Amjad Khan, the Danish-born fast bowler, will leave Kent when his contract expires at the end of the 2010 season with the county unable to afford him a new deal.Khan, 29, burst onto the county scene in 2002, picking up 63 wickets in his first season with Kent. After being awarded British citizenship in 2006, he popped up on the England selectors’ radar and overcame a career-threatening knee injury to make his Test debut against West Indies at Port of Spain in March 2009.”Amjad has been with the club for nine seasons and we are very sorry to see him leave,” said Jamie Clifford, Kent’s chief executive. “These are financially difficult times for the club and sadly we are not currently in a position to make Amjad a meaningful offer.”This has been a very hard decision. However, we believe that it is the right one given the financial context. I am sure the club’s members and supporters will join me in thanking Amjad for all his efforts and wish him the very best as he moves on.”Khan, who has continued to battle injury, understood Kent’s tough situation but admitted it was tough to have to leave the county. He will now have to hope there is a county willing to take a risk with his uncertain fitness.”I am sorry to be leaving having been with the club since 2002,” he said. “Ideally I would have liked to have continued my career with Kent but it is not to be. I sympathise with Kent’s off-field financial pressures and know that that the key people wanted me to stay. I look forward to new challenges with renewed vigour and believe I have what it takes to put myself back in the England frame.””It is disappointing that the club couldn’t offer Amjad a contract that would have seen him stay,” added Kent’s captain Robert Key. “He has been a pleasure to play cricket with over the last nine seasons and I have no doubt that our loss will be another county’s gain. I wish him the very best.”

Hay: Phillips must start for Leeds v Palace

Kalvin Phillips must start for Leeds United in their crucial Premier League clash with Crystal Palace tonight, according to journalist Phil Hay.

The Lowdown: Huge game for Leeds

The Whites face a massive game as they make the trip to Selhurst Park to take on a Palace side who have done well under Patrick Vieira this term.

Burnley’s recent resurgence in form has dragged Leeds back into the relegation picture, with Jesse Marsch’s side now only two points clear of the Clarets, having played one game more.

Phillips hasn’t started a match for the Whites since early December because of a lengthy injury-enforced absence, but he could be involved from the kick-off on Monday night.

The Latest: Hay calls for Phillips to start v Palace

Writing in a Q&A for The Athletic on Monday morning, Hay claimed that the midfielder should, and likely will, be named in Marsch’s starting line-up against the Eagles tonight. The journalist stated:

“Kalvin Phillips is fully fit and there’s surely no question about him at Selhurst Park – he has to start.

“He can make a significant difference and the fact that he’s back at full fitness just as Adam Forshaw is out for the season is so important.

“Phillips is in line to start. I don’t think that can even be up for debate with Forshaw missing.”

The Verdict: Has to happen

Leeds’ campaign has now reached its most critical point, with the Whites on the verge of being dragged into the relegation zone if results don’t improve.

For that reason, it is time for Marsch to take a punt on Phillips from the start at Palace, with the 26-year-old arguably among the most influential players at the club. As Hay mentions, Forshaw’s enforced absence makes it even more paramount for the manager to include the England international in the line-up.

Phillips already has two cameo appearances under his belt since returning earlier this month, and now is the time to try and test him for a full 90 minutes, or at least an hour or so.

In other news, Leeds have reportedly stepped up their interest in one player. Find out who it is here.

Malinga, Mathews set up comfortable win

When he lost the toss, Kumar Sangakkara said a team that couldn’t win chasing under the low Dambulla floodlights, which is a tall order, was not a good team. Big words all right, but ones his side backed up

When he lost the toss, Kumar Sangakkara said a team that couldn’t overcome the tall order of chasing under the low Dambulla floodlights was not a good team. They were big words all right, but ones his side backed up.On a helpful pitch, Lasith Malinga was too good, Angelo Mathews canny, and New Zealand were dismissed for 192. After Tillakaratne Dilshan fell early in the chase, Upul Tharanga provided Sangakkara solid support in a partnership that set up the base for a shot at a bonus point. It helps if the captain himself scores a 48 as stylish as it was solid on a tricky pitch. Amid falling wickets, Sri Lanka played positive, innovative cricket, but couldn’t make the target inside 40 overs and secure the bonus point.BJ Watling’s half-century on debut, and Nathan McCullum’s fighting 36 with the tail, were the bright spots for New Zealand. They will kick themselves for losing three wickets to relatively innocuous bowling from Mathews, when compared with the efforts of Malinga and Nuwan Kulasekara. BJ Watling and Ross Taylor overcame a tough examination against seam and swing, but New Zealand lost wickets in pairs thrice to surrender the toss advantage. Watling, who was the seventh New Zealander to score fifty-plus on debut, survived the early seam, but he too was part of one of those braces, pulling a short and wide delivery from outside off, with his weight on the front foot. It was the first ball of Mathews’ second spell.New Zealand’s innings began with a no-ball, but in that same over Malinga consumed Martin Guptill through a leading edge. Kulasekara extracted massive seam movement from the other end. The batsmen focused on survival, but Sangakkara suddenly removed Malinga after a spell of 3-1-9-1. With Mathews came a slight release of pressure. In his first two overs he went for three consecutive boundaries, over the on side in the seventh and twice through the off side in the ninth. In his third over, though, Mathews made a smart comeback.Taylor, who is good at making contact with the ball while moving across the stumps, was slightly slow on this occasion, and was caught plumb in front. As opposed to Kulasekara’s deliveries, this one from Mathews wasn’t predictable, and came in just enough to be hitting the stumps. Two balls later, Mathews floated a wide half-volley, which Kane Williamson edged because his feet were rooted. The only thing remarkable about that dismissal was the diving catch at first slip from Thilan Samaraweera. Two matches into his career, Williamson is yet to score an international run.Watling, the other rookie, had support from Scott Styris in a 52-run fourth-wicket stand, but the allrounder edged a sharp offbreak from Rangana Herath. Watling then welcomed Mathews back with that horror shot. New Zealand had gone from 47 for 1 to 47 for 3, and from 99 for 3 to 101 for 5. Malinga came back with two wickets in two balls, a smart slower ball and a superb yorker, to make it 123 for 7.In true New Zealand fashion, though, the lower order fought along with McCullum to take New Zealand to a potentially fighting total. It was not an easy pitch to bat on, and the bowling wasn’t pedestrian either. Once Sangakkara had the pitch measured up, though, it was just one stylish shot after another. The ball moved around for both Daryl Tuffey and Kyle Mills, but Sangakkara was watchful. He opened up when New Zealand brought on their back-up bowlers. Sangakkara welcomed Tim Southee with a lovely straight chip for four and kept his elbow held high, lest some photographers missed it. He went one better in the next over and played his other two special shots. Andy McKay’s first delivery was driven on the up through cover, with Sangakkara down on one knee, the follow through ending at his back. The next ball angled into the pads, and he whipped it, not through midwicket, but square leg. In the 15th over, he played another breathtaking straight drive, and overtook Tharanga, reaching 33 off 39, having been 13 off 24 at one point. It took a stunning catch from Guptill at short extra cover to end Sangakkara’s innings. By then, though, Sri Lanka were on their way. Any chance that New Zealand could have made anything out of that break disappeared when Styris, at slip, dropped a tough offering from Tharanga, on 44.In the 35th over, with 50 runs required, Sri Lanka called for the Powerplay but lost wickets as they pursued the bonus point. Chamara Kapugedara was held back, just in case things went wrong, and the tailenders were asked to go have fun. Kulasekara came, smote a six, and then got out. Herath came and went in three deliveries. Seven down. With eight runs required off six balls for the bonus point, though, Sri Lanka gave up the adventure and settled for victory with 9.1 overs to spare.

