North's star dims as Smith shines

Steven Smith’s breathless 77 presumably won’t save Australia in this match, but it has given a tantalising taste of what he can bring to Test cricket

Brydon Coverdale at Headingley23-Jul-2010Steven Smith’s breathless 77 presumably won’t save Australia in this match, but it has given a tantalising taste of what he can bring to Test cricket. There has never been any doubt that Smith has special about him, though how that intangible gift would translate to the elite level was unclear. It’s still not obvious what his future role will be.But on a day when several of Australia’s top six were defeated by a perky Pakistan bowling group, Smith’s confident counter-attack was especially notable. There was a particularly stark contrast with the No. 6 Marcus North, who has batted poorly in this series and appears less secure – and unlike Smith, less special – with every innings. It is unreasonable to suggest after one flashy half-century that Smith should take North’s spot up the order, for the younger man could frustrate as much as fascinate. But when Smith launched two consecutive sixes over long-off and onto the Football Stand roof off Danish Kaneria, the eyes of the Australian selectors must have lit up as much as those of the batsman.Australia’s next Test is in Mohali in October, by which time Nathan Hauritz will have recovered from his foot injury. There are only two Tests before the Ashes, so Andrew Hilditch and his panel have some important decisions to make. Hauritz, who was at the top of Australia’s wicket tally over their home summer, has done enough to remain the leading spinner. Two slow men could be employed on the Indian pitches but it’s equally possible that Smith will be dropped, despite singlehandedly keeping the match alive with his batting. As a legspinner he has been no more than tidy on his first Test tour, but his strokeplay confirmed that he is not the type to shrink under pressure.Smith, 21, is a youthful man who has thrived in the youngest format, and there was more than a hint of Twenty20 in some of his swats through midwicket and lofted drives through the off side. With every strong slap or cleverly nudged single at the end of an over to keep the strike from the tailenders, Smith sent Salman Butt to scratch his head for answers. In terms of technique, parts of Smith’s innings were questionable, but at least it was effective. The same cannot be said of North’s efforts over the past two Tests. This time, he came to the crease with four wickets down, a deficit of 12 and the team’s vice-captain Michael Clarke well set on 41. North was the last of the specialist batsmen and the situation called for vigilance.Mohammad Asif and Mohammad Aamer were finding late swing, and the momentum was with Pakistan. It was the perfect stage for North, whose ability to fight and score runs in difficult conditions was singled out by the selectors as a key reason for his promotion when he was first chosen in the Test squad early last year.He could easily have left alone a delivery from Aamer that was wide of off and did little in the air or off the pitch. Instead, North pushed for an ill-judged drive and inside-edged back onto his stumps. Aamer had bowled far more threatening balls, and it was the sort of dismissal in which poor technique plays a part.North’s high back-lift away from his body creates a worrying gap between bat and pad, and it can leave him off balance. In the first innings he wafted at a ball outside off stump from Umar Amin, a modest part-time medium pacer, and edged behind. At Lord’s, North took six wickets but scored 0 and 20.Since the start of the Australian summer, he has averaged 30.26 and his only century came in New Zealand against an attack so pedestrian that the debutant Brent Arnel was its most threatening member. North’s New Zealand tour saved his career, and he will need a similar last-minute rescue in India – if he’s given the opportunity.Failures in Mohali and Bangalore would leave the selectors little choice but to drop North for the first Ashes Test, and that is not the time to restructure. Perhaps they will trial Usman Khawaja in India, or shift Shane Watson down to No. 6 and reinstall Phillip Hughes at the top, or gamble on Brad Haddin at six and Smith at seven.Whatever they choose, Smith’s Headingley highlights package has made him hard to drop. The decision on North becomes easier with every failure.

Leeds submit enquiry for EFL starlet

Leeds United have enquired about signing Djed Spence, according to reports…

What’s the word?

“Teams in the Premier League and across Europe have been enquiring about the availability of Middlesbrough defender Djed Spence during this window,” revealed Sky Sports reporter Tom White (via Football Daily).

“It’s believed that Arsenal have made their interest known as they look to add competition for places at right-back. Leeds have also made an enquiry. The 21-year-old is actually a Middlesbrough player but is currently on loan at Nottingham Forest.”

The Mirror believe the young full-back is valued at around £10m after impressing against the Gunners during their shock FA Cup victory nearly two weeks ago.

Ayling backup

As an attack-minded wing-back, Spence would be a really intriguing signing for Leeds and one that could well benefit manager Marcelo Bielsa tenfold.

