Malinga, Mathews set up comfortable win

When he lost the toss, Kumar Sangakkara said a team that couldn’t win chasing under the low Dambulla floodlights, which is a tall order, was not a good team. Big words all right, but ones his side backed up

When he lost the toss, Kumar Sangakkara said a team that couldn’t overcome the tall order of chasing under the low Dambulla floodlights was not a good team. They were big words all right, but ones his side backed up.On a helpful pitch, Lasith Malinga was too good, Angelo Mathews canny, and New Zealand were dismissed for 192. After Tillakaratne Dilshan fell early in the chase, Upul Tharanga provided Sangakkara solid support in a partnership that set up the base for a shot at a bonus point. It helps if the captain himself scores a 48 as stylish as it was solid on a tricky pitch. Amid falling wickets, Sri Lanka played positive, innovative cricket, but couldn’t make the target inside 40 overs and secure the bonus point.BJ Watling’s half-century on debut, and Nathan McCullum’s fighting 36 with the tail, were the bright spots for New Zealand. They will kick themselves for losing three wickets to relatively innocuous bowling from Mathews, when compared with the efforts of Malinga and Nuwan Kulasekara. BJ Watling and Ross Taylor overcame a tough examination against seam and swing, but New Zealand lost wickets in pairs thrice to surrender the toss advantage. Watling, who was the seventh New Zealander to score fifty-plus on debut, survived the early seam, but he too was part of one of those braces, pulling a short and wide delivery from outside off, with his weight on the front foot. It was the first ball of Mathews’ second spell.New Zealand’s innings began with a no-ball, but in that same over Malinga consumed Martin Guptill through a leading edge. Kulasekara extracted massive seam movement from the other end. The batsmen focused on survival, but Sangakkara suddenly removed Malinga after a spell of 3-1-9-1. With Mathews came a slight release of pressure. In his first two overs he went for three consecutive boundaries, over the on side in the seventh and twice through the off side in the ninth. In his third over, though, Mathews made a smart comeback.Taylor, who is good at making contact with the ball while moving across the stumps, was slightly slow on this occasion, and was caught plumb in front. As opposed to Kulasekara’s deliveries, this one from Mathews wasn’t predictable, and came in just enough to be hitting the stumps. Two balls later, Mathews floated a wide half-volley, which Kane Williamson edged because his feet were rooted. The only thing remarkable about that dismissal was the diving catch at first slip from Thilan Samaraweera. Two matches into his career, Williamson is yet to score an international run.Watling, the other rookie, had support from Scott Styris in a 52-run fourth-wicket stand, but the allrounder edged a sharp offbreak from Rangana Herath. Watling then welcomed Mathews back with that horror shot. New Zealand had gone from 47 for 1 to 47 for 3, and from 99 for 3 to 101 for 5. Malinga came back with two wickets in two balls, a smart slower ball and a superb yorker, to make it 123 for 7.In true New Zealand fashion, though, the lower order fought along with McCullum to take New Zealand to a potentially fighting total. It was not an easy pitch to bat on, and the bowling wasn’t pedestrian either. Once Sangakkara had the pitch measured up, though, it was just one stylish shot after another. The ball moved around for both Daryl Tuffey and Kyle Mills, but Sangakkara was watchful. He opened up when New Zealand brought on their back-up bowlers. Sangakkara welcomed Tim Southee with a lovely straight chip for four and kept his elbow held high, lest some photographers missed it. He went one better in the next over and played his other two special shots. Andy McKay’s first delivery was driven on the up through cover, with Sangakkara down on one knee, the follow through ending at his back. The next ball angled into the pads, and he whipped it, not through midwicket, but square leg. In the 15th over, he played another breathtaking straight drive, and overtook Tharanga, reaching 33 off 39, having been 13 off 24 at one point. It took a stunning catch from Guptill at short extra cover to end Sangakkara’s innings. By then, though, Sri Lanka were on their way. Any chance that New Zealand could have made anything out of that break disappeared when Styris, at slip, dropped a tough offering from Tharanga, on 44.In the 35th over, with 50 runs required, Sri Lanka called for the Powerplay but lost wickets as they pursued the bonus point. Chamara Kapugedara was held back, just in case things went wrong, and the tailenders were asked to go have fun. Kulasekara came, smote a six, and then got out. Herath came and went in three deliveries. Seven down. With eight runs required off six balls for the bonus point, though, Sri Lanka gave up the adventure and settled for victory with 9.1 overs to spare.

Player retention crucial for fan loyalty – Harbhajan

India offspinner Harbhajan Singh feels players should have a say in which team they would like to represent going into the fourth season of the IPL

Harbhajan Singh: “If all players are going to be auctioned again, there won’t be any team loyalty”•Indian Premier League

India offspinner Harbhajan Singh feels players should have a say in which team they would like to represent going into the fourth season of the IPL. The player contracts signed so far were valid only for the first three years and there is speculation over whether teams will be allowed to retain players ahead of the upcoming season, which will also feature two new teams.”I believe in the Premier League, players have a choice to pick or reject offers to play for a certain team,” Harbhajan said. “If no player is allowed to continue with his team, (the whole team will break).”Harbhajan was concerned team loyalty and fan following would suffer if star players migrated from their current teams. “People associate me with Mumbai Indians. And I have some fan following being a Mumbai Indians player. If all players are going to be auctioned again, there won’t be any team loyalty. But then, big guys are going to set the rules of the new process.”The Pune coach Geoff Marsh is against player retention since it would represent a significant disadvantage to the new franchises. While Harbhajan’s loyalties lie firmly with Mumbai, he does not think playing for Pune would be very different. “I play for the Mumbai Indians. Like Pune, even Mumbai is in Maharashtra. So there is not much difference,” he said.Harbhajan paid tribute to retiring Sri Lankan offspinner Muttiah Muralitharan, who tipped Harbhajan as the only bowler likely to challenge his Test wicket tally. “No one can touch Muralitharan’s record in Tests. It’s sweet of him to say that. But realistically, I’m nowhere near that. I have learnt so many things from him. We will surely miss him.”

