HBL and NBP set up final clash

A round-up of the semi-finals of the Faysal Bank One Day National Cup Division One

ESPNcricinfo staff06-Feb-2011Habib Bank Limited eased past Water and Power Development Authority at the Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore to seal their place in the tournament final. A collective bowling effort, four bowlers including Danish Kaneria, bagged two wickets each, while Imran Farhat and Taufeeq Umar, the openers, struck half-centuries to ensure a seven-wicket win. Sohaib Maqsood top-scored for WAPDA with 87 but was short of support from the other end; only one other batsman went past 20 as WAPDA were bowled out for 204. A 143-run opening stand between two players who’ve represented Pakistan shut out WAPDA from the game and HBL completed their win – their fourth in five games – with 34 balls to spare.A lower-order revival led by Sarmad Bhatti and an all-round effort from Mohammad Talha handed National Bank of Pakistan a 32-run win over Pakistan International Airlines at the Iqbal Stadium in Faisalabad. Bhatti rescued his team from a precarious situation at 79 for 5 and then 114 for 6, adding 70 with Talha followed by 64 with Uzair-ul-Haq to set the opponents a challenging target of 249. Bhatti top-scored for his team with 73, while Talha chipped in with a quickfire 49 that included three sixes. Uzair rattled PIA in their reply, picking up four wickets to reduce them to 95 for 6 at one stage. Shoaib Khan snr and Sarfraz Ahmed, though, helped the team recover with a 108-run stand but it proved unsustainable. Talha returned to bag two wickets as the innings closed on 216, sealing NBP’s place in the final.

ICC rejects plea for Eden Gardens extension

The ICC has rejected the BCCI request to reconsider its decision to move the Group B match between India and England from Kolkata

The Cricket Association of Bengal and the BCCI will now have to decide whether the Eden Gardens will be ready in time for the other three games it is supposed to host•AFP

The ICC has rejected the BCCI’s request to reconsider moving the Group B match between India and England from Kolkata. The BCCI has recommended that the match, initially scheduled to be held at the Eden Gardens on February 27, be shifted to Bangalore. The ICC has given the Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) 10 days to get Eden Gardens in shape for the other three World Cup matches that are scheduled to be held in Kolkata. On Thursday, the ICC, after many deliberations, ruled out Kolkata as a host venue after its inspection team deemed the stadium unfit and expressed strong concerns about various facilities in the ground being ready in time for the game. Following the decision, the CAB president, Jagmohan Dalmiya, sent a plea to the ICC through the BCCI asking for a ten-day extension to finish the remaining work. Dalmiya received support from Shashank Manohar, the BCCI president, who sent in a separate “forwarding letter” to ICC chief executive, Haroon Lorgat, echoing the CAB’s request. However, Lorgat said the ICC could not be swayed at the last minute and conveyed his message to Manohar in an email late Friday night. “I told him the ICC could not accommodate the request,” Lorgat told ESPNcricinfo. “There was too much of planning and too much of logistics that would be involved,”It is understood that the ICC refused to climb down from its original stance because, having spoken to its stadium and ground-preparation experts again, the consensus remained that there was no guarantee Eden Gardens would be ready for the February 27 game. The feeling at the ICC was that Dalmiya, having found himself in a tight corner, was acting out of desperation. They believed things could not be sorted out in ten days, especially since Dalmiya had conceded to the ICC’s inspection team on their January 25 visit that a further 20 days would be needed to get the ground ready. The status of the other three group matches scheduled to be hosted by Kolkata – Ireland v Holland, South Africa v Ireland and Zimbabwe v Kenya – remains unclear at the moment. The ICC has clarified that there will be no further inspections of the venue. It is for the BCCI and CAB to let them know if Kolkata can host those three matches.”The big commercial game was India v England. The other matches involve Associates, which cannot be big money spinners. It is now for the CAB to take a call and if they want to save the face, they could get the ground ready for the other three matches,” an official close to the negotiations said.Manohar, who had said on Friday that the ball was in the ICC’s court regarding the decision, told that the ICC was well within its rights to refuse the plea for reconsideration. “This is an ICC tournament and it has every right to decide on this,” he said. “We’ve tried our best for the CAB but the final word was always going to be the ICC’s.”

Kyle Walker could be fit to face Madrid

Pep Guardiola has delivered some early Manchester City team news involving Kyle Walker ahead of their upcoming Champions League semi-final clash against Real Madrid on Wednesday night.

