Rasool stars in J&K's first win

Uthappa finds form as Saurashtra secure lead to top group standings

ESPNcricinfo staff12-Nov-2017An inspired bowling performance by Aamir Aziz, the left-arm spinner, helped Jammu & Kashmir register their first win of the 2017-18 season in Jamshedpur. However, it was certain that both J&K and Jharkhand were out of contention for a quarter-final berth with one game to play.Aziz picked up five second-innings wickets to take his match tally to 9 for 149 as Jharkhand, who began briskly in a steep final-day chase of 350, were bowled out for 243 in 49.4 overs. The openers Ishan Kishan (52) and Mohammad Nazim Siddique (38) added 87 in 11.5 overs to give their chase a fillip. Utkarsh Singh, at No. 3, made a solid 47 to further strengthen their prospects of a second win, but the middle order imploded.Shahbaz Nadeem reduced the margin of victory by making 53, but that was scant consolation. Parvez Rasool, the J&K captain, who top scored with 70 in the second innings to help stretch the lead past 300, finished with 5 for 99, his 12th five-for in first-class cricket. Earlier in the day, J&K added 19 to their overnight 246 for 7 before declaring their second innings in the first session to set up the possibility of their outright win, which they achieved in the second session.Saurashtra continued to remain to top of the Group C standings as they walked away with the first-innings honours against defending champions Gujarat in Rajkot. The top two – Gujarat are currently second – in the points table continued to remain as they were, but the race for the quarter-finals intensified, with Kerala, two points adrift of Gujarat, also in the fight.Gujarat, who rode Priyank Panchal’s 145 to make a pitch for a lead, were bowled out for the addition of 110 to their overnight 303 for 4, conceding a lead of 157. Once the first-innings honours were decided, the game went into snooze mode with Saurashtra opting for batting practice. Robin Uthappa’s return to form was a big positive. The Karnataka opener, who joined them prior to this season as a professional, struck his first half-century of the season, and was unbeaten on 64. Saurashtra had posted 98 for 1 when players shook hands.

Have to find 'hatred' of England in the Ashes – Warner

The opening batsman said “there will definitely be some words exchanged” come the start of the first Ashes Test in Brisbane

ESPNcricinfo staff15-Oct-2017David Warner won’t have any qualms about engaging with England players in the middle during the Ashes, believing his verbal sparring performed a key role in the 2013-14 whitewash. No sooner had he returned from the limited-overs tour of India, Warner was thinking of the opening day at the Gabba as he talked of the need to find “hatred” of England in the heat of the Ashes tussle.Warner, lauded in recent years for a more mature approach to his game, wasn’t afraid of having a few words four years ago which included saying England had “scared eyes” during the Brisbane Test as they were dismantled by Mitchell Johnson although later admitted he had gone “too far” when he labelled Jonathan Trott’s second-innings dismissal as “poor and weak.””As soon as you step on that line it’s war,” Warner said on . “You try and get into a battle as quick as you can. I try and look in the opposition’s eye and try and work out ‘how can I dislike this player, how can I get on top of him?’ You’ve really got to find that spark in yourself to really take it to the opposition.”You have to delve and dig deep into yourself to actually get some hatred about them to actually get up when you’re out there. History is a big part in this and that is what carries us onto the ground.”Warner added, however, that he would leave the talk until he gets onto the field in Brisbane even suggesting he will take a “subtle” approach in trying to get under England’s skin.”Four years ago, during that first Test I made some statements in the media and at the time I thought it was a great thing to come out and speak what I said,” he said. “I have no regrets about that and I think that could have played a little bit of a role in the back of their minds.”At the moment I’m not going to put any vibes out there or get into a verbal stoush … but come day one when we walk out there, there will definitely be some words exchanged. But I think the subtle approach these days is how it is and how it goes.”Australia’s players have three rounds of Sheffield Shield matches to prepare for the first Test with the major question marks over their side revolving around who will bat at No. 6 and who will take the wicketkeeping gloves.England, who are set to be without Ben Stokes, depart at the end of the month and have three warm-up matches before the first Test which starts on November 23.