The Argentinian head coach only really has one senior option on the right-hand side of defence in vice-captain Luke Ayling, who has missed games through injury this campaign. The likes of Stuart Dallas and Jamie Shackleton have had to deputise out of position, as a result.

After falling down the pecking order under Neil Warnock at Boro, the 6-foot defender has been a standout star under Steve Cooper at the City Ground, where he currently ranks as their fifth-best performer in the Championship.

[snack-amp-story url = “https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-leeds-transfer-rumours-and-news-2″ title=”Read the latest Leeds news, transfer updates and much, much more!”]

As per WhoScored, Spence has averaged 1.6 tackles and interceptions per game, showing his defensive stability, but also a squad-high 1.8 dribbles and 0.8 key passes per game, which goes to show his influence in the final third, too.

Despite things turning south under the veteran boss, Warnock was once full of praise for the young starlet, comparing him to two of England’s top right-backs.

“You look at one or two or the others now, Trent Alexander-Arnold at Liverpool and Wan-Bissaka at Man United, they are all that type,” he said. “He has got enormous ability and when you have that ability it’s criminal if you don’t get to the very top.”

His performance against Arsenal earlier in the month was described as an “incredible display” by football.london writer Connor Humm, so it suggests that he is more than capable of competing with the big boys, should a move ensue this year.

With a lack of solid options behind his star man, Bielsa could really do with Spence and at just £10m for a homegrown talent, it would be an absolute steal.

Newcastle eye "underrated" Douglas Luiz

An update has emerged regarding Newcastle United and their interest in Premier League metronome Douglas Luiz…

What’s the talk?

According to The Athletic, the Villa midfielder has featured in discussions for the Magpies as they eye up deals ahead of the deadline on Monday.

The report claims that Yves Bissouma, of Brighton is too expensive for the Toon, whilst a move to bring Bruno Guimaraes to St James’ Park from Lyon is progressing nicely.

Better than Willock

Newcastle must ensure that they are able to get a deal over the line for Luiz in the coming days, as he could be a major upgrade on Joe Willock in midfield.

The current Magpies midfielder has averaged an unimpressive SofaScore rating of 6.63 in the Premier League this season, losing 53% of his duels over the course of the campaign since his permanent summer move from Arsenal. He has been unable to deliver consistently good displays in the top flight, and that is something Luiz could bring to the table.

For Villa this term, the former Manchester City man has averaged a SofaScore rating of 6.96. He has won 53% of his duels and provided 1.4 key passes per game, along with registering three assists. Luiz is also an asset defensively as he has averaged 3.1 tackles and interceptions per game.

Pep Guardiola previously heaped praise on the Brazilian, saying: “He’s a guy who plays all of the minutes. He’s an important player for Aston Villa. A guy who’s clever with the ball, so physically strong. He’s a lovely, lovely guy. Today, when he was involved in the game, defensively, offensively, he was good.”

Jermaine Jenas once dubbed him “underrated”, and his aforementioned statistics in the Premier League suggest that the 23-year-old is deserving of applause.

The £52k-per-week gem has shown that he can be a reliable option in the top flight by producing excellent performances week in, week out, which Willock has been unable to do this season. Therefore, the Villa ace seems a much better player than the former Arsenal man at the moment and could be a terrific addition to Eddie Howe’s squad.

This is why the Magpies must work hard to secure a deal to bring him to Tyneside, along with Guimaraes, before the window slams shut on Monday. Luiz is a proven Premier League player, and his statistics suggest that he will be a major upgrade on Willock in the middle of the park.

Essex fail to build on Masters haul

Ravi Bopara missed a golden opportunity to press his claims for a place on theAshes tour this winter when he failed to perform in front of national selectorGeoff Miller at Colchester