The Lowdown: Injury concerns

The 31-year-old has been out of action for almost a month after sustaining a serious ankle injury in the quarter-finals against Atletico Madrid, and the City manager had even admitted that he was unsure whether his right-back would play again this season.

However, in a surprising update, the 52-year-old shared some positive news and confirmed that Walker has stepped up his rehabilitation; and as a result of the progress made, the right-back could have an outside chance of coming into contention for the game at the Bernabeu.

The Latest: Walker being monitored

Speaking during his pre-match press conference on Tuesday, Guardiola revealed that the 65-cap England international would be carefully monitored between now and kick-off.

He told the media: “Kyle trained today and he will travel. Tomorrow we will decide – he is three weeks without training but we are happy he is back. We will decide tomorrow.

“We will see with Kyle tomorrow how he is after treatment tonight and tomorrow. Then we will decide.”

The Verdict: A pivotal player

Whether or not Walker is named in the starting XI against Carlo Ancelotti’s outfit on Wednesday, knowing that he is nearing a return to action will come as a huge boost for Man City.

The £22.5m-rated star has been a regular starter under Guardiola this term and is a pivotal player in this City side, having made 30 appearances in all competitions, providing two assists in that time and averaging a pass success rate of 88.9%, as per WhoScored.

Once hailed as “one of the best” by ex-Watford striker Troy Deeney, the sooner that Walker is available for selection again the better, particularly with City having been short on defensive options in recent matches.

In other news… a Sky Sports pundit has claimed that there is ‘no way’ this Man City star will sign a new deal this summer

Amir optimistic ahead of hearing

Mohammad Amir, the youngest, most potent symbol of the trio expressed cautious optimism about the outcome of a hearing that could effectively end his career

Osman Samiuddin in Doha06-Jan-2011

Mohammad Amir: “I’ve been through some tough days. I’ve overcome them and I will hopefully overcome more in the future”•Associated Press

As the Doha hearing into the spot-fixing case against three Pakistani players finally got underway on Thursday, Mohammad Amir, the youngest, most potent symbol of the trio expressed cautious optimism about the outcome of a hearing that could effectively end his career.Along with Salman Butt and Mohammad Asif, Amir was charged by the ICC for allegedly bowling pre-planned deliberate no-balls in the Lord’s Test against England in August last year. The charges were the result of a sting operation by the English tabloid and the ICC acted immediately, suspending the three from international cricket. As time has passed, much attention has fallen on Amir, who until then had swiftly taken his place among the brightest, most charismatic young talents in the game; until the scandal emerged, Amir was favourite to win the ICC’s emerging player of the year award having just become the youngest bowler to complete 50 Test wickets. The last few months, including a failed appeal to lift his provisional suspension, have been difficult, however. His future, as he admitted, is now on the line. “Those early days were good for me and these last few months have been tough,” Amir told ESPNcricinfo before leaving for the hearing.”This is a question of my career and I’ve been through some tough days. I’ve overcome them and I will hopefully overcome more in the future. We’ve prepared well for the case and put in our effort.”Both Amir and his lawyer Shahid Karim remain confident that their preparations are complete. Much has been made of Amir’s youth and the ensuing leeway in any sanctions he may receive if found guilty because of that. Indications suggest that the defence may play on his unblemished disciplinary track record and his 18 years.”If you look at the ICC code there could be some advantage with that,” Karim said. “He is very important to the future of Pakistan and the response we have gotten from people so far, I am very hopeful. You can call our case strong or whatever but I am hopeful.”The players are staying in separate hotels with their lawyers and speculation has grown in recent weeks over the potential interplay between the three as the hearings begin. A leaked report of the testimony of Waqar Younis, the Pakistan coach, recently suggested that Amir’s no-ball was bowled at the behest of Butt, who was captain at the time. The suggestion that he acted under duress might gain importance in Amir’s defence, though it is understood that so far, the issue has not cropped up. Karim was understandably unwilling to expand.”I cannot say much about this right now but we will see in the case how we use that. There are many perspectives which we feel are our in our favour and we will use that to our advantage.”Amir was the first to arrive at the Qatar Financial Centre civil and commercial courts, well before the scheduled 9.30am start. He was followed by Asif and his lawyer Alex Cameron though in keeping with Asif’s approach throughout, they didn’t speak to the media.Apart from a couple of media appearances unrelated to the case, Asif has maintained a steady silence, possibly at the behest of advice from his British-based defence. He was the only one of the three who didn’t appeal against the provisional suspension. Butt was the last to arrive with his legal team and though he has been the most voluble in his defence over the last few months, he also refused to speak. The members of the independent tribunal, headed by Michael Beloff QC, were the first to arrive. “I cannot comment very much on it because we haven’t even started the hearings,” Sharad Rao, one of the members, said. Asked about the impact of the hearing on the future of the game, he said, “The future of cricket is good because that is what the whole exercise is about, so that it should be very clean game that we can rely on the results.”

