Pakistan women have professional approach, says captain

Sana Mir, the Pakistan women’s cricket team captain, has said women’s cricket in Pakistan has developed significantly since the PCB handed contracts to 19 women cricketers

Sana Mir, the Pakistan women’s cricket team captain, has said women’s cricket in Pakistan has developed significantly since the PCB handed contracts to 19 women cricketers. Pakistan recently finished as runners-up in the ICC Women’s World Cup Qualifier in Bangladesh and will take part in the Women’s World Twenty20 next year and the Women’s 50-over World Cup in 2013.”Our approach to the game is entirely professional now,” Mir, who was Pakistan’s second-highest run-scorer during the qualifiers and also took four wickets, told ESPNcricinfo. “It is not just a game but a profession we have chosen to earn a livelihood from.”The Pakistan women’s team only emerged in 1997 and it took them almost four years to register their first win, in a home ODI against Netherlands in 2001. They had to wait till 2004 to beat a top-flight team but victories have become more frequent in the last two years. Earlier this year the PCB offered the players central contracts, after they won the gold medal in the Asian Games in 2010. Mir, who is on a Grade A contract, said women’s cricket is now headed in the right direction.”We have been struggling in many areas but in the last couple of years things have improved significantly. Cricket is very old in our region but among women it is not that popular; it has gained popularity among girls only in the last six-seven years.”But we are heading in the right direction. Technically, we have to do a lot to break into the top three teams but we have gained a lot of ground. We have to work on our bench strength. We have to introduce the game at the grass-root level. In Pakistan there are only a few cricket clubs for women; the number of them has to increase to three figures. We still have nearly 50 girls as backup for the national squad.”Mir was conservative in setting goals for the upcoming World Cups, saying winning was more of a fantasy than an achievable goal. “We have been in the World Twenty20 before and lost our way in the opening round, so this time our target is to at least get through to the second round. As far as the 50-over World Cup is concerned, we have better chances and are targeting at least the semi-finals.”Pakistan have risen to sixth in the women’s ODI rankings this year but Mir said they were still some way off competing with the top teams. “We are still far off from being the best as they are many areas in which we lag behind. The most important things we need to work on are fitness, endurance and mental strength. We need to play more and more quality cricket against better teams to flourish. We are at No. 6 now and our first priority is to hold this spot and not slip back down.”

Super receptivo e humilde. Começamos a conversar e acabamos tocando no assunto do jogo do dia.

– No momento do gol do Mina eu estava do lado dele.

Nós estávamos ali no plano do jogo, bem embaixo.

Gayle and Narine star in big wins

A round-up of the action from the fourth day of play at the Regional Super50 2011-12

Chris Gayle bulldozed Combined Campuses and Colleges to the tune of 147 runs – 22 more than they managed in their chase of 260 – to propel Jamaica to the top of Group B. CCC inserted Jamaica after winning the toss at Georgetown and were consigned to a leather-hunt almost immediately. Gayle unleashed his fury in full force after a near three-hour delay reduced the game to 37 overs a side. He belted 11 fours and eight sixes in his 110-ball effort before falling to Jason Dawes off the penultimate ball of the innings. It was small consolation for Dawes, whose nine overs were looted for 104 runs. Xavier Marshall backed up Gayle with a half-century to set CCC a steep target. Incisive opening spells from Krishmar Santokie and Andre Russell reduced CCC to 10 for 3. Thereafter, the chase meandered meaninglessly into an exercise in crease-occupation as CCC finished with 125 for 5 in 37 overs.Trinidad & Tobago’s unconventional spin-twins – Samuel Badree and Sunil Narine – picked up a combined 10 for 82 in 23.3 overs to set up a five-wicket win against Leeward Islands at Providence Stadium, Guyana. Narine finished with 6 for 48, as Leeward stumbled listlessly to be bowled out for 94 in the 26th over, with only three batsmen making it to double figures. Anthony Martin then responded with a four-wicket haul in decidedly spinner-friendly conditions, but Kieron Pollard’s unbeaten 34 took T&T home in under 15 overs, sealing them the two bonus points for scoring at better than run-a-ball.

Waqar praises bowlers for creating pressure

Waqar Younis, the Pakistan coach, praised his bowlers for not giving the Zimbabwe batsmen a chance to settle, thereby triggering a batting collapse

Waqar Younis thinks Aizaz Cheema has a bright future at the international level•Associated Press