It signalled the continuation of a disappointing sequence for Bopara. Since scoring a century in each innings of the match against Yorkshire, he has scored just 41 runs in his last five trips to the middle in the County Championship. On an absorbing opening day Essex reached the close on 126 for 6, to leavethe contest intriguingly poised going into the second day. While Bopara’s struggles continue, Miller must have been impressed with the efforts of James Hildreth who maintained his season’s fine form.He came into this match with an average well over 50 and made 84 to keepSomerset afloat after Marcus Trescothick had been caught at slip from the thirdball of the match, without a run on the board, to provide David Masters with oneof his five wickets.Coming in with the total on 32 for 3, Hildreth batted with fluency togather a dozen boundaries before he chipped Masters to short mid-wicket. Next highest score was Zander de Bruyn with 34, but not before he was called back to resume his innings. When he had made 16 he was given out lbw by umpire Peter Willey, but followinga consultation between Willey and his colleague John Steele he returned tocontinue with his innings which was eventually ended by Danish Kaneria, thanksto a fine diving catch by Mark Pettini at first slip.Masters went on to finish with 5 for 43 from 21.1 overs, his best figures ofthe summer. Tony Palladino and Chris Wright weighed in with two wickets each. Somerset, who are nursing realistic hopes of being county champions, will have been disappointed with their efforts with the bat against opponents looking favourites to drop into the second division. However they fought back strongly. Either side of Bopara’s departure BenPhillips struck to remove Jaik Mickleburgh and Matt Walker before pacemanAlfonso Thomas raced in to make further inroads into the innings.First he trapped Billy Godleman lbw for 32 before cutting short the promisinginnings of Pettini who had reached 34 when he was caught behind. Then in the final over of the day Willoughby had Foster caught in the gulley for 16 to end a partnership of 47 with Ryan ten Doeschate, who will resume on 36.In all, 16 wickets fell on the day for 341 but pitches liaison officer JackBirkenshaw announced himself “reasonably satisfied” with the pitch. However, Birkenshaw revealed he will again be in attendance tomorrow to see if there is any marked deterioration.

Newcastle United: Sky Sports drop Lingard update

Newcastle United are now contemplating making another move for Manchester United midfielder Jesse Lingard amid an update involving their pursuit of Hugo Ekitike.

What’s the story?

After initially seeming like the Magpies would seal the signing of the Stade Reims striker, it appears things have just hit a roadblock, and now, Sky Sports journalist Keith Downie has revealed that Eddie Howe’s side could turn to Lingard if things completely break down over a move for the latter.

Speaking live on Sky Sports (footage relayed by NUFC360), Downie said: “That would then mean Newcastle will have to look elsewhere, and as we know they’ve been interested in Jesse Lingard all window long.

“It’s our understanding that the player is keen to move here, and Newcastle would love to bring him to the football club, but the financials are the big problem there. I think both Newcastle and Manchester United would have to come to some sort of compromise. I think Newcastle would look to Lingard if they get a definite no from Ekitike, and I have to say that one is on ice.”

Howe would love him

After joining West Ham on loan just last year in the January transfer window, the England international bagged an impressive nine goals and four assists in just his first ten Premier League games for the club – it was no surprise then that he was lauded as being “absolutely phenomenal” and that on the form that he was showing, he was the best player in the top-flight.

His performances at the London Stadium proved the impact the £75k-a-week earning star can make on a team when given a consistent run of game-time – something he would surely see a lot more of at Newcastle.

Given the kind of midfield struggles that Howe’s side have had this season – their top goal-scoring midfielder this campaign has been Jonjo Shelvey with just two – bringing in Lingard would be a major step in the right direction of taking some of the burden away from the likes of Callum Wilson and Allan Saint-Maximin going forward.

The £18m-rated star would surely fancy his chances of reviving his career at St James’ Park, and Howe would certainly love the added goal-scoring he would bring from midfield.

Meanwhile, Newcastle United are in talks over this European star…

Leicestershire dominate third day

James Taylor struck his third County Championship century of the season as Leicestershire’s batsmen dominated on the third day against Northamptonshire at Wantage Road

15-Sep-2010
ScorecardJames Taylor struck his third County Championship century of the season as Leicestershire’s batsmen dominated on the third day against Northamptonshire at Wantage Road. The 20-year-old passed the 1,000-run mark in this season’s Championship en route to a magnificent 156 off 316 balls as the visitors declared on 448 for 9. The hosts, who made 250 in their first innings, had reached 10 for 1 in their second when bad light ended play.Former England wicketkeeper Paul Nixon contributed 65 with Northamptonshire debutant David Burton claiming 5 for 75 – his last four dismissals came in the space of 14 balls. Leicestershire started the day on 159 for 2 – 91 runs behind Northamptonshire’s first innings total – with Greg Smith resuming on 102 and Taylor on 32.Smith was to add just two more to his overnight total before he left a straight delivery from former Middlesex seamer Burton and looked back to see his leg stump being toppled. But Taylor hung around to complete a patient half-century off 118 balls including one six launched over midwicket.Veteran Nixon also made a fluent fifty off 75 balls before Taylor made it to his century – his sixth in first-class cricket – off 210 balls after lunch. Jack Brooks finally broke up the partnership after they had added 132 between them, when he forced Nixon to edge his delivery to wicketkeeper David Murphy.Leicestershire keeper Tom New and Taylor added 68 runs for the fifth wicket together before the tea interval with the visitors on 365 for 4. New, who made 43, only lasted until the second over after the restart before he slashed James Middlebrook to David Lucas at backward point.Taylor reached his milestone in the following over before going on to 150 off 308 balls, but he finally holed out in the 129th over. He launched Burton high into the air and David Sales ran to short third man to take the catch. Jigar Naik (27) edged the next ball to Sales at second slip and Burton then claimed his five-for when he forced Nathan Buck (two) to play onto his stumpsand bowled Leicestershire captain Matthew Hoggard with the next ball for nought. The visitors declared during a brief delay for bad light, giving them a lead of 198. Northamptonshire lost stand-in captain Stephen Peters (four) when he was trapped lbw by Buck in the second over, before bad light brought play to a close with five overs left. Mal Loye and Alex Wakely were unbeaten on four and two respectively at stumps.

