Tests without a win, much will rest, as it has always, on their bowling. The very shape and variety of this attack, the threat of wickets alive in each of them, did for New Zealand at the Basin Reserve in Wellington, taking Pakistan to an ultimately comfortable 141-run win to level the series, going into Napier. Mohammad Asif and Danish Kaneria were the heavies this innings, but at all times Mohammad Aamer and a luckless Umar Gul were chomping at the bit behind them.Typically, the route to victory was a convoluted one, for dismissing 16 batsmen – they dropped six catches blind penguins wouldn’t have let go in the second innings – is clearly more fun than just ten. Little, however, could be done about a breathtaking counter from Ross Taylor, who left Pakistan dazed and confused and briefly raised hopes of an audacious steal; only after he fell half an hour before lunch, in the nineties for the second Test running, could Pakistan afford to hang a little looser.A dull morning had promised much for them, as Aamer and Kaneria struck early, reward for the batsmen’s own sins more than anything. If only New Zealand had a few more Taylors they would have walked this one. He was the only man standing, cigar in mouth, chest and guns out and willing to chest-bump Pakistan around, as he has through the series. The gulf between him and some of New Zealand’s batsmen is as wide as that of Mexico. He had started a dull morning like a man on speed. Quick hands and feet helped him drive easily through covers but an ugly slog across the line for six off Asif unleashed something even more in him. Adrenaline and heart, rather than just head, carried him through an exhilarating high-risk, high-octane bouncer battle with Gul where words were exchanged as freely as were blows and boundaries. The hooks weren’t always textbooks though when were textbooks last any good? Eyes came off the ball regularly, but intent takes a batsman a long way these days. He took care to mix in some more dapper strokeplay as well, a whippy cut through point and a couple of fine sweeps off Kaneria that easily carried for six. Before you knew it, he had put on fifty with Brendon McCullum, though it was more monopoly than collusion really. Some control came back Pakistan’s way with the return of Aamer and the nearing of Taylor’s hundred, a spell before lunch where run-scoring calmed down a little. Pakistan lost what little they had gained as Gul dropped a sitter at point from McCullum: what he was doing at a position made famous by men such as Jonty Rhodes will take some answering. Yesterday’s drops, dollies each one of them, were suddenly looking a little less funny. And when McCullum was rightly reprieved two overs later by the review system – hitting the ball rarely makes a good case for leg-before – things seemed to be not going as much Pakistan’s way as they would have liked. But the impressive Aamer persisted from round the stumps, no doubt furthering comparisons with you-know-who. Taylor’s nerves – hidden so well for so long – reappeared as he chased one and finally, as hell froze over, a Pakistani slip catch was held onto. Straight after lunch, Kaneria shut the door temporarily on the spin debate in Pakistan, reminding all of the innate beauty of his art. McCullum was done in by a delicious legbreak, and the googly that got Daryl Tuffey would have – and has – gotten rid of better men.Iain O’Brien, in his last home Test, smiled and slogged his way to a highest Test score but that was pretty much that, time left only for a couple of confirmations. One, that Daniel Vettori is not only the most dependable batsmen in his side, he is among the most irritating to bowl to the world over. And two, that even if this bowling attack remains intact for Pakistan, they might need to shoot a few of their fielders if they are to continue winning.

Younis defies buoyant Zimbabwe

Misbah-ul Haq and Younis Khan defied Zimbabwe with a century stand but the home side still retained the edge after three days

The Report by Siddarth Ravindran05-Sep-2013
Scorecard and ball-by-ball details
Younis Khan played another combative innings•AFP

All through this Test match, there’s been a wait for Zimbabwe’s inexperienced team to falter. Sure they bowled well when the pitch was fresh in the first session of the game, but could they do it when the track eased up? They did. Sure they bowled well on the first day, but could their brittle batting stand up to Pakistan’s highly rated bowling? They did.The third day was supposed to be the best day for batting in Harare; would their new-look bowling be able to do the job? They certainly started well, bagging three early wickets to consolidate on the 78-run advantage they had after the first innings, causing plenty of excitement over the possibility of Zimbabwe’s first Test win over a top eight side in 12 years. Then they came up against the seasoned firefighters, Misbah-ul-Haq and Younis Khan, who with some old-fashioned Test batting helped Pakistan erase the deficit. There has been a clamour in Pakistan for inducting more youngsters in the team, but it was Pakistan’s two oldest batsmen who revived the side from a precarious 23 for 3 with a 116-run partnership. Both Younis and Misbah were content with preserving their wicket, not searching for quick runs. They were happy to leave everything they could and put away the flashy shots – the reverse-sweep was brought only to counter a 7-2 leg-side field when offspinner Prosper Utseya was operating round the wicket. The pair neutralised Zimbabwe’s limited attack for more than three hours and though they were plenty of half-chances – stumping appeals, inside-edges and bottom edges – the wicket proved elusive.Younis ended the day unbeaten on 76, a significant innings for a man who had only one 50-plus score in his past 10 Test innings, and was phased out of the ODI side earlier this year. He has made his name as a man who scores when the team is down, a reputation he underlined with another combative innings.Though the favourite adjective to describe Pakistan cricket is ‘mercurial’, there is one near certainty when they play – a Misbah half-century. In 10 of his past 13 international innings, he has passed 50, almost all of them after the top order has combusted. On none of those occasions has he gone on to a hundred, and he didn’t today either.Zimbabwe would have been downcast if Pakistan had gone to stumps with only three wickets down. Instead, soon after Misbah reached his fifty, he pushed a catch to cover. Zimbabwe knew just how big a moment it was. The bowler Shingi Masakadza set off on a celebratory run, before pumping his arms and screaming at the skies. In contrast, Misbah was on one knee, bat on the floor with his arms covering his face.Younis and Shafiq safely negotiated the final 11 overs of the day, taking the lead to 90 and ensuring two specialist batsmen were still in the middle. The rescue operation was needed after some good work from Zimbabwe’s bowlers. As in the first innings, they produced the early breakthroughs not with magic deliveries but by sticking to the basics of line and length. The sixth over of the innings, bowled by Tinashe Panyangara, which produced the wicket of Khurram Manzoor showcased their method of operation – pitching the ball up and constantly attacking the stumps, making the batsman play. With several deliveries swerving away in the over, Manzoor decided to shoulder arms to one, which turned out to be a straight ball that thudded onto his pads. It looked a touch high but the umpire thought otherwise, and for the second time in the game, Manzoor’s innings ended early through a tough decision.Azhar Ali, who played a vital role in rescuing Pakistan after their top-order failed in the first innings, couldn’t do the job this time, as the accurate Panyangara had him trapped lbw for a duck. Neither of the opening bowlers provided any cheap runs, and Panyangara’s figures read 7-4-6-2 at one stage.Mohammad Hafeez has had a forgettable 2013 in Tests, and could have added a golden duck to his string of low scores this year, but his first-ball edge landed short of slips. He didn’t last too long anyway, falling tamely after driving a low catch to short cover. His dismissal for 16 left him with a paltry 64 runs in eight innings this year. That strikes only buoyed a resolute Zimbabwe, whose lower order had hung around for more than an hour in the morning session to fatten what had been a slender overnight lead. Saeed Ajmal’s variations proved too much for them, though, and he wiped out the final three wickets to end up with a seven-for, the second of his career. His threat looms large over Zimbabwe over the next two days as well.