Arsenal: Arteta Could Lose "Special" Star This Summer

Champions League finalists Inter Milan are "fighting off" transfer rivals Monaco to secure the signing of Arsenal striker Folarin Balogun.

Who is leaving Arsenal?

Gunners transfer chief Edu Gaspar has done wonders to back Mikel Arteta with a few huge signings, namely Kai Havertz, defender Jurrien Timber and club-record signing Declan Rice for over £200 million.

Brentford goalkeeper David Raya is also on his way to Arsenal, with the club now sealing an alternative to current number one Aaron Ramsdale.

After this serious spending spree, the north Londoners will need to continue balancing their books with more player sales. So far, Ainsley Maitland-Niles, Auston Trusty, Pablo Mari, Matt Turner and long-serving midfielder Granit Xhaka come as the most notable departures.

Albert Sami Lokonga, who spent part of last season on loan at Crystal Palace, has also been heavily linked with an exit as league newcomers Burnley attempt to sign him on a temporary deal.

Nicolas Pepe is being chased by Turkish Super Lig sides Besikta and Fenerbache, while Balogun could come as, arguably, Arsenal's most high profile exit of the window.

Balogun enjoyed a prolific spell on loan at Reims last season, which may have significantly raised his stock as some reports suggest Arsenal won't sell for less than £50m.

Inter and Monaco have both been linked with moves for the USA international as they hope to add attacking flair before the window shuts.

CBS journalist Matteo Bonetti, taking to X recently, says Inter are determined to sign Balogun and are "fighting off" Monaco for his services.

Simone Inzaghi's side believe they have a trump card in the race, as they can offer him Champions League football next season.

"Inter are fighting off Monaco to secure the signing of the American striker Folarin Balogun," said Bonetti.

"The big difference being that Inter can offer him Champions League football. The 22 year old exploded last season with Reims in Ligue 1, where he scored 21 league goals."

How good is Folarin Balogun?

Folarin Balogun

Barring his 21 goals in the French top flight last season, Balogun has been praised by Gunners boss Arteta for his quality and attitude behind-the-scenes.

Commenting on the "special" striker's loan spell at Reims last season, it's safe to say Arteta was very impressed with his efforts across the channel.

“I’m so happy for him,” Arteta said.

“He’s a boy that has a really clear idea of what he wants to do with his career. He’s really ambitious, really committed and really brave.

“We discussed a lot before he made that move whether it was the right place to go and the other choices he had. He was so convinced. I’m really happy for him because he deserves what he’s getting.

“When you look at the numbers and what he is doing, it’s just incredible. It’s very rare to see that. But he’s got something special, that’s why we decided to give him a long-term contract and have faith in him and give him the long period that he needs now, because the loan he is having now is really different to the one he had before at Middlesbrough."

Tottenham Could Sign £50m "Handful" As Barnes Alternative

Tottenham Hotspur have been linked to a whole host of top talents this window, but they could be set to take the biggest gamble of them all in order to secure a sparkling future…

Is Brennan Johnson staying at Nottingham Forest?

Whilst their pursuit of Harvey Barnes was well-documented, with the Lilywhites even reportedly submitting a joint bid for both him and James Maddison, in the end it was only the latter who ended up joining the north London outfit.

Ange Postecoglou was forced to miss out on the wide man, who instead joined Newcastle United in a move totalling £39m. This marked a hefty sum for the 25-year-old, but one Spurs could blow out the water should alternative reports be true.

Whilst it was only suggested late last month, those at N17 likely remain interested in signing Brennan Johnson from Nottingham Forest, even if the Tricky Trees value him at an astronomical £50m fee.

Read the latest Tottenham transfer news HERE…

Although far less experienced at the top level than their earlier target, his ceiling remains so high, whilst he boasts all the physical assets to be a real star for Spurs.

How many goals has Brennan Johnson scored for Nottingham Forest?

As the Garibaldi geared up for their first top-flight campaign since 1998, many likely assumed they would struggle despite their vast incomings.

They spent over £168m and brought in 29 players across both the summer and winter windows last year, and yet somehow Steve Cooper managed to forge a functioning team out of all the egos to keep them in the division.

However, arguably the most impressive feat throughout it all was that young Johnson retained his starting spot, despite players like Emmanuel Dennis, Andre Ayew, Taiwo Awoyini and Morgan Gibbs-White all joining in positions similar to his.