The Pakistan team have made no secret of their desire to visit Victoria Falls during their tour of Zimbabwe. They have also mentioned that they are unsure when they would be able to fit the six-hour road journey from Bulawayo into their tight schedule.Had they obliterated Zimbabwe’s lower order in the same way as they the top and middle orders, and knocked off the small target they would have been set, Pakistan could have used Monday for sightseeing. Instead, they will return to Queens Sports Club facing a deficit of 81 runs and with two Zimbabwe wickets still to dislodge.”We got a little bit frustrated in the middle session and gave away a few too many runs,” Waqar Younis, the Pakistan coach said. “But, the game is still very much in our favour at the moment. We have to come back and make sure they don’t get too many more and try to get those runs as soon as possible.”Pakistan have not won consecutive Tests since 2005 but look likely to record a second successive win, having beaten the West Indies in their last Test in May. They showed their intent in taking control of the match in the first session, when they scored 103 runs at a slightly higher rate than they had managed throughout the third day. Younis Khan was more purposeful in his strokeplay and Adnan Akmal was enterprising in making 36 off 45 balls. “We knew that if we got a decent lead, we would have a fair chance of getting them out cheaply,” Waqar said. Saeed Ajmal contributed 28 but the lower order was skittled quickly after lunch, resulting in a lead of only 54 runs. However, Pakistan made that slim advantage count and snaffled five second innings wickets before Zimbabwe had wiped out their lead. “I think it was the pressure we put on them,” Waqar said. “The bowlers bowled really well and we didn’t give them a chance to get settled and so a lot of them played rash shots.”The bulk of that pressure was created by Saeed Ajmal and Mohammad Hafeez, but Waqar added that the role of Akmal, the wicketkeeper, should not be ignored. “In the first innings he wasn’t really up to the mark, but in the second innings he knew what he needed to do and he kept really well,” Waqar said.Despite Pakistan’s success in the field today, there has been some concern over the course of the match about their inexperienced fast bowlers. “It was difficult to come into the Test match, with only one Test between the three [Aizaz Cheema, Sohail Khan and Junaid Khan] and with none of them having taken a wicket in Tests,” Waqar said. “Aizaz Cheema really bowled with some fire and aggression, he was pretty good and you can see that he has some future for Pakistan.”The two Khans, Junaid and Sohail received less praise from the coach, who indicated that they some way to go before they will able to challenge the likes of Umar Gul and Wahab Riaz for regular spots in the team. “Junaid has been part of the team for the last eight months. He also played for Lancashire and he did well there but is on a learning curve. He is good one day bowler but he still a lot to learn when it comes to the longer version. “Sohail Khan has got to work on his fitness.”Despite his criticisms of Sohail and Junaid, Waqar said he had “no regrets” about leaving out Sohail Tanvir, the left-arm fast bowler, saying he thought the three bowlers who played had “done a wonderful job”.However, Waqar will not be around to help with the development of the trio because this is his last series as coach. He announced before the tour of Zimbabwe that he would be stepping down for personal reasons after 18 months as coach and said he was pleased with the way his tenure had panned out. “It has been very satisfying. We’ve beaten New Zealand in New Zealand, West Indies in West Indies and we drew against South Africa in the United Arab Emirates. We’ve got a young team, who have played fairly well, so overall I am happy with the progress they have made.”While his future plans are not immediately clear, Waqar hopes to remain in cricket, probably as a commentator.

OLHO VIVO NO MERCADO EXTERNO

Jennings and Vettori bet big on freshness

Their key players may be coming off lengthy lay-offs, but the Royal Challengers Bangalore think-tank believes that won’t affect their Champions League campaign

AB de Villiers and Daniel Vettori haven’t been in action since the IPL•AFP

Their key players may be coming off lengthy lay-offs, but the Royal Challengers Bangalore think-tank believes that won’t affect their Champions League campaign. Their captain Daniel Vettori, like talismanic opener Chris Gayle and South Africa import AB de Villiers, has not played any competitive cricket since the IPL ended in late May, but Vettori and coach Ray Jennings reckon the freshness can work in the team’s favour.”Too much cricket could put you in a bad state of mind, and that’s a big issue for me as the coach,” Jennings said in Bangalore. “Players never lose their talent. The fact that these guys are coming in fresh could be a blessing in disguise. Freshness is a very funny thing – if you are fresh in the mind, you could be fresh in expressing talent.”Vettori also stressed on the freshness aspect, insisting his four-month off-season – time he spent “looking after the kids” – could work in his favour going into the tournament. “Sometimes freshness of mind is the best thing coming into a tournament like this. Myself, AB and Chris haven’t played in a long time and are actually excited about playing cricket again. And you will see that intensity going into the first game.”The Bangalore players assembled from various parts of the world on September 18, and have their first full practice session only four days before their first game. Jennings underplayed the impact of the quick turnaround, and the potential disadvantage faced by his side compared to teams from other countries that have the luxury of spending most of the year together.”On the day, the team that connects better with the game technically and mentally will win in this format,” Jennings said. “There is a very good culture and unity in the team, everyone enjoys each other’s company. The local sides from other countries have certain problems – they don’t have a blend of different ideas [from around the world] like we do. Some of our guys have played in Indian conditions a lot more than the other sides.”Bangalore’s campaign has already suffered a huge blow, with pace spearhead Zaheer Khan missing the tournament due to the injury he picked up on India’s tour of England. Zaheer was one of many players to break down in England, a tour that brought cramped cricket schedules under scrutiny once again.”That is a problem, especially in Indian cricket,” Jennings said. “Unfortunately the pressure on India players is a lot more than others, especially fast bowlers like Zaheer. There’s not much we can do about it, we have given Virat Kohli [who joins the Bangalore team straight after the ODI series in England] some time off. The last thing I want to do is bring him to a net session to sharpen him up, since he has played so much. I need him to rest, get away from the cricket and come back fresh after 3-4 days. I am sure he will be ready for the game on Friday.”Bangalore are set to become the only side to feature in each of the first three editions of the Champions League, but they have no silverware to show for their efforts so far. Even in the IPL, they have made two finals and one semi-final without managing to go all the way. They will hope to change all that in this tournament. Bangalore begin their campaign with a match against Warriors on September 23.