Clean up your act, ICC tells PCB

The ICC has given the PCB a hard rap on the knuckles and decided to monitor closely the running of the game in Pakistan

Osman Samiuddin13-Oct-2010Taking note of the continuing decline in the governance of cricket in Pakistan, the ICC has given the PCB a hard rap on the knuckles and decided to monitor closely the running of the game in Pakistan. After a two-day board meeting at the ICC’s HQ in Dubai – the first since the spot-fixing scandal that rocked the world of cricket – the message of the world governing body to one of its leading members was clear: sort out the game’s administration or face the consequences, potentially in the form of sanctions.A wide-ranging series of measures has been approved by the ICC requiring Pakistan to not only toughen its approach to corruption within the game but to also work alongside the ICC’s task force on Pakistan “to carry out any reforms which may be deemed necessary to restore confidence in the administration of the game” in that country. In this statement lies an implicit recognition and acknowledgment of the administrative mishaps in Ijaz Butt’s two-year tenure, as well as the breakdown in relationship between the board and ICC. Under Butt’s administration, the ICC has seen a full member attacked by terrorists in Pakistan, an incident that took international cricket away from the country. That almost led to a legal battle between the PCB and ICC and, though it was averted, the PCB didn’t even file a report on the incident to the ICC until well over a year later. The ICC’s task force, initially set up to examine ways to bring international cricket back to Pakistan and cushion against subsequent financial losses, has been “reconstituted” for this purpose; in effect, it’s brief has been widened to go beyond and look at ways to work with the PCB in improving governance. Giles Clarke, the ECB chairman who heads the task force, is believed to have played a crucial role in the meetings to broaden the force’s role. Peter Chingoka, the ZC chairman who has also extended a helping hand to the PCB by offering his national side as the first tourists to Pakistan since the terror attacks, has been appointed to the team, which also includes Ranjan Madugalle, Ramiz Raja, Mike Brearley and Dave Richardson, the ICC’s general manager. The spot-fixing scandal that erupted during the tour to England this summer has also brought its own specific repercussions. The Pakistan board refused to initially suspend the three players at the centre of the scandal, eventually compelling the ICC to do so. That sparked another war of words between Butt and the ICC, the former claiming the latter had acted with undue haste as the police investigation was ongoing. Matters took a bizzare twist when Butt claimed there was “loud and clear talk” of England’s players taking money to lose an ODI this summer. He was forced to retract the statement after the ECB threatened legal action and the whole affair prompted some within the ICC to consider the possibility of suspending Butt from his ICC directorship. It is against this backdrop that the ICC has told the PCB that “it must act and be seen to be acting to uphold the zero-tolerance attitude to corruption in sport.” Pakistan now has 30 days to conduct a thorough and far-reaching review of their “player integrity issues” and report back to the task force. In the review, the PCB must show that it has introduced a domestic anti-corruption code, in line with the ICC’s own code. Not all member countries currently have a domestic code but the ACSU has only requested all members to implement a domestic code that mirrors the ICC’s, a sign of how seriously it is considering the problem in Pakistan. The PCB has also been asked in that time to implement an education programmes for players, a “proper, accountable and robust disciplinary process for the sport” and a process to deter and detect corrupt elements within the game, “whether it be players, officials, agents or any other individual.”In effect, the PCB has been asked to take measures which should’ve been taken ten years ago after the Qayyum commission report, a decade in which the clouds of corruption have hovered consistently over Pakistan cricket. Failure to do so could lead to sanctions according to the ICC, though the nature of these have not been specified. The worst case scenario – and an extremely unlikely one – is that Pakistan is suspended as a full member, though it is thought a likelier option might be to find ways to deal with officials other than Butt. With Butt’s recent statements in mind, the board has also been told not to take any action “which might put themselves in a conflict of interest position as regards the allegations” that are currently under investigation, or to make “public comments and disclosing confidential information which undermine the integrity, reputation and image of the game and/or any ongoing disciplinary or criminal investigation/proceedings.”All of which is likely to place further pressure on Butt, who has already been facing severe criticism domestically from across the spectrum. Rumours were rife last week that he was about to be replaced, though that has come to nought.