In fact, the 22-year-old featured in every single one of their league games, scoring eight and assisting a further three as a second striker or off the right flank. This brought his tally for the club up to 29, having assisted 12.

This marked an outstanding return given the turmoil that surrounded the club throughout the campaign, which journalist Antonio Mango had expected, praising him the year prior as a "real handful".

harvey-barnes

Whilst these were figures surpassed by Barnes, who instead scored 13 and assisted only once in the league, he has spent far longer in the top flight than his potential alternative. Also, it is perhaps worth mentioning that the 25-year-old did still succumb to the drop, with his goals not enough to save his side.

Conversely, Johnson arguably fired his team to safety, with his brace against Everton and Leicester City, and the only goal in their win over Leeds United seeing them take valuable points from relegation rivals.

Despite that, FBref still references the former Foxes star on the Wales international's 'similar players' list, to emphasise their similarities. The fact that they recorded a 15% and 18% goal conversion rate respectively helps to further outline their shared clinical nature from the flank too.

Already clearly a big-game player despite his youth, and with a vital year of experience at the elite level under his belt, perhaps now is the perfect time for Postecoglou to take him under his wing and mould him in his image.

Kohli credits Bumrah, spinners for series sweep

India’s captain was also pleased with his batsmen and said the next step was to introduce some flexibility

Andrew Fidel Fernando in Colombo04-Sep-20173:25

Dasgupta: Kohli has been able to dissect, rebuild his game

The spinners are skilful, Jasprit Bumrah is improving, and the batting order is ready to move away from formula: these were Virat Kohli’s gleanings from the 5-0 clobbering his team handed out to Sri Lanka.India were tested only once through the series – when Akila Dhananjaya took six wickets in the second match. Otherwise, the contest was incredibly one sided. Four of the top six scorers in the series were India players, Kohli himself leading the charge with 330 runs at an average of 110.Tharanga laments Sri Lanka’s ‘worrying’ batting

As had been the case in the Tests, it was not merely the fact that Sri Lanka were whitewashed that stung, but the fact that they were so categorically outplayed. While there were stretches of decent bowling through the series, Sri Lanka did not muster a single satisfactory score. It is mostly the batting that Upul Tharanga lamented at the end of the series.
“Even after five games we failed to post 250 runs even once, and I’m very disappointed with that,” Tharanga said. “It’s worrying. Even today we could have made about 270 or 275. We were well placed. But like in the last few games we collapsed. We lost some seven wickets for 53 runs. That has been something that is happening frequently now. We have a month’s break before the next ODIs and we need to rectify the mistakes and move forward. In ODIs, if you fail even in one department it is very difficult to compete.”
Where India had 11 50-plus scores through the series – including five centuries – Sri Lanka managed only six half centuries. “In ODIs, one of the top four batters need to make a century then only we can go to get something like 280 or 300,” Tharanga said. “Most of our players have played less than 30 matches, so they didn’t have the experience. No one managed to get a big score.”