'System not producing enough black cricketers' – Ntini

Makhaya Ntini, the South Africa fast bowler, has said the existing structure to identify black cricketers in the country’s rural areas is not yielding the desired results

Makhaya Ntini, the South Africa fast bowler, believes the existing structure to identify black cricketers in the country’s rural areas is not yielding the desired results. Ntini, among his country’s most renowned sporting personalities and himself a product of that structure, is raising funds to build an academy in the Eastern Cape and hopes it will help in the development of more black cricketers.”We do have a structure in South Africa where they are looking for black cricketers outside the usual areas, the cities. They go to the rural areas to try and find promising youngsters,” Ntini told . “But when you are talking about whether it’s developing, or it’s still going down a bit, it’s a very rare person who will answer in the first way. I would say cricket from the point of view of the black community is not the same as when Khaya Majola or Dr Ali Bacher were around, when it was booming, we had all the schools getting together to play some games.”Then it was easier to see who was a very good cricketer, who could go to the high schools and develop their cricket. Now it’s not so easy. I would like that to change.”Ntini is South Africa’s ambassador for the FIFA World Cup which begins in the country in less than a week. For a cricketer to represent his country in that capacity at a global event, Ntini said, was very special. “As a cricketer for me to be there, and part and parcel of what’s going on in our country, it’s a huge thing, something I’m proud of as a country, as a person and as an individual.”Ntini acknowledged cricket in South Africa was still a sport dominated by whites, and for black cricketers to compete and succeed, they had to work that much harder. “Cricket in South Africa is not exclusively white, but it is more white-dominant. The football is more black-dominant, so they are two different ball games in every respect,” Ntini said. “For those of us who don’t play football, we have to make sure we are 10% ahead of anything else, regarding fitness, regarding preparation, everything, for us to compete with the other players. In a white-dominant sport, to stay there for longer, those kind of things we have to go through.”Earlier in the year, in the Test series against England, Ntini became the fifth South African cricketer to play 100 Tests. His performance, however, had been on a decline and he was dropped after his 101st. He is currently representing Kent in the English domestic season but remains hopeful of a return to international cricket. “I have enjoyed my time [with Kent] and I would definitely love to come back, but first I must sort out my cricket life back home and see if I am still involved with the national team. If not, playing county cricket will be my second option,” he said.”I only need 10 [Test] wickets to get to 400, and I am crossing my fingers I will be given that opportunity. If it was not me, if it was anyone else, only 32 and still needing 10 wickets for 400, he would definitely [get the chance]. You know, ‘We’ll try and get him those wickets’.” Ntini had expressed his disappointment at not having heard from the selectors since being dropped. Andrew Hudson, Cricket South Africa’s chief selector, responded saying Ntini will be considered for selection for the national side’s upcoming series, following his encouraging stint with Kent.

'ODI cricket will grow stronger' – Lorgat

Haroon Lorgat, the chief executive of the ICC, has reaffirmed his faith in the ODI format, reposing faith on its ability to draw big crowds and generate sizeable viewership

Haroon Lorgat is bullish about the future of ODI cricket•AFP

Haroon Lorgat, the chief executive of the ICC, has reaffirmed his faith in the ODI format, expressing optimism over its future given its ability to draw big crowds and generate sizeable viewership. Lorgat said the ICC, together with member boards, would continue to experiment with changes to the format that would make it more appealing. He was speaking on the eve of the 3000th ODI, to be played in Southampton, incidentally, by the same two teams that inaugurated the format in 1971 – England and Australia.”That game at the Melbourne Cricket Ground was arranged on very short notice after a Test match had been washed out and nobody was really sure what would happen,” Lorgat said. “When around 46,000 people showed up to watch I think the organisers realised they were on to something big. Since that day it has been hugely successful and we have been treated to some of the great moments of cricket through ODIs.”The first three World Cups, beginning with 1975, were 60-overs-a-side tournaments while the ones that followed were all 50 overs. The game, over the years, has undergone significant changes but without altering the basics of cricket, Lorgat said. “That first ODI nearly 40 years ago involved the bowling of 40 eight-ball overs per innings and the structure of the game has been constantly evolving ever since. Over the years various initiatives have been trialled and refined and we now have quite a different spectacle to the one that was first on show.”Coloured clothing, white balls, fielding restrictions, bowling limitations, Powerplays, free-hits and many other aspects of the game have all been introduced but the unmistakable and unshakable core skills required by batsmen, bowlers and fielders are still intact.”And the broad appeal remains strong. ODIs still attract big crowds and enormous television viewing figures. The ODI series between England and Australia that gets underway tomorrow will be hugely well-attended and the recent ODIs in Ireland and Scotland were also sell-outs.”Cricket Australia recently announced it would experiment with a split-innings one-day format in the country’s next domestic season. Lorgat said the “evolution” of one-day cricket would continue to make it relevant to changing times. “As we prepare for the 10th staging of the ICC Cricket World Cup in Bangladesh, India and Sri Lanka next year, the importance of this format to the game remains very high,” he said. “I have no doubt the ODI will continue to adapt and evolve – in fact we always encourage our Members to trial new initiatives at domestic level to see if they work – and above all, I have no doubt the ODI will continue to strengthen long into the future.”