Mathew Mallon leaves Everton for Blackburn

Adam Jones has shared the news that youngster Mathew Mallon has now left Everton and is set to sign for Blackburn Rovers.

The Lowdown: Following Unsworth

It has been reported that Toffees under-23 manager and Academy Director David Unsworth is also leaving Goodison Park to pursue the chance of becoming a first-team coach.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/everton-news-4/” title=”Everton news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

One of his players in Mallon is set to follow him out the exit door, in what could be the start of a mass exodus at youth level on Merseyside.

The Latest: Mallon leaves Everton

Taking to Twitter, Liverpool Echo journalist Jones has shared the news that the ‘exciting’ Mallon has now ‘quietly left’ the Toffees and will make a move to a Championship club in the summer.

Jones expanded on the news line in a corresponding article, stating that the 18-year-old is set to sign for Blackburn in July after captaining Everton’s under-18s on a number of occasions this season.

The Verdict: Shame

It is certainly a shame that the Blues have lost yet another promising academy prospect, after Thierry Small joined Southampton back in August.

Describing his pace, strength, defending and crossing as his ‘main assets’, Mallon featured heavily for both the under-18s and under-23s at Everton, playing 35 times in total over the last two campaigns, scoring two goals and providing a further two assists (Transfermarkt).

Nonetheless, the Toffees will now be hoping to have no regrets as they watch the right-back’s development from a distance.

Kenya’s batting star was 29-year-old Collins Obuya, who made a gritty 65 to guide them past 200, a total which proved to be just enough.Obuya was involved in two steadying stands after Kenya’s openers fell early to quick bowler Shoaib Sarwar. First, there was a 63-run partnership with veteran Steve Tikolo for the third wicket, after which he added 73 for the fourth with Mumbai-born 23-year-old Tanmay Mishra.Kenya suffered a collapse after that, losing five wickets for nine runs to stumble to 175 for 8, 39-year-old left-arm spinner Mohammad Tauqir doing most of the damage. Burnley chiefs eye ‘excellent’ new manager

Burnley chiefs have allegedly set their sights on a trophy-winning boss as news from a Football Insider source emerges on the club’s manager hunt.

The Lowdown: Dyche era ends…

After nearly ten years with the Lancashire side, club legend and long-serving boss Sean Dyche was unceremoniously sacked by Burnley – much to the bemusement of outsiders.

Dyche previously lead the Clarets to a plethora of successive seasons in England’s top flight, avoiding the Championship drop on an arguable shoe-string budget when compared to some of the Premier League’s elite.

The 50-year-old departs Burnley amid their fierce battle with fellow relegation-strugglers Everton as they tussle with the Toffees and aim to maintain their first tier status.

Frank Lampard’s men currently stand a point above in 17th with one game in hand as Burnley hierarchy also work on appointing Dyche’s heir behind-the-scenes.

The Latest: ‘Burnley source’ shares Carvalhal news…

According to a ‘Burnley source’, speaking to Football Insider, former Swansea City boss and current SC Braga coach Carlos Carvalhal is a contender to become their new manager.

The 56-year-old is apparently being eyed ‘within the corridors of power’ at Turf Moor as club chiefs begin to hold a real interest in his possible appointment.

The Verdict: Ideal candidate?

While it is difficult to truly replace Dyche given his iconic status and marvellous job with the club before leaving, we believe Burnley officials could do far worse than Carvalhal.

As shared by journalist Miguel Delaney of The Independent, his ‘stunning’ tactics have taken Portugal by storm in recent seasons.

Carvalhal has received glowing endorsements from big name boss Jose Mourinho in past years, who called his compatriot ‘the manager of the season’ back in 2018.

He has also won trophies – clinching the Taça de Portugal trophy with Braga last season.

The Europa League quarter-finalist has also been called an ‘excellent manager’ by journalist Alex Goncalves, who is the founder of Portuguese football news website TugaScout.

Carvalhal, going by all of these facts, certainly stands out as a credible candidate.