More tellingly, seven of the top eight names on the wicket-takers’ list also belonged to India bowlers. Bumrah was the most penetrative bower, taking 15 wickets – six clear of the next best – at an average of 11.26. He had taken career-best figures of 5 for 27 in the third ODI in Pallekele, and claimed the Player-of-the-Series prize for those efforts.”Jasprit has been our most effective short-format bowler in the last 18 months,” Kohli said. “He has really worked on his bowling a lot – especially his length ball, which has picked up more pace. That’s very heartening to see because it never lets the batsmen get settled. It’s not only about yorkers and slower balls any more. He can bowl a good length ball and nick you off as well, which I think is the biggest improvement in his bowling. Credit to him for shaping his game in that way. Getting a Man-of-the Series award in the subcontinent as a fast bowler – it’s always a great thing to achieve.”Though Dhananjaya took nine wicket on his own, India’s spinners, too, comfortably outperformed Sri Lanka’s as a group. Of those, left-arm spinner Axar Patel took six wickets at an average of 25.66 and maintained an economy rate of 3.85. As with Bumrah, Axar is another bowler who does not allow opposition batsmen to settle, Kohli said.”Axar, being a conventional spinner, varied his pace and I think it was outstanding,” he said. “He didn’t let the batsmen get on top of him. That’s a remarkable thing – when you don’t have any variation in your bowling and you still don’t let guys score. I think it’s the height that really helps him getting that extra bounce and the extra pace he can generate. He’s got a very strong shoulder and people find it difficult to sweep him.”Axar Patel claimed six wickets at an average of 25.66 and maintained an economy rate of 3.85•Lakruwan Wanniarachchi/ AFPNot that the wristspinners did poorly either. Legspinner Yuzvendra Chahal took five wickets in four matches, but left-arm wristspinner Kuldeep Yadav was perhaps a little more impressive in his two outings, taking three wickets at an average of 23.66.”Kuldeep and Chahal beinig wristspinners will always keep you in the game,” Kohli said. “I certainly felt that all three of them were pretty spot on with attacking all the time. It really helped us get those crucial wickets in the middle overs, and at the same time, helped us control the run rate as well. You might see changes in the bowling attack every now and then but these guys have grabbed the opportunity really well.”The batting, meanwhile, seemed to be purring, thanks in no small part to Kohli and the openers Rohit Sharma and Shikhar Dhawan, who between them shared five centuries in the series. India did attempt some middle-order experiments playing Kedar Jadhav, Manish Pandey and KL Rahul in the series – Jadhav and Pandey hitting one fifty apiece. Kohli said that now there was consistency in the top order, the next step was to introduce a little flexibility and X-factor.”Once we start playing like this and get more confident with the roles that we’re given, then we can be more unpredictable,” Kohli said. “With the kind of talent that we have in the side if we can be unpredictable as well, then it becomes a lethal combination. Teams will find it difficult to set a pattern against us and we’ll always stay ahead of the game or at least try to. More often then not we’ll end up executing those things.”India have now won all eight internationals on this tour. One more game remains – the T20I on Wednesday.

Mashrafe urges senior quartet to step up in Australia Tests

The senior bowler said Tamim Iqbal, Mushfiqur Rahim, Shakib Al Hasan and Mahmudullah will have to lead the way against the first Australian Test side to visit Bangladesh in 11 years

Mohammad Isam14-Aug-2017The role of Bangladesh’s most-experienced Test quartet will be vital to their chances of success against Australia. Mashrafe Mortaza, former Test and current ODI captain, who was part of a training camp in Dhaka over the last five weeks, believes Tamim Iqbal, Mushfiqur Rahim, Shakib Al Hasan and Mahmudullah will have to lead the way against the first Australian Test side to visit Bangladesh in 11 years.”I expect our four senior players to put a price on their wicket,” Mashrafe told ESPNcricinfo. “They must put up a statement in the middle that the young players can follow. Tamim is in the best form of his career. He and Imrul can provide a good start. We have Shakib and [Mehidy Hasan] in our spin department. If one of the fast bowlers have a good spell of three or four wickets, there will be a possibility for us. These will be expected when the situation arises in the match.”Mashrafe said that Bangladesh’s improved mindset has put them in a position of strength ahead of the Test series. The confidence, he believes, has soared after they convincingly beat England and Sri Lanka in the last ten months. Although the losses in Christchurch [against New Zealand], Hyderabad [against India] and Galle [against Sri Lanka] were largely due to poor performances their valiance in the Chittagong [against England] and Wellington defeats didn’t go unnoticed.”More important than winning or losing is their mentality. I am witnessing in the dressing room that their mindset is setting them apart from previous teams, and they are in the making of bigger things in the next two years.”It is encouraging enough to think that they will fight, which is a better expectation than only hoping for a result. This has also been their best preparation ahead of any Test series,” he said.Mashrafe said that the batsmen have to continue to be hungry and not be complacent with a milestone but go on to make a bigger score each time they are settled at the crease.”I think they have been working on their mentality, which has been an area of concern for the last 15 years. We never had the patience. After scoring a century, a batsman has to think of coming back the next day and converting it into a big score. Why not a double-hundred? It doesn’t happen every day but utilising an opportunity properly is vital.”Say someone scored a double-hundred but the others haven’t contributed as much. The team score comes to 400-450, so it becomes important for the set batsman to make it count. Someone who gets out in the forties has to think of playing a long innings, not just be happy with a fifty,” said Mashrafe.Mashrafe believes Bangladesh will have to raise their game against Australia more than what they did against England at home last year. He said that tackling Australia’s bowling attack, even without Mitchell Starc, will be critical to doing well in the two Tests.”I don’t want to create unnecessary pressure on the players but I am expecting a good Test series,” he said. “Australia is the most passionate Test team in the world and their best possible team is coming to Bangladesh. They have Cummins, Hazlewood and Lyon in the bowling line-up.”The work for our team isn’t going to be easy but if we play one level better than what we did against England, it would be possible to win, but I am not going to put any pressure on them in terms of results.”