Predicted Tottenham line-up vs Wolves

Tottenham return to Premier League action today as they look to bounce back from their 3-2 defeat to Southampton in midweek.

Antonio Conte’s side were stunned by a quickfire double from the Saints as they gave up a 2-1 lead to end up losing the match, with Che Adams heading in the winning goal.

They now come up against a Wolves team who are two points and one place behind them in the Premier League table. Bruno Lage’s men have won five of their last eight games in all competitions but did lose 1-0 to Arsenal last time out.

How many changes will Conte make to the team? Here is our predicted XI…

We are predicting that he will make three alterations to the side, with Rodrigo Bentancur, Dejan Kulusevski and Matt Doherty coming in.

Conte has confirmed that Eric Dier will not be fit enough to make his return from injury. This means that he will not be available for selection and, therefore, the back three may remain the same from the defeat to the Saints, with Christian Romero, Davinson Sanchez and Ben Davies lining up in defence.

At wing-back, Doherty could replace Emerson Royal after the Brazilian’s disappointing showing earlier this week. He only completed 73% of his passes and made one error leading to a show, registering a SofaScore rating of 6.4. This could lead to the Irishman being handed an opportunity to play against his former side.

In midfield, Bentancur could come in for Harry Winks. The £91k-per-week Englishman was dreadful against Southampton and deserves to lose his place for this match. As per SofaScore, he was dribbled past three times, made one error leading to a shot and made one tackle, whilst failing to make an interception or block.

This could open up the door for the January signing to make his first Premier League start for Spurs. In 30 minutes off the bench in midweek, he made one tackle and one interception whilst also winning two of his three duels and completing 100% of his attempted dribbles – as per SofaScore. This suggests that he could impress if given the chance to play a full match as he was able to make a solid contribution off the bench.

Finally, we are predicting that Kulusevski will start on the right of the front three. With games coming thick and fast, Conte may look to rotate his attack in order to avoid burnout and potential injuries, which could see the Sweden international make his full league debut for Spurs.

Player retention crucial for fan loyalty – Harbhajan

India offspinner Harbhajan Singh feels players should have a say in which team they would like to represent going into the fourth season of the IPL

Harbhajan Singh: “If all players are going to be auctioned again, there won’t be any team loyalty”•Indian Premier League

India offspinner Harbhajan Singh feels players should have a say in which team they would like to represent going into the fourth season of the IPL. The player contracts signed so far were valid only for the first three years and there is speculation over whether teams will be allowed to retain players ahead of the upcoming season, which will also feature two new teams.”I believe in the Premier League, players have a choice to pick or reject offers to play for a certain team,” Harbhajan said. “If no player is allowed to continue with his team, (the whole team will break).”Harbhajan was concerned team loyalty and fan following would suffer if star players migrated from their current teams. “People associate me with Mumbai Indians. And I have some fan following being a Mumbai Indians player. If all players are going to be auctioned again, there won’t be any team loyalty. But then, big guys are going to set the rules of the new process.”The Pune coach Geoff Marsh is against player retention since it would represent a significant disadvantage to the new franchises. While Harbhajan’s loyalties lie firmly with Mumbai, he does not think playing for Pune would be very different. “I play for the Mumbai Indians. Like Pune, even Mumbai is in Maharashtra. So there is not much difference,” he said.Harbhajan paid tribute to retiring Sri Lankan offspinner Muttiah Muralitharan, who tipped Harbhajan as the only bowler likely to challenge his Test wicket tally. “No one can touch Muralitharan’s record in Tests. It’s sweet of him to say that. But realistically, I’m nowhere near that. I have learnt so many things from him. We will surely miss him.”