Fast bowler Wasim Khan’s 23rd five-wicket haul and Umar Amin’s unbeaten hundred ensured National Bank of Pakistan completely dominated the second day against Rawalpindi at the Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium. Beginning on a precarious 59 for 5, Rawalpindi needed another 117 runs to take the first-innings lead. Zahid Mansoor took them past 100 but Wasim had him caught behind for 32. The lower order collapsed and Rawalpindi were dismissed for 118, Wasim finishing with 6 for 42. National Bank were in some trouble at 127 for 4, but Amin and Kamran Akmal added 109 in quick time to take them to 236 for 4 and an overall lead of 293. Amin hit only three fours in his unbeaten 119 but still scored at a strike rate of nearly 75 while Akmal hammered six fours in his unbeaten 58 off 70 deliveries.Karachi Blues took control on the second day at the United Bank Limited Sports Complex, bowling out Sui Northern Gas Pipelines Limited for 138 and then reaching 54 for the loss of opener Naved Khan. Karachi’s new-ball pair of Adeel Malik and Babar Rehman took four wickets apiece to help their side take a healthy first-innings lead of 77. SNGPL were tottering at 55 for 7 at one stage but Usman Arshad’s unbeaten 43 took them past 100. Karachi lost Naved in the first over but Rameez Raja and Fazal Subhan batted positively in their unbeaten 54-run stand. Only 62 overs were bowled in the day.Khaqan Arsal’s unbeaten century helped Habib Bank Limited extend their advantage on the second day against Multan at the Multan Cricket Stadium. On a day when only 53 overs were possible, Habib Bank scored 231 runs for the loss of three wickets to reach 429 for 7. Arsal added 160 runs for the sixth wicket with wicketkeeper Farhan Iqbal after Kamran Hussain fell cheaply. After Farhan was dismissed for 63, Arsal carried on with the tail to give his side a lead of 289 at stumps. He hit 15 fours in his unbeaten 156 that came in 196 deliveries.Half-centuries from Mohammad Ayub and captain Mansoor Amjad lifted Sialkot from the depths of 24 for 5, but Amjad’s late dismissal left them 135 runs short of Zarai Taraqiati Bank Limited’s 350 at the Jinnah Stadium. ZTBL’s left-arm medium-pacers Sohail Tanvir and Mohammad Khalil had run through the Sialkot top and middle order to leave them reeling at 24 for 5. Ayub and Amjad then revived the innings, almost batting till stumps in a 191-run partnership, but Amjad was bowled by left-arm spinner Raza Hasan for 89. Ayub remained unbeaten on 88 with 14 fours. The ZTBL lower order had earlier added 62 runs to the overnight score to take their side to a strong 350.Water and Power Development Authority and Faisalabad were entrenched in a duel of attrition for the first-innings lead at the Sports Stadium in Sargodha. WAPDA crawled to 226 for 6 and were still 47 runs adrift of Faisalabad’s 273 at stumps. All WAPDA batsmen except Ali Azmat got starts but none went past 50. Hasan Adnan made a sedate half-century but offspinner Hasan Mahmood took three wickets to leave WAPDA struggling at 186 for 5. Ahmed Said and captain Naved-ul-Hasan looked to be in control but Naved was caught behind off what proved to be the last ball of the day.In another fight for the first-innings lead, Pakistan International Airlines were 42 runs short of Islamabad’s 241 with three wickets remaining at the Diamond Club Ground. Nasrullah Khan took 4 for 56 as PIA lost wickets regularly, except when captain Kamran Sajid and Shoaib Khan shared a 93-run fifth-wicket partnership. Both batsmen hit eight fours each but could not carry on for long after reaching their half-centuries. Islamabad had earlier added 11 runs to their overnight score before being dismissed for 241. Three PIA bowlers finished with three wickets each. Only 71 overs were possible in the day.