Leicester City: Maresca "confident" of keeping £65k-p/w star

Leicester City boss Enzo Maresca is 'confident' he can keep hold of Belgium international Timothy Castagne this summer despite interest in his services from elsewhere, according to journalist Ben Jacobs.

Is Timothy Castagne leaving Leicester City?

According to Tutto Juve, Castagne would like to return to Italy this summer and join Juventus amid uncertainty over his future at the King Power Stadium, which has also alerted Fulham and several other Premier League clubs.

The 27-year-old is believed not to be phased by Juventus being banned from competing in the Europa Conference League and his signature is viewed as a 'concrete goal' for the Old Lady as they aim to bolster their options in the full-back areas.

Alongside Fulham, Crystal Palace and Bournemouth are also interested in offering Castagne a return to the English top-flight; however, it is expected that Leicester City will hold out for a 'substantial fee' before allowing the £65k-a-week ace to depart, as per The Evening Standard.

Belgian journalist Sacha Tavolieri claimed earlier in the window that Arsenal were also keen to add Castagne to the ranks and had started talks with Leicester City over a potential transfer in the event they couldn't convince their preferred target, Real Sociedad right-back Ivan Fresneda, to move to the Emirates in the off-season.

Last campaign, Castagne made 42 appearances across all competitions for Leicester City, registering two goals and four assists, as per Transfermarkt.

Speaking to GIVEMESPORT, journalist Jacobs thinks that Leicester City boss Maresca will be keen to keep hold of Castagne alongside his teammates Wilfried Ndidi and Kelechi Iheanacho, who have also been linked with an exit from their current employers in recent times.

Jacobs stated: "They'd like to keep hold of Kelechi Iheanacho and Timothy Castagne, even though there's Premier League interest.

"If they do keep those kind of players, the first team squad will be relatively experienced and it will give them a real opportunity of coming back up.

"That's why I think if Enzo Maresca is confident of keeping that spine – and Wilfried Ndidi counts, and again, there's interest in him as you'd expect – then he can really build for the future because he's got enough now in his squad to help Leicester get back up, as long as he doesn't lose too many between now and the end of the transfer window."

What now for Leicester City?

Leicester City manager Maresca will be hoping to add some extra depth to his squad this summer to follow the additions of Conor Coady, Harry Winks, Mads Hermansen and Callum Doyle, as per Transfermarkt.

According to Football Insider, newly-relegated trio Leicester City, Leeds United and Southampton are all in competition to sign Swansea City striker Joel Piroe.

Former Aston Villa youngster Arjan Raikhy is in talks over a move to the King Power Stadium and could join the Foxes as a free agent to help their promotion push, as per The Daily Mail.

Montpellier attacker Stephy Mavididi has signed a five-year contract at Leicester City and is set to be announced imminently after undergoing a medical at the club, as per Football Insider.

Tottenham Could Land Modric Heir In £34m Maestro

It looks set to be a hectic few weeks with regard to outgoings at Tottenham Hotspur, with there seemingly a handful of notable figures who could be set for pastures new as part of Ange Postecoglou's summer overhaul.

Aside from the potential sale of talisman, Harry Kane, the Lilywhites have only recently accepted a bid from Spartak Moscow for Davinson Sanchez, while long-serving skipper Hugo Lloris is also set to be on his way after 11 years at the club.

The veteran Frenchman could well be joined out the door by Danish midfielder, Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, with the 27-year-old seemingly set to join Atletico Madrid sooner rather than later, having spent the past three seasons at N17.

With Postecoglou likely keen to replace the former Southampton man, the Daily Mail only recently revealed that Chelsea's Conor Gallagher and Aston Villa's Douglas Luiz are being considered as potential options – as too is Celta Vigo sensation, Gabri Veiga.

Who is Gabri Veiga?

The promising Spaniard has caught the eye following a breakout season in La Liga last time out, with the likes of Chelsea, Real Madrid and Barcelona all said to be in the queue for his signature, alongside Spurs.

With a reported buyout clause of around £34m, the 21-year-old could represent a relatively affordable option as far as Daniel Levy is concerned, with the Tottenham chairman potentially able to secure a player of "unique" talent, according to former manager, Carlos Carvalhal.

Gabri Veiga

Having scored 11 goals and chipped in with four assists last term the Spain U21 international has certainly put himself on the map, with only Kane and Heung-min Son having registered more goal involvements for the north Londoners last season.

Noted for his "box-to-box" style by talent scout Jacek Kulig, the youngster could potentially emerge as a dream successor to Luka Modric at Spurs, with the diminutive Croatian having previously dazzled in his central midfield berth during his four-year stint at White Hart Lane.

How good was Luke Modric at Tottenham?

While the now-veteran dynamo has gone on to taste Champions League and Ballon d'Or glory since departing the Lilywhites back in 2012, it was in England that he truly announced his talent to the wider world.

Much like Veiga, the 5 foot 8 maestro was also something of an all-action asset in the centre of the park during his time in the Premier League, with former boss Harry Redknapp having notably stated back in 2009:

"He heads the ball, tackles and has got strong legs. He's a powerful little lad. He's got a great heart and is a great all-round player."

Real Madrid midfielder Luka Modric.

While perhaps a less attack-minded asset than Veiga, the one-time Dinamo Zagreb man did still chip in with a respectable haul of 42 goals and assists in 160 games in all competitions for Spurs, showcasing his ability to make a telling impact in the final third.

The duo are also alike due to their ability to simply glide forward with the ball at their feet, with the ageing Modric still ranking in the top 17% among those in his position in Europe's top five leagues for progressive carries, while Veiga ranks in the top 12% in that regard.

For the latter man to be able to reach the same heights as the current Real Madrid star would be a tough ask, yet Carvahal has given insight into the Spaniard's lofty potential, having tipped him to become "an extra special player" in future.

While there may be rival clubs sniffing around, north London could prove to be the perfect place for Veiga's talents to be nurtured – as Modric's so successfully were.

NZ batsman Phillips to join Tallawahs

The New Zealand batsman was the top-scorer in the domestic Super Smash T20 competition, and made his international debut in a T20I against South Africa earlier this year

ESPNcricinfo staff08-Aug-2017New Zealand batsman Glenn Phillips, who made his international debut in a T20I against South Africa earlier this year, is set to join Jamaica Tallawahs for CPL 2017.Auckland Cricket confirmed that 20-year-old Phillips will join Tallawahs as the franchise’s fifth overseas player, alongside Shakib Al Hasan, Kumar Sangakkara, Mohammad Sami and Imad Wasim.Phillips was the highest run-getter in New Zealand’s domestic T20 competition, the Super Smash, in the 2016-17 season with 369 runs in ten innings, at a strike rate of 143. He struck three fifties and a century in the tournament, becoming the first New Zealand player to hit centuries across first-class, List A and T20 formats in the same season. The performance earned him a call-up for the sole T20I on South Africa’s tour of New Zealand in February and he made his debut in Auckland.Tallawahs, the defending champions, have played two matches so far, with one win and a loss. Their assistance coach, Mark O’Donnell, who also coaches the Auckland Aces in New Zealand’s domestic set-up, said Phillips added value as a back-up wicketkeeper, too.”Glenn is valuable to any team he joins as he can turn a game on its head with his batting. He is also handy behind the stumps so to have him as a keeping option is also helpful for the Tallawahs.”

Yorkshire laid low by Roy's blast

Jason Roy’s assault on a below-par Yorkshire attack set the tone for a day of Surrey domination at Headingley
